Coriolis effect is an important error source in the weak equivalence principle (WEP) test using atom interferometer. In this paper, the problem of Coriolis error in WEP test is studied theoretically and experimentally. In theoretical simulation, Coriolis effect is analyzed by establishing an error model. The measurement errors of Eotvos coefficient (eta) in WEP test related to experimental parameters, such as horizontal-velocity difference and horizontal-position difference of atomic clouds, horizontal-position difference of detectors and rotation compensation of Raman laser's mirror are calculated. In experimental investigation, the position difference between Rb-85 and Rb-87 atomic clouds is reduced to 0.1 mm by optimizing the experimental parameters, an alternating detection method is used to suppress the error caused by detection position difference, thus the Coriolis error related to atomic clouds and detectors is eliminated to 1.1E-9. This Coriolis error is further corrected by compensating the rotation of Raman laser's mirror, and the total uncertainty of eta measurement related to Coriolis effect is reduced as 4.4E-11.
Correlating the signals from simultaneous atom interferometers has enabled some of the most precise determinations of fundamental constants. Here, we show that multiple interferometers with strategically chosen initial conditions ("offset simultaneous conjugate interferometers" or OSCIs) can provide multi-channel readouts that amplify or suppress specific effects. This allows us to measure the photon recoil, and thus the fine structure constant, while being insensitive to gravity gradients, general acceleration gradients, and unwanted diffraction phases - these effects can be simultaneously mo…

We present a compact high-resolution gravity gradiometer based on dual Rb-85 atom interferometers using stimulated Raman transitions. A baseline L=44.5 cm and an interrogation time T=130 ms are realized in a sensor head with volume of less than 100 liters. Experimental parameters are optimized to improve the short-term sensitivity while a rejection algorithm relying on inversion of the Raman wave vector is implemented to improve the long-term stability. After an averaging time of 17000 s, a phase resolution of 104 μrad is achieved, which corresponds to a gravity gradient resolution of 0.86 E. …
Long ground-Rydberg coherence lifetime is interesting for implementing high-fidelity quantum logic gates, many-body physics, and other quantum information protocols. However, the potential well formed by a conventional far-off-resonance red-detuned optical-dipole trap that is attractive for ground-state cold atoms is usually repulsive for Rydberg atoms, which will result in the rapid loss of atoms and low repetition rate of the experimental sequence. Moreover, the coherence time will be sharply shortened due to the residual thermal motion of cold atoms. These issues can be addressed by a one-d…
Bragg diffraction has been used in atom interferometers because it allows signal enhancement through multiphoton momentum transfer and suppression of systematics by not changing the internal state of atoms. Its multi-port nature, however, can lead to parasitic interferometers, allows for intensity-dependent phase shifts in the primary interferometers, and distorts the ellipses used for phase extraction. We study and suppress these unwanted effects. Specifically, phase extraction by ellipse fitting and the resulting systematic phase shifts are calculated by Monte Carlo simulations. Phase shifts…

The periodicity inherent to any interferometric signal entails a fundamental trade-off between sensitivity and dynamic range of interferometry-based sensors. Here we develop a methodology for significantly extending the dynamic range of such sensors without compromising their sensitivity, scale-factor, and bandwidth. The scheme is based on operating two simultaneous, nearly-overlapping interferometers, with full-quadrature phase detection and with different but close scale factors. The two interferometers provide a joint period much larger than 2π in a moiré-like effect, while benefiting from …
We demonstrate the scale up of a symmetric three-path contrast interferometer to large momentum separation. The observed phase stability at separation of 112 photon recoil momenta ($112\hbar k$) exceeds the performance of earlier free-space interferometers. In addition to the symmetric interferometer geometry and Bose-Einstein condensate source, the robust scalability of our approach relies crucially on the suppression of undesired diffraction phases through a careful choice of atom optics parameters. The interferometer phase evolution is quadratic with number of recoils, reaching a rate as hi…
A major challenge in high-precision light-pulse atom interferometric experiments such as in tests of the weak equivalence principle is the uncontrollable dependency of the phase on initial velocity and position of the atoms in the presence of inhomogeneous gravitational fields. To overcome this limitation, mitigation strategies have been proposed, however, valid only for harmonic potentials or only for small branch separations in more general situations. Here we provide a mitigation formula for anharmonic perturbation potentials including local gravitational effects that vary on length scales …
Point source atom interferometry is a promising approach for implementing robust, high-sensitivity, rotation sensors using cold atoms. However, its scale factor, i.e., the ratio between the interferometer signal and the actual rotation rate, depends on the initial conditions of the atomic cloud, which may drift in time and result in bias instability, particularly in compact devices with short interrogation times. We present two methods to stabilize the scale factor, one relying on a model-based correction which exploits correlations between multiple features of the interferometer output and wo…

We present possible design concepts for a tractor atom interferometer (TAI) based on three-dimensional confinement and transport of ultracold atoms. The confinement reduces device size and wave-packet dispersion, enables arbitrary holding times, and facilitates control to create complex trajectories that allow for optimization to cancel unwanted sensitivity, fast splitting and recombination, and suppression of detrimental nonadiabatic excitation. Thus, the design allows for further advancement of compact, high-sensitivity, quantum sensing technology. In particular, we focus on the implementati…
