We present a search for high-energy $γ$-ray emission from 566 Active Galactic Nuclei at redshift $z > 0.2$, from the 2WHSP catalog of high-synchrotron peaked BL Lac objects with eight years of Fermi-LAT data. We focus on a redshift range where electromagnetic cascade emission induced by ultra-high-energy cosmic rays can be distinguished from leptonic emission based on the spectral properties of the sources. Our analysis leads to the detection of 160 sources above $\approx$ $5σ$ (TS $\geq 25$) in the 1 - 300 GeV energy range. By discriminating significant sources based on their $γ$-ray fluxes, variability properties, and photon index in the Fermi-LAT energy range, and modeling the expected hadronic signal in the TeV regime, we select a list of promising sources as potential candidate ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray emitters for follow-up observations by Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes.
Very recently a fast radio burst (FRB) 200428 associated with a strong X-ray burst from the Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 has been detected, which is direct evidence supporting the magnetar progenitor models of FRBs. Assuming the FRB radiation mechanism is synchrotron maser emission from magnetized shocks, we develop a specific scenario by introducing a density jump structure of upstream medium, and thus the double-peaked character of FRB 200428 is a natural outcome. The luminosity and emission frequency of two pulses can be well explained in this scenario. Furthermore, we find that the sync…
For the first time, Kataoka \& Stawarz reported a clear detection of a hard X-ray excess, above $\gtrsim$20 keV, in the high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac object Mrk 421. We find that this feature may not be produced by the low-energy part of the same electron population that produced the Fermi/LAT $γ$-ray. Because of that it is required that the power-law electron energy go down to $γ_{\rm min}\approx19$, which predicts a very strong radio emission (radio flux larger than the observed) even considering the synchrotron self-absorption effect. We investigate the possibility of this excess being pro…

High synchrotron peaked blazars (HSPs or HBLs) play a central role in very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy, and likely in neutrino astronomy. Currently, the largest compilation of HSP blazars, the 2WHSP sample, includes 1691 sources, but it is not complete neither in the radio nor in the X-ray band. In order to provide a more sizable and more accurate set of HSP blazars that is useful for future statistical studies and to plan for VHE/TeV observations, we present the largest sample of extreme and high synchrotron peaked (EHSP;HSP) blazars and blazar candidates: the 3HSP catalogue. The 3H…
We have made an estimation of the synchrotron peak frequency ($ν_{peak}^{s}$) for six very low synchrotron peaked (VLSP) blazars. These objects were selected as VLSP candidates (with the $ν_{peak}^{s} \leq 10^{13}$ Hz) from the archival data. We have build spectral energy distribution using quasi-simultaneous observations at the Zeiss-1000 and RATAN-600 telescopes of the Special astrophysical observatory of RAS and made an estimation of the $ν_{peak}^{s}$. We confirmed classification as a VLSP for two sources ([HB89] 1308+326 and 3C 345), for four other blazars we have calculated $ν_{peak}^{s}…
This paper presents a detailed analysis of the temporal and spectral variability of the low-energy peaked BL Lac object S5 0716+714 with a long (~74 ks)X-ray observation performed by XMM-Newton on 2007 September 24-25. The source experiences recurrent flares on timescales of hours. The soft X-ray variations, up to a factor of ~4, are much stronger than the hard X-ray variations. With higher energy, the variability amplitude increases in the soft X-rays but decreases in the hard X-rays. The hard X-ray variability amplitude, however, is effectively large. For the first time, we detect a soft lag…
PKS 1424+240 is a distant very high energy gamma-ray BL Lac object with redshift $z=0.601$. It was found that pure synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) process normally need extreme input parameters (e.g., very low magnetic field intensity and extraordinarily large Doppler factor) to explain its multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs). To avoid the extreme model parameters, different models have been proposed (e.g., two-zone SSC model or lepto-hadronic model). In this work, we employ the traditional one-zone leptonic model after including a weak external Compton component to re-explore…
