Target speech separation refers to isolating target speech from a multi-speaker mixture signal by conditioning on auxiliary information about the target speaker. Different from the mainstream audio-visual approaches which usually require simultaneous visual streams as additional input, e.g. the corresponding lip movement sequences, in our approach we propose the novel use of a single face profile of the target speaker to separate expected clean speech. We exploit the fact that the image of a face contains information about the person's speech sound. Compared to using a simultaneous visual sequence, a face image is easier to obtain by pre-enrollment or on websites, which enables the system to generalize to devices without cameras. To this end, we incorporate face embeddings extracted from a pretrained model for face recognition into the speech separation, which guide the system in predicting a target speaker mask in the time-frequency domain. The experimental results show that a pre-enrolled face image is able to benefit separating expected speech signals. Additionally, face information is complementary to voice reference and we show that further improvement can be achieved when combing both face and voice embeddings.

In this paper, we propose VoiceID loss, a novel loss function for training a speech enhancement model to improve the robustness of speaker verification. In contrast to the commonly used loss functions for speech enhancement such as the L2 loss, the VoiceID loss is based on the feedback from a speaker verification model to generate a ratio mask. The generated ratio mask is multiplied pointwise with the original spectrogram to filter out unnecessary components for speaker verification. In the experiments, we observed that the enhancement network, after training with the VoiceID loss, is able to …

We propose a neural text-to-speech (TTS) model that can imitate a new speaker's voice using only a small amount of speech sample. We demonstrate voice imitation using only a 6-seconds long speech sample without any other information such as transcripts. Our model also enables voice imitation instantly without additional training of the model. We implemented the voice imitating TTS model by combining a speaker embedder network with a state-of-the-art TTS model, Tacotron. The speaker embedder network takes a new speaker's speech sample and returns a speaker embedding. The speaker embedding with …

In most of practical scenarios, the announcement system must deliver speech messages in a noisy environment, in which the background noise cannot be cancelled out. The local noise reduces speech intelligibility and increases listening effort of the listener, hence hamper the effectiveness of announcement system. There has been reported that voices of professional announcers are clearer and more comprehensive than that of non-expert speakers in noisy environment. This finding suggests that the speech intelligibility might be related to the speaking style of professional announcer, which can be …

The goal of voice conversion is to transform source speech into a target voice, keeping the content unchanged. In this paper, we focus on self-supervised representation learning for voice conversion. Specifically, we compare discrete and soft speech units as input features. We find that discrete representations effectively remove speaker information but discard some linguistic content - leading to mispronunciations. As a solution, we propose soft speech units. To learn soft units, we predict a distribution over discrete speech units. By modeling uncertainty, soft units capture more content inf…

This paper presents a novel framework to build a voice conversion (VC) system by learning from a text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis system, that is called TTS-VC transfer learning. We first develop a multi-speaker speech synthesis system with sequence-to-sequence encoder-decoder architecture, where the encoder extracts robust linguistic representations of text, and the decoder, conditioned on target speaker embedding, takes the context vectors and the attention recurrent network cell output to generate target acoustic features. We take advantage of the fact that TTS system maps input text to speak…

Text-to-Speech (TTS) synthesis plays an important role in human-computer interaction. Currently, most TTS technologies focus on the naturalness of speech, namely, making the speeches sound like humans. However, the key tasks of the expression of emotion and the speaker identity are ignored, which limits the application scenarios of TTS synthesis technology. To make the synthesized speech more realistic and expand the application scenarios, we propose a multi-task anthropomorphic speech synthesis framework (MASS), which can synthesize speeches from text with specified emotion and speaker identit…
This paper introduces the Voices Obscured In Complex Environmental Settings (VOICES) corpus, a freely available dataset under Creative Commons BY 4.0. This dataset will promote speech and signal processing research of speech recorded by far-field microphones in noisy room conditions. Publicly available speech corpora are mostly composed of isolated speech at close-range microphony. A typical approach to better represent realistic scenarios, is to convolve clean speech with noise and simulated room response for model training. Despite these efforts, model performance degrades when tested agains…

