While the treatment of conical intersections in molecular dynamics generally requires nonadiabatic approaches, the Born-Oppenheimer adiabatic approximation is still adopted as a valid alternative in certain circumstances. In the context of Mead-Truhlar minimal coupling, this paper presents a new closure of the nuclear Born-Oppenheimer equation, thereby leading to a molecular dynamics scheme capturing geometric phase effects. Specifically, a semiclassical closure of the nuclear Ehrenfest dynamics is obtained through a convenient prescription for the nuclear Bohmian trajectories. The conical intersections are suitably regularized in the resulting nuclear particle motion and the associated Lorentz force involves a smoothened Berry curvature identifying a loop-dependent geometric phase. In turn, this geometric phase rapidly reaches the usual topological index as the loop expands away from the original singularity. This feature reproduces the phenomenology appearing in recent exact nonadiabatic studies, as shown explicitly in the Jahn-Teller problem for linear vibronic coupling. Likewise, a newly proposed regularization of the diagonal correction term is also shown to reproduce quite faithfully the energy surface presented in recent nonadiabatic studies.
We consider the Born-Oppenheimer problem near conical intersection in two dimensions. For energies close to the crossing energy we describe the wave function near an isotropic crossing and show that it is related to generalized hypergeometric functions 0F3. This function is to a conical intersection what the Airy function is to a classical turning point. As an application we calculate the anomalous Zeeman shift of vibrational levels near a crossing.
The standard Born Oppenheimer theory does not give an accurate description of the wave function near points of level crossing. We give such a description near an isotropic conic crossing, for energies close to the crossing energy. This leads to the study of two coupled second order ordinary differential equations whose solution is described in terms of the generalized hypergeometric functions of the kind 0F3(;a,b,c;z). We find that, at low angular momenta, the mixing due to crossing is surprisingly large, scaling like μ^(1/6), where μis the electron to nuclear mass ratio.
The quantum problem of four particles in $\mathbb{R}^d$ ($d\geq 3$), with arbitrary masses $m_1,m_2,m_3$ and $m_4$, interacting through an harmonic oscillator potential is considered. This model allows exact solvability and a critical analysis of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. The study is restricted to the ground state level. We pay special attention to the case of two equally heavy masses $m_1=m_2=M$ and two light particles $m_3=m_4=m$. It is shown that the sum of the first two terms of the Puiseux series, in powers of the dimensionless parameter $σ=\frac{m}{M}$, of the exact phase $Φ$ …
We demonstrate that the molecular Berry phase and the corresponding non-analyticity in the electronic Born-Oppenheimer wavefunction is, in general, not a true topological feature of the exact solution of the full electron-nuclear Schrödinger equation. For a numerically exactly solvable model we show that a non-analyticity, and the associated geometric phase, only appear in the limit of infinite nuclear mass, while a perfectly smooth behavior is found for any finite nuclear mass.
We demonstrate high accuracy calculations for the HeH$^+$ molecule using newly developed analytic formulas for two-center two-electron integrals with exponential functions. The Born-Oppenheimer potential for the ground electronic $^1Σ^+$ state is obtained in the range of 0.1 -- 60 au with precision of about $10^{-12}$ au. As an example at the equilibrium distance $r=1.463\,283$ au the Born-Oppenheimer potential amounts to $-2.978\,708\,310\,771(1)$. Obtained results lay the ground for theoretical predictions in HeH$^+$ with spectroscopic precision.