The next generation of TeV detectors is expected to have a significantly enhanced performance. It is therefore constructive to search for new TeV candidates for observation. This paper focuses on TeV candidates among the high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lacertae objects (HBLs) reported in the fourth catalog of active galactic nuclei detected by the Fermi's Large Area Telescope, i.e., 4LAC. By cross-matching the Fermi data with radio and optical observations, we collected the multiwavelength features of 180 HBLs with known redshift. The data set contains 39 confirmed TeV sources and 141 objects whose…
We propose a physical model for the peaked noise in the X-ray power density spectra of accreting X-ray binaries. We interpret its appearance as an interference of two Comptonization continua: one coming from the up-scattering of seed photons from the cold thin disk and the other fed by the synchrotron emission of the hot flow. Variations of both X-ray components are caused by fluctuations in mass accretion rate, but there is a delay between them corresponding to the propagation timescale from the disk Comptonization radius to the region of synchrotron Comptonization. If the disk and synchrotro…
Most of the extragalactic sources detected at TeV energies are BL Lac objects. They belong to the subclass of "high frequency peaked BL Lacs" (HBLs) exhibiting spectral energy distributions with a lower energy peak in the X-ray band; this is widely interpreted as synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons. The X-ray spectra are generally curved, and well described in terms of a log-parabolic shape. In a previous investigation of TeV HBLs (TBLs) we found two correlations between their spectral parameters. (1) The synchrotron peak luminosity L_p increases with its peak energy E_p; (2) the …
Studying unidentified γ-ray sources is important as they may hide new discoveries. We conducted a multiwavelength analysis of 13 unidentified Fermi-LAT sources in the 3FGL catalog that have no known counterparts (Unidentified Gamma-ray Sources, UnIDs). The sample was selected for sources that have a single radio and X-ray candidate counterpart in their uncertainty ellipses. The purpose of this study is to find a possible blazar signature and to model the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of the selected sources using an empirical log parabolic model. The results show that the synchrotron emis…
We present the 1-100 GeV spectral energy distribution for a population of 148 high-synchrotron-peaked blazars (HSPs) recently detected with Fermi-LAT as part of the First Brazil-ICRANet Gamma-ray Blazar catalogue (1BIGB). Most of the 1BIGB sources do not appear in previous Fermi-LAT catalogues and their gamma-ray spectral properties are presented here for the first time, representing a significant new extension of the gamma-ray blazar population. Since our sample was originally selected from an excess signal in the 0.3-500 GeV band, the sources stand out as promising TeV blazar candidates, pot…

BL Lac objects are known to have very energetic jets pointing towards the observer under small viewing angles. Many of these show high luminosity over the whole energy range up to TeV, mostly classified as high-energy peaked BL Lac objects. Recently, TeV gamma-ray emission was detected from a low-energy peaked BL Lac object. Interestingly, this source has also a clear detection of an X-ray jet. We present a detailed study of this X-ray jet and its connection to the radio jet as well as a study of the underlying physical processes in the energetic jet, producing emission from the radio to the T…
The origin of the multiwavelength emission from the high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac 1ES 1218+304 is studied using the data from {\it Swift UVOT/XRT}, {\it NuSTAR} and {\it Fermi-LAT}. A detailed temporal and spectral analysis of the data observed during 2008-2020 in the $γ$-ray ($>100$ MeV), X-ray (0.3-70 keV), and optical/UV bands is performed. The $γ$-ray spectrum is hard with a photon index of $1.71\pm0.02$ above $100$ MeV. The {\it Swift UVOT/XRT} data show a flux increase in the UV/optical and X-ray bands; the highest $0.3-3$ keV X-ray flux was $(1.13\pm0.02)\times10^{-10}{\rm erg\:cm^{-2}…
