We present an analysis of the origin and properties of the circum-galactic medium (CGM) in a suite of 11 cosmological zoom simulations resembling present day spiral galaxies. On average the galaxies retain about 50\% of the cosmic fraction in baryons, almost equally divided into disc (interstellar medium) gas, cool CGM gas and warm-hot CGM gas. At radii smaller than 50 kpc the CGM is dominated by recycled warm-hot gas injected from the central galaxy, while at larger radii it is dominated by cool gas accreted onto the halo. The recycled gas typically accounts for one-third of the CGM mass. We introduce the novel publicly available analysis tool \textsc{pygad} to compute ion abundances and mock absorption spectra. For Lyman-$α$ absorption we find good agreement of the simulated equivalent width (EW) distribution and observations out to large radii. Disc galaxies with quiescent assembly histories show significantly more absorption along the disc major axis. By comparing the EW and HI column densities we find that CGM Lyman-$α$ absorbers are best represented by an effective line-width $b\approx 50 - 70$ km s$^{-1}$ that increases mildly with halo mass, larger than typically assumed.
In this work, we propose an improved approach to reconstruct the three-dimensional intergalactic medium from observed Lyman-$α$ forest absorption features. We present our new method, the Optimized Reconstruction with Constraints on Absorption (ORCA), which outperforms the current baseline Wiener Filter (WF) when tested on mock Lyman Alpha forest data generated from hydrodynamical simulations. We find that both reconstructed flux errors and cosmic web classification improve substantially with ORCA, equivalent to 30-40\% additional sight-lines with the standard WF. We use this method to identify…
The processes allowing the escape of ionizing photons from galaxies into the intergalactic medium are poorly known. To understand how Lyman continuum (LyC) photons escape galaxies, we constrain the HI covering fractions and column densities using ultraviolet HI and metal absorption lines of 18 star-forming galaxies which have Lyman series observations. Nine of these galaxies are confirmed LyC emitters. We fit the stellar continuum, dust attenuation, metal, and HI properties to consistently determine the UV attenuation, as well as the column densities and covering factors of neutral hydrogen an…
Interaction of spiral density waves with stars in the vicinity of the inner Lindblad resonance in galactic discs is investigated using the linear perturbation theory and the leading orders in the epicyclic and WKB approximations. In analogy with shear flows in hydrodynamics, we conjecture that a weak nonlinearity in a narrow resonance region modifies the standard (Landau-Lin) bypass rule of the singularity to the integration in the principal value sense. This indeed leads to the reflection of the spiral wave instead of absorption, but the detailed picture looks awkward: the intervals of the wa…
Using the Low Dispersion Survey Spectrograph 3 at the Magellan II Clay Telescope, we target {candidate absorption host galaxies} detected in deep optical imaging {(reaching limiting apparent magnitudes of 23.0-26.5 in $g, r, i,$ and $z$ filters) in the fields of three QSOs, each of which shows the presence of high metallicity, high $N_{\rm HI}$ absorption systems in their spectra (Q0826-2230: $z_{abs}$=0.9110, Q1323-0021: $z_{abs}=0.7160$, Q1436-0051: $z_{abs}=0.7377, 0.9281$). We confirm three host galaxies {at redshifts 0.7387, 0.7401, and 0.9286} for two of the Lyman-$α$ absorption systems …
We examine the absorption line spectra of a sample of 31 luminous (M_UV=-23) Lyman break galaxies at redshift z~6 using data taken with the FOCAS and OSIRIS spectrographs on the Subaru and GTC telescopes. For two of these sources we present longer exposure data taken at higher spectral resolution from ESO's X-shooter spectrograph. Using these data, we demonstrate the practicality of stacking our lower resolution data to measure the depth of various interstellar and stellar absorption lines to probe the covering fraction of low ionization gas and the gas-phase and stellar metallicities near the…

The flow of baryons to and from a galaxy, which is fundamental for galaxy formation and evolution, can be studied with galaxy-metal absorption system pairs. Our search for galaxies around CIV absorption systems at $z\sim5.7$ showed an excess of photometric Lyman-$α$ emitter (LAE) candidates in the fields J1030+0524 and J1137+3549. Here we present spectroscopic follow-up of 33 LAEs in both fields. In the first field, three out of the five LAEs within 10$h^{{-}1}$ projected comoving Mpc from the CIV system are within $\pm500$ km s$^{{-}1}$ from the absorption at $z_{\text{CIV}}=5.7242\pm0.0001$.…
Motivated by the discovery of the ultra-strong emission line starburst galaxies (EELGs) known as "green pea galaxies", we consider here their contribution to the intergalactic flux of ionizing UV at high redshifts. Most galaxies that have been observed show a precipitous drop in their flux blueward of the Lyman limit. However, recent observations of EELGs have discovered that many more Lyman continuum photons escape from them into intergalactic space than was previously suspected. We calculate their contribution to the extragalactic background light (EBL). We also calculate the effect of these…