The quantum reprojection method within the standard adiabatic Born-Oppenheimer approach is derived for multielectron collision systems. The method takes nonvanishing asymptotic nonadiabatic couplings into account and distinguishes asymptotic currents in molecular state and in atomic state channels, leading to physically consistent and reliable results. The method is demonstrated for the example of low-energy inelastic Li+Na collisions, for which the conventional application of the standard adiabatic Born-Oppenheimer approach fails and leads to paradoxes such as infinite inelastic cross section…
The Born-Oppenheimer approximation leads to the counterintuitive result of a vanishing electronic flux density upon vibrational dynamics in the electronic ground state. To circumvent this long known issue, we propose using pairwise anti-symmetrically translated vibronic densities to generate a symmetric electronic density that can be forced to satisfy the continuity equation approximately. The so-called Born-Oppenheimer broken symmetry ansatz yields all components of the flux density simultaneously while requiring only knowledge about the nuclear quantum dynamics on the electronic adiabatic gr…
For rovibronic states corresponding to the $B$ and $B'\ ^1Σ_\text{u}^+$ electronic states of the hydrogen molecule, the pre-Born--Oppenheimer (four-particle) non-relativistic energy is converged to a 1-3 parts-per-billion relative precision. The four-particle non-relativistic energy is appended with leading-order relativistic, leading- and estimated higher-order quantum-electrodynamics corrections. The resulting term values referenced to the rovibronic ground state are obtained in an excellent agreement with the experimental results. Further results are reported and discussed for other rovibro…
We present an efficient general approach to first principles molecular dynamics simulations based on extended Lagrangian Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics in the limit of vanishing self-consistent field optimization. The reduction of the optimization requirement reduces the computational cost to a minimum, but without causing any significant loss of accuracy or longterm energy drift. The optimization-free first principles molecular dynamics requires only one single diagonalization per time step and yields trajectories at the same level of accuracy as "exact", fully converged, Born-Oppenheime…
We analyse a nonadiabatic self-consistent field method by means of an exactly-solvable model. The method is based on nuclear and electronic orbitals that are functions of the cartesian coordinates in the laboratory-fixed frame. The kinetic energy of the center of mass is subtracted from the molecular Hamiltonian operator in the variational process. The results for the simple model are remarkably accurate and show that the integration over the redundant cartesian coordinates leads to couplings among the internal ones.
This report presents a new approach for treating the coupling of electrons and nuclei in quantum mechanical calculations for molecules and condensed matter. It includes the standard "Born-Oppenheimer approximation" as a special case but treats both adiabatic and non-adiabatic corrections using perturbation theory. The adiabatic corrections include all terms that do not explicitly involve the nuclear wavefunctions, so that the nuclei move on a single electronic potential surface. The non-adiabatic corrections, which allow the nuclei to move on more than one potential surface, include coupling b…
The coupling of a molecule and a cavity induces non-adiabaticity in the molecule which makes the description of its dynamics complicated. For polyatomic molecules, reduced-dimensional models and the use of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation (BOA) may remedy the situation. It is demonstrated that contrary to expectation, BOA may even fail in a one-dimensional model and generally expected to fail in two- or more-dimensional models due to the appearance of conical intersections induced by the cavity.
Graph-based linear scaling electronic structure theory for quantum-mechanical molecular dynamics simulations is adapted to the most recent shadow potential formulations of extended Lagrangian Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics, including fractional molecular-orbital occupation numbers, which enables stable simulations of sensitive complex chemical systems with unsteady charge solutions. The proposed formulation includes a preconditioned Krylov subspace approximation for the integration of the extended electronic degrees of freedom, which requires quantum response calculations for electronic s…
Extended Lagrangian Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (XL-BOMD) [Phys. Rev. Lett. vol. 100, 123004 (2008)] is combined with Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) using a DFT+U correction based on the Hubbard model. This combined XL-BOMD and DFT+U approach allows efficient Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations with orbital-dependent corrections beyond regular Kohn-Sham density functional theory. The extended Lagrangian formulation eliminates the need for the iterative self-consistent-field optimization of the electronic ground state prior to the force evaluations, which is requi…
The stability of four fermionic particles with unit charge, of which, two are positively, and two negatively charged, is discussed. Except for using the simplest approximation of a single Gaussian orbital per particle, the problem is exactly solved variationally and, by varying the masses to simulate molecular di-hydrogen, mono-muonated di-hydrogen and di-muonated di-hydrogen, employed to illustrate the celebrated Born-Oppenheimer approximation on the occasion of its 90th anniversary. It is suggested that it is valid only for di-hydrogen.