BL Lac objects can be extreme in two ways: with their synchrotron emission, peaking beyond 1 keV in their spectral energy distribution, or with their gamma-ray emission, peaking at multi-TeV energies up to and beyond 10-20 TeV, like 1ES 0229+200. This second type of extreme BL Lacs --which we can name "TeV-peaked BL Lacs" is not well explained by the usual synchrotron self-Compton scenarios for BL Lacs. These sources are also important as probes for the intergalactic diffuse infrared background and cosmic magnetic fields, as well as possible sites of production of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays…
Most of the ~50 blazars detected to date at TeV energies (E>0.1 TeV) are high-frequency-peaked BL Lacs (HBLs). Only a handful episodic TeV detections of low- and intermediate-frequency-peaked BL Lacs (LBL/IBLs, with synchrotron peak frequencies in the infrared and optical regime) have been reported, typically during high-flux states. The VERITAS array, a ground-based TeV observatory located in southern Arizona has observed five known TeV LBL/IBLs since 2009: 3C 66A, W Comae, PKS 1424+240, S5 0716+714 and BL Lacertae, with at least 5-10 hours/year, which so far resulted in the detection of a br…

Current Cherenkov telescopes have identified a population of ultra-high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects (UHBLs), also known as extreme blazars, that exhibit exceptionally hard TeV spectra, including 1ES 0229+200, 1ES 0347-121, RGB J0710+591, 1ES 1101-232, and 1ES 1218+304. Although one-zone synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) models have been generally successful in interpreting the high-energy emission observed in other BL Lac objects, they are problematic for UHBLs, necessitating very large Doppler factors and/or extremely high minimum Lorentz factors of the emitting leptonic population. In this …
We present the results obtained from our campaign to characterize the intra-night-optical variability properties of blazars detected by the {\it Fermi} Large Area Telescope. This involves R-band monitoring observations of a sample of 18 blazars, that includes five flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and thirteen BL Lac objects (BL Lacs) covering the redshift range z = 0.085$-$1.184. Our observations, carried out using the 1.3 m J.C. Bhattacharya Telescope cover a total of 40 nights ($\sim$200 hrs) between the period 2016 December and 2020 March. We characterized variability using the power enh…
We present a theoretical analysis of the expected X-ray and gamma-ray polarization signatures resulting from synchrotron self-Compton emission in leptonic models, compared to the polarization signatures from proton synchrotron and cascade synchrotron emission in hadronic models for blazars. Source parameters resulting from detailed spectral-energy-distribution modeling are used to calculate photon-energy-dependent upper limits on the degree of polarization, assuming a perfectly organized, mono-directional magnetic field. In low-synchrotron-peaked blazars, hadronic models exhibit substantially …
The majority of the extragalactic sources yet detected at TeV photon energies belong to the class of "high frequency peaked BL Lacs" (HBLs) that exhibit a spectral energy distribution with a lower peak in the X-ray band. Such spectra are well described in terms of a log-parabolic shape with a considerable curvature, and widely interpreted as synchrotron emission from ultrarelativistic electrons outflowing in a relativistic jet; these are expected to radiate also in gamma-rays by the inverse Compton process. Recently we have compared the X-ray spectral parameter distributions of TeV detected HB…
The spectral energy distribution (SED) of blazars is generally understood through the standard one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model, where a strong correlation between X-ray and TeV gamma-ray fluxes is expected. Recently, for Mrk 421 the correlation was confirmed and interpreted within the SSC model arguing that a description of the correlation up to large flux values considerably restricts the value of the magnetic field under the assumption of an electron spectral index independent of the flux state. In this work, we extend the analysis done on Mrk 421 for other two high-energy peak…
