The characteristics of extensive air showers that are sensitive to the mass composition of primary cosmic radiation are recorded in the EAS core. These characteristics include the parameters of the phenomenon of "halo". Studies have shown that the bulk of the events recorded in XRECs are produced by protons and He nuclei, which allows the estimation of the fraction of light nuclei in PCR. The events under analysis were obtained in the XREC PAMIR experiment, and the properties of these events were studied at distances extending up to about 10 cm from the EAS axis with a resolution of approximately 30 micro m. The investigation of the parameters of events in EAS cores by the halo method permitted analyzing the mass composition of PCR at E0=10 PeV and assessing the fraction of light nuclei in PCR, which depend only slightly on the model of EAS propagation through the atmosphere. From an analysis of gamma-ray families featuring a halo and multicenter halos obtained in the PAMIR XREC, it was found that the fraction of the p+He component of PCR was about 40%.
The change in the fluxes of the lightest and heaviest nuclei in the mass composition of primary cosmic radiation in the energy range of E0 = 1-100 PeV is analyzed on the basis of data from the KASCADE-Grande experiment. This analysis is performed by means of the min-max age (Smin-max) method for extensive air showers (EAS) that is proposed in the present article. This method makes it possible to estimate the exponents of the spectra for the lightest and heaviest nuclei in the mass composition of primary cosmic radiation and to study irregularities in these spectra at energies E0 in the range u…
Some discrepancies have been reported between observed and simulated muon content of extensive air showers: the number of observed muons exceeded the expectations in HiRes-MIA, Yakutsk and Pierre Auger Observatory data. Here, we analyze the data of the Moscow State University Extensive Air Shower (EAS-MSU) array on E_mu>~10 GeV muons in showers caused by ~(10^17-10^18) eV primary particles and demonstrate that they agree with simulations (QGSJET-II-04 hadronic interaction model) once the primary composition inferred from the surface-detector data is assumed.
On 2017 September 22 the IceCube neutrino observatory detected a track-like, very-high-energy event (IceCube-170922A) that is spatially associated with TXS 0506+056, a quasar at a redshift of $z=0.3365$. This source is characterized by the increased acitivies in a very wide energy range (from radio to TeV) during these days. To investigate the possible connection of the PeV neutrino emission with the GeV activity of blazars, in this work we select 116 bright sources and analyze their lightcurves and spectra. We focus on the sources displaying GeV activities. Among these blazars, TXS 0506+056 s…
The energy spectrum of the primary cosmic radiation in the energy range 1 - 100 PeV and the extensive air shower (EAS) characteristics obtained on the basis of the expanded data bank of the GAMMA experiment (Mt. Aragats, Armenia) are presented. With increased statistics we confirm our previous results on the energy spectrum. The spectral index above the knee is about -3.1, but at energies beyond 20 PeV a flattening of the spectrum is observed. The existence of the 'bump' at about 70 PeV is confirmed with a significance of more than 4σ. In the energy range of 10 - 100 PeV the shower age becomes…
Evidence for high-energy astrophysical PeV neutrinos has been found in the IceCube experiment from an analysis with a 7.5 year (2010 - 2017) data. Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are among the most prominent objects in the universe, and are widely speculated to be emitters of ultra-high-energy (UHE) cosmic rays with proton domination. Based on the standard two-step LLCD mechanism of particle acceleration, a transformation of energy occurs from AGN's central super-massive black hole (SMBH) rotation to high-energy protons. Protons can be accelerated up to $\sim 0.1$ EeV energies and above, and migh…
The observed very high energy spectra of distant blazars are well described by secondary gamma rays produced in line-of-sight interactions of cosmic rays with background photons. In the absence of the cosmic-ray contribution, one would not expect to observe very hard spectra from distant sources, but the cosmic ray interactions generate very high energy gamma rays relatively close to the observer, and they are not attenuated significantly. The same interactions of cosmic rays are expected to produce a flux of neutrinos with energies peaked around 1 PeV. We show that the diffuse isotropic neutr…
Carpet-2 is an air-shower array at Baksan Valley, Russia, equipped with a large-area (175 m^2) muon detector, which makes it possible to separate primary photons from hadrons. We report the first results of the search for primary photons with energies E_γ>1 PeV, directionally associated with IceCube high-energy neutrino events, in the data obtained in 3080 days of Carpet-2 live time.
The PeV gamma ray background produced in the interactions of ultra high energy cosmic rays with the ambient matter and radiations during their propagation in the Milky Way has been calculated in this paper. If the primary ultra high energy cosmic rays are produced from Galactic point sources then those point sources are also emitting PeV gamma rays. We discuss that the detection of galactocentric PeV gamma rays in the future would be a signature of the presence of EeV cosmic accelerators in the Milky Way.
