One of the fundamental signatures of the Quark Gluon Plasma has been the suppression of heavy flavor (specifically D mesons), which has been measured via the nuclear modification factor, $R_{AA}$ and azimuthal anisotropies, $v_n$, in large systems. However, multiple competing models can reproduce the same data for $R_{AA}$ to $v_n$. In this talk we break down the competing effects that conspire together to successfully reproduce $R_{AA}$ and $v_n$ in experimental data using Trento+v-USPhydro+DAB-MOD. Then using our best fit model we make predictions for $R_{AA}$ and $v_n$ across system size for $^{208}PbPb$, $^{129}XeXe$, $^{40}ArAr$, and $^{16}OO$ collisions. We find that 0--10\% centrality has a non-trivial interplay between the system size and eccentricities such that system size effects are masked in $v_2$ whereas in 30--50\% centrality the eccentricities are approximately constant across system size and, therefore, is a better centrality class to study D meson dynamics across system size.
The Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model coupled to hydrodynamical background is extended to include transport of both light partons and heavy quarks through the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The LBT model includes both elastic and inelastic medium-interaction of both primary jet shower partons and thermal recoil partons within perturbative QCD (pQCD). It is shown to simultaneously describe the experimental data on heavy and light flavor hadron suppression in high-energy heavy-ion collisions for different centralities at RHIC and LHC energies. More detailed in…
We summarize and discuss some of the experimental and theoretical results on heavy flavor, quarkonia, and electro-weak probes presented at Quark Matter 2012.
The role of hadronic matter in the suppression of open heavy flavored mesons has been studied. The heavy-quarks (HQs) suppression factors have been calculated and contrasted with the experimental data obtained from nuclear collisions at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadronic Collider (LHC) experiments. It is found that the suppression in the hadronic phase at RHIC energy is around $20%-25%$ whereas at the LHC it is around $10%-12%$ for the D meson. In case of B meson the hadronic suppression is around $10%-12%$ and $5%-6%$ at RHIC and LHC energies respectively. Present study…
We calculate open heavy-flavor (HF) transport in relativistic heavy-ion collisions by applying a strong-coupling treatment in both macro- and microscopic dynamics (hydrodynamics and non-perturbative diffusion interactions). The hydrodynamic medium evolution is quantitatively constrained by bulk and multi-strange hadron spectra and elliptic flow. The heavy quark (HQ) transport coefficient is evaluated from a non-perturbative $T$-matrix approach in the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) which, close to the critical temperature, leads to resonance formation and feeds into the recombination of heavy quarks …
A new Monte Carlo model of jet quenching in nuclear collisions, CUJET1.0, is applied to predict the jet flavor dependence of the nuclear modification factor for fragments {\it $f=π,D,B,e^-$} from quenched jet flavors {\it $g,u,c,b$} in central collisions at RHIC and LHC. The nuclear modification factors for different flavors are predicted to exhibit a novel level crossing pattern over a transverse momentum range $5< p_T< 100$ GeV which can test jet-medium dynamics in quark gluon plasmas.
We discuss a number of cold nuclear matter effects that can modify open heavy flavor and quarkonium production in proton-nucleus collisions and could thus also affect their production in nucleus-nucleus collisions, in addition to hot quark-gluon plasma production. We show some results for $p+$Pb collisions at sqrt s = 5 TeV at the LHC.
An overview is given of the theoretical developments on heavy quarks and quarkonia in heavy-ion collisions as reported at the "Hard and EM Probes 2018" conference. Specifically, we address progress in the understanding of heavy-flavor diffusion and its hadronization, quarkonium transport and the extraction of quarkonium melting temperatures, energy loss of heavy quarks at high momentum, and their rescattering in small colliding systems.
The stochastic dynamics of c and b quarks in the fireball created in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC is studied employing a relativistic Langevin equation, based on a picture of multiple uncorrelated random collisions with the medium. Heavy-quark transport coefficients are evaluated within a pQCD approach, with a proper HTL resummation of medium effects for soft scatterings. The Langevin equation is embedded in a multi-step setup developed to study heavy-flavor observables in pp and AA collisions, starting from a NLO pQCD calculation of initial heavy-quark yields, complemented in th…
Heavy-quark interactions in the Quark-Gluon Plasma are analyzed in terms of a selfconsistent Brueckner scheme using a thermodynamic $T$-matrix based on a potential model. The interrelations between quarkonium correlators, spectral functions and zero-modes, and open heavy-flavor transport and susceptibilities are elaborated. Independent constraints from thermal lattice QCD can be used to improve predictions for heavy-quark phenomenology in heavy-ion collisions.
