The (pseudo-)spin degrees of freedom greatly enriches the physics of cold atoms. This is particularly so for systems with high spins (i.e., spin quantum number larger than 1/2). For example, one can construct not only the rank-1 spin vector, but also the rank-2 spin tensor in high spin systems. Here we propose a simple scheme to couple the spin tensor and the center-of-mass orbital angular momentum in a spin-1 cold atom system, and show that this leads to a new quantum phase of the matter: the spin-nematic vortex state that features vorticity in an SU(2) spin-nematic tensor subspace. Under proper conditions, such states are characterized by quantized topological numbers. Our work opens up new avenues of research in topological quantum matter with high spins.
A spin-1 condensate with antiferromagnetic interactions supports nematic spin vortices in the easy-plane polar phase. These vortices have a $2π$ winding of the nematic director, with a core structure that depends on the quadratic Zeeman energy. We characterize the properties of the nematic spin vortex in a uniform quasi-two-dimensional system. We also obtain the vortex excitation spectrum and use it to quantify its stability against dissociating into two half-quantum vortices, finding a parameter regime where the nematic spin vortex is dynamically stable. These results are supported by full dy…
We find a novel topological defect in a spin-nematic superfluid theoretically. A quantized vortex spontaneously breaks its axisymmetry, leading to an elliptic vortex in nematic-spin Bose-Einstein condensates with small positive quadratic Zeeman effect. The new vortex is considered the Joukowski transform of a conventional vortex. Its oblateness grows when the Zeeman length exceeds the spin healing length. This structure is sustained by balancing the hydrodynamic potential and the elasticity of a soliton connecting two spin spots, which are observable by in situ magnetization imaging. The theor…
We calculate the energetic structure of defect cores and propose controlled methods to imprint a nontrivially entangled vortex pair that undergoes non-Abelian vortex reconnection in a biaxial nematic spin-2 condensate. For a singular vortex, we find three superfluid cores in addition to depletion of the condensate density. These exhibit order parameter symmetries that are different from the discrete symmetry of the biaxial nematic phase, forming an interface between the defect and the bulk superfluid. We provide a detailed analysis of phase mixing in the resulting vortex cores and find an inst…
The stability conditions for the singular vortex which accompanies Majorana zero modes at the core are investigated for p-wave resonant superfluids of atomic Fermi gases. Within the Ginzburg-Landau framework we determine the stable conditions in the parameter space for the external rotation frequency and the harmonic trap frequency. There exists the narrow stable region in this parameter space for quasi-two-dimensional condensates. We also describe the detailed characterizations of the spatial structure of the order parameter in the chiral p-wave superfluids under rotation.
Reconnections and interactions of filamentary coherent structures play a fundamental role in the dynamics of fluids, plasmas and nematic liquid crystals. In fluids, vortex reconnections redistribute energy and helicity among the length scales and induce fine-scale turbulent mixing. Unlike ordinary fluids where vorticity is a continuous field, in quantum fluids vorticity is concentrated into discrete (quantized) vortex lines turning vortex reconnections into isolated events, making it conceptually easier to study. Here we report experimental and numerical observations of three-dimensional quant…
We derived the low energy effective action for the collective modes in asymmetric fermionic systems with attractive interaction. We obtained the phase diagram in terms of the chemical potentials. It features a stable gapless superfluidity with one Fermi surface on the BEC side of the resonance. Also we predict a sharp increase in outer core of a vortex, i.e. vortex size, upon entering into the gapless phase. This may serve as a signature of a gapless phase.
We point out that the internal spin symmetry of the order parameter manifests itself at the core of a fractional vortex in real space without spin-orbit coupling. Such symmetry breaking arises from a topological constraint and the commensurability between spin symmetries of the order parameters inside and outside the core. Our prediction can be applied to probe the cyclic order parameter in a rotating spin-2 $^{87}$Rb condensate as a non-circular vortex core in a biaxial nematic state.
