One-dimensional quantum emitters with chiral couplings can exhibit nonreciprocal decay channels, along with light-induced dipole-dipole interactions mediated via an atom-waveguide interface. When the position disorders are introduced to such atomic array, we are able to identify the dynamical phase transition from excitation delocalization to localization, with an interplay between the directionality of decay rates and the strength of light-induced dipole-dipole interactions. Deep in the localization phase, its characteristic length decreases and saturates toward a reciprocal coupling regime, leading to a system dynamics whose ergodicity is strongly broken. We also find an interaction-driven re-entrant behavior of the localization phase and a reduction of level repulsion under strong disorder. The former coincides with a drop in the exponent of power-law decaying von Neumann entropy, which gives insights to a close relation between the preservation of entanglement and nonequilibrium dynamics in open quantum systems, while the latter presents a distinct narrow distribution of gap ratios in this particular disordered system.
By coupling a $Λ$-type quantum emitter to a chiral waveguide, in which the polarization of a photon is locked to its propagation direction, we propose a controllable photon-emitter interface for quantum networks. We show that this chiral system enables the SWAP gate and a hybrid-entangling gate between the emitter and a flying single photon. It also allows deterministic storage and retrieval of single-photon states with high fidelities and efficiencies. In short, this chirally coupled emitter-photon interface can be a critical building block toward a large-scale quantum network.
We show how to generate and control the correlations in a set of two distant quantum emitters coupled to a one-dimensional dissipative plasmonic waveguide. An external laser field enhances the dimer's steady-state correlations and allows an active control (switching on/off) of nonclassical correlations. The plasmon-assisted dipolar-interacting qubits exhibit persistent correlations, which in turn can be decoupled and made to evolve independently from each other. The setup enables long-distance ($\sim 1\, μ$m) qubit control that works for both resonant and detuned emitters. For suitable emitter…
We demonstrate a fiber-integrated quantum optical circulator that is operated by a single atom and that relies on the chiral interaction between emitters and transversally confined light. Like its counterparts in classical optics, our circulator exhibits an inherent asymmetry between light propagation in the forward and the backward direction. However, rather than a magnetic field or a temporal modulation, it is the internal quantum state of the atom that controls the operation direction of the circulator. This working principle is compatible with preparing the circulator in a coherent superpo…
The radiation emitted by a classically pumped three-level $Λ$-type emitter in a resonator cavity featuring both radiative and unwanted losses is studied. In particular, the efficiency of one-photon Fock state excitation of the outgoing wave packet and the spatio-temporal shape of the wave packet are investigated. It is shown that for given shape of the emitter--cavity interaction, adjusting the shape of the pump pulse renders it possible to generate the emission of one-photon Fock state wave packets of desired shape with high efficiency.
We present a fully passive method for implementing a quantum phase gate between two photons travelling in a one-dimensional wave guide. The gate is based on chirally coupled emitters in a three-level $V$ configuration, which only interact through the photon field without any external control fields. We describe the (non-)linear scattering of the emerging polariton states and show that for near resonant photons the scattering dynamics directly implements a perfect control phase gate between the incoming photons in the limit of many emitters. For a finite number of emitters we show that the domi…

Within the framework of exact quantum electrodynamics in dispersing and absorbing media, we have studied the emission from an initially in the upper state prepared emitter in a high quality cavity in the case, when there are two cavity modes that resonantly interact with the emitter. In particular, when one of the modes is in resonance with the emitter transition and the other mode is tuned to the frequency equal to the Rabi splitting of the first mode, the effect of Rabi resonance is observed.