We present the reweighting of two sets of nuclear PDFs, nCTEQ15 and EPPS16, using a selection of experimental data on heavy-flavor meson [D0, J/psi, J/psi from B and Upsilon(1S)] production in proton-lead collisions at the LHC which were not used in the original determination of these nuclear PDFs. The reweighted PDFs exhibit significantly smaller uncertainties thanks to these new heavy-flavor constraints. We present a comparison with another selection of data from the LHC and RHIC which were not included in our reweighting procedure. The comparison is overall very good and serves as a validat…
Jet Flavor Tomography is a powerful tool used to probe the properties of Quark Gluon Plasma formed in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. A new Monte Carlo model of jet quenching developed at Columbia University, CUJET, was applied to predict the jet flavor and centrality dependence of the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$. The predictions for fragments $f=π,D,B,e$, derived from quenched jet flavors $a=g,u,c,b$ in central and peripheral collisions at RHIC and LHC, exhibit novel features such as a level crossing pattern in $R_{AA\rightarrow a\rightarrow f}$ over a broad transverse momentum…
We discuss the production of $D$-mesons and $J/ψ$ in high multiplicity proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions within the Color-Glass-Condensate (CGC) framework. We demonstrate that the modification of the LHC data on $D$ and $J/ψ$ yields in high multiplicity events relative to minimum bias events arise from a significant enhancement of the gluon saturation scales of the corresponding rare parton configurations in the colliding protons and nuclei. For a given event multiplicity, we predict these relative yields to be energy independent from $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV at RHIC to the highest LHC ene…
I review the latest heavy flavor measurements at RHIC experiments. Measurements from RHIC together with preliminary results from LHC offer us an opportunity to systematically study the sQGP medium properties. In the end, I will outlook a prospective future on precision heavy flavor measurements with detector upgrades at RHIC.
Heavy flavor hadrons have long been considered as a probe of the quark gluon plasma created in high energy nuclear collisions. In this paper we review the heavy flavor properties under extreme conditions and the realization in heavy ion experiments. After a short introduction on heavy flavor properties in vacuum, we emphasize the cold and hot nuclear matter effects on heavy flavors, including shadowing effect, Cronin effect and nuclear absorption for the former and Debye screening and regeneration for the latter. Then we discuss, in the frame of transport and coalescence models, these medium i…
We get the distributions of shower partons initiated by heavy quarks $c$ and $b$ by studying the fragmentation functions in the framework of the recombination model. The transverse momentum spectra of heavy flavored mesons are predicted with these distributions. We find that the contribution from the recombination of thermal-shower partons is an important part in the total spectrum for the mesons. We predict the heavy flavored meson productions for different centralities with the heavy quark fugacities fitted by the experimental data of $J/ψ$ transverse momentum spectra in Au+Au collisions.
The suppression and collective flow of open and hidden heavy flavor in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions is studied with the partonic transport model Boltzmann Approach to MultiParton Scatterings (BAMPS). Charm and bottom quarks interact with the rest of the medium via elastic scatterings with an improved Debye screening and a running coupling. Heavy flavor electron data from RHIC can only be described if the cross section is multiplied with K=3.5 to mimic the contribution from radiative processes. With the same value for K we compare to elliptic flow data of D mesons at the LHC and find…
Heavy flavor production at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) will allow us to precisely determine the quark/gluon fragmentation processes in vacuum and the nuclear medium especially within the poorly constrained kinematic region. Heavy flavor hadron and jet reconstruction with the recent EIC detector design have been studies in simulation. Results of corresponding physics projections such as the flavor dependent hadron nuclear modification factor $R_{eA}$ in electron+nucleus collisions will be shown. The statistical precision obtained by these proposed heavy flavor measurements for the fu…
We review our transverse momentum dependent factorization and resummation formalism for heavy flavor dijet production at the EIC. In this formalism, we have calculated the heavy flavor mass corrections in the collinear-soft and jet functions, and in the resummed expression for the cross section. By establishing this formalism, we then study the effects of the mass corrections by providing predictions at the EIC for the massive case and for the case where the mass is neglected. We find that the heavy flavor mass effects can give sizable corrections to the predicted asymmetry.