We simulate the decay dynamics of an isolated monopole defect in the nematic vector of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate during the polar-to-ferromagnetic phase transition of the system. Importantly, the decay of the monopole occurs in the absence of external magnetic fields and is driven principally by the dynamical instability due to the ferromagnetic spin-exchange interactions. An initial isolated monopole is observed to relax into a polar-core spin vortex, thus demonstrating the spontaneous transformation of a point defect of the polar order parameter manifold to a line defect of the ferro…
We study theoretically the ground states of topological defects in a spinor four-component condensate of cold indirect excitons. We analyze possible ground state solutions for different configurations of vortices and half-vortices. We show that if only Rashba or Dreselhaus spin-orbit interaction (SOI) for electrons is present the stable states of topological defects can represent a cylindrically symmetric half-vortex or half vortex-antivortex pairs, or a non-trivial pattern with warped vortices. In the presence of both of Rashba and Dresselhaus SOI the ground state of a condensate represents a…
We consider the influence of optical and temperature-dependent atomic fluctuations on the formation and propagation of optical vortex solitons in dense media realized as hollow-core optical fibers filled with a cold atomic gas in presence of optical pumping. We show different perturbation-induced scenaria of complete destruction and smooth transformations of the topological characteristics of localized optical structures in hollow-core fiber. The maximum levels of optical and atomic fluctuations at which the soliton regime can be maintained has been determined. The estimates for these levels s…
We theoretically study an ultra-cold gas of spin-1 polar bosons in a one dimensional continuum which are subject to linear and quadratic Zeeman fields and a Raman induced spin-orbit coupling. Concentrating on the regime in which the background fields can be treated perturbatively we analytically solve the model in its low-energy sector, i.e. we characterize the relevant phases and the quantum phase transitions between them. Depending on the sign of the effective quadratic Zeeman field $ε$, two superfluid phases with distinct nematic order appear. In addition, we uncover a spin-disordered super…
We show that conservation of longitudinal magnetization in a spinor condensate provides a stabilizing mechanism for a coreless vortex phase-imprinted on a polar condensate. The stable vortex can form a composite topological defect with distinct small- and large-distance topology: the inner ferromagnetic coreless vortex continuously deforms toward an outer singular, singly quantized polar vortex. A similar mechanism can also stabilize a nonsingular nematic texture in the polar phase. A weak magnetization is shown to destabilize a coreless vortex in the ferromagnetic phase.
Cold gas experiments can be tuned to achieve strongly-interacting regimes such as that of low-density neutron matter found in neutron-stars' crusts. We report $T$=0 diffusion Monte Carlo results (i) for the ground state of both spin-1/2 fermions with short-range interactions and low-density neutron matter in a cylindrical container, and (ii) properties of these systems with a vortex line excitation. We calculate the equation of state for cold atoms and low-density neutron matter in the bulk systems, and we contrast it to our results in the cylindrical container. We compute the vortex line exci…
As in between liquid and crystal phases lies a nematic liquid crystal, which breaks rotation with preservation of translation symmetry, there is a nematic superfluid phase bridging a superfluid and a supersolid. The nematic order also emerges in interacting electrons and has been found to largely intertwine with multi-orbital correlation in high-temperature superconductivity, where Ising nematicity arises from a four-fold rotation symmetry $C_4$ broken down to $C_2$. Here we report an observation of a three-state ($\mathbb{Z}_3$) quantum nematic order, dubbed "Potts-nematicity", in a system of…
Vortex arrays in type-II superconductors admit the translational symmetry of an infinite system. There are cases, however, like ultra-cold trapped Fermi gases and the crust of neutron stars, where finite-size effects make it quite more complex to account for the geometrical arrangement of vortices. Here, we self-consistently generate these arrays of vortices at zero and finite temperature through a microscopic description of the non-homogeneous superfluid based on a differential equation for the local order parameter, obtained by coarse graining the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations. In thi…
Effective spin-orbit coupling can be created in cold atom systems using atom-light interaction. We study the BECs in an optical lattice using the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with spin-orbit coupling. Bloch states for the linear equation are numerically obtained, and compared with stationary solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with nonlinear terms. Various vortex lattice states are found when the spin-orbit coupling is strong.
We investigate cold bosonic impurity atoms trapped in a vortex lattice formed by condensed bosons of another species. We describe the dynamics of the impurities by a bosonic Hubbard model containing occupation-dependent parameters to capture the effects of strong impurity-impurity interactions. These include both a repulsive direct interaction and an attractive effective interaction mediated by the BEC. The occupation dependence of these two competing interactions drastically affects the Hubbard model phase diagram, including causing the disappearance of some Mott lobes
The phase diagram of lowest-energy vortices in the polar phase of spin-1 Bose--Einstein condensates is investigated theoretically. Singly quantized vortices are categorized by the local ordered state in the vortex core and three types of vortices are found as lowest-energy vortices, which are elliptic AF-core vortices, axisymmetric F-core vortices, and N-core vortices. These vortices are named after the local ordered state, ferromagnetic (F), antiferromagnetic (AF), broken-axisymmetry (BA), and normal (N) states apart from the bulk polar (P) state. The N-core vortex is a conventional vortex, i…
Extended Bose Hubbard models with nearest neighbour interaction describe minimally the effect of long range interaction on ultra cold atoms in deep optical lattices. Rotation of such optical lattices subject such neutral cold atoms to the effect of an artificial magnetic field. The modification of the phase boundaries of the density wave and Mott Insulator phases due to this rotation are shown to be related to the edge spectrum of spinorial and scalar Harper equation. Corresponding profiles of the checkerboard vortex states with sublattice modulated superfluid order parameter near density wave…
