When the matter from a companion star is accreted towards the central compact accretor, i.e. a black hole (BH) or a neutron star (NS), an accretion disc and a jet outflow will form, providing bight X-ray and radio emission, which is known as X-ray binaries (XRBs). In the low/hard state, there exist disc-jet couplings in XRBs, but it remains uncertain whether the jet power comes from the disc or the central accretor. Moreover, BHXRBs have different properties compared with NSXRBs: quiescent BHXRBs are typically two to three orders of magnitude less luminous than NSXRBs in X-ray, whereas BHXRBs are more radio loud than NSXRBs. In observations, an empirical correlation has been established between radio and X-ray luminosity, $L_{\rm R} \propto L_{\rm X}^b$, where $b\sim 0.7$ for BHXRBs and $b \sim 1.4$ for non-pulsating NSXRBs. However, there are some outliers of BHXRBs showing unusually steep correlation as NSXRBs at higher luminosities. In this work, under the assumption that the origin of jet power is related to the internal energy of the inner disc, we apply our magnetized, radiatively efficient thin disc model and the well-known radiatively inefficient accretion flow model to NSXRBs and BHXRBs. We find that the observed radio/X-ray correlations in XRBs can be well understood by the disc-jet couplings.
We present a suite of high resolution hydrodynamic simulations of binaries immersed in circumbinary accretion disks (CBDs). For the first time, we investigate the preferential accretion rate as a function of both eccentricity $e_{\rm b}$ and mass ratio $q_{\rm b}$ in a densely sampled parameter space, finding that when compared with circular binaries, mass ratios grow more efficiently in binaries on moderately eccentric orbits ($0.0 \lesssim e_{\rm b} \lesssim 0.4$), and high eccentricities ($e_{\rm b} \gtrsim 0.6 $) suppress mass ratio growth. We suggest that this non-monotonic preferential a…
X-ray flux from the inner hot region around central compact object in a binary system illuminates the upper surface of an accretion disc and it behaves like a corona. This region can be photoionised by the illuminating radiation, thus can emit different emission lines. We study those line spectra in black hole X-ray binaries for different accretion flow parameters including its geometry. The varying range of model parameters captures maximum possible observational features. We also put light on the routinely observed Fe line emission properties based on different model parameters, ionization r…

In this paper, we employ Machine Learning algorithms on multi-mission observations for the classification of accretion states of outbursting Black hole X-ray binaries for the first time. Archival data from RXTE, Swift, MAXI and AstroSat observatories are used to generate the hardness intensity diagrams (HIDs) for outbursts of the sources XTE J1859+226 (1999 outburst), GX 339-4 (2002, 2004, 2007 and 2010 outbursts), IGR J17091-3624 (2016 outburst), and MAXI J1535-571 (2017 outburst). Based on variation of X-ray flux, hardness ratios, presence of various types of Quasi-periodic Oscillations (QPO…
Supermassive black hole binaries are likely to accrete interstellar gas through a circumbinary disk. Shortly before merger, the inner portions of this circumbinary disk are subject to general relativistic effects. To study this regime, we approximate the spacetime metric of close orbiting black holes by superimposing two boosted Kerr-Schild terms. After demonstrating the quality of this approximation, we carry out very long-term general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the circumbinary disk. We consider black holes with spin dimensionless parameters of magnitude 0.9, in one simu…
We present global radiation GRMHD simulations of strongly magnetized accretion onto a spinning, stellar mass black hole at sub-Eddington rates. Using a frequency-dependent Monte Carlo procedure for Compton scattering, we self-consistently evolve a two-temperature description of the ion-electron fluid and its radiation field. For an Eddington ratio $L/L_{\rm Edd} \gtrsim 10^{-3}$, the emergent spectrum forms an apparent power law shape from thermal Comptonization up to a cutoff at $\simeq 100$ keV, characteristic of that seen in the hard spectral states of black hole X-ray binary systems. At th…
Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) are compact binaries with white dwarf (WD) primaries. CVs and other accreting WD binaries (AWBs) are useful laboratories for studying accretion flows, gas dynamics, outflows, transient outbursts, and explosive nuclear burning under different astrophysical plasma conditions. They have been studied over decades and are important for population studies of galactic X-ray sources. Recent space- and ground-based high resolution spectral and timing studies, along with recent surveys indicate that we still have observational and theoretical complexities yet to answer. I rev…