Jet suppression of light and heavy flavor observables is considered to be an excellent tool to study the properties of QCD matter created in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. We calculate the suppression patterns of light hadrons, D mesons, non-photonic single electrons and non-prompt $J/ψ$ in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC. We use a theoretical formalism that takes into account finite size {\it dynamical} QCD medium with finite magnetic mass effects and running coupling, which is integrated into a numerical procedure that uses no free parameters in model testing. We obtain a good agreement wi…
Thermal fluctuations and correlations between the light and heavy-light mesons are explored within a chiral effective theory implementing heavy quark symmetry. We show, that various heavy-light flavor correlations indicate a remnant of the chiral criticality in a narrow range of temperature where the chiral susceptibility exhibits a peak structure. The onset of the chiral crossover, in the heavy-light flavor correlations, is therefore independent from the light flavors. This indicates that the fluctuations carried by strange charmed mesons can also be used to identify the chiral crossover, whi…
A short overview is presented for the recent progress in the theory of heavy flavor transport in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions, including a summary of different transport models, their phenomenological results of heavy meson quenching and flow at RHIC and LHC, a possible solution to the $R_\mathrm{AA}$ vs. $v_2$ puzzle and predictions for heavy flavor observables beyond the current measurements.
We pursue the study of event by event correlations between low-mass particles and heavy mesons flow harmonics in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions and clarify some ambiguities found in one of our previous work.
Both charged hadrons and D mesons are considered to be excellent probes of QCD matter created in ultra relativistic heavy ion collisions. Surprisingly, recent experimental observations at LHC show the same jet suppression for these two probes, which - contrary to pQCD expectations - may suggest similar energy losses for light quarks and gluons in QCD medium. We here use our recently developed energy loss formalism in a finite size dynamical QCD medium to analyze this phenomenon that we denote as the "heavy flavor puzzle at LHC". We show that this puzzle is a consequence of an unusual combinati…
The observed strong suppression of heavy flavored hadrons produced with high $p_T$, is caused by final state interactions with the created dense medium. Vacuum radiation of high-pT heavy quarks ceases at a short time scale, as is confirmed by pQCD calculations and by LEP measurements of the fragmentation functions of heavy quarks. Production of a heavy flavored hadrons in a dense medium is considerably delayed due to prompt breakup of the hadrons by the medium. This causes a strong suppression of the heavy quark yield because of the specific shape of the fragmentation function. The parameter-f…
We present an analysis of the comparison between 2nd and 3rd flow harmonics of $π$, protons and D mesons produced in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. We advocate that such an analysis could turn out to be a good strategy in order to quantify the off-equilibrium dynamics of heavy flavor at lower transverse momentum $p_T$.
n these proceedings I discuss several recent developments in the physics of heavy flavor jets in heavy ion collisions. i) The dijet mass modification in nucleus-nucleus reactions has been proposed as a new observable with enhanced sensitivity to parton energy loss in nuclear matter. It also enables more precise studies of heavy quark mass effects on parton shower formation. ii) Computational techniques from soft-collinear effective theory have allowed us to bridge the gap between high energy and heavy ion QCD phenomenology. I show the first application of the semi-inclusive jet function formal…
A general overview on the role of heavy quarks as probes of the medium formed in high energy nuclear collisions is presented. Experimental data compared to model calculations at low and moderate pT are exploited to extract information on the transport coefficients of the medium, on possible modifications of heavy flavor hadronization in a hot environment and to provide quantitative answers to the issue of kinetic (and chemical, at conceivable future experimental facilities) thermalization of charm. Finally, the role of heavy flavor at high pT as a tool to study the mass and color-charge depend…
The production and space-time evolution of heavy quarks and J/psi in the quark gluon plasma is studied within the partonic transport model Boltzmann Approach to MultiParton Scatterings (BAMPS). This framework allows interactions among all partons: gluons, light quarks and heavy quarks. Heavy quarks, in particular, interact with the rest of the medium via binary scatterings with a running coupling and a more precise Debye screening which is derived from hard thermal loop calculations. We compare our results of the elliptic flow and nuclear modification factor not only to experimental data of he…