A system of two bilinearly coupled harmonic oscillators has been solved analytically by using the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) product wavefunction ansatz and the phase-space bound trajectory approach [J. S. Molano et al., Chem. Phys. Lett. \textbf{76}(12), 138171 (2021)]. The bilinearly coupled oscillator system allows to obtain the analytical expression of the quantum system, facilitating comparison with the results of using the BO ansatz product. The analytical and BO wavefunctions are obtained as a product of parabolic cylinder functions. The arguments of the parabolic cylinder functions of the e…
Extended Lagrangian Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics [{\em Phys.\ Rev.\ Lett.\ } {\bf 2008}, {\em 100}, 123004] is presented for Hartree-Fock theory, where the extended electronic degrees of freedom are represented by a density matrix, including fractional occupation numbers at elevated electronic temperatures. In contrast to regular direct Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations, no iterative self-consistent field optimization is required prior to the force evaluations. To sample regions of the potential energy landscape where the gap is small or vanishing, which leads to particula…
In pre-Born-Oppenheimer (pre-BO) theory a molecule is considered as a quantum system as a whole, including the electrons and the atomic nuclei on the same footing. This approach is fundamentally different from the traditional quantum chemistry treatment, which relies on the separation of the motion of the electrons and the atomic nuclei. A fully quantum mechanical treatment of molecules has a great promise for future developments and applications. Its most accurate versions may contribute to the definition of new schemes for metrology and testing fundamental physical theories; its approximate …
The Born-Oppenheimer potential for the $^1Σ_g^+$ state of H$_2$ is obtained in the range of 0.1 -- 20 au, using analytic formulas and recursion relations for two-center two-electron integrals with exponential functions. For small distances James-Coolidge basis is used, while for large distances the Heitler-London functions with arbitrary polynomial in electron variables. In the whole range of internuclear distance about $10^{-15}$ precision is achieved, as an example at the equilibrium distance $r=1.4011$ au the Born-Oppenheimer potential amounts to $-1.174\,475\,931\,400\,216\,7(3)$. Results …
Extended Lagrangian Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics based on Kohn-Sham density functional theory is generalized in the limit of vanishing self-consistent field optimization prior to the force evaluations. The equations of motion are derived directly from the extended Lagrangian under the condition of an adiabatic separation between the nuclear and the electronic degrees of freedom. We show how this separation is automatically fulfilled and system independent. The generalized equations of motion require only one diagonalization per time step and are applicable to a broader range of material…
We present explicit form of non-adiabatic coupling (NAC) elements of nuclear Schroedinger equation (SE) for a coupled tri-state electronic manifold in terms of mixing angles of real electronic basis functions. If the adiabatic-diabatic transformation (ADT) angles are the mixing angles of electronic basis, ADT matrix transforms NAC terms to exactly zeros and brings diabatic form of SE. ADT and NAC matrices satisfy a curl condition and find a novel relation among the mixing angles for irrotational case. We also find that extended Born-Oppenheimer (EBO) equations have meaningful solution and can …
We report on accurate variational calculations of the Born-Oppenheimer potential for excited states of the hydrogen molecule with $Π$, $Δ$, and $Φ$ symmetries. The obtained potential energy curves reach the relative precision of $10^{-9}$ or better along internuclear distances of 0.01 -- 20 au. Calculations rely on recursive evaluation of two-center two-electron molecular integrals with exponential functions in arbitrary precision arithmetics. Our results for most of the states are the first ever reported, and for the previously calculated states constitute an improvement by several orders of …
The main motivation for this work is the exploration of rotational-vibrational states corresponding to electronic excitations in a pre-Born-Oppenheimer quantum theory of molecules. These states are often embedded in the continuum of the lower-lying dissociation channel of the same symmetry, and thus are thought to be resonances. In order to calculate rovibronic resonances, the pre-Born-Oppenheimer variational approach of [J. Chem. Phys. 137, 024104 (2012)], based on the usage of explicitly correlated Gaussian functions and the global vector representation, is extended with the complex coordina…
By employing an analytically solvable model including the Duschinsky rotation effect, we investigated the applicability of the commonly used Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approximation for separating the proton and proton donor-acceptor motions in theories of proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) reactions. Comparison with theories based on the BO approximation shows that, the BO approximation for the proton coordinate is generally valid while some further approximations may become inaccurate in certain range of parameters. We have also investigated the effect of vibrationally coherent tunneling in …
