In this article, we give all the Weitzenböck-type formulas among the geometric first order differential operators on the spinor fields with spin $j+1/2$ over Riemannian spin manifolds of constant curvature. Then we find an explicit factorization formula of the Laplace operator raised to the power $j+1$ and understand how the spinor fields with spin $j+1/2$ are related to the spinors with lower spin. As an application, we calculate the spectra of the operators on the standard sphere and clarify the relation among the spinors from the viewpoint of representation theory. Next we study the case of trace-free symmetric tensor fields with an application to Killing tensor fields. Lastly we discuss the spinor fields coupled with differential forms and give a kind of Hodge-de Rham decomposition on spaces of constant curvature.
(This is a revised version of the paper) - In the present paper we study the geometry of doubly extended Lie groups with their natural biinvariant metric. We describe the curvature, the holonomy and the space of parallel spinors. This is completely done for all simply connected groups with biinvariantmetric of Lorentzian signature $(1,n-1)$, of signature $(2,n-2)$ and of signature $(p,q)$, where $p+q\leq 6$. Furthermore, some special series with higher signature are discussed.
Extended spinor connections associated with composite spin-tensorial bundles are considered. Commutation relationships for covariant and multivariate differentiations and corresponding curvature spin-tensors are derived.
Using spinorial techniques, we prove, for a class of pseudo-hyperbolic ambient manifolds, a Heintze-Karcher type inequality. We then use this inequality to show an Alexandrov type theorem in such spaces.
We define (higher rank) spinorially twisted spin structures and deduce various curvature identites as well as estimates for the eigenvalues of the corresponding twisted Dirac operators.
A spinorial approach to 6-dimensional differential geometry is constructed and used to analyze tensor fields of low rank, with special attention to the Weyl tensor. We perform a study similar to the 4-dimensional case, making full use of the SO(6) symmetry to uncover results not easily seen in the tensorial approach. Using spinors, we propose a classification of the Weyl tensor by reinterpreting it as a map from 3-vectors to 3-vectors. This classification is shown to be intimately related to the integrability of maximally isotropic subspaces, establishing a natural framework to generalize the …
We present a global representation for surfaces in 3-dimensional hyperbolic space with constant mean curvature 1 (CMC-1 surfaces) in terms of holomorphic spinors. This is a modification of Bryant's representation. It is used to derive explicit formulas in hypergeometric functions for CMC-1 surfaces of genus 0 with three regular ends which are asymptotic to catenoid cousins (CMC-1 trinoids).
I apply the algebraic classification of self-adjoint endomorphisms of ${\bf R}^{2,2}$ provided by their Jordan canonical form to the Ricci curvature tensor of four-dimensional neutral manifolds and relate this classification to an algebraic classification of the Ricci curvature spinor. These results parallel similar results well known in four-dimensional Lorentzian geometry. The classification is summarized in Table 2 at the end of the paper.
I discuss geometry and normal forms for pseudo-Riemannian metrics with parallel spinor fields in some interesting dimensions. I also discuss the interaction of these conditions for parallel spinor fields with the condition that the Ricci tensor vanish (which, for pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, is not an automatic consequence of the existence of a nontrivial parallel spinor field).
Two explicit formulas for metric connections in the bundle of Dirac spinors are studied. Their equivalence is proved. The explicit formula relating the spinor curvature tensor with the Riemann curvature tensor is rederived.
We analyze the level sets of the norm of the Witten spinor in an asymptotically flat Riemannian spin manifold of positive scalar curvature. Level sets of small area are constructed. We prove curvature estimates which quantify that, if the total mass becomes small, the manifold becomes flat with the exception of a set of small surface area. These estimates involve either a volume bound or a spectral bound for the Dirac operator on a conformal compactification, but they are independent of the isoperimetric constant.
Under some dimension restrictions, we prove that totally umbilical hypersurfaces of Spin$^c$ manifolds carrying a parallel, real or imaginary Killing spinor are of constant mean curvature. This extends to the Spin$^c$ case the result of O. Kowalski stating that, every totally umbilical hypersurface of an Einstein manifold of dimension greater or equal to $3$ is of constant mean curvature. As an application, we prove that there are no extrinsic hypersheres in complete Riemannian Spin manifolds of non-constant sectional curvature carrying a parallel, Killing or imaginary Killing spinor.
We describe all almost contact metric, almost hermitian and $G_2$-structures admitting a connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion tensor, and prove that there exists at most one such connection. We investigate its torsion form, its Ricci tensor, the Dirac operator and the $\nabla$-parallel spinors. In particular, we obtain solutions of the type II string in dimension $n=5,6$ and 7.