We investigate the absorption features associated with a gas-rich dwarf galaxy using cosmological hydrodynamics simulations. Our goal is to explore whether the progenitors of the lowest mass dwarf galaxies known to harbor neutral hydrogen today (M_star~10^6 solar mass, M_halo=4x10^9 solar mass) could possibly be detected as Damped Lyman-alpha Absorbers (DLAs) over cosmic time. We trace the evolution of a single dwarf galaxy, pre-selected to contain DLAs, from the era of the first metal-free, so-called Population~III (Pop~III), stars, down to z=0, thus allowing us to study the metal enrichment …
The z=8 galaxy sample (EGSY-2008532660, EGS-zs8-1, EGS-zs8-2), observed with HST and Spitzer/IRAC, was selected for its atypical [3.6]-[4.5]mum IR excess. The best-fitting of observations is processed with multiple libraries of continuous UV-to-farIR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with the help of the code Pegase.3 with dust (Fioc and Rocca-Volmerange, 2018, submitted to AA). The main results are: i) the IR excess is due to the Balmer break of red giant stars with galaxy ages of 450-500 Myrs ii) masses are high: 7 10^10 Msun for stellar mass, 10^11 Msun for galaxy mass, 3 10^8 Msun for d…
We present an absorption-line survey of optically thick gas clouds -- Lyman Limit Systems (LLSs) -- observed at high dispersion with spectrometers on the Keck and Magellan telescopes. We measure column densities of neutral hydrogen NHI and associated metal-line transitions for 157 LLSs at z=1.76-4.39 restricted to 10^17.3 < NHI < 10^20.3. An empirical analysis of ionic ratios indicates an increasing ionization state of the gas with decreasing NHI and that the majority of LLSs are highly ionized, confirming previous expectations. The Si^+/H^0 ratio spans nearly four orders-of-magnitude, implyin…
We present a comprehensive analysis of the spin temperature/covering factor degeneracy, T/f, in damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems. By normalising the upper limits and including these via a survival analysis, there is, as previously claimed, an apparent increase in T/f with redshift at z > 1. However, when we account for the geometry effects of an expanding Universe, neglected by the previous studies, this increase in T/f at z > 1 is preceded by a decrease at z < 1. Using high resolution radio images of the background continuum sources, we can transform the T/f degeneracy to T/d^2, where d …
Lyman-$α$ (Ly$α$) spectra provide insights into the small-scale structure and kinematics of neutral hydrogen (HI) within galaxies as well as the ionization state of the intergalactic medium (IGM). The former defines the intrinsic spectrum of a galaxy, which is modified by the latter. These two effects are degenerate. Using the IllustrisTNG100 simulation, we study the impact of the IGM on Ly$α$ spectral shapes between $z\sim 0$ and $5$. We compute the distribution of the expected Ly$α$ peaks and of the peak asymmetry for different intrinsic spectra, redshifts and large-scale environments. We fi…
We reanalyze Fermi/LAT gamma-ray spectra of bright blazars with a higher photon statistics than in previous works and with new Pass 7 data representation. In the spectra of the brightest blazar 3C 454.3 and possibly of 4C +21.35 we detect breaks at 5 GeV (in the rest frame) associated with the photon-photon pair production absorption by He II Lyman continuum (LyC). We also detect confident breaks at 20 GeV associated with hydrogen LyC both in the individual spectra and in the stacked redshift-corrected spectrum of several bright blazars. The detected breaks in the stacked spectra univocally pr…
Galaxy formation depends critically on the physical state of gas in the circumgalactic medium (CGM) and its interface with the intergalactic medium (IGM), determined by the complex interplay between inflows from the IGM and outflows from supernovae or AGN feedback. The average Lyman-alpha (Ly-a) absorption profile around galactic halos represents a powerful tool to probe their gaseous environments. We compare predictions from Illustris and Nyx hydrodynamical simulations with the observed absorption around foreground quasars, damped Ly-a systems, and Lyman-break galaxies. We show how large-scal…
Faint star-forming galaxies at $z\sim 2-3$ can be used as alternative background sources to probe the Lyman-$α$ forest in addition to quasars, yielding high sightline densities that enable 3D tomographic reconstruction of the foreground absorption field. Here, we present the first data release from the COSMOS Lyman-Alpha Mapping And Mapping Observations (CLAMATO) Survey, which was conducted with the LRIS spectrograph on the Keck-I telescope. Over an observational footprint of 0.157$\mathrm{deg}^2$ within the COSMOS field, we used 240 galaxies and quasars at $2.17<z<3.00$, with a mean comoving …
The XQ-100 survey provides optical and near infrared coverage of 36 blindly selected, intervening damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) at 2 < z < 4, simultaneously covering the MgII doublet at 2796A, 2803A, and the Ly-alpha transition. Using the XQ-100 DLA sample, we investigate the completeness of selecting DLA absorbers based on their MgII rest-frame equivalent width (W2796) at these redshifts. Of the 29 DLAs with clean MgII profiles, we find that six (20% of DLAs) have W2796 < 0.6A. The DLA incidence rate of W2796 < 0.6A absorbers is a factor of ~5 higher than what is seen in z~1 samples, indi…