The measurement of proton plus helium and all-particle energy spectra in the range $20\,$ TeV to $5 \,$PeV and $80 \,$TeV to $5 \,$PeV respectively are presented. Data taken by the ARGO-YBJ detector in the 2010 year have been analyzed. The ARGO-YBJ experiment (Tibet, P. R. China) has been taking data for more than five years by means of a full-coverage array of RPC detectors. The discrimination between showers produced by light and heavy primaries has been performed by looking at the lateral particle density close to the core region. A Bayesian unfolding technique was therefore applied to the …
A new project is developed with the implementation of a relatively new method of studying the primary cosmic ray -- the registration of extensive air showers' optical Vavilov-Cherenkov radiation (Cherenkov light) reflected from the snow surface. The aim of the project is the study of the cosmic ray mass composition in the energy range of 1-100 PeV by detecting the reflected extensive air showers' Cherenkov light. Silicon photomultipliers are planned to be used as the main photosensitive element of the detector and an unmanned aerial vehicle will is planned to lift the measuring equipment over …
A several-step theoretical model is constructed to trace the origin of ultra high energy (UHE) $[1-2]$PeV neutrinos detected, recently, by the IceCube collaboration. Protons in the AGN magnetosphere, experiencing different gravitational centrifugal force, provide free energy for the parametric excitation of Langmuir waves via a generalized two-stream instability. Landau damping of these waves, outside the AGN magnetosphere, can accelerate protons to ultra high energies. The ultimate source for this mechanism, the Langmuir-Landau-Centrifugal-Drive (LLCD), is the gravitational energy of the comp…
The experimental gamma-families in which events called "halos" were detected using X-ray emulsion chambers (XRECs) of the PAMIR experiment are described. The halo nature is explained within the standard model of nuclear interactions. Based on events with halo, the fraction of p+He in primary cosmic rays (PCR) was estimated. It is shown that the PCR mass composition remains mixed in the range E0 = 1-100 PeV.
Pierre Auger observatory reported the distribution of arrival directions of the highest energy cosmic rays. These events were collected in 10 years of operations with declinations between -90$^\circ$ and +45$^\circ$. The IceCube neutrino telescope reported the detection of 82 extraterrestrial neutrinos in the High-Energy Starting Events catalog. The highest-energy neutrino event (IC35) reported in this catalog had an energy of 2004$^{+236}_{-262}$ TeV and its reconstruction was centered at RA=$208.4^\circ$ and DEC=$-55.8^\circ$ (J2000). Being Centaurus A the nearest radio-loud active Galactic …
We analyze the energy distributions of final (stable) products - gamma rays, neutrinos, and electrons - produced in inelastic proton-proton collisions in the PeV energy regime. We also calculate the energy spectrum of synchrotron radiation from secondary electrons, assuming that these are promptly cooled in the surrounding magnetic field. We show that the synchrotron radiation has an energy distribution much shallower than that of primary protons, and hence we suggest to take advantage of such a feature in the spectral analysis of the highest energy (cut-off) emission region from particle acce…
Energy spectra of the most energetic hadrons in the core region of extensive air showers (EAS) were studied in dependence on the EAS energy $E_0$ in the hybrid experiment HADRON at the Tien Shan mountain cosmic ray station. For the first time by direct measurement it was found in this experiment that the slope of the power energy spectrum of EAS hadrons diminishes itself locally, and the average hadron energy, correspondingly, increases between the $E_0$ borders 3PeV and 20PeV. Such behavior agrees with threshold appearance in EAS, in the same energy range, of a long-flying penetrative compone…
We put together the experimental results on muon component of extensive air showers (EAS) which were gained with various techniques at the detector complex of the Tien Shan mountain station. According to this comparison, the problem of the EAS muon content in the range of primary cosmic ray energies (1-100)PeV seems to be more complicated than it was usually supposed. Generally, from the models of nuclear interaction it follows that the EAS which have produced gamma-hadron families in the Tien Shan X-ray emulsion chamber did preferably originate from interaction of the light cosmic ray nuclei,…
The diffuse $γ$-ray emission was measured up to $957$ TeV by the Tibet-AS$γ$ experiment recently. Assuming that it is produced by the hadronic interaction between cosmic ray nuclei and the interstellar medium, it requires that the cosmic ray nuclei should be accelerated well beyond PeV energies. Measurements of the cosmic ray spectra for different species show diverse results at present. The Tibet experiments showed that the spectrum of proton plus helium has an early knee below PeV. If this is correct, the diffuse $γ$-ray emission would suggest an additional component of Galactic cosmic rays …
The mixed Hydrogen and Helium (H + He) spectrum with a clear steepening at $\sim 700$ TeV has been detected by ARGO-YBJ experiments. In this paper, we demonstrate that the observed H + He spectrum can be well reproduced with the model of cosmic rays escaping from the supernova remnants (SNRs) in our Galaxy. In this model, particles are accelerated in a SNR through a non-linear diffusive shock acceleration mechanism and three components of high energy light nuclei escaped from the SNR are considered. It should be noted that the proton spectrum observed by KASCADE can be also explained by this m…