In this paper we propose a new cross-lingual Voice Conversion (VC) approach which can generate all speech parameters (MCEP, LF0, BAP) from one DNN model using PPGs (Phonetic PosteriorGrams) extracted from inputted speech using several ASR acoustic models. Using the proposed VC method, we tried three different approaches to build a multilingual TTS system without recording a multilingual speech corpus. A listening test was carried out to evaluate both speech quality (naturalness) and voice similarity between converted speech and target speech. The results show that Approach 1 achieved the highe…

In smoking cessation clinical research and practice, objective validation of self-reported smoking status is crucial for ensuring the reliability of the primary outcome, that is, smoking abstinence. Speech signals convey important information about a speaker, such as age, gender, body size, emotional state, and health state. We investigated (1) if smoking could measurably alter voice features, (2) if smoking cessation could lead to changes in voice, and therefore (3) if the voice-based smoking status assessment has the potential to be used as an objective smoking cessation validation method.
Thanks to improvements in machine learning techniques, including deep learning, speech synthesis is becoming a machine learning task. To accelerate speech synthesis research, we are developing Japanese voice corpora reasonably accessible from not only academic institutions but also commercial companies. In 2017, we released the JSUT corpus, which contains 10 hours of reading-style speech uttered by a single speaker, for end-to-end text-to-speech synthesis. For more general use in speech synthesis research, e.g., voice conversion and multi-speaker modeling, in this paper, we construct the JVS c…
Singing voice conversion is converting the timbre in the source singing to the target speaker's voice while keeping singing content the same. However, singing data for target speaker is much more difficult to collect compared with normal speech data.In this paper, we introduce a singing voice conversion algorithm that is capable of generating high quality target speaker's singing using only his/her normal speech data. First, we manage to integrate the training and conversion process of speech and singing into one framework by unifying the features used in standard speech synthesis system and s…

Voice cloning technologies have found applications in a variety of areas ranging from personalized speech interfaces to advertisement, robotics, and so on. Existing voice cloning systems are capable of learning speaker characteristics and use trained models to synthesize a person's voice from only a few audio samples. Advances in cloned speech generation technologies are capable of generating perceptually indistinguishable speech from a bona-fide speech. These advances pose new security and privacy threats to voice-driven interfaces and speech-based access control systems. The state-of-the-art…

Non-parallel many-to-many voice conversion is recently attract-ing huge research efforts in the speech processing community. A voice conversion system transforms an utterance of a source speaker to another utterance of a target speaker by keeping the content in the original utterance and replacing by the vocal features from the target speaker. Existing solutions, e.g., StarGAN-VC2, present promising results, only when speech corpus of the engaged speakers is available during model training. AUTOVCis able to perform voice conversion on unseen speakers, but it needs an external pretrained speake…

Most methods of voice restoration for patients suffering from aphonia either produce whispered or monotone speech. Apart from intelligibility, this type of speech lacks expressiveness and naturalness due to the absence of pitch (whispered speech) or artificial generation of it (monotone speech). Existing techniques to restore prosodic information typically combine a vocoder, which parameterises the speech signal, with machine learning techniques that predict prosodic information. In contrast, this paper describes an end-to-end neural approach for estimating a fully-voiced speech waveform from …

This Ph.D. thesis focuses on developing a system for high-quality speech synthesis and voice conversion. Vocoder-based speech analysis, manipulation, and synthesis plays a crucial role in various kinds of statistical parametric speech research. Although there are vocoding methods which yield close to natural synthesized speech, they are typically computationally expensive, and are thus not suitable for real-time implementation, especially in embedded environments. Therefore, there is a need for simple and computationally feasible digital signal processing algorithms for generating high-quality…

In this paper, we integrate a simple non-parallel voice conversion (VC) system with a WaveNet (WN) vocoder and a proposed collapsed speech suppression technique. The effectiveness of WN as a vocoder for generating high-fidelity speech waveforms on the basis of acoustic features has been confirmed in recent works. However, when combining the WN vocoder with a VC system, the distorted acoustic features, acoustic and temporal mismatches, and exposure bias usually lead to significant speech quality degradation, making WN generate some very noisy speech segments called collapsed speech. To tackle t…

