Quantum computation is an emerging technology that promises a wide range of possible use cases. This promise is primarily based on algorithms that are unlikely to be viable over the coming decade. For near-term applications, quantum software needs to be carefully tailored to the hardware available. In this paper, we begin to explore whether near-term quantum computers could provide tools that are useful in the creation and implementation of computer games. The procedural generation of geopolitical maps and their associated history is considered as a motivating example. This is performed by encoding a rudimentary decision making process for the nations within a quantum procedure that is well-suited to near-term devices. Given the novelty of quantum computing within the field of procedural generation, we also provide an introduction to the basic concepts involved.

Automatic generation of level maps is a popular form of automatic content generation. In this study, a recently developed technique employing the {\em do what's possible} representation is used to create open-ended level maps. Generation of the map can continue indefinitely, yielding a highly scalable representation. A parameter study is performed to find good parameters for the evolutionary algorithm used to locate high-quality map generators. Variations on the technique are presented, demonstrating its versatility, and an algorithmic variant is given that both improves performance and change…
Tabu Search (TS) metaheuristic improves simple local search algorithms (e.g. steepest ascend hill-climbing) by enabling the algorithm to escape local optima points. It has shown to be useful for addressing several combinatorial optimization problems. This paper investigates the performance of TS and considers the effects of the size of the Tabu list and the size of the neighbourhood for a procedural content generation, specifically the generation of maps for a popular tabletop game called Terra Mystica. The results validate the feasibility of the proposed method and how it can be used to gener…

In this paper, we present a method for automated persona-driven video game tutorial level generation. Tutorial levels are scenarios in which the player can explore and discover different rules and game mechanics. Procedural personas can guide generators to create content which encourages or discourages certain playstyle behaviors. In this system, we use procedural personas to calculate the behavioral characteristics of levels which are evolved using the quality-diversity algorithm known as Constrained MAP-Elites. An evolved map's quality is determined by its simplicity: the simpler it is, the …

Saliency maps are often used in computer vision to provide intuitive interpretations of what input regions a model has used to produce a specific prediction. A number of approaches to saliency map generation are available, but most require access to model parameters. This work proposes an approach for saliency map generation for black-box models, where no access to model parameters is available, using a Bayesian optimisation sampling method. The approach aims to find the global salient image region responsible for a particular (black-box) model's prediction. This is achieved by a sampling-base…
Recent years have witnessed the rapid development of concept map generation techniques due to their advantages in providing well-structured summarization of knowledge from free texts. Traditional unsupervised methods do not generate task-oriented concept maps, whereas deep generative models require large amounts of training data. In this work, we present GT-D2G (Graph Translation-based Document To Graph), an automatic concept map generation framework that leverages generalized NLP pipelines to derive semantic-rich initial graphs, and translates them into more concise structures under the weak …
Search-based procedural content generation uses stochastic global optimization algorithms to search for game content. However, standard tree search algorithms can be competitive with evolution on some optimization problems. We investigate the applicability of several tree search methods to level generation and compare them systematically with several optimization algorithms, including evolutionary algorithms. We compare them on three different game level generation problems: Binary, Zelda, and Sokoban. We introduce two new representations that can help tree search algorithms deal with the larg…

Minimising the discomfort caused by robots when navigating in social situations is crucial for them to be accepted. The paper presents a machine learning-based framework that bootstraps existing one-dimensional datasets to generate a cost map dataset and a model combining Graph Neural Network and Convolutional Neural Network layers to produce cost maps for human-aware navigation in real-time. The proposed framework is evaluated against the original one-dimensional dataset and in simulated navigation tasks. The results outperform similar state-of-the-art-methods considering the accuracy on the …