Blazars are classified into high, intermediate and low energy peaked sources based on the location of their synchrotron peak. This lies in infra-red/optical to ultra-violet bands for low and intermediate peaked blazars. The transition from synchrotron to inverse Compton emission falls in the X-ray bands for such sources. We present the spectral and timing analysis of 14 low and intermediate energy peaked blazars ob- served with XMMNewton spanning 31 epochs. Parametric fits to X-ray spectra helps constrain the possible location of transition from the high energy end of the syn- chrotron to the …
PG 1553+113 is the first blazar showing an approximately two-year quasi-periodic pattern in its gamma-ray light curve. Such quasi-periodicity might have a geometrical origin, possibly related to the precessing nature of the jet, or could be intrinsic to the source and related to pulsational accretion flow instabilities. By means of a ~2yr very long baseline array (VLBA) monitoring at 15, 24, and 43 GHz we investigate the source pc-scale properties during an entire cycle of gamma-ray activity in the period 2015-2017. In contrast to the well-defined periodicity in the gamma-ray emission, at radi…
BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) is the dominant population of TeV emitting blazars. In this work, we investigate whether there is any special observational properties for TeV sources. To do so, we will compare the observational properties of TeV detected BL Lacs (TeV BLs) and non-TeV detected BL Lac objects (non-TeV BLs). From the 3rd $Fermi$/LAT catalog (3FGL), we can get 662 BL Lacs, out of which, 47 are TeV BLs and 615 are non-TeV BLs. Their multi-wavelength flux densities ($F_{\rm R}$, $F_{\rm O}$, $F_{\rm X}$, $F_γ$), photon spectral indexes ($α_{\rm X}^{\rm ph}$, $α_γ^{\rm ph}$), and effec…
The gamma-ray energy spectra of bright blazars of the LAT Bright AGN Sample (LBAS) are investigated using Fermi-LAT data. Spectral properties (hardness, curvature and variability) established using a data set accumulated over 6 months of operation are presented and discussed for different blazar classes and subclasses: Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs), Low-synchrotron peaked BLLacs (LSP-BLLacs), Intermediate-synchrotron peaked BLLacs (ISP-BLLacs) and High-synchrotron peaked BLLacs (HSP-BLLacs). The distribution of photon index (obtained from a power-law fit above 100 MeV) is found to correl…
The synchrotron hump of the high energy peaked blazars generally lies in the 0.1-10 keV range and such sources show extreme flux and spectral variability in X-ray bands. Various spectral studies showed that the X-ray spectra of high energy peaked blazars are curved and better described by the log-parabolic model. The curvature is attributed to the energy dependent statistical acceleration mechanism. In this work, we review the X-ray spectral studies of high energy peaked blazars. It is found that the log-parabolic model well describes the spectra in a wide energy interval around the peak. The …
We present average R-band optopolarimetric data, as well as variability parameters, from the first and second RoboPol observing season. We investigate whether gamma- ray--loud and gamma-ray--quiet blazars exhibit systematic differences in their optical polarization properties. We find that gamma-ray--loud blazars have a systematically higher polarization fraction (0.092) than gamma-ray--quiet blazars (0.031), with the hypothesis of the two samples being drawn from the same distribution of polarization fractions being rejected at the 3σ level. We have not found any evidence that this discrepanc…
Here we present highlights from VERITAS observations of high-frequency-peaked BL Lac objects (HBLs). We discuss the key science motivations for observing these sources -- including performing multiwavelength campaigns critical to understanding the emission mechanisms at work in HBLs, constraining the intensity and spectra shape of the extragalactic background light, and placing limits on the strength of the intergalactic magnetic field.
