The macroscopic signature for Weyl nodes so far has been the negative longitudinal magnetoresistance arising from the chiral anomaly. However, negative longitudinal magnetoresistance is not unique to chiral anomaly and can arise due to completely different mechanisms such as current jetting or in ferromagnetic systems due to the suppression of scattering with magnons. Therefore, a macroscopic effect that can be uniquely attributed to the presence of Weyl nodes is desirable. Here we show that the planar Hall effect could be a hallmark for Weyl nodes. We investigated the anisotropic magnetoresistance and planar Hall effect in Fe$_3$Sn$_2$, which has a kagome lattice and has been predicted to be a type II Weyl metal. We discover that the planar Hall effect contains a field antisymmetric contribution in addition to the ordinary field symmetric contribution. The field antisymmetric planar Hall effect has a 3-fold rotational symmetry, distinctively different from the symmetric planar Hall effect, but consistent with the 3-fold rotational degeneracy of the magnetization in Fe$_3$Sn$_2$. The temperature and field dependence of the antisymmetric planar Hall effect rules out an interpretation based on contribution from the anomalous Hall effect and is different from the symmetric planar Hall effect, pointing to a different origin. We attribute the antisymmetric planar Hall effect to the topological nature of Fe$_3$Sn$_2$ due to the presence of Weyl II nodes. Our finding offers a promising route for macroscopically probing Weyl systems.
Owing to its charge-free property, magnon is highly promising to achieve dissipationless transport without Joule heating and thus potentially applicable to energy-efficient devices. Moreover, a kagome lattice, as stacking layers of many magnon ferromagnets, also exhibits valley structure in quasiparticle spectra, which are likely to add a new dimension to magnon excitation. Here, we investigate valley magnon and associated valley modulation in a kagome lattice, with staggered exchange interaction and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The staggered exchange interaction breaks spatial inversion…
The magnetotransport properties of disordered ferromagnetic kagome layers are investigated numerically. We show that a large domain-wall magnetoresistance or negative magnetoresistance can be realized in kagome layered materials (e.g. Fe$_3$Sn$_2$, Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, and Mn$_3$Sn), which show the quantum anomalous Hall effect. The kagome layers show a strong magnetic anisotropy and a large magnetoresistance depending on their magnetic texture. These domain-wall magnetoresistances are expected to be robust against disorder and observed irrespective of the domain-wall thickness, in contrast to c…
Electronic properties of kagome lattice have drawn great attention recently. In associate with flat-band induced by destructive interference and Dirac cone-type dispersion, abundant exotic phenomena have been theoretically discussed. The material realization of electronic kagome lattice is a crucial step towards comprehending kagome physics and achieving novel quantum phases. Here, combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, transport measurements and first-principle calculations, we expose a planar flat-band in paramagnetic YCr6Ge6 as a typical signature of electronic kagome lattice.…
Spin and charge are two interrelated properties of electrons. However, most of previous works on topological matter study the electronic and magnonic excitations separately. In this paper, by combining density functional theory calculations with the Schwinger boson method, we determine the topological electronic band structures and topological magnon spectrum simultaneously in the ferromagnetic ground state of the narrow-band-gap CoCu3(OH)6Cl2, which is an ABC stacking Kagome lattice material with fractional occupancy on Cu sites. This material provides an ideal platform to study the interplay…
A ferromagnet with spin anisotropies on the 2D Kagome lattice is theoretically studied. This is a typical example of the flat-band ferromagnet. The Berry phase induced by the tilting of the spins opens the band gap and quantized Hall conductance σ_{xy}=\pm e^2/h is realized without external magnetic field. This is the most realistic chiral spin state based on the ferromagnetism. We also discuss the implication of our results to anomalous Hall effect observed in the metallic pyrochlore ferromagnets R_2Mo_2O_7(R=Nd, Sm, Gd).