We study heavy flavor properties at finite temperature in the framework of a relativistic potential model. With an improved method to solve the three-body Dirac equation, we determine a universal set of model parameters for both mesons and baryons by fitting heavy flavor masses in vacuum. Taking heavy quark potential from lattice QCD simulations in hot medium, we systematically calculate heavy flavor binding energies and averaged sizes as functions of temperature. The meson and baryons are separately sequentially dissociated in the quark-gluon plasma, and the mesons can survive at higher tempe…
Heavy flavor probes are sensitive to the properties of the quark gluon plasma (QGP) produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. A huge amount of effort has been devoted to studying different aspects of the heavy-ion collisions using heavy flavor particles. In this work, we study the dynamics of heavy quark transport in the QGP medium using the rapidity dependence of heavy flavor observables. We calculate the nuclear modification of $\text{B}$ and $\text{D}$ meson spectra as well as spectra of leptons from heavy flavor decays in the rapidity range $[-4.0,4.0]$. We use an implementation of th…
Heavy-flavored hadrons are unique probes to study the properties of hot and dense QCD medium produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC. Transverse spherocity is one of the event-topology variables used to separate jetty and isotropic events from the pool of event samples. This study aims to understand the production dynamics of heavy-flavors through the transverse momentum spectra, double differential yield and mean transverse momentum of J/$ψ$, $\rm D^{0}$ and $Λ_{c}^{+}$ as a function of charged-particle multiplicity and transverse spherocity. Further to investi…
The EPOS-HQ model is a framework designed for predicting heavy-flavor observables both in p-p, p-A and A-A collisions. It results from the integration of the MC$@_s$HQ and EPOS3 codes and should supersede predictions made with each of these two. In this contribution, we briefly present the new ingredients of the EPOS-HQ model as well as some preliminary results. From the comparison with experimental data, we derive some direction of improvement for the near future.
Heavy-flavor observables are valuable probes of the quark-gluon plasma, which is expected to be produced in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. These experiments offer the unique opportunity to study strongly interacting matter at high temperatures and densities in the laboratory. In this overview talk I will summarize the current theoretical status of heavy-flavor production and suppression in heavy-ion collisions and discuss open challenges.
The formation of a hot deconfined medium (Quark-Gluon Plasma) in high-energy nuclear collisions affects heavy-flavor observables. In the low/moderate-pT range transport calculations allow one to simulate the propagation of heavy quarks in the plasma and to evaluate the effect of the medium on the final hadronic spectra: results obtained with transport coefficients arising from different theoretical approaches can be compared to experimental data. Finally, a discussion of possible effects on heavy-flavor observables due to the possible formation of a hot-medium in small systems (like in p-A col…
Using Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, we develop the transverse-momentum-dependent factorization formalism for heavy flavor dijet production in polarized-proton-electron collisions. We consider heavy flavor mass corrections in the collinear-soft and jet functions, as well as the associated evolution equations. Using this formalism, we generate a prediction for the gluon Sivers asymmetry for charm and bottom dijet production at the future Electron-Ion Collider. Furthermore, we compare theoretical predictions with and without the inclusion of finite quark masses. We find that the heavy flavor m…
In a leading order pQCD model, we have studied the heavy flavor production in p+p collisions at RHIC and LHC energy. Leading order pQCD models require a K-factor. At RHIC energy, $\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV, we fix K such that the model reproduces the integrated charm yield, $dN^{c\bar{c}}/dy$, estimated by the STAR and the PHENIX collaboration in p+p collisions. The model then explains the STAR data on the transverse momentum distribution of open charm mesons $(D^0)$ and decay electrons in p+p collisions. The p+p predictions, scaled by the number of binary collisions, also explain the electron spectra…
We proposed a unified framework to describe the interactions of the observed $T_{cc}$, $P_c$, and $P_{cs}$ within a quark level interaction in our previous work. In this work, we generalize our framework to the loosely bound hadronic molecules composed of heavy flavor di-hadrons with strangeness. We predict the possible $D^{(*)}D^{(*)}_s$ molecular states in the SU(3) limit with the masses of the $P_c$ states as the inputs. We also investigate the baryon-meson and baryon-baryon systems and consider the SU(3) breaking effect in their flavor wave functions. We generalize our isospin criterion of…
