We investigate the effect of disorder in the laser intensity on the dynamics of dark-state polaritons in an array of 20 cavities, each containing an ensemble of four-level atoms that is described by a Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. We examine the evolution of the polariton number in the cavities starting from a state with either one or two polaritons in one of the cavities. For the case of a single polariton without disorder in the laser intensity, we calculate the wavefunction of the polariton and find that it disperses away from the initial cavity with time. The addition of disorder results in minimal suppression of the dispersal of the wavefunction. In the case of two polaritons with an on-site repulsion to hopping strength ratio of 20, we find that the polaritons form a repulsively bound state or dimer. Without disorder the dimer wavefunction disperses similarly to the single polariton wavefunction but over a longer time period. The addition of sufficiently strong disorder results in localization of the polariton dimer. The localization length is found to be described by a power law with exponent -1.31. We also find that we can localise the dimer at any given time by switching on the disorder.
We present a new method to study the semiclassical dynamics of the Jaynes-Cummings dimer model, describing two coupled cavities each containing a two-level system (qubit). We develop a Fock space WKB approach in the polariton basis where each site is treated exactly while the intersite polariton hopping is treated semiclassically. We show that the self-trapped states can be viewed as Fock space localized states. We find that this picture yields the correct critical value of interaction strength at which the delocalization-localization transition occurs. Moreover, the validity of our WKB approa…
Considering two-level media in the array of weakly coupled nano-cavities, we reveal a variety of dynamical regimes, such as diffusion, self-trapping, soliton, and breathers for the wave-packets in the presence of photon tunneling processes between the next-nearest cavities. We focus our attention on the low branch (LB) bright polariton soliton formation, due to the two-body polariton-polariton scattering processes. When detuning frequency is manipulated adiabatically, the low-branch lattice polariton localized states, i.e., that are solitons and breathers evolving between photon-like and matte…
We investigate a chain of superconducting stripline resonators, each interacting with a transmon qubit, that are capacitively coupled in a row. We show that the dynamics of this system can be described by a Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian with attractive interactions for polaritons, superpositions of photons and qubit excitations. This setup we envisage constitutes one of the first platforms where all technological components that are needed to experimentally study chains of strongly interacting polaritons have already been realized. By driving the first stripline resonator with a microwave source an…
We demonstrate a new type of transition within the strong coupling regime, which alters the coupling mechanism in multimode cavities. We show that this transition drastically modifies the Hamiltonian describing the polaritons, such that different cavity modes are either entangled via the material or completely decoupled. This decoupling transition occurs due to the competition between the dissipation in the material and the finite group velocity, which governs the propagation of information across the cavity and among the molecules. The results indicate that the velocity of light, which is oft…
Frenkel polaritons, hybrid light-matter quasiparticles, offer promises for the designing of new opto-electronic devices. However, their technological implementations are hindered by sensitivity to imperfections. Topology has raised as a way to circumvent defects and fabrication limitations. Here, we propose a lattice of cavities to realize the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model (SSH) for topological Frenkel polaritons. By engineering the configuration of the cavities we demonstrate that the SSH topological and trivial phases can be accessed, which we unravel by complementary classical …
We formulate a scattering theory to study magnetic films in microwave cavities beyond the independent-spin and rotating wave approximations of the Tavis-Cummings model. We demonstrate that strong coupling can be realized not only for the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) mode, but also for spin wave resonances (SWRs); the coupling strengths are mode dependent and decrease with increasing mode index. The strong coupling regime can be also accessed electrically by spin pumping into a metal contact.
