The kinematic structure of the Cygnus OB2 association is investigated. No evidence of expansion or contraction is found at any scale within the region. Stars that are within $\sim$ 0.5 parsecs of one another are found to have more similar velocities than would be expected by random chance, and so it is concluded that velocity substructure exists on these scales. At larger scales velocity substructure is not found. We suggest that bound substructures exist on scales of $\sim$ 0.5 parsecs, despite the region as a whole being unbound. We further suggest that any velocity substructure that existed on scales > 0.5 parsecs has been erased. The results of this study are then compared to those of other kinematic studies of Cygnus OB2.
The main objective of this study is the characterization of the velocity field in the Cygnus OB1 association using the radial velocity data currently available in the literature. This association is part of a larger star-forming complex located in the direction of the Cygnus region, but whose main subsystems may be distributed at different distances from the sun. We have collected radial velocity data for more than 300 stars in the area of 5 x 5 square degrees centred on the Cygnus OB1 association. We present the results of a kinematic clustering analysis in the subspace of the phase space for…
We present a high-precision proper motion study of 873 X-ray and spectroscopically selected stars in the massive OB association Cygnus OB2 as part of the DANCe project. These were calculated from images spanning a 15 year baseline and have typical precisions < 1 mas/yr. We calculate the velocity dispersion in the two axes to be $σ_α(c) = 13.0^{+0.8}_{-0.7}$ and $σ_δ(c) = 9.1^{+0.5}_{-0.5}$ km/s, using a 2-component, 2-dimensional model that takes into account the uncertainties on the measurements. This gives a 3-dimensional velocity dispersion of $σ_{3D} = 17.8 \pm 0.6$ km/s implying a virial …
We use mid-IR images from the Spitzer Cygnus~X Legacy Survey to search for stellar bowshocks, a signature of early type "runaway" stars with high space velocities. We identify ten arc-shaped nebulae containing centrally located stars as candidate bowshocks. New spectroscopic observations of five stars show that all are late O to early B dwarfs. Our morphologically selected sample of bowshock candidates encompasses diverse physical phenomena. Three of the stars appear to be pre-main-sequence objects on the basis of rising SEDs in the mid-IR, and their nebulae may be photon-dominated regions (PD…
The proper motions (PMs) of OB stars in Cygnus have recently been found to exhibit two large-scale kinematic patterns suggestive of expansion. We perform a 3D traceback on these OB stars, the newly-identified OB associations and related open clusters in the region. We find that there are two groups of stars, associations and clusters and that they were each more compact in the past, reaching their closest approach $7.9^{+3.0}_{-1.8}$ and $8.5^{+0.8}_{-2.8}$ Myr ago. We consider two main scenarios for the driver of these large-scale expansion patterns: feedback-driven expansion from a previous …
We analyze orbital solutions for 48 massive multiple-star systems in the Cygnus OB2 Association, 23 of which are newly presented here, to find that the observed distribution of orbital periods is approximately uniform in log P for P<45 d, but it is not scale-free. Inflections in the cumulative distribution near 6 d, 14, d, and 45 d, suggest key physical scales of ~0.2, ~0.4, and ~1 A.U. where yet-to-be-identified phenomena create distinct features. No single power law provides a statistically compelling prescription, but if features are ignored, a power law with exponent beta = -0.22 provides …
The structure of molecular clouds (MCs) holds important clues on the physical processes that lead to their formation and subsequent evolution. While it is well established that turbulence imprints a self-similar structure to the clouds, other processes, such as gravity and stellar feedback, can break their scale-free nature. The break of self-similarity can manifest itself in the existence of characteristic scales that stand out from the underlying structure generated by turbulent motions. We investigate the structure of the Cygnus-X North and the Polaris MCs which represent two extremes in te…
The massive interacting close binary system V729 Cyg (OIa+O/WN9), plausibly progenitor of a Wolf-Rayet system, is studied using new observations gathered over 65 nights and earlier published data. Radial velocity and five colour light curves are analysed simultaneously. Estimated physical parameters of the components are $M_1 = 36\pm 3 M_{\odot}$, $M_2 = 10 \pm 1 M_{\odot}$, $R_1 = 27\pm 1 R_{\odot}$, $R_2 = 15 \pm 0.6 R_{\odot}$, $\log{(L_1/L_{\odot})} = 5.59\pm 0.06$, and $\log{(L_2/L_{\odot})} = 4.65\pm 0.07$. We give only the formal 1$σ$ scatter, but we believe systematic errors in the lum…
Using infrared to (sub)millimeter data from Spitzer, Herschel, the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, and the IRAM 30-m telescope, we conducted an unbiased survey of the massive dense cores (MDCs) in the Cygnus X molecular cloud complex, aimed at characterizing the physical conditions of high-mass star formation (HMSF) at ~0.1 pc scales. We created 5 deg times 6 deg images of the 70-1200 um dust continuum, gas column density, and dust temperature of Cygnus X. A spatial relation between the dense regions (Av > 15) and the developed HII regions was found, indicating the impact of the latter on the g…
