A light Higgs portal scalar could be abundantly produced in the earth's atmosphere and decay in large-volume neutrino detectors. We point out that the Hyper-Kamiokande detector bears a strong discovery potential of probing such particles in an uncharted parameter space that is actively explored by intensity frontier experiments including rare kaon decays. The signal we propose to look for is electron-positron pair creation that manifests as a double-ring appearing from the same vertex. Most of these pairs originate from zenith angles above the Hyper-K detector's horizon. This search can be generalized to other new light states and is highly complementary to beam experiments.
We consider the collider signals arising from kinetic mixing between the hypercharge gauge boson of the Standard Model and its twin counterpart in the Mirror Twin Higgs model, in the framework in which the twin photon is massive. Through the mixing, the Standard Model fermions acquire charges under the mirror photon and the mirror Z boson. We determine the current experimental bounds on this scenario, and show that the mixing can be large enough to discover both the twin photon and the twin Z at the LHC, or at a future 100 TeV hadron collider, with dilepton resonances being a particularly cons…
Extended Higgs sectors have been studied extensively in context of dark matter phenomenology in tandem with other aspects. In this study, we compute radiative corrections to the dark matter-Higgs portal coupling, which is in fact a common feature of all scalar dark matter models irrespective of the hypercharge of the multiplet from which the dark matter candidate emerges. We select the popular inert doublet model (IDM) as a prototype in order to demonstrate the impact of the next-to-leading order corrections, thereby probing the plausibility of extending the allowed parameter space through qua…
We discuss a new type of Higgs-portal dark matter (DM)-production mechanism, called bosonic-seesaw portal (BSP) scenario. The BS provides the dynamical origin of the electroweak symmetry breaking, triggered by mixing between the elementary Higgs and a composite Higgs generated by a new-color strong dynamics, hypercolor (HC). At the HC strong coupling scale, the classical-scale invariance assumed in the model is dynamically broken as well as the "chiral" symmetry present in the HC sector. In addition to the composite Higgs, HC baryons emerge to potentially be stable because of the unbroken HC b…
The nature of dark matter (DM) and how it might interact with the particles of the Standard Model (SM) is an ever-growing mystery. It is possible that the existence of new `dark sector' forces, yet undiscovered, are the key to solving this fundamental problem. In this paper, we construct a model in which a dark photon mediates interactions with the SM via kinetic mixing. Unlike traditional models, in which the dark photon, which couples to a dark charge, $Q_D$, mixes with the hypercharge boson, our model effectively mixes the dark photon directly with the photon after electroweak symmetry is b…
We study a gauge-singlet vector-like fermion hidden-sector dark matter model, in which the communication between the dark matter and the visible standard model sector is via the Higgs-portal scalar-Higgs mixing, and also via a hidden-sector scalar with loop-level couplings to two gluons and also to two hypercharge gauge bosons induced by a vector-like quark. We find that the Higgs-portal possibility is stringently constrained to be small by the recent LHC di-Higgs search limits, and the loop-induced couplings are important to include. In the model parameter space, we present the dark matter re…
We propose a simple non-supersymmetric grand unified theory (GUT) based on the gauge group $SO(10) \times U(1)_ψ$. The model includes 3 generations of fermions in ${\bf 16}$ ($+1$), ${\bf 10}$ ($-2$) and ${\bf 1}$ ($+4$) representations. The ${\bf 16}$-plets contain Standard Model (SM) fermions plus right-handed neutrinos, and the ${\bf 10}$-plet and the singlet fermions are introduced to make the model anomaly-free. Gauge coupling unification at $M_{GUT} \simeq 5 \times 10^{15}-10^{16}$ GeV is achieved by including an intermediate Pati-Salam breaking at $M_{I} \simeq 10^{12}-10^{11}$ GeV, whi…
We revisit the theory and phenomenology of scalar electroweak multiplet thermal dark matter. We derive the most general, renormalizable scalar potential, assuming the presence of the Standard Model Higgs doublet, $H$, and an electroweak multiplet $Φ$ of arbitrary SU(2$)_L$ rank and hypercharge, $Y$. We show that, in general, the $Φ$-$H$ Higgs portal interactions depend on three, rather than two independent couplings as has been previously considered in the literature. For the phenomenologically viable case of $Y=0$ multiplets, we focus on the septuplet and quintuplet cases, and consider the in…
We investigate the potential reach of a search for a long-lived/prompt dark vector boson $Z_D$, also called dark $Z$, and a prompt dark Higgs boson $h_D$ through exotic decays of the observed Higgs boson $h$ into either $Z_DZ_D$, $h_Dh_D$, or $ZZ_D$ with $Z$ being the hypercharge gauge boson. The $Z_D$ production through the Higgs portal is completed via one of two mechanisms, kinetic mixing of $Z_D$ with $Z$ and the mixing of $h_D$ with $h$. All production modes of $h$ are considered, while the branching fractions are calculated in Monte Carlo simulation using the {\textsc{MadGraph5}}\_aMC@NL…
The kinetic mixing (KM) portal is a popular mechanism which allows light dark matter (DM) in the mass range below $\sim 1$ GeV to achieve the observed relic density by thermal means and can be effectively described by only a few parameters, e.g., $ε$, the strength of this KM. In the simplest setup, the Standard Model (SM) $U(1)_Y$ hypercharge gauge boson and a $U(1)_D$ dark photon (DP), which only couples to fields in the dark sector, experience KM via loops of portal matter (PM) fields which have both SM and dark charges thus generating a small coupling between us and dark matter (DM). Howeve…
