We construct a static and spherical excited state without singularities in renormalizable quantum gravity with background-free nature asymptotically. Its diameter is given by a correlation length of the quantum gravity, longer than the Planck length by 2 orders of magnitude, and it has a Schwarzschild tail outside. The quantum gravity dynamics inside is described by employing a nonperturbative expression of higher-order corrections assumed from a physical requirement that the dynamics disappear at the edge where it is in strong coupling. A running coupling constant that is a manifestation of nonlinearity and nonlocality is managed by approximating it as a mean field that depends on the radial coordinate. If the mass is several times the Planck mass, we can set up a system of linearized equations of motion for the gravitational potentials incorporating the running effect and obtain the excited state as its solution. It may be a candidate for dark matter, and will give a new perspective on black hole physics.
Localized unitary operators are basic probes of locality and causality in quantum systems: localized unitary operators create localized excitations in entangled states. Working with an explicit form, we explore the properties of these operators in quantum mechanics and quantum field theory. We show that, unlike unitary operators, local non-unitary operators generically create non-local excitations. We present a local picture for quantum systems in which localized experimentalists can only act through localized Hamiltonian deformations, and therefore localized unitary operators. We demonstrate …
Kelvin waves or Kelvons have been known for a long time as gapless excitations propagating along superfluid vortices. These modes can be interpreted as the Nambu-Goldstone excitations arising from the spontaneous breaking of the translational symmetry. Recently a different type of gapless excitation localized on strings -- the so-called non-Abelian mode -- attracted much attention in high-energy physics. We discuss their relevance in condensed matter physics. Although we failed to find exactly gapless non-Abelian modes, non-Abelian rotational quasigapless excitations are argued to exist on the…
We find the excitations and construct the conserved charges ( mass and angular momentum) of the recently found Minimal Massive Gravity (MMG) in 2+1 dimensions in asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes. The field equation of the theory does not come from an action and hence lacks the required Bianchi Identity needed to define conserved charges. But the theory, which also provides a healthy extension of the Topologically Massive Gravity in the bulk and boundary of spacetime, does admit conserved charges for metric that are solutions. Our construction is based on background Killing vector…
Wigner's famous 1939 classification of positive energy representations, combined with the more recent modular localization principle, has led to a significant conceptual and computational extension of renormalized perturbation theory to interactions involving fields of higher spin s>1/2. The starting observation was that the well-known clash between point-localized gauge theories and the Hilbert space, which hitherto has been solved by using a Krein space setting, can also be solved by preserving the Hilbert space setting; in this case the theory selects the tightest covariant localization whi…
We argue that localized excitations in Minkowski space must be thought of as constrained states of holographic degrees of freedom. The Minkowski "vacuum" is in fact a density matrix of infinite entropy. The argument assumes that Minkowski space can be viewed as a limit of a space-time with non-vanishing cosmological constant, either positive or negative.
This is the first of two papers studying localization of massive bulk fields on a bane in 5D anti-de Sitter spacetime, and some of their cosmological consequences. Here we focus on a massive 5D scalar, which is known to lack a localized mode, and discuss how a seeming discontinuity between this theory and the massless theory - known to support a localized zero mode - is resolved thanks to peculiar analytic properties of the massive two-point amplitude. Furthermore, we propose a boundary term that leads to the emergence of a massless localized mode in the massive theory. Last but not least, we …
We consider the massive scalar field, the Proca field and the Fierz-Pauli field in the Schwarzschild spacetime and we focus more particularly on their long-lived quasinormal modes. We show numerically that the associated excitation factors have a strong resonant behavior and we confirm this result analytically from semiclassical considerations based on the properties of the unstable circular geodesics on which a massive particle can orbit the black hole. The conspiracy of (i) the long-lived behavior of the quasinormal modes and (ii) the resonant behavior of their excitation factors induces int…
It is well-known that a (point-localized) free quantum field for massive particles with spin $s$ acting in a Hilbert space has at best scaling dimension $s+1$, which excludes its use in the perturbative construction of renormalizable interacting models for higher spin ($s\geq 1$). Up to date, such models have been constructed only in the context of gauge theory, at the cost of introducing additional unphysical (ghost) fields and an unphysical (indefinite metric) state space. The unphysical degrees of freedom are divided out by requiring gauge (or BRST) invariance. We construct free quantum fie…
Bulk localized excited states in an AdS spacetime can be constructed from Ishibashi states with respect to the global conformal symmetry in the dual CFT. We study boundary two point functions of primary operators in the presence of bulk localized excitations in two dimensional CFTs. From two point functions in holographic CFTs, we observe causal propagations of radiations when the mass of dual bulk scalar field is close to the BF bound. This behavior for holographic CFTs is consistent with the locality and causality in classical gravity duals. We also show that this cannot be seen in free ferm…
We study (massive) spin-2 fluctuations around warped $AdS_6$ solutions with $16$ supersymmetries in type IIB supergravity. We identify two classes of fluctuations which are universally present for all solutions of this form. The holographically dual operators have scaling dimensions $Δ=5+3\ell$ and $Δ=6+3\ell$, where the integer $\ell$ encodes the $R$-symmetry charge. They are identified as descendant states in respective BPS multiplets (the current multiplet for $Δ=5$). We also compute the normalization of the energy-momentum tensor two-point function and show that it is related to the $S^5$ …