Molecular polaritons are the optical excitations which emerge when molecular transitions interact strongly with confined electromagnetic fields. Increasing interest in the hybrid molecular-photonic materials that host these excitations stems from recent observations of their novel and tunable chemistry. Some of the remarkable functionalities exhibited by polaritons include the ability to induce long-range excitation energy transfer, enhance charge conductivity, and inhibit or enhance chemical reactions. In this review, we explain the effective theories of molecular polaritons which form a basi…
Microcavity polaritons are bosonic light-matter particles that can emit coherent radiation without electronic population inversion via bosonic scattering. This phenomenon, known as polariton lasing, strongly depends on the polaritons' confinement. Shrinking the polaritons' mode volume increases the interactions mediated by their excitonic part, and thereby the density-dependent blueshift of the polariton to a higher energy is enhanced. Previously, polariton lasing has been demonstrated in micropillars with diameters larger than three microns, in grating based cavities, fiber cavities and photo…
Quantum simulation is a promising approach to understand complex strongly correlated many-body systems using relatively simple and tractable systems. Photon-based quantum simulators have great advantages due to the possibility of direct measurements of multi-particle correlations and ease of simulating non-equilibrium physics. However, interparticle interaction in existing photonic systems is often too weak limiting the potential of quantum simulation. Here we propose an approach to enhance the interparticle interaction using exciton-polaritons in MoS$_2$ monolayer quantum-dots embedded in 2D …
The interaction of organic molecules and molecular aggregates with electromagnetic fields that are strongly confined inside optical cavities within nanoscale volumes, has allowed the observation of exotic quantum regimes of light-matter interaction at room temperature, for a wide variety of cavity materials and geometries. Understanding the universal features of such organic cavities represents a significant challenge for theoretical modelling, as experiments show that these systems are characterized by an intricate competition between coherent and dissipative processes involving entangled nuc…

The ultrafast scattering dynamics of intersubband polaritons in dispersive cavities embedding GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells are studied directly within their band structure using a non-collinear pump-probe geometry with phase-stable mid-infrared pulses. Selective excitation of the lower polariton at a frequency of ~25 THz and at a finite in-plane momentum, $k_{||}$, leads to the emergence of a narrowband maximum in the probe reflectivity at $k_{||}=0$. A quantum mechanical model identifies the underlying microscopic process as stimulated coherent polariton-polariton scattering. These results mark …
Polaritons are quasiparticles arising from the strong coupling of electromagnetic waves in cavities and dipolar oscillations in a material medium. In this framework, localized surface plasmon in metallic nanoparticles defining optical nanocavities have attracted increasing interests in the last decade. This interest results from their sub-diffraction mode volume, which offers access to extremely high photonic densities by exploiting strong scattering cross-sections. However, high absorption losses in metals have hindered the observation of collective coherent phenomena, such as condensation. I…
Open-dissipative systems obeying parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry are capable of demonstrating oscillatory dynamics akin to the conservative systems. In contrast to limit cycle solutions characteristic of nonlinear systems, the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric oscillations form a continuum of non-isolated orbits. However, precise sculpturing of the real potential and the gain-loss spatial profiles required for establishing of the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry is practically challenging. The optical devices, such as lasers, exhibit relaxation dynamics and do not operate as the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric s…
We demonstrate Resonant Tunneling Diodes, embedded in double metal cavities, strongly coupled to the cavity field, while maintaining their electronic properties. We measure the polariton dispersion and find a relative vacuum Rabi splitting of 16%, which explicitly qualifies for the strong-coupling regime. Additionally we show that electronic transport has a significant influence on the polaritons by modulating the coupling strength. The merge between electronic transport and polaritonic physics in our devices opens up a new aspect of cavity quantum electro-dynamics and integrated photonics.
Plasmon polaritons in van der Waals (vdW) materials hold promise for next-generation photonics. The ability to deterministically imprint spatial patterns of high carrier density in cavities and circuitry with nanoscale features underlies future progress in nonlinear nanophotonics and strong light-matter interactions. Here, we demonstrate a general strategy to atomically imprint low-loss graphene plasmonic structures using oxidation-activated charge transfer (OCT). We cover graphene with a monolayer of WSe$_2$, which is subsequently oxidized into high work-function WOx to activate charge transf…
A new platform for fabricating polariton lasers operating at room temperature is introduced: nitride-based distributed Bragg reflectors epitaxially grown on patterned silicon substrates. The patterning allows for an enhanced strain relaxation thereby enabling to stack a large number of crack-free AlN/AlGaN pairs and achieve cavity quality factors of several thousands with a large spatial homogeneity. GaN and ZnO active regions are epitaxially grown thereon and the cavities are completed with top dielectric Bragg reflectors. The two structures display strong-coupling and polariton lasing at roo…
Self-sustained oscillations, limit cycles, are a fundamental phenomenon unique to nonlinear dynamic systems of high-dimensional phase space. They enable understanding of a wide range of cyclic processes in natural, social and engineering systems. Here we show that limit cycles form in coupled polariton cavities following the breaking of Josephson coupling, leading to frequency-comb emission. The limit cycles and destruction of Josephson coupling both appear due to interplay between strong polariton-polariton interaction and a dissipative contribution to the cavity coupling. The resulting nonli…
The way molecules absorb, transfer, and emit light can be modified by coupling them to optical cavities. The extent of the modification is often defined by the cavity-molecule coupling strength, which depends on the number of coupled molecules. We experimentally and numerically study the evolution of photoemission from a thin layered J-aggregated molecular material strongly coupled to a Fabry-Perot microcavity as a function of the number of coupled layers. We unveil an important difference between the strong coupling signatures obtained from reflection spectroscopy and from polariton assisted …
Strong coupling between magnon and electromagnetic wave can lead to the formation of a coupled spinphoton quasiparticle named as magnon-polariton. The phenomenon is well studied for ferromagnetic systems inside microwave cavities in recent years. However, formation of magnon-polariton is rarely seen for an antiferromagnet (AFM) because the strong coupling condition is not easily fulfilled. Here we present time-domain terahertz measurement on a multiferroic polar antiferromagnet Fe2Mo3O8. We find clearly beating between two modes at frequencies above and below the electric-active magnon frequen…
