We explore a few-body mixture of two bosonic species confined in quasi-one-dimensional parabolic traps of different length scales. The ground state phase diagrams in the three-dimensional parameter space spanned by the harmonic length scale ratio, inter-species coupling strength and particle number ratio are investigated. As a first case study we use the mean-field ansatz (MF) to perform a detailed analysis of the separation mechanism. It allows us to derive a simple and intuitive rule predicting which of the immiscible phases is energetically more favorable at the miscible-immiscible phase boundary. We estimate the critical coupling strength for the miscible-immiscible transition and perform a comparison to correlated many-body results obtained by means of the Multi-Layer Multi-Configuration Time Dependent Hartree method for bosonic mixtures (ML-X). At a critical ratio of the trap frequencies, determined solely by the particle number ratio, the deviations between MF and ML-X are very pronounced and can be attributed to a high degree of entanglement between the components. As a result, we evidence the breakdown of the effective one-body picture. Additionally, when many-body correlations play a substantial role, the one-body density is in general not sufficient for deciding upon the phase at hand which we demonstrate exemplarily.
We theoretically investigate strong-coupling properties of a Bose-Fermi mixture. In the mass- and population-balanced case, two of the authors have shown that a strong hetero-pairing interaction in this mixture brings about coupling phenomena between Fermi atomic excitations and Bose atomic and composite molecular excitations, that appear as an anomalous multiple peak structure in the single-particle spectral weight (SW). [D. Kharga, {\it et. al.}, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. {\bf 86}, 084301 (2017)]. In this paper, extending this previous work, we show that, although these many-body phenomena are sens…
We consider a homogeneous Bose-Fermi mixture, with the boson-fermion interaction tuned by a Fano-Feshbach resonance, in the presence of mass and density imbalance between the two species. By using many-body diagrammatic methods, we first study the finite-temperature phase diagram for the specific case of the mass-imbalanced mixture $^{87}$Rb $-^{40}$K for different values of the density imbalance. We then analyse the quantum phase transition associated with the disappearance at zero temperature of the boson condensate above a critical boson-fermion coupling. We find a pronounced dependence of …
We consider a two-leg Bose-Hubbard ladder in the presence of a magnetic flux. We make use of Gross-Pitaevskii, Bogoliubov, bosonization, and renormalization group approaches to reveal a structure of ground-state phase diagrams in a weak-coupling regime relevant to cold atom experiments. It is found that except for a certain flux $ϕ=π$, the system shows different properties as changing hoppings, which also leads to a quantum phase transition similar to the ferromagnetic XXZ model. This implies that population-imbalance instability occurs for certain parameter regimes. On the other hand, for $ϕ=…
By means of Quantum Monte Carlo methods we calculate the binding energy of an impurity immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate at T = 0. The focus is on the attractive branch of the Bose polaron and on the role played by the mass imbalance between the impurity and the surrounding particles. For an impurity resonantly coupled to the bath, we investigate the dependence of the binding energy on the mass ratio and on the interaction strength within the medium. In particular, we determine the equation of state in the case of a static (infinite mass) impurity, where three-body correlations are irrele…
In the framework of coupled 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equations, we explore the dynamics of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate where the intra-component interaction is repulsive, while the inter-component one is attractive. The existence regimes of stable self-trapped localized states in the form of symbiotic solitons have been analyzed. Imbalanced mixtures, where the number of atoms in one component exceeds the number of atoms in the other component, are considered in parabolic potential and box-like trap. When all the intra-species and inter-species interactions are repulsive, we numerically find a…
Recent experimental realizations of superfluid mixtures of Bose and Fermi quantum gases provide a unique platform for exploring diverse superfluid phenomena. We study dipole oscillations of a double superfluid in a cigar-shaped optical dipole trap, consisting of $^{41}$K and $^{6}$Li atoms with a large mass imbalance, where the oscillations of the bosonic and fermionic components are coupled via the Bose-Fermi interaction. In our high-precision measurements, the frequencies of both components are observed to be shifted from the single-species ones, and exhibit unusual features. The frequency s…
We theoretically address magnetic ordering at zero and finite temperature in both homogeneous and trapped Bose-Bose mixtures in optical lattices. By using Bosonic Dynamical Mean-Field Theory, we obtain the phase diagram of the homogeneous two-component Bose-Hubbard model in a three-dimensional (3D) cubic lattice, which features competing magnetic order of XY-ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic type in addition to the Mott and superfluid states. We show that these magnetic phases persist also in the presence of a harmonic trap.