The precision of the photoassociation spectroscopy of Yb dimer in degenerate gases is enough to improve the constraints on the new short-range gravity-like forces if the theoretical knowledge of the Born-Oppenheimer interatomic potential and non-Born-Oppenheimer interactions is refined [M. Borkowski et al. Sci. Rep. A {\bf 9}, 14807 (2019)]. The ground-state interaction potential of ytterbium dimer is investigated at the eXact 2-component core-correlated CCSD(T) level of {\it ab initio} theory in the complete basis set limit with extensive augmentation by diffuse functions. For the small basis…
The role of electron-nuclear entanglement on the validity of the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approximation is investigated. While nonadiabatic couplings generally lead to entanglement and to a failure of the BO approximation, surprisingly the degree of electron-nuclear entanglement is found to be uncorrelated with the degree of validity of the BO approximation. This is because while the degree of entanglement of BO states is determined by their deviation from the corresponding states in the crude BO approximation, the accuracy of the BO approximation is dictated, instead, by the deviation of the BO …
This paper presents the calculation of the electric transition dipole moment in a pre-Born-Oppenheimer framework. Electrons and nuclei are treated equally in terms of the parametrization of the non-relativistic total wave function, which is written as a linear combination of basis functions constructed with explicitly correlated Gaussian functions and the global vector representation. The integrals of the electric transition dipole moment are derived corresponding to these basis functions in both the length and the velocity representation. The complete derivation and the calculations are perfo…
We present a generalization of Extended Lagrangian Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics [Phys. Rev. Lett. vol. 100, 123004 (2008); Eur. Phys. J. B vol. 94, 164 (2021)] that also includes the electronic spin-degrees of freedom as extended dynamical variables. To integrate the combined spin and charge degrees of freedom, we use a preconditioned low-rank Krylov subspace approximation. Our approach is demonstrated for quantum-mechanical molecular dynamics simulations of iron, using spin-polarized self-consistent charge density functional tight-binding theory. We also show how the low-rank Krylov su…
Describing the dynamics of nuclei in molecules requires a potential energy surface, which is traditionally provided by the Born-Oppenheimer or adiabatic approximation. However, we also need to assign masses to the nuclei. There, the Born-Oppenheimer picture does not account for the inertia of the electrons and only bare nuclear masses are considered. Nowadays, experimental accuracy challenges the theoretical predictions of rotational and vibrational spectra and requires to include the participation of electrons in the internal motion of the molecule. More than 80 years after the original work …
In this work we develop tools that enable the study of non-adiabatic effects with variational and diffusion Monte Carlo methods. We introduce a highly accurate wave function ansatz for electron-ion systems that can involve a combination of both fixed and quantum ions. We explicitly calculate the ground state energies of H$_{2}$, LiH, H$_{2}$O and FHF$^{-}$ using fixed-node quantum Monte Carlo with wave function nodes that explicitly depend on the ion positions. The obtained energies implicitly include the effects arising from quantum nuclei and electron-nucleus coupling. We compare our results…
This paper concerns the representation of angular momentum operators in the Born-Oppenheimer theory of polyatomic molecules and the various forms of the associated conservation laws. Topics addressed include the question of whether these conservation laws are exactly equivalent or only to some order of the Born-Oppenheimer parameter $κ=(m/M)^{1/4}$, and what the correlation is between angular momentum quantum numbers in the various representations. These questions are addressed both in problems involving a single potential energy surface, and those with multiple, strongly coupled surfaces; and…
In this work we develop a theory of correlated many-electron dynamics dressed by the presence of a finite-temperature harmonic bath. The theory is based on the ab-initio Hamiltonian, and thus well-defined apart from any phenomenological choice of collective basis states or electronic coupling model. The equation-of-motion includes some bath effects non-perturbatively, and can be used to simulate line- shapes beyond the Markovian approximation and open electronic dynamics which are subjects of renewed recent interest. Energy conversion and transport depend critically on the ratio of electron-el…
Born-Oppenheimer Molecular Dynamics (BOMD) is a powerful but expensive technique. The main bottleneck in a density functional theory bomd calculation is the solution to the Kohn-Sham (KS) equations, that requires an iterative procedure that starts from a guess for the density matrix. Converged densities from previous points in the trajectory can be used to extrapolate a new guess, however, the non-linear constraint that an idempotent density needs to satisfy make the direct use of standard linear extrapolation techniques not possible. In this contribution, we introduce a locally bijective map …