Massive binary stars may constitute a substantial fraction of progenitors to supernovae and gamma-ray bursts, and the distribution of their orbital characteristics holds clues to the formation process of massive stars. As a contribution to securing statistics on OB-type binaries, we report the discovery and orbital parameters for five new systems as part of the Cygnus OB2 Radial Velocity Survey. Four of the new systems (MT070, MT174, MT267, and MT734 (a.k.a. VI Cygni #11) are single-lined spectroscopic binaries while one (MT103) is a double-lined system (B1V+B2V). MT070 is noteworthy as the lo…
OB associations are the prime star forming sites in galaxies. However the detailed formation process of such stellar systems still remains a mystery. In this context, identifying the presence of substructures may help tracing the footprints of their formation process. Here, we present a kinematic study of the two massive OB associations Cygnus OB2 and Carina OB1 using the precise astrometry from the Gaia Data Release 2 and radial velocities. From the parallaxes of stars, these OB associations are confirmed to be genuine stellar systems. Both Cygnus OB2 and Carina OB1 are composed of a few dens…
We present a survey of molecular outflows across the dark cloud complex in the Cygnus region, based on 46.75 deg^2 field of CO isotopologues data from Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting (MWISP) survey. A supervised machine learning algorithm, Support Vector Machine (SVM), is introduced to accelerate our visual assessment of outflow features in the data cube of 12CO and 13CO J = 1-0 emission. A total of 130 outflow candidates are identified, of which 77 show bipolar structures and 118 are new detections. Spatially, these outflows are located inside dense molecular clouds and some of them are fou…
Context. Mass loss is an important property in evolution models of massive stars. As up to 90% of the massive stars have a visual or spectroscopic companion and many of them exhibit mass exchange, mass-loss rates can be acquired through the period study of massive binaries. Aims. Using our own photometric observations as well as archival data, we look for variations in orbital periods of seven massive eclipsing binary systems in the Cygnus OB2 association and estimate their mass-loss rates and stellar parameters. Methods. We use a Bayesian parameter estimation method to simultaneously fit the …
We present observations of newly discovered 24 micron circumstellar structures detected with the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) around three evolved stars in the Cygnus-X star forming region. One of the objects, BD+43 3710, has a bipolar nebula, possibly due to an outflow or a torus of material. A second, HBHA 4202-22, a Wolf-Rayet candidate, shows a circular shell of 24 micron emission suggestive of either a limb-brightened shell or disk seen face-on. No diffuse emission was detected around either of these two objects in the Spitzer 3.6-8 micron Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) b…
Cygnus OB2 is a rich OB association in the Galaxy which has experienced intense star formation in the last 20-25 Myr. Its stellar population shows a correlation between age and Galactic longitude. Exploring the chemical composition of its stellar content we will be able to check the degree of homogeneity of the natal molecular cloud and possible effects of self-enrichment processes. Our aim is to determine silicon and oxygen abundances for a sample of eight early-type slow rotators in Cygnus OB2 in order to check possible inhomogeneities across the whole association and whether there exists a …
The role of massive stars is central to an understanding of galactic ecology. It is important to establish the details of how massive stars provide radiative, chemical, and mechanical feedback in galaxies. Central to these issues is an understanding of the evolution of massive stars, and the critical role of mass loss via strongly structured winds and stellar binarity. Ultimately, massive stellar clusters shape the structure and energetics of galaxies. We aim to conduct high-resolution, deep field mapping at 21cm of the core of the massive Cygnus OB2 association and to characterise the propert…
We investigate the young stellar populations associated with DR 18 and ECX 6-21, which are two isolated globules irradiated by the O-type stars of the Cygnus OB2 association. Both are HII regions containing obvious tracers of recent and ongoing star formation. We also study smaller isolated molecular structures in their surroundings. Both globules contain their own embedded populations, with a higher fraction of the less-evolved classes. Masses and temperatures are estimated under the assumption of a common age of 1 Myr, which has been found to appropriately represent the general Cygnus OB2 YS…
2MASS J20395358+4222505 is an obscured early B supergiant near the massive OB star association Cyg OB2. Despite its bright infrared magnitude (K$_{s}$=5.82) it has remained largely ignored because of its dim optical magnitude (B=16.63, V=13.68). In a previous paper we classified it as a highly reddened, potentially extremely luminous, early B-type supergiant. We obtained its spectrum in the U, B and R spectral bands during commissioning observations with the instrument MEGARA@GTC. It displays a particularly strong H$α$ emission for its spectral type, B1 Ia. The star seems to be in an intermedi…
This work provides a statistical analysis of the massive star binary characteristics in the Cygnus OB2 Association using radial velocity information of 114 B3-O3 primary stars and orbital properties for the 24 known binaries. We compare these data to a series of Monte Carlo simulations to infer the intrinsic binary fraction and distributions of mass ratios, periods, and eccentricities. We model the distribution of mass ratio, log-period, and eccentricity as power-laws and find best fitting indices of alpha=0.1+/-0.5, beta=0.2+/-0.4, and gamma=-0.6+/-0.3 respectively. These distributions indica…