We study the effect of Efimov physics (in the few-body sector) to the spectral response of Bose polaron, a many-body system consisting of an impurity immersed in a bath of bosonic atoms. We find that the Efimov correlation can be greatly enhanced by increasing the mass ratio between the bosons and the impurity, which results in visible signatures in the rf spectrum of the polaron. Using a diagrammatic approach up to the third-order virial expansion, we show how the mass imbalance and the enhanced three-body effect modify the line shape and the width of the polaron spectrum. Moreover, we study …
We calculate the spatial distributions and the dynamics of a few-body two-component strongly interacting Bose gas confined to an effectively one-dimensional trapping potential. We describe the densities for each component in the trap for different interaction and population imbalances. We calculate the time evolution of the system and show that, for a certain ratio of interactions, the minority population travels through the system as an effective wave packet.
In this paper, the condensate fraction and the critical atom number and its corresponding critical temperature of condensate ultracold boson atoms trapped in optical box traps, are investigated. The semiclassical approximation is employed in this study. The boxes traps are modeled by a general power-law potential. The deviation of the boxes traps from an ideal boxes traps are discussed. The out come results furnish useful quantitative theoretical results for the future BEC experiments in such traps
We investigate dipole modes in a trapped Bose--Fermi mixture gas in the normal phase, composed of single-species bosons and single-species fermions with $s$-wave scattering. In the extremely low temperature regime, Bose--Einstein statistics and Fermi--Dirac statistics may give rise to an interesting temperature dependence of collective modes. Applying the moment method to the linearized Boltzmann equation, we study the transition of the dipole modes between the hydrodynamic regime and the collisionless regime.
We study an ultracold Bose gas in an optical dipole trap consisting of one single focused laser beam. An analytical expression for the corresponding density of states beyond the usual harmonic approximation is obtained. We are thus able to discuss the existence of a critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation and find that the phase transition must be enabled by a cutoff near the threshold. Moreover, we study the dynamics of evaporative cooling and observe significant deviations from the findings for the well-established harmonic approximation. Furthermore, we investigate Bose-Einstein…
We theoretically investigate collective modes of a one-dimensional (1D) interacting Bose gas in harmonic traps at finite temperatures, by using a variational approach and local density approximation. We find that the temperature dependence of collective mode frequencies is notably different in the weakly and strongly interacting regimes. Therefore, the experimental measurement of collective modes could provide a sensitive probe for different quantum phases of a 1D trapped Bose gas, realized by tuning the interatomic interaction strength and temperature. Our prediction on the temperature depend…
We present a new model of quasi-one-dimensional trap with some unknown physical predictions about a second transition, including about a change in fractions of condensed coherence lengths due to the existence of a second critical temperature Tm < Tc. If this physical model is acceptable, we want to challenge experimental physicists in this regard.
The shift in condensation temperature caused by interactions is studied up to second order in the s-wave scattering length in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a temperature-dependent three-dimensional generic potential. With no assumptions other than the mean-field approach and semiclassical approximations it is shown that the inclusion of a temperature-dependent trap improves the empirical values of the numerical parameters compared to those obtained in previous reports on the temperature shift.
We study two-component (or pseudo-spin-1/2) Bose or Fermi gases in one dimension, in which particles are convertible between the components. Through bosonization and numerical analyses of a simple lattice model, we demonstrate that, in such gases, a strong intercomponent repulsion induces spontaneous population imbalance between the components, namely, the ferromagnetism of the pseudo spins. The imbalanced phase contains gapless charge excitations characterized as a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and gapped spin excitations. We uncover a crucial effect of the intercomponent particle hopping on the …
We analyze the phase structure of mass- and spin-imbalanced unitary Fermi gases in harmonic traps. To this end, we employ Density Functional Theory in the local density approximation. Depending on the values of the control parameters measuring mass and spin imbalance, we observe that three regions exist in the trap, namely: a superfluid region at the center, surrounded by a mixed region of resonantly interacting spin-up and spin-down fermions, and finally a fully polarized phase surrounding the previous two regions. We also find regimes in the phase diagram where the existence of a superfluid …
We consider the mass-imbalanced sensibility for the emergence of vortex patterns in the Bose-Einstein condensed binary mixture of rubidium-cesium ($^{85}$Rb-$^{133}$Cs), confined in quasi-two-dimensional harmonic traps, with one species linearly perturbed in one direction. Non-dipolar coupled species are chosen to highlight mass symmetry effects. We first analyze the condensed mixture in the unperturbed non-rotating regime, where radial phase separation is verified in the immiscible regime, which occurs for large ratio between inter- and intra-species repulsive interactions. By going to the li…