We study symplectic manifolds $(M^{2l},ω)$ equipped with a symplectic torsion-free affine (also called Fedosov) connection $\nabla$ and admitting a metaplectic structure. Let $\mathcal{S}$ be the so called symplectic spinor bundle and let $R^S$ be the curvature tensor field of the symplectic spinor covariant derivative $\nabla^S$ associated to the Fedosov connection $\nabla.$ It is known that the space of symplectic spinor valued exterior differential 2-forms, $Γ(M,\bigwedge^2T^*M\otimes {\mathcal{S}}),$ decomposes into three invariant spaces with respect to the structure group, which is the m…
We compute the scalar curvature of 7-dimensional ${G}_2$-manifolds admitting a connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion. We prove the formula for the general solution of the Killing spinor equation and express the Riemannian scalar curvature of the solution in terms of the dilation function and the NS 3-form field. In dimension n=7 the dilation function involved in the second fermionic string equation has an interpretation as a conformal change of the underlying integrable ${G}_2$-structure into a cocalibrated one of pure type $W_3$.
Let $(M_1,\textit{g}^{(1)})$, $(M_2,\textit{g}^{(2)})$ be closed Riemannian spin manifolds. We study the existence of solutions of the spinorial Yamabe problem on the product $M_1\times M_2$ equipped with a family of metrics $\varepsilon^{-2}\textit{g}^{(1)}\oplus\textit{g}^{(2)}$, $\varepsilon>0$. Via variational methods and blow-up techniques, we prove the existence of solutions which depend only on the factor $M_1$, and which exhibit a spike layer as $\varepsilon\to0$. Moreover, we locate the asymptotic position of the peak points of the solutions in terms of the curvature tensor on $(M_1,\…
On $Spin^c$ manifolds, we study the Energy-Momentum tensor associated with a spinor field. First, we give a spinorial Gauss type formula for oriented hypersurfaces of a $Spin^c$ manifold. Using the notion of generalized cylinders, we derive the variationnal formula for the Dirac operator under metric deformation and point out that the Energy-Momentum tensor appears naturally as the second fundamental form of an isometric immersion. Finally, we show that generalized $Spin^c$ Killing spinors for Codazzi Energy-Momentum tensor are restrictions of parallel spinors.
The basic first-order differential operators of spin geometry that are Dirac operator and twistor operator are considered. Special types of spinors defined from these operators such as twistor spinors and Killing spinors are discussed. Symmetry operators of massless and massive Dirac equations are introduced and relevant symmetry operators of twistor spinors and Killing spinors are constructed from Killing-Yano (KY) and conformal Killing-Yano (CKY) forms in constant curvature and Einstein manifolds. The squaring map of spinors gives KY and CKY forms for Killing and twistor spinors respectively…
Since the first work of Thomas Friedrich showing that isometric immersions of Riemann surfaces are related to spinors and the Dirac equation, various works appeared generalizing this approach to more general Spin-manifolds, in particular the case of submanifolds of Spin-manifolds of constant curvature. In the present work we investigate the case of submanifolds of SpinC-manifolds of constant curvature.
We show that it is natural to consider the energy-momentum tensor associated with a spinor field as the second fundamental form of an isommetric immersion. In particular we give a generalization of the warped product construction over a Riemannian manifold leading to this interpretation. Special sections of the spinor bundle, generalizing the notion of Killing spinor, are studied. First applications of such a construction are then given.
Spinor fields depending on tensor fields and other spinor fields are considered. The concept of extended spinor fields is introduced and the theory of differentiation for such fields is developed.
We give a spinorial characterization of isometrically immersed surfaces into 3-dimensional homogeneous manifolds with 4-dimensional isometry group in terms of the existence of a particular spinor, called generalized Killing spinor. This generalizes results by T. Friedrich for $\R^3$ and B. Morel for $\Ss^3$ and $\HH^3$. The main argument is the interpretation of the energy-momentum tensor of a genralized Killing spinor as the second fondamental form up to a tensor depending on the structure of the ambient space
We study invariant systems of PDEs defining Killing vector-valued forms, and then we specialize to Killing spinor-valued forms. We give a detailed treatment of their prolongation and integrability conditions by relating the point-wise values of solutions to the curvature of the underlying manifold. As an example, we completely solve the equations on model spaces of constant curvature producing brand new solutions which do not come from the tensor product of Killing spinors and Killing-Yano forms.