We propose a nonlinear atom-optics experiment to create diffraction catastrophes threaded by quantized vortex skeletons in Bose-Einstein condensed matter waves. We show how atom-optical aberrations induced in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates evolve into specific caustic structures due to imperfect focusing. Vortex skeletons, whose cross-sections are staggered vortex lattices, are observed to nucleate inside the universal diffraction catastrophes. Our observations shed further light on the structure and dynamics of Bose-novae and suggest applications of matter wave diffraction catastrophes, in…
Majorana zero bound mode exists in the vortex core of a chiral $p+ip$ superconductor or superfluid, which can be driven from an s-wave pairing state by two-dimensional (2D) spin-orbit (SO) coupling. We propose here a novel scheme based on realistic cold atom platforms to generate 2D SO interactions in a blue-detuned square optical lattice, and predict both the quantum anomalous Hall effect and chiral topological superfluid phase in the experimentally accessible parameter regimes. This work opens a new direction with experimental feasibility to observe non-Abelian topological orders in cold ato…
The leapfrogging of coaxial vortex rings is a famous effect which has been noticed since the times of Helmholtz. Recent advances in ultra-cold atomic gases show that the effect can now be studied in quantum fluids. The strong confinement which characterizes these systems motivates the study of leapfrogging of vortices within narrow channels. Using the two-dimensional point vortex model, we show that in the constrained geometry of a two-dimensional channel the dynamics is richer than in an unbounded domain: alongsize the known regimes of standard leapfrogging and the absence of it, we identify …
Atoms in high-finesse optical resonators interact via the photons they multiply scatter into the cavity modes. The dynamics is characterized by dispersive and dissipative optomechanical long-range forces, which are mediated by the cavity photons, and exhibits a steady state for certain parameter regimes. In standing-wave cavities the atoms can form stable spatial gratings. Moreover, their asymptotic distribution is a Maxwell-Boltzmann whose effective temperature is controlled by the laser parameters. In this work we show that in a two-mode standing-wave cavity the stationary state possesses th…
We show that the dynamics of cold bosonic atoms in a two-dimensional square optical lattice produced by a bichromatic light-shift potential is described by a Bose-Hubbard model with an additional effective staggered magnetic field. In addition to the known uniform superfluid and Mott insulating phases, the zero-temperature phase diagram exhibits a novel kind of finite-momentum superfluid phase, characterized by a quantized staggered rotational flux. An extension for fermionic atoms leads to an anisotropic Dirac spectrum, which is relevant to graphene and high-$T_c$ superconductors.
We propose to test the concept of seeded vacuum decay in cosmology using an analogue gravity Bose-Einstein condensate system. The role of the nucleation seed is played by a vortex within the condensate. We present two complementary theoretical analyses that demonstrate seeded decay is the dominant decay mechanism of the false vacuum. First, we adapt the standard instanton methods to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Second, we use the truncated Wigner method to study vacuum decay.
The static properties, i.e., existence and stability, as well as the quench-induced dynamics of vortex-bright type excitations in two-dimensional harmonically confined spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates are investigated. Linearly stable vortex-bright-vortex and bright-vortex-bright solutions arise in both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic spinor gases upon quadratic Zeeman energy shift variations. Their deformations across the relevant transitions are exposed and discussed in detail evincing also that emergent instabilities can lead to pattern formation. Spatial elongations, precessional motio…
(Abridged) Extensions of the standard model of particle physics predict very light bosons, ranging from about 10^{-5} eV for the QCD axion to 10^{-33} eV for ultra-light particles, which could be the cold dark matter (CDM) in the Universe. If so, their phase-space density must be high enough to form a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). The fluid-like nature of BEC-CDM dynamics differs from that of standard collisionless CDM (sCDM), so observations of galactic haloes may distinguish them. sCDM has problems with galaxy observations on small scales, which BEC-CDM may overcome for a large range of pa…
A Bose-Einstein condensate of cold atoms is a superfluid and thus responds to rotation of its container by the nucleation of quantized vortices. If the trapping potential is su ciently strong, there is no theoretical limit to the rotation frequency one can impose to the fluid, and several phase transitions characterized by the number and distribution of vortices occur when it is increased from zero to infinity. In this note we focus on a regime of very large rotation velocity where vortices disappear from the bulk of the fluid, gathering in a central hole of low matter density induced by the c…
Magneto-transport of hard core bosons (HCB) is studied using an XXZ quantum spin model representation, appropriately gauged on the torus to allow for an external magnetic field. We find strong lattice effects near half filling. An effective quantum mechanical description of the vortex degrees of freedom is derived. Using semiclassical and numerical analysis we compute the vortex hopping energy, which at half filling is close to magnitude of the boson hopping energy. The critical quantum melting density of the vortex lattice is estimated at 6.5x10-5 vortices per unit cell. The Hall conductance …
We study pinning and unpinning of superfluid vortices in the inner crust of a neutron star using 3-dimensional dynamical simulations. Strong pinning occurs for certain lattice orientations of an idealized, body-centered cubic lattice, and occurs generally in an amorphous or impure nuclear lattice. The pinning force per unit length is $\sim 10^{16}$ dyn cm$^{-1}$ for a vortex-nucleus interaction that is repulsive, and $\sim 10^{17}$ dyn cm$^{-1}$ for an attractive interaction. The pinning force is strong enough to account for observed spin jumps (glitches). Vortices forced through the lattice m…