This paper introduces voice reenactement as the task of voice conversion (VC) in which the expressivity of the source speaker is preserved during conversion while the identity of a target speaker is transferred. To do so, an original neural- VC architecture is proposed based on sequence-to-sequence voice conversion (S2S-VC) in which the speech prosody of the source speaker is preserved during conversion. First, the S2S-VC architecture is modified so as to synchronize the converted speech with the source speech by mean of phonetic duration encoding; second, the decoder is conditioned on the des…

Voice Conversion(VC) refers to changing the timbre of a speech while retaining the discourse content. Recently, many works have focused on disentangle-based learning techniques to separate the timbre and the linguistic content information from a speech signal. Once successful, voice conversion will be feasible and straightforward. This paper proposed a novel one-shot voice conversion framework based on vector quantization voice conversion (VQVC) and AutoVC, called AVQVC. A new training method is applied to VQVC to separate content and timbre information from speech more effectively. The result…

With the development of smart devices, such as the Amazon Echo and Apple's HomePod, speech data have become a new dimension of big data. However, privacy and security concerns may hinder the collection and sharing of real-world speech data, which contain the speaker's identifiable information, i.e., voiceprint, which is considered a type of biometric identifier. Current studies on voiceprint privacy protection do not provide either a meaningful privacy-utility trade-off or a formal and rigorous definition of privacy. In this study, we design a novel and rigorous privacy metric for voiceprint p…

We propose an unsupervised learning method to disentangle speech into content representation and speaker identity representation. We apply this method to the challenging one-shot cross-lingual voice conversion task to demonstrate the effectiveness of the disentanglement. Inspired by $β$-VAE, we introduce a learning objective that balances between the information captured by the content and speaker representations. In addition, the inductive biases from the architectural design and the training dataset further encourage the desired disentanglement. Both objective and subjective evaluations show…

Numerous voice conversion (VC) techniques have been proposed for the conversion of voices among different speakers. Although good quality of the converted speech can be observed when VC is applied in a clean environment, the quality degrades drastically when the system is run in noisy conditions. In order to address this issue, we propose a novel speech enhancement (SE)-assisted VC system that utilizes the SE techniques for signal pre-processing, where the VC and SE components are optimized in an joint training strategy with the aim to provide high-quality converted speech signals. Voice Activity Detection (VAD) is a fundamental preprocessing step in automatic speech recognition. This is especially true within the broadcast industry where a wide variety of audio materials and recording conditions are encountered. Based on previous studies which indicate that xvector embeddings can be applied to a diverse set of audio classification tasks, we investigate the suitability of x-vectors in discriminating speech from noise. We find that the proposed x-vector based VAD system achieves the best reported score in detecting clean speech on AVA-Speech, whilst retaining robust VAD p…
Prosody modeling is important, but still challenging in expressive voice conversion. As prosody is difficult to model, and other factors, e.g., speaker, environment and content, which are entangled with prosody in speech, should be removed in prosody modeling. In this paper, we present IQDubbing to solve this problem for expressive voice conversion. To model prosody, we leverage the recent advances in discrete self-supervised speech representation (DSSR). Specifically, prosody vector is first extracted from pre-trained VQ-Wav2Vec model, where rich prosody information is embedded while most spe…
One-shot voice conversion (VC) aims to convert speech from any source speaker to an arbitrary target speaker with only a few seconds of reference speech from the target speaker. This relies heavily on disentangling the speaker's identity and speech content, a task that still remains challenging. Here, we propose a novel approach to learning disentangled speech representation by transfer learning from style-based text-to-speech (TTS) models. With cycle consistent and adversarial training, the style-based TTS models can perform transcription-guided one-shot VC with high fidelity and similarity. …

SpeechSplit can perform aspect-specific voice conversion by disentangling speech into content, rhythm, pitch, and timbre using multiple autoencoders in an unsupervised manner. However, SpeechSplit requires careful tuning of the autoencoder bottlenecks, which can be time-consuming and less robust. This paper proposes SpeechSplit 2.0, which constrains the information flow of the speech component to be disentangled on the autoencoder input using efficient signal processing methods instead of bottleneck tuning. Evaluation results show that SpeechSplit 2.0 achieves comparable performance to SpeechS…