The superfluid mixture of interacting Bose and Fermi species is a remarkable many-body quantum system. Dilute degenerate atomic gases, especially for two species of distinct masses, are excellent candidates for exploring fundamental features of superfluid mixture. However, producing a mass-imbalance Bose-Fermi superfluid mixture, providing an unambiguous visual proof of two-species superfluidity and probing inter-species interaction effects remain challenging. Here, we report the realization of a two-species superfluid of lithium-6 and potassium-41. By rotating the dilute gases, we observe the…
We study population imbalanced Fermi mixtures under quasi-two-dimensional confinement at zero temperature. Using mean-field theory and the local-density approximation, we study the ground state configuration throughout the BEC-BCS crossover. We find the trapped system to be either fully normal or to consist of a superfluid core surrounded by a normal shell, which is itself either fully or partially polarized. Upon changing the trap imbalance, the trap configuration may undergo continuous transitions between the different ground states. Finally, we argue that thermal equilibration throughout th…
We consider the problem of spin-triplet p-wave superfluid pairing with total spin projection $m_s=0$ in atomic Fermi gas across the Feshbach resonance. We allow for imbalanced populations and take into account the effects due to presence of a parabolic trapping potential. Within the mean-field approximation for the one- and two-channel pairing models we show that depending on the distance from the center of a trap at least two superfluid states will have the lowest energy. Superfluid shells which emerge in a trap may have two out of three angular components of the p-wave superfluid order param…
We give numerical estimates of various unstable stationary solutions of the Gross--Pitaevskii equation in an axially symmetric set up with a linear trapping potential along the symmetry axis, and a quadratic trapping along the radial direction. These represent topological coherent modes of Bose--Einstein condensates in a gravito optical surface trap (GOST). Despite their instability, we find that many of these solutions decay sufficiently slow, so that they could be realized experimentally.
We consider a strongly interacting one-dimensional (1D) Bose-Fermi mixture confined in a hard wall trap or a harmonic oscillator trap with a tunable $δ$-function barrier at the trap center. The mixture consists of 1D Bose gas with repulsive interactions and of 1D noninteracting spin-aligned Fermi gas, both species interacting through hard-core interactions. Using a generalized Bose-Fermi mapping, we calculated the reduced single-particle density matrix and the momentum distribution of the gas as a function of barrier strength and the parity of particle number. The secondary peaks in the moment…
We report new results for the Thomas-Fermi groundstate and the quadrupolar modes of density oscillations of a spin- polarized dipolar interacting Bose-Einstein condensate for the case when the external magnetic field is not orientated parallel to a principal axis of a harmonic anisotropic trap.
We study equal mass population imbalanced two-component atomic Fermi gas with unequal trap frequencies $(ω_{\uparrow} \neq ω_{\downarrow})$ at zero temperature using the local density approximation (LDA). We consider the strongly attracting Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) limit where polarized (gapless) superfluid is stable. The system exhibits shell structure: unpolarized SF$\to$polarized SF$\to$normal N. Compared to trap symmetric case, when the majority component is tightly confined the gapless superfluid shell grows in size leading to reduced threshold polarization to form polarized (gapl…
A method is proposed to design the time dependence of the trap frequency and achieve in a short time an adiabatic-like (frictionless) evolution of Bose-Einstein condensates governed by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Different cases depending on the effective dimension of the trap and the interaction regimes are considered. 2D traps are particularly suitable as the method can be applied without the need to impose any additional time-dependent change in the strength of the interatomic interaction or a Thomas-Fermi regime as it occurs for 1D and 3D traps.
We report on a simple novel trapping scheme for the generation of Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{87}$Rb atoms. This scheme employs a near-infrared single beam optical dipole trap combined with a weak magnetic quadrupole field as used for magneto-optical trapping to enhance the confinement in axial direction. Efficient forced evaporative cooling to the phase transition is achieved in this weak hybrid trap via reduction of the laser intensity of the optical dipole trap at constant magnetic field gradient.
This paper is a short introduction to cold atom physics and Bose-Einstein condensation. Light forces on atoms are presented, together with laser cooling, and a few atom traps: the magneto-optical trap, dipole traps and magnetic traps. A brief description of Bose-Einstein condensation is given together with some important links with condensed matter physics. The reader is referred to comprehensive reviews and to other lecture notes for further details on atom cooling, trapping and Bose-Einstein condensation.
We present phase diagrams for population imbalanced, trapped Fermi superfluids near unitarity. In addition to providing quantitative values for the superfluid transition temperature, the pairing onset temperature and the transition line (separating the Sarma and phase separation regimes), we study experimental signatures of these transitions based on density profiles and density differences at the center. Predictions on the BCS side of resonance show unexpected behavior, which should be searched for experimentally.
The problem of particle fluctuations in arbitrary nonuniform systems with Bose-Einstein condensate is considered. This includes the case of trapped Bose atoms. It is shown that the correct description of particle fluctuations for any nonuniform system of interacting atoms always results in thermodynamically normal fluctuations.