We study the synchrotron component of the spectral energy distribution (SED) on the sample of 877 blazars using the ASDC SED Builder Tool with available broadband data from the literature. Our sample includes 423 flat-spectrum radio sources (FSRQs), 361 BL Lac objects and candidates, and 93 blazars of uncertain type. We have made an estimation of the synchrotron peak frequency ($ν_{peak}^{s}$) for the 875 objects and further classified them as high, intermediate and low synchrotron peaked sources (HSPs/ISPs/LSPs). There are 42 HSPs with $ν_{peak}^{s} > 10^{16.5}$ Hz, 222 ISPs with $10^{14.5} <…
Recent detections of very-high-energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray blazars which do not belong to the high frequency peaked BL Lac (HBL) class, suggest that gamma-gamma absorption and pair cascading might occur in those objects. In the presence of even weak magnetic fields, these Compton-supported pair cascades will be deflected and contribute to the Fermi gamma-ray flux of radio galaxies. We demonstrate that, in this scenario, the magnetic field can not be determined from a fit of the cascade emission to the gamma-ray spectrum alone, and the degeneracy can only be lifted if the synchrotron em…
Intermediate-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae objects (IBLs) are a class of blazars characterized by a spectral energy distribution (SED) with a lower-energy synchrotron peak than the majority of extragalactic sources detected by ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). Consequently, the peak gamma-ray flux falls outside the very-high-energy regime (VHE, >100 GeV) covered by IACTs such as VERITAS, making IBLs difficult to detect except during infrequent episodes of elevated flux. However, the study of these sources in a low-flux state is essential for developing a complete un…
Hunting for extreme high-energy-peaked BL Lacs: Rare to find and difficult to classify
INAF – Osservatorio di Astrofisica e Scienza dello Spazio(国家天体物理研究所空间科学与天体物理观测台);Instituto de Astrofisica, Universidad Andres Bello(安第斯贝尔托大学 Astrophysics 研究所)
The high-energy-peaked BL Lac H 2356-309 (z=0.165) was detected by HESS at very high energies (VHE, >100 GeV) with relatively high significance in the years 2004-2007, allowing a good determination of its gamma-ray spectrum. After correction for the interaction with the diffuse extragalactic background light (EBL), the VHE spectrum is flat (Gamma~1.9-2) over a decade in energy, locating the gamma-ray peak around or above 0.6-1 TeV. This is remarkably at odds with the interpretation and modeling provided by HESS, which do not correspond to the source properties and can be excluded with high con…
Blazars can be divided into two sub-classes namely high energy and low energy peaked blazars. In spectral energy distribution, the first synchrotron hump of the former class peaks in UV/X-rays and in IR/optical bands for the latter class. The peak of the spectral energy distribution seems to be responsible for variability properties of these classes of blazars in X-ray and optical bands. Since, in low energy peaked blazars, the X-ray bands lies well below the synchrotron hump, one expects that the highest energy electrons available for the synchrotron emission would have slower effect of varia…

We used the data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope to characterise the γ-ray flux variability of blazars on month-like time scales. Our sample consists of 1120 blazars of which 481 are flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and 639 are BL Lac objects (BL Lacs). We generated monthly binned light curves of our sample for a period of approximately nine years from 2008 August to 2017 December and quantified variability by using excess variance (F_var). On month-like time scales, 371/481 FSRQs are variable ( 80%), while only about 50% (304/639) of BL Lacs are variable. This suggests that FSRQs …
Extreme high-energy peaked BL Lac objects (EHBLs) are an emerging class of blazars with exceptional spectral properties. The non-thermal emission of the relativistic jet peaks in the spectral energy distribution (SED) plot with the synchrotron emission in X-rays and with the gamma-ray emission in the TeV range or above. These high photon energies may represent a challenge for the standard modeling of these sources. They are important for the implications on the indirect measurements of the extragalactic background light, the intergalactic magnetic field estimate, and the possible origin of ext…
Extreme high-energy peaked BL Lac objects (EHBLs) are an emerging class of blazars with exceptional spectral properties. In blazars, the spectral energy distribution (SED) is dominated by the non-thermal emission of the relativistic jet, and consists of two main broad humps. For the EHBLs, these two components peak in the X-ray and GeV-TeV bands, respectively. Although the number of TeV detected extreme blazars is very limited, recent observations by Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs) have revealed that in some of them the energy of the second peak exceeds several TeV (e.g. 1ES 0…