We consider gauged twistor spinors which are supersymmetry generators of supersymmetric and superconformal field theories in curved backgrounds. We show that the spinor bilinears of gauged twistor spinors satify the gauged conformal Killing-Yano equation. We prove that the symmetry operators of the gauged twistor spinor equation can be constructed from ordinary conformal Killing-Yano forms in constant curvature backgrounds. This provides a way to obtain gauged twistor spinors from ordinary twistor spinors.
A closed spin Kähler manifold of positive scalar curvature with smallest possible first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator is characterized by holomorphic spinors. It is shown that on any spin Kähler-Einstein manifold each holomorphic spinor is a finite sum of eigenspinors of the square of the Dirac operator. Vanishing theorems for holomorphic spinors are proved.
We study the geometric properties of a $2m$-dimensional complex manifold $\mathcal{M}$ admitting a holomorphic reduction of the frame bundle to the structure group $P \subset \mathrm{Spin}(2m,\mathbb{C})$, the stabiliser of the line spanned by a pure spinor at a point. Geometrically, $\mathcal{M}$ is endowed with a holomorphic metric $g$, a holomorphic volume form, a spin structure compatible with $g$, and a holomorphic pure spinor field $ξ$ up to scale. The defining property of $ξ$ is that it determines an almost null structure, ie an $m$-plane distribution $\mathcal{N}_ξ$ along which $g$ is …
We construct exact solutions of the Einstein-Dirac equation, which couples the gravitational field with an eigenspinor of the Dirac operator via the energy-momentum tensor. For this purpose we introduce a new field equation generalizing the notion of Killing spinors. The solutions of this spinorial field equation are called weak Killing spinors (WK-spinors). They are special solutions of the Einstein-Dirac equation and in dimension n=3 the two equations essentially coincide. It turns out that any Sasakian manifold with Ricci tensor related in some special way to the metric tensor as well as to…
Smooth deformations of a Minkowski type metric in a four-dimensional space-time manifold are considered. Deformations of the basic spin-tensorial fields associated with this metric are calculated and their application to calculating the energy-momentum tensor of a massive spin 1/2 particle is shown.
We give a spinorial characterization of isometrically immersed hypersurfaces into 4-dimensional space forms and product spaces $\M^3(κ)\times\R$, in terms of the existence of particular spinor fields, called generalized Killing spinors or equivalently solutions of a Dirac equation. This generalizes to higher dimensions several recent results for surfaces by T. Friedrich, B. Morel and the two authors. The main argument is the interpretation of the energy-momentum tensor of a generalized Killing spinor as the second fundamental form, possibly up to a tensor depending on the ambient space. As an …
The present note deals with the properties of metric connections $\nabla$ with vectorial torsion $V$ on semi-Riemannian manifolds $(M^n,g)$. We show that the $\nabla$-curvature is symmetric if and only if $V^{\flat}$ is closed, and that $V^\perp$ then defines an $(n-1)$-dimensional integrable distribution on $M^n$. If the vector field $V$ is exact, we show that the $V$-curvature coincides up to global rescaling with the Riemannian curvature of a conformally equivalent metric. We prove that it is possible to construct connections with vectorial torsion on warped products of arbitrary dimension …
We study the geometric properties of a $(2m+1)$-dimensional complex manifold $\mathcal{M}$ admitting a holomorphic reduction of the frame bundle to the structure group $P \subset \mathrm{Spin}(2m+1,\mathbb{C})$, the stabiliser of the line spanned by a pure spinor at a point. Geometrically, $\mathcal{M}$ is endowed with a holomorphic metric $g$, a holomorphic volume form, a spin structure compatible with $g$, and a holomorphic pure spinor field $ξ$ up to scale. The defining property of $ξ$ is that it determines an almost null structure, i.e.\ an $m$-plane distribution $\mathcal{N}_ξ$ along whic…
On a Kähler spin manifold Kählerian twistor spinors are a natural analogue of twistor spinors on Riemannian spin manifolds. They are defined as sections in the kernel of a first order differential operator adapted to the Kähler structure, called Kählerian twistor (Penrose) operator. We study Kählerian twistor spinors and give a complete description of compact Kähler manifolds of constant scalar curvature admitting such spinors. As in the Riemannian case, the existence of Kählerian twistor spinors is related to the lower bound of the spectrum of the Dirac operator.
We introduce a notion of twisted pure spinor in order to characterize, in a unified way, all the special Riemannian holonomy groups just as a classical pure spinor characterizes the special Kähler holonomy. Motivated by certain curvature identities satisfied by manifolds admitting parallel twisted pure spinors, we also introduce the Clifford monopole equations as a natural geometric generalization of the Seiberg-Witten equations. We show that they restrict to the Seiberg-Witten equations in 4 dimensions, and that they admit non-trivial solutions on manifolds with special Riemannian holonomy.