We investigate some aspects of the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of quantum gases in the presence of inhomogeneous conditions. We consider three-dimensional (3D) quantum gases trapped by an external potential when the temperature is sufficiently low to show a BEC phase region around the center of the trap. If the trap is sufficiently large, different phases may coexist in different space regions, when moving from the center of the trap. We show that the quantum gas develops a peculiar critical behavior at the boundary of the BEC region, whose scaling behavior is controlled by the universali…
The ground-state properties of the two-flavored mixture of a few attractive fermions confined in a one-dimensional harmonic trap is studied. It is shown that for slightly imbalanced system the pairing between fermions of opposite spins has completely different features that in the balanced case. The fraction of correlated pairs is suppressed by the presence of additional particle and another uncorrelated two-body orbital dominates in the ground-state of the system.
We report a simple method for the creation of Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{85}$Rb by direct evaporation in a crossed optical dipole trap. The independent control of the trap frequencies and magnetic bias field afforded by the trapping scheme permits full control of the trapped atomic sample, enabling the collision parameters to be easily manipulated to achieve efficient evaporation in the vicinity of the 155 G Feshbach resonance. We produce nearly pure condensates of up to $4\times10^4$ atoms and demonstrate the tunable nature of the atomic interactions.
Generation of different nonequilibrium states in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates is studied by numerically solving nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Inducing nonequilibrium states by shaking the trap, the following states are created: weak nonequilibrium, the state of vortex germs, the state of vortex rings, the state of straight vortex lines, the state of deformed vortices, vortex turbulence, grain turbulence, and wave turbulence. A characterization of nonequilibrium states is advanced by introducing effective temperature, Fresnel number, and Mach number.
A detailed description is given of the phase diagram for a two-component unitary Fermi gas with mass and population imbalance, for both homogeneous and trapped systems. This aims at providing quantitative benchmarks for the normal-to-superfluid phase transition of a mass-imbalanced Fermi gas in the temperature-polarization parameter space. A self-consistent t-matrix approach is adopted, which has already proven to accurately describe the thermodynamic properties of the mass and population balanced unitary Fermi gas. Our results provide a guideline for the ongoing experiments on heteronuclear F…
We derive a governing equation for a Kelvin wave supported on a vortex line in a Bose-Einstein condensate, in a rotating cylindrically symmetric parabolic trap. From this solution the Kelvin wave dispersion relation is determined. In the limit of an oblate trap and in the absence of longitudinal trapping our results are consistent with previous work. We show that the derived Kelvin wave dispersion in the general case is in quantitative agreement with numerical calculations of the Bogoliubov spectrum and offer a significant improvement upon previous analytical work.
We study the finite temperature $T$ behavior of trapped Fermi gases as they undergo BCS-Bose Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover, in the presence of a population imbalance. Our results, in qualitative agreement with recent experiments, show how the superfluid phase transition is directly reflected in the particle density profiles. We demonstrate that at $ T \neq 0$ and in the near-BEC and unitary regimes, the polarization is excluded from the superfluid core. Nevertheless a substantial polarization fraction is carried by a normal region of the trap having strong pair correlations, which we a…
We theoretically study the scale-invariant relaxation dynamics in segregating two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with large particle-number imbalance, and uncover that random walk of droplet for the minor component plays a fundamental role in the relaxation process. Our numerical simulations based on the binary Gross-Pitaevskii model reveal the emergence of the dynamical scaling during the relaxation, which is a hallmark of scale-invariant dynamics, in a correlation function for the minor condensate. Tracking exponents characterizing the dynamical scaling in time, we find out a crossover …
We report on the realization of a sodium Bose--Einstein condensate (BEC) in a combined red-detuned optical dipole trap, formed by two beams crossing in a horizontal plane and a third, tightly focused dimple trap propagating vertically. We produce a BEC in three main steps: loading of the crossed dipole trap from laser-cooled atoms, an intermediate evaporative cooling stage which results in efficient loading of the auxiliary dimple trap, and a final evaporative cooling stage in the dimple trap. Our protocol is implemented in a compact setup and allows us to reach quantum degeneracy even with re…
The mass-imbalanced fermionic mixture is studied, where $N\le5$ identical fermions interact resonantly with an impurity, a distinguishable atom. The shell structure is explored, and the physics of a dynamic light-impurity is shown to be different from that of the static heavy-impurity case. The energies in a harmonic trap at unitarity are calculated and extrapolated to the zero-range limit. In doing so, the scaling factor of the ground state, as well as of a few excited states, is calculated. In the $2 \le N \le 4$ systems, pure $(N+1)$ Efimov states exist for large enough mass ratio. However,…