It was recently shown [G. Albareda, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 083003 (2014)] that within the conditional decomposition approach to the coupled electron-nuclear dynamics, the electron-nuclear wave function can be exactly decomposed into an ensemble of nuclear wavepackets effectively governed by nuclear conditional time-dependent potential-energy surfaces (C-TDPESs). Employing a one-dimensional model system we show that for strong nonadiabatic couplings the nuclear C-TDPESs exhibit steps that bridge piecewise adiabatic Born-Oppenheimer PESs. The nature of these steps is identified as an effe…
We present a new method which combines Car-Parrinello and Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics in order to accelerate density functional theory based ab-initio simulations. Depending on the system a gain in efficiency of one to two orders of magnitude has been observed, which allows ab-initio molecular dynamics of much larger time and length scales than previously thought feasible. It will be demonstrated that the dynamics is correctly reproduced and that high accuracy can be maintained throughout for systems ranging from insulators to semiconductors and even to metals in condensed phases. This…
In this work, we illustrate the recently introduced concept of the cavity Born-Oppenheimer approximation for correlated electron-nuclear-photon problems in detail. We demonstrate how an expansion in terms of conditional electronic and photon-nuclear wave functions accurately describes eigenstates of strongly correlated light-matter systems. For a GaAs quantum ring model in resonance with a photon mode we highlight how the ground-state electronic potential-energy surface changes the usual harmonic potential of the free photon mode to a dressed mode with a double-well structure. This change is a…
Can The Mystery of The Born-Oppenheimer Electronic Current Density Be Explained With A Simple Phase Space Electronic Hamiltonian? Yes (And A Lot More Too)
The diagonal Born-Oppenheimer correction (DBOC) stems from the diagonal second derivative coupling term in the adiabatic representation, and it can have an arbitrary large magnitude when a gap between neighbouring Born-Oppenheimer (BO) potential energy surfaces (PESs) is closing. Nevertheless, DBOC is typically neglected in mixed quantum-classical methods of simulating nonadiabatic dynamics (e.g., fewest-switch surface hopping (FSSH) method). A straightforward addition of DBOC to BO PESs in the FSSH method, FSSH+D, has been shown to lead to numerically much inferior results for models containi…
Numerical projection methods are elaborated for the calculation of eigenstates of the non-relativistic many-particle Coulomb Hamiltonian with selected rotational and parity quantum numbers employing shifted explicitly correlated Gaussian functions, which are, in general, not eigenfunctions of the total angular momentum and parity operators. The increased computational cost of numerically projecting the basis functions onto the irreducible representations of the three dimensional rotation-inversion group is the price to pay for the increased flexibility of the basis functions. This increased fl…
The underlying physics behind the molecular harmonic emission in relatively long sin$^2$-like laser pulses is investigated. We numerically solved the full-dimensional electronic time-dependent Schrödinger equation beyond the Born-Oppenheimer approximation for simple molecular ion H$_2^+$. The occurrence and the effect of electron localization, non-adiabatic redshift and spatially asymmetric emission are evaluated to understand better complex patterns appearing in the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) spectrum. Results show that the complex patterns in the HHG spectrum originate mainly from …
We investigate Born-Oppenheimer breakdown (BOB) effects (beyond the usual mass scaling) for the electronic ground states of a series of homonuclear and heteronuclear alkali-metal diatoms, together with the Sr$_2$ and Yb$_2$ diatomics. Several widely available electronic structure software packages are used to calculate the leading contributions to the total isotope shift for commonly occurring isotopologs of each species. Computed quantities include diagonal Born-Oppenheimer corrections (mass shifts) and isotopic field shifts. Mass shifts dominate for light nuclei up to and including K, but fi…
An alternative method is introduced to solve a simple two-dimensional models describing vibrational excitation and dissociation processes during the electron-molecule collisions. The model works with one electronic and one nuclear degree of freedom. The two-dimensional $R$-matrix can be constructed simultaneously on the electronic and nuclear surfaces using all three forms developed previously for electron-atom and electron-molecule collisions. These are the eigenchannel $R$-matrix form, inversion technique of Nesbet and Robicheaux, and the Wigner-Eisenbud-type form using expansion over the po…
Fullerenes are known to be polarizable due to the strained carbon-carbon bonds and high surface curvature. Electronic polarization of fullerenes is of steady practical importance, since it leads to non-additive interactions and, therefore, to unexpected phenomena. For the first time, hybrid density functional theory (HDFT) powered Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics (BOMD) simulations have been conducted to observe electronic polarization and charge transfer phenomena in the C60 fullerene at finite temperature (350 K). The non-additive phenomena are fostered by the three selected imidazolium-b…
