We develop a new finite difference scheme for the Maxwell-Stefan diffusion system. The scheme is conservative, energy stable and positivity-preserving. These nice properties stem from a variational structure and are proved by reformulating the finite difference scheme into an equivalent optimization problem. The solution to the scheme emerges as the minimizer of the optimization problem, and as a consequence energy stability and positivity-preserving properties are obtained.
The aim of this work is to propose a provably convergent finite volume scheme for the so-called Stefan-Maxwell model, which describes the evolution of the composition of a multi-component mixture and reads as a cross-diffusion system. The scheme proposed here relies on a two-point flux approximation, and preserves at the discrete level some fundamental theoretical properties of the continuous models, namely the non-negativity of the solutions, the conservation of mass and the preservation of the volume-filling constraints. In addition, the scheme satisfies a discrete entropy-entropy dissipatio…
We investigate structure-preserving finite element discretizations of the steady-state Stefan--Maxwell diffusion problem which governs diffusion within a phase consisting of multiple species. An approach inspired by augmented Lagrangian methods allows us to construct a symmetric positive definite augmented Onsager transport matrix, which in turn leads to an effective numerical algorithm. We prove inf-sup conditions for the continuous and discrete linearized systems and obtain error estimates for a phase consisting of an arbitrary number of species. The discretization preserves the thermodynami…
An implicit Euler finite-volume scheme for general cross-diffusion systems with volume-filling constraints is proposed and analyzed. The diffusion matrix may be nonsymmetric and not positive semidefinite, but the diffusion system is assumed to possess a formal gradient-flow structure that yields $L^\infty$ bounds on the continuous level. Examples include the Maxwell-Stefan systems for gas mixtures, tumor-growth models, and systems for the fabrication of thin-film solar cells. The proposed numerical scheme preserves the structure of the continuous equations, namely the entropy dissipation inequ…
We develop finite element methods for coupling the steady-state Onsager--Stefan--Maxwell equations to compressible Stokes flow. These equations describe multicomponent flow at low Reynolds number, where a mixture of different chemical species within a common thermodynamic phase is transported by convection and molecular diffusion. Developing a variational formulation for discretizing these equations is challenging: the formulation must balance physical relevance of the variables and boundary data, regularity assumptions, tractability of the analysis, enforcement of thermodynamic constraints, e…
We study the existence and properties of solutions and free boundaries of the one-phase Stefan problem with fractional diffusion posed in $\mathbb{R}^N$. In terms of the enthalpy $h(x,t)$, the evolution equation reads $\partial_t h+(-Δ)^sΦ(h) =0$, while the temperature is defined as $u:=Φ(h):=\max\{h-L,0\}$ for some constant $L>0$ called the latent heat, and $(-Δ)^s$ stands for the fractional Laplacian with exponent $s\in(0,1)$. We prove the existence of a continuous and bounded selfsimilar solution of the form $h(x,t)=H(x\,t^{-1/(2s)})$ which exhibits a free boundary at the change-of-phase le…