We study the correlated transport of photons through a chain of three-level emitters that are coupled chirally to a photonic mode of a waveguide. It is found that this system can transfer a classical input into a strongly correlated state of light in a unitary manner, i.e. without the necessity of nonlinear photon losses. In particular, we shows that the collective interaction with the emitter ensemble leads to the emergence of highly antibunched light with long-range correlations upon crossing a critical length of the chain. By operating close to conditions of electromagnetically induced tran…
We show that strongly correlated photon transport can be observed in waveguides containing optically dense ensembles of emitters. Remarkably, this occurs even for weak coupling efficiencies. Specifically, we compute the photon transport properties through a chirally coupled system of $N$ two-level systems driven by a weak coherent field, where each emitter can also scatter photons out of the waveguide. The photon correlations arise due to an interplay of nonlinearity and coupling to a loss reservoir, which creates a strong effective interaction between transmitted photons. The highly correlate…
We investigate the single photon scattering by an emitter chirally coupled to a one-dimensional waveguide. The single-photon transport property is essentially different from the symmetrical coupling case. The single photons propagating towards the emitter in opposite directions show different transmission behaviors, which is a manifestation of the single-photon diode. In the ideal chiral coupling case, the transmission probability of the single photon transport in one direction is zero by critical coupling, while in the opposite direction it is unity. The diode works well only when the single-…
Sorting quantum fields into different modes according to their Fock-space quantum numbers is a highly desirable quantum operation. In this Letter, we show that a pair of two-level emitters, chirally coupled to a waveguide, may scatter single- and two-photon components of an input pulse into orthogonal temporal modes with a fidelity $\gtrsim 0.9997$. We develop a general theory to characterize and optimize this process and observe an interesting dynamics in the two-photon scattering regime: while the first emitter gives rise to a complex multimode field, the second emitter recombines the field …
A scheme to utilize atom-like emitters coupled to nanophotonic waveguides is proposed for the generation of many-body entangled states and for the reversible mapping of these states of matter to photonic states of an optical pulse in the waveguide. Our protocol makes use of decoherence-free subspaces (DFS) for the atomic emitters with coherent evolution within the DFS enforced by strong dissipative coupling to the waveguide. By switching from subradiant to superradiant states, entangled atomic states are mapped to photonic states with high fidelity. An implementation using ultracold atoms coup…
Chiral quantum systems have received intensive attention in fundamental physics and applications in quantum information processing including optical isolation and photon unidirectional emission. Here, we design an on-chip emitter-resonator system with strong chiral light-matter interaction for a chiral single-photon interface. The system includes a microring resonator with a strong evanescent field and a near-unity optical chirality along both of the whole outside and inside walls, allowing a strong and chiral coupling of the Whispering-Gallery mode to a quantum emitter. By initializing a quan…
We study theoretically the competition between directional asymmetric coupling and disorder in a one-dimensional array of quantum emitters chirally coupled through a waveguide mode. Our calculation reveals highly nontrivial phase diagram for the eigenstates spatial profile, nonmonotonously depending on the disorder and directionality strength. The increase of the coupling asymmetry drives the transition from Anderson localization in the bulk through delocalized states to chirality-induced localization at the array edge. Counterintuitively, this transition is not smeared by strong disorder but …
Quantum networks provide a prominent platform for realizing quantum information processing and quantum communication, with entanglement being a key resource in such applications. Here, we describe the dissipative transport protocol for entangled states, where entanglement stored in the first node of quantum network can be transported with high fidelity to the second node via a 1D chiral waveguide. In particular, we exploit the directional asymmetry in chirally-coupled single-mode ring resonators to transport entangled states. For the fully chiral waveguide, Bell states, multipartite $W$-states…
In our work, we study the dynamics of a single excitation in an one-dimensional array of two-level systems, which are chirally coupled through a single mode waveguide. The chirality is achieved owing to a strong optical spin-locking effect, which in an ideal case gives perfect unidirectional excitation transport. We obtain a simple analytical solution for a single excitation dynamics in the Markovian limit, which directly shows the tolerance of the system with respect to the fluctuations of emitters position. We also show that the Dicke state, which is well-known to be superradiant, has twice …
The scattering between light and individual saturable quantum emitters can induce strong optical nonlinearities and correlations between individual light quanta. Typically, this leads to an effective attraction that can generate exotic bound states of photons, which form quantum mechanical precursors of optical solitons, as found in many optical media. Here, we study the propagation of light through an optical waveguide that is chirally coupled to three-level quantum emitters. We show that the additional laser-coupling to a third emitter state not only permits to control the properties of the …
Single-photon emitters in solid-state systems are important building blocks for scalable quantum technologies. Recently, quantum light emitters have been discovered in the wide-gap van der Waals insulator hBN. These color centers have attracted considerable attention due to their quantum performance at elevated temperatures and wide range of transition energies. Here, we demonstrate coherent state manipulation of a single hBN color center with ultrafast laser pulses and investigate in our joint experiment-theory study the coupling between the electronic system and phonons. We demonstrate that …
We discuss a technique to strongly couple a single target quantum emitter to a cavity mode, which is enabled by virtual excitations of a nearby mesoscopic ensemble of emitters. A collective coupling of the latter to both the cavity and the target emitter induces strong photon non-linearities in addition to polariton formation, in contrast to common schemes for ensemble strong coupling. We demonstrate that strong coupling at the level of a single emitter can be engineered via coherent and dissipative dipolar interactions with the ensemble, and provide realistic parameters for a possible impleme…
We investigate the emission properties of a single semiconductor quantum dot deterministically coupled to a confined optical mode in the weak coupling regime. A strong pulling, broadening and narrowing of the cavity mode emission is evidenced when changing the spectral detuning between the emitter and the cavity. These features are theoretically accounted for by considering the phonon assisted emission of the quantum dot transition. These observations highlight a new situation for cavity quantum electrodynamics involving spectrally broad emitters.