Suppose that $Σ=\partialΩ$ is the $n$-dimensional boundary, with positive (inward) mean curvature $H$, of a connected compact $(n+1)$-dimensional Riemannian spin manifold $(Ω^{n+1},g)$ whose scalar curvature $R\ge -n(n+1)k^2$, for some $k\textgreater{}0$. If $Σ$ admits an isometric and isospin immersion $F$ into the hyperbolic space ${\mathbb{H}^{n+1}\_{-k^2}}$, we define a quasi-local mass and prove its positivity as well as the associated rigidity statement. The proof is based on a holographic principle for the existence of an imaginary Killing spinor. For $n=2$, we also show that its limit,…
We prove the existence of harmonic spinor fields in axisymmetric Riemannian 3-manifolds having nonnegative scalar curvature and asymptotic to the usual constant time hypersurface of Melvin's magnetic universe. Such a spinor can be used in the proof of the uniqueness of the magnetized Schwarzschild solution.
This paper generalizes classical spin geometry to the setting of weighted manifolds (manifolds with density) and provides applications to the Ricci flow. Spectral properties of the naturally associated weighted Dirac operator, introduced by Perelman, and its relationship with the weighted scalar curvature are investigated. Further, a generalization of the ADM mass for weighted asymptotically Euclidean (AE) manifolds is defined; on manifolds with nonnegative weighted scalar curvature, it satisfies a weighted Witten formula and thereby a positive weighted mass theorem. Finally, on such manifolds…
On a compact surface endowed with any $\Spinc$ structure, we give a formula involving the Energy-Momentum tensor in terms of geometric quantities. A new proof of a Bär-type inequality for the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator is given. The round sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ with its canonical $\Spinc$ structure satisfies the limiting case. Finally, we give a spinorial characterization of immersed surfaces in $\mathbb{S}^2\times \mathbb{R}$ by solutions of the generalized Killing spinor equation associated with the induced $\Spinc$ structure on $\mathbb{S}^2\times \mathbb{R}$
Spinor representations of surfaces immersed into 4-dimensional pseudo-riemannian manifolds are defined in terms of minimal left ideals and tensor decompositions of Clifford algebras. The classification of spinor fields and Dirac operators on the immersed surfaces is given. The Dirac-Hestenes spinor field on surfaces immersed into Lorentzian manifolds and on surfaces conformally immersed into Minkowski spacetime is defined.
We generalize the spinorial characterization of isometric immersions of surfaces in R^3 given by T. Friedrich (On the spinor representation of surfaces in Euclidean 3-space, J. Geom. Phys. 28 (1998)) to surfaces in S^3 and H^3. The main argument is the interpretation of the energy-momentum tensor associated with a special spinor field as a second fundamental form. It turns out that such a characterization of isometric immersions in terms of a special section of the spinor bundle also holds in the case of hypersurfaces in the Euclidean 4-space.
We study Kohn-Dirac operators $D_θ$ on strictly pseudoconvex CR manifolds with ${\rm spin}^{\mathbb C}$ structure of weight $\ell\in{\mathbb Z}$. Certain components of $D_θ$ are CR invariants. We also derive CR invariant twistor operators of weight $\ell$. Harmonic spinors correspond to cohomology classes of some twisted Kohn-Rossi complex. Applying a Schrödinger-Lichnerowicz-type formula, we prove vanishing theorems for harmonic spinors and (twisted) Kohn-Rossi groups. We also derive obstructions to positive Webster curvature.
We construct non-trivial elements of order 2 in the homotopy groups $π_{8j+1+*} Diff(D^6,\partial)$, for * congruent 1 or 2 modulo 8, which are detected by the "assembling homomorphism" (giving rise to the Gromoll filtration), followed by the alpha-invariant in $KO_*=Z/2$. These elements are constructed by means of Morlet's homotopy equivalence between $Diff(D^6,\partial)$ and $Ω^7(PL_6/O_6)$, and Toda brackets in $PL_6/O_6$. We also construct non-trivial elements of order 2 in $π_* PL_m$ for every m greater or equal to 6 and * congruent to 1 or 2 modulo 8, which are detected by the alpha-inva…
We derive a weighted $L^2$-estimate of the Witten spinor in a complete Riemannian spin manifold $(M^n,g)$ of non-negative scalar curvature which is asymptotically Schwarzschild. The interior geometry of $M$ enters this estimate only via the lowest eigenvalue of the square of the Dirac operator on a conformal compactification of $M$.