Vela X-1 as a laboratory for accretion in High-Mass X-ray Binaries
We present in this paper a first step toward a semi-analytical treatment of the accretion process in wind-fed neutron star supergiant X-ray binaries with eccentric orbits. We consider the case of a spherically symmetric wind for the supergiant star and a simplified model for the accretion onto the compact object. A self-consistent calculation of the photoionization of the stellar wind by the X-rays from the accreting neutron star is included. This effect is convolved with the modulation of the mass accretion rate induced by the eccentric orbit to obtain the expected X-ray luminosity of a syste…
In this paper we use an RXTE library of spectral models from 10 black-hole and 9 pulsar X-ray binaries, as well as model spectra available in the literature from 13 extra-galactic Ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs). We compute average bolometric corrections (BC=$\mathrm{L_{band}/L_{bol}}$) for our sample as a function of different accretion rates. We notice the same behaviour between black-hole and pulsars BCs only when ULX pulsars are included. These measurements provide a picture of the energetics of the accretion flow for an X-ray binary based solely on its observed luminosity in a given b…
Variable features in black hole X-ray Binaries (BH-XRBs) are observed in different energy ranges and time scales. The physical origin of different spectral states in BH-XRBs and their relations with the underlying accretion disc are still elusive. To investigate the intermediate state of BH-XRBs during outburst, we simulate a truncated accretion disc around a Kerr black hole using a general relativistic magneto-hydrodynamical (GRMHD) framework under axisymmetry with adaptively refined mesh. Additionally, we have also carried out radiative transfer calculations for understanding the implication…
The recurring transient outbursts in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) provide us with strong test-beds for constraining the poorly understood accretion process. While impossible to image directly, phase-resolved spectroscopy can provide a powerful diagnostic to study their highly complex, time-dependent accretion discs. We present an 8-month long multi-wavelength (UV, optical, X-ray) monitoring campaign of the new candidate black hole LMXB MAXI J0637$-$430 throughout its 2019/2020 outburst, using the {\em Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory}, as well as three quasi-simultaneous epochs of Gemini/GMOS…
The models that seek to explain the reflection spectrum in black hole binaries usually invoke a point-like primary source of hard X-rays. This source illuminates the accretion disk and gives rise to the discrete (lines) and continuum-reflected components. The main goal of this work is to investigate whether the extended, mildly relativistic jet that is present in black hole binaries in the hard and hard-intermediate states is the hard X-ray source that illuminates the accretion disk. We use a Monte Carlo code that simulates the process of inverse Compton scattering in a mildly relativistic jet…
At the final stages of a supermassive black hole coalescence, the emission of gravitational waves will efficiently remove energy and angular momentum from the binary orbit, allowing the separation between the compact objects to shrink. In the scenario where a circumprimary disc is present, a squeezing phase will develop, in which the tidal interaction between the disc and the secondary black hole could push the gas inwards, enhancing the accretion rate on to the primary and producing what is known as an electromagnetic precursor. In this context, using 3D hydrodynamic simulations, we study how…
Black hole X-ray binaries (BHXBs) show rich phenomenology in the spectral and timing properties. We collected the spectral data of 20 BHXBs from the literature across different spectral states. The spectral properties are studied in the forms of the inner disc temperature ($T_{\rm in}$), photon index ($Γ$), hot electron temperature ($kT_{\rm e}$), X-ray flux ($F_{\rm X}$) and luminosity ($L_{\rm X}$). We studied various correlations among different spectral parameters to understand the accretion process on a global scale. In the thermal soft states (TSS), we find most of the sources followed $…
We have analyzed the X-ray spectra of all known Ultra Compact X-ray Binaries (UCXBs), with the purpose of constraining the chemical composition of their accretion disk and donor star. Our investigation was focused on the presence (or absence) of the Fe K$α$ emission line, which was used as the probe of chemical composition of the disk, based on previously established theoretical predictions for the reflection of X-ray radiation off the surface of C/O-rich or He-rich accretion disks in UCXBs. We have contrasted the results of our spectral analysis to the history of type I X-ray bursts from thes…