Color centers in solid state crystals have become a frequently used system for single photon generation, advancing the development of integrated photonic devices for quantum optics and quantum communication applications. In particular, defects hosted by two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) are a promising candidate for next-generation single photon sources, due to its chemical and thermal robustness and high brightness at room temperature. The 2D crystal lattice of hBN allows for a high extraction efficiency and easy integration into photonic circuits. Here we develop plasma etch…
We investigate the entanglement dynamics of two two-level emitters (qubits) mediated by a semiinfinite, one-dimensional (1D) photonic waveguide. The coupling of each qubit to the waveguide is chiral, which depends on the propagation direction of light. The finite end of the waveguide is terminated by a perfect mirror, such that coherent quantum feedback is introduced to the system. We show that the chirally generated entanglement between the qubits can be preserved by controlling the time delay of the feedback. Moreover, when the time delay is negligible, the qubit-qubit reduced system evolves…
We theoretically demonstrate coherent control over propagation of surface plasmon polaritons(SPP), at both telecommunication and visible wavelengths, on a metallic surface adjacent to quantum coherence (phaseonium) medium composed of three-level quantum emitters (semiconductor quantum dots, atoms, rare-earth ions, etc.) embedded in a dielectric host. The coherent drive allows us to provide sufficient gain for lossless SPP propagation and also lowers the pumping requirements. In case of lossy propagation, an order of magnitude enhancement in propagation length can be achieved. Optical control o…

Pure and bright single photon sources have recently been obtained by inserting solid-state emitters in photonic nanowires or microcavities. The cavity approach presents the attractive possibility to greatly increase the source operation frequency. However, it is perceived as technologically demanding because the emitter resonance must match the cavity resonance. Here we show that the spectral matching requirement is actually strongly lifted by the intrinsic coupling of the emitter to its environment. A single photon source consisting of a single InGaAs quantum dot inserted in a micropillar cav…
Color centers in solids are the fundamental constituents of a plethora of applications such as lasers, light emitting diodes and sensors, as well as the foundation of advanced quantum information and communication technologies. Their photoluminescence properties are usually studied under Stokes excitation, in which the emitted photons are at a lower energy than the excitation ones. In this work, we explore the opposite Anti-Stokes process, where excitation is performed with lower energy photons. We report that the process is sufficiently efficient to excite even a single quantum system, namely…
Modifying light fields at single-photon level is a key challenge for upcoming quantum technologies and can be realized in a scalable manner through integrated quantum photonics. Laser-written diamond photonics offers three-dimensional fabrication capabilities and large mode-field diameters matched to fiber optic technology, though limiting the cooperativity at the single-emitter level. To realize large cooperativities, we combine excitation of single shallow-implanted silicon vacancy centers via large numerical aperture optics with detection assisted by laser-written type-II waveguides. We dem…
The ability to harness light-matter interactions at the few-photon level plays a pivotal role in quantum technologies. Single photons - the most elementary states of light - can be generated on-demand in atomic and solid state emitters. Two-photon states are also key quantum assets, but achieving them in individual emitters is challenging because their generation rate is much slower than competing one-photon processes. We demonstrate that atomically thin plasmonic nanostructures can harness two-photon spontaneous emission, resulting in giant far-field two-photon production, a wealth of resonan…
Graphene plasmons provide a suitable alternative to noble-metal plasmons because they exhibit much larger confinement and relatively long propagation distances, with the advantage of being highly tunable via electrostatic gating. We report strong light- matter interaction assisted by graphene plasmons, and in particular, we predict unprecedented high decay rates of quantum emitters in the proximity of a carbon sheet, large vacuum Rabi splitting and Purcell factors, and extinction cross sections exceeding the geometrical area in graphene ribbons and nanometer-sized disks. Our results provide th…
Despite the recognition of two-dimensional (2D) systems as emerging and scalable host materials of single photon emitters or spin qubits, uncontrolled and undetermined chemical nature of these quantum defects has been a roadblock to further development. Leveraging the design of extrinsic defects can circumvent these persistent issues and provide an ultimate solution. Here we established a complete theoretical framework to accurately and systematically design quantum defects in wide-bandgap 2D systems. With this approach, essential static and dynamical properties are equally considered for spin…
Realization of quantum photonic devices requires coupling single quantum emitters to the mode of optical resonators. In this work we present a hybrid system consisting of defect centers in few-layer hBN grown by chemical vapor deposition and a fiber-based Fabry-Perot cavity. The sub 10 nm thickness of hBN and its smooth surface enables efficient integration into the cavity mode. We operate our hybrid platform over a broad spectral range larger than 30 nm and use its tuneability to explore different coupling regimes. Consequently, we achieve very large cavity-assisted signal enhancement up to 5…
The study of molecular polaritons beyond simple quantum emitter ensemble models (e.g., Tavis-Cummings) is challenging due to the large dimensionality of these systems (the number of molecular emitters is $N\approx 10^{6}-10^{10}$) and the complex interplay of molecular electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom. This complexity constraints existing models to either coarse-grain the rich physics and chemistry of the molecular degrees of freedom or artificially limit the description to a small number of molecules. In this work, we exploit permutational symmetries to drastically reduce the computa…