We investigate the physical properties of BL Lac objects (BL Lacs) jets by modeling the quasi-simultaneous spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 22 {\it Fermi} BL Lac objects in the frame of a simple one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model. We obtained the best-fit model parameters and their uncertainties for each BL Lac object through the $χ^2$-minimization procedure and discussed their implications on the physical processes. The modeling results show that the one-zone SSC model can successfully fit the SEDs of high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lacs (HBLs) and intermediate-synchrotron-peaked…
The emission of very-high-energy photons (VHE, E>100 GeV$) in blazars is closely connected to the production of ultra-relativistic particles and the role of these gamma-ray sources as cosmic particle accelerators. This work focuses on a selection of 22 gamma-ray objects from the 2BIGB catalog of high-synchrotron-peaked sources, which are classified as blazar candidates of uncertain type in the 4FGL-DR2 catalog. We study these sources by means of a re-analysis of the first 10 years of gamma-ray data taken with the Fermi Large Area Telescope, including the attenuation by the extragalactic backgr…
We report here results on the analysis of correlated flux variations between the optical and GeV $γ$-ray bands in three bright BL Lac objects, namely AO\, 0235+164, OJ 287 and PKS 2155$-$304. This was based on the analysis of about 10 years of data from the {\it Fermi} Gamma-ray Space Telescope covering the period between 08 August 2008 to 08 August 2018 along with optical data covering the same period. For all the sources, during the flares analysed in this work, the optical and $γ$-ray flux variations are found to be closely correlated. From broad band spectral energy distribution modelling …
We report our ongoing search for extremely inverted spectrum compact radio galaxies, for which the defining feature in the radio spectrum is not the spectral peak, but instead the slope of the spectrum (alpha) in the high-opacity (i.e., lower frequency) part of the radio spectrum. Specifically, our focus is on the spectral regime with spectral index, alpha >+2.5. The motivation for our study is, firstly, extragalactic sources with such extreme spectral index are extremely rare, because of the unavailability of right combination of sensitivity and resolution over a range of low frequencies. The…
In this work we investigate the nature of multi-wavelength variability of blazars from a purely numerical approach. We use a time-dependent one-zone leptonic blazar emission model to simulate multi-wavelength variability by introducing stochastic parameter variations in the emission region. These stochastic parameter variations are generated by Monte Carlo methods and have a characteristic power law index of $α=-2$ in their power spectral densities. We include representative blazar test cases for a flat spectrum radio quasar and a high synchrotron peaked BL Lacertae object for which the high e…
The parsec-scale radio properties of 232 active galactic nuclei (AGNs), most of which are blazars, detected by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope have been observed contemporaneously by the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 5 GHz. Data from both the first 11 months (1FGL) and the first 2 years (2FGL) of the Fermi mission were used to investigate these sources' gamma-ray properties. We use the ratio of the gamma-ray to radio luminosity as a measure of gamma-ray loudness. We investigate the relationship of several radio properties to gamma-ray loudness a…
We present results of very-high-energy gamma-ray observations (E > 160 GeV) of two high-frequency-peaked BL Lac (HBL) objects, 1ES 1218+304 and H 1426+428, with the Solar Tower Atmospheric Cherenkov Effect Experiment (STACEE). Both sources are very-high-energy gamma-ray emitters above 100 GeV, detected using ground-based Cherenkov telescopes. STACEE observations of 1ES 1218+304 and H 1426+428 did not produce detections; we present 99% CL flux upper limits for both sources, assuming spectral indices measured mostly at higher energies.
We present optical, radio, and X-ray observations of SN2020bvc (=ASASSN20bs; ZTF20aalxlis), a nearby ($z=0.0252$; $d$=114 Mpc) broad-lined (BL) Type Ic supernova (SN). Our observations show that SN2020bvc shares several properties in common with the Ic-BL SN2006aj, which was associated with the low-luminosity gamma-ray burst (LLGRB) 060218. First, the 10 GHz radio light curve is on the faint end of LLGRB-SNe ($L_\mathrm{radio} \approx 10^{37}$erg/s): we model our VLA observations (spanning 13-43 d) as synchrotron emission from a mildly relativistic ($v \gtrsim 0.3c$) forward shock. Second, wit…