The experimental observation of topological magnon bands and thermal Hall effect in a kagomé lattice ferromagnet Cu(1-3, bdc) has inspired the search for topological magnon effects in various insulating ferromagnets that lack an inversion center allowing a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) spin-orbit interaction. The star lattice (also known as the decorated honeycomb lattice) ferromagnets is an ideal candidate for this purpose because it is a variant of the kagomé lattice with additional links that connect the up-pointing and down-pointing triangles. This gives rise to twice the unit cell of the kag…
We theoretically study domain wall motion induced by an electric field in the quantum anomalous Hall states on a two-dimensional Kagome lattice with ferromagnetic order and spin-orbit coupling. We show that an electric charge is accumulated near the domain wall which indicates that the electric field drives both the accumulated charge and the domain wall with small energy dissipation. Using the linear response theory we compute the non-equilibrium spin density which exerts a non-adiabatic spin transfer torque on textures of the local magnetization. This torque emerges even when the bulk is ins…
The chiral edge states and the quantized Hall conductance (QHC) in the two-dimensional kagomé lattice with spin anisotropies included in a general Hund's coupling region are studied. This kagomé lattice system is periodic in the $x$ direction but has two edges in the $y$ direction. Numerical results show that the strength of the Hund's coupling, as well as the spin chirality, affects the edge states and the corresponding QHC. Within the topological edge theory, we give the expression of the QHC with the winding number of the chiral edge states on the Riemman surface. This expression is also co…
The orbital magnetization and its effects on the two-dimensional kagomé lattice with spin anisotropies included in the general Hund's coupling region have been theoretically studied. The results show that the strength of the Hund's coupling, as well as the spin chirality, contributes to the orbital magnetization $\mathcal{M}$. Upon varying both these parameters, it is found that the two parts of $\mathcal{M}$, i.e., the conventional part $\mathbf{M}_{c}$ and the Berry-phase correction part $\mathbf{M}_Ω$, oppose each other. The anomalous Nernst conductivity is also calculated and a peak-valley…
In a kagome lattice, the time reversal symmetry can be broken by a staggered magnetic flux emerging from ferromagnetic ordering and intrinsic spin-orbit coupling, leading to several wellseparated nontrivial Chern bands and intrinsic quantum anomalous Hall effect. Based on this idea and ab initio calculations, we propose the realization of the intrinsic quantum anomalous Hall effect in the single layer Cs2Mn3F12 kagome lattice and on the (001) surface of a Cs2LiMn3F12 single crystal by modifying the carrier coverage on it, where the band gap is around 20 meV. Moreover, a simplified tight bindin…
Magnetic field effects on single-particle energy bands (Hofstadter butterfly), Hall conductance, flat-band ferromagnetism, and magnetoresistance of two-dimensional Kagome lattices are studied. The flat-band ferromagnetism is shown to be broken as the flat-band has finite dispersion in the magnetic field. A metal-insulator transition induced by the magnetic field (giant negative magnetoresistance) is predicted. In the half-filled flat band, the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition and the metal-insulator one occur simultaneously at a magnetic field for strongly interacting electrons. All of th…
We investigate the chiral edge states in the two-dimensional ferromagntic kagomé lattice with spin anisotropies included. The system is periodic in the $x$ direction but has two edges in the $y$ direction. The Harper equation for solving the energies of edge states is derived. We find that there are two edge states in each bulk energy gap, corresponding to two zero points of the Bloch function on the complex-energy Riemann surface (RS). The edge-state energy loops parametrized by the momentum $k_{x}$ cross the holes of the RS. When the Fermi energy lies in the bulk energy gap, the quantized Ha…
We construct a two-orbital effective model for a ferromagnetic Kagome-lattice shandite, $\rm{{Co}_3{Sn}_2{S}_2}$, a candidate material of magnetic Weyl semimetals, by considering one $d$ orbital from Co, and one $p$ orbital from interlayer Sn. The energy spectrum near the Fermi level, and the configurations of the Weyl points, computed by using our model, are similar to those obtained by first principle calculations. We show also that nodal rings appear even with spin-orbit coupling when the magnetization points in-plane direction. Additionally, magnetic properties of $\rm{{Co}_3{Sn}_2{S}_2}$ …
Recently, Berry phase in the semiclassical dynamical of Bloch electrons has been found to make a correction to the phase-space density of states and a general multi-band formula for finite-temperature orbital magnetization has been given [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{97}, 026603 (2006)], where the orbital magnetization $\mathcal{M}$ consists of two parts, i.e., the conventional part $M_{c}$ and the Berry-phase correction part $M_Ω$. Using this general formula, we theoretically investigate the orbital magnetization and its effects on thermoelectric transport and magnetic susceptibility properties o…
The recently discovered material Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ shows an impressive behavior of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) conductivity driven by the interplay between ferromagnetism in the $z$ direction and antiferromagnetism in the $xy$ plane. Motivated by these facts, first we build and study a spin-1/2 model to describe the magnetism of Co-atoms on the Kagome planes. Then, we include conduction electrons which are coupled to the spins-1/2 through a strong Hund's coupling. The spin-orbit coupling results in topological low-energy bands. For 2/3 on-site occupancy, we find a topological transition f…
The manipulation of topologically protected field configurations, already predicted and experimentally observed in non-centrosymmetric magnets, as skyrmions, merons and antimerons could definitely have potential applications in logic gate operations as carriers of information. Here, we present and elaborate a proof of concept on how to construct a three-input non-canonical majority gate on a kagome ferromagnet lacking inversion symmetry. By taking advantage of the existence of edge modes in a Kagome magnet, it is possible to create topological excitations as merons and antimerons at the edge o…
First order phase transitions, where one phase replaces another by virtue of a simple crossing of free energies, are best known between solids, liquids and vapours, but they also occur in a wide range of other contexts, including even elemental magnets. The key challenges are to establish whether a phase transition is indeed first order, and then to determine how the new phase emerges because this will determine thermodynamic and electronic properties. Here we meet both challenges for the spin reorientation transition in the topological metallic ferromagnet Fe3Sn2. Our magnetometry and variabl…