IceCube has detected a cumulative flux of PeV neutrinos, which origin is unknown. Blazars, active galactic nuclei with relativistic jets pointing to us, are long and widely expected to be one of the strong candidates of high energy neutrino sources. The neutrino production depends strongly on the cosmic ray power of blazar jets, which is largely unknown. The recent null results in stacking searches of neutrinos for several blazar samples by IceCube put upper limits on the neutrino fluxes from these blazars. Here we compute the cosmic ray power and PeV neutrino flux of Fermi-LAT blazars, and fi…
Three regions of excessive flux of cosmic rays with energies of the order of PeV are found in the experimental data of the EAS MSU array at a confidence level greater than 4σ. For two of them, there are similar regions in the experimental data of the EAS-1000 Prototype array. One of the interesting features of the regions is the absence of supernova remnants in their vicinities, traditionally considered as the main sources of Galactic cosmic rays, but the presence of isolated pulsars, some of which are able to accelerate heavy nuclei up to energies close to PeV. In our opinion, this favors the…
We argue that the excess of sub-PeV/PeV neutrinos recently reported by IceCube could plausibly originate through pion-production processes in the same sources responsible for cosmic rays (CRs) with energy above the second knee around $10^{18}\,$eV. The pion production efficiency for escaping CRs that produce PeV neutrinos is required to be $\gtrsim 0.1$ in such sources. On the basis of current data, we identify semi-relativistic hypernova remants as possible sources that satisfy the requirements. By virtue of their fast ejecta, such objects can accelerate protons to EeV energies, which in turn…
UHECR (Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays) were expected to be protons, to fly straight and to suffer from a GZK (opacity on CMB radiation) cut off. AUGER suggested in 2007 that such early UHECR anisotropy was compatible with the foreseen Super-Galactic plane, while both HIRES and AUGER confirmed this apparent GZK cut-off in the spectra. However, the same AUGER composition since 2007 had favored nuclei (and not nucleons). The recent absence of narrow angle clustering in UHECR maps, as it should be expected for protons, the missing of events along the nearest Cluster Virgo, the wide spread (nearly 1…
Archival EAS-MSU data are searched for anomalous muonless events which may be caused by primary gamma rays with energies between 10^15 eV and 10^18 eV. We consider a refined sample of high-quality data and confirm the previously reported detection of a non-zero gamma-ray flux at ~5x10^16 eV with a similar flux value but at somewhat lower statistical significance, corresponding to the depletion of the sample. We present upper limits on the flux below and above these energies, including the first constraints in the range (10^17-10^18) eV never studied by any other experiment.
Primary energy spectral models are tested in the energy range of 1-200 PeV using standardized extensive air shower responses from BASJE-MAS, Tibet, GAMMA and KASCADE scintillation shower arrays. Results point towards the two-component origin of observed cosmic ray energy spectra in the knee region (GAPS spectral model) consisting of a pulsar component superimposed upon rigidity-dependent power law diffuse galactic flux. The two-component energy spectral model accounts for both the sharp knee shower spectral phenomenon and observed irregularity of all-particle energy spectrum in the region of 5…
New data on the absolute value on the inelastic proton-air cross section at 10 PeV are presented. Conclusion is made about the growth with energy of the inelastic proton-air cross section according to comparisons with experimental data were obtained at the Tien Shan complex array on various components of extensive air showers: hadrons, Cherenkov light and electrons with many different calculated models of cosmic rays interactions at the atmosphere. The analysis showed that the rise conforms to 7-9 % per one order of the energy from 0.2 TeV (accelerators with fixed targets) to 10 PeV (EAS cosmi…
The study of cosmic ray anisotropy in the TeV-PeV energy range could provide clues about the origin and propagation of cosmic rays in our galactic neighborhood. Because the observed anisotropy is very small, below the per-mille level, large event volumes are needed in order to characterize it in sufficient detail. Over the last six years, the IceCube Observatory has collected 150 billion cosmic ray induced muon events. This large data sample made it possible to detect anisotropies in the southern hemisphere, down to the 10$^{-5}$ level, at primary energies in excess of 10 TeV. The observed ani…
Experimental data from the Tien Shan complex array on different components of extensive air showers at 0.5-10 PeV primary cosmic rays are compared with results of various calculated models of cosmic rays interactions at the atmosphere. Conclusion is made about the growth with energy of the inelastic proton-air cross section σp-air from 0.2 TeV (accelerator experiments with fixed targets) to 10 PeV (cosmic rays). The analysis showed that the rise conforms to (7-9)% per one order of energy. That corresponds to σp-air (1 PeV) = 350 mb. These data correspond better to the new QGSJET-II-04 version …

Detecting TeV--PeV cosmic neutrinos provides crucial tests of neutrino physics and astrophysics. The statistics of IceCube and the larger proposed IceCube-Gen2 demand calculations of neutrino-nucleus interactions subdominant to deep-inelastic scattering, which is mediated by weak-boson couplings to nuclei. The largest such interactions are W-boson and trident production, which are mediated instead through photon couplings to nuclei. In a companion paper [1], we make the most comprehensive and precise calculations of those interactions at high energies. In this paper, we study their phenomenolo…
In this research, the simulation of lateral distribution function (LDF) of Cherenkov radiation was performed using CORSIKA software for two hadronic models QGSJET and GHEISHA. This simulation was performed for several elementary particles such as protons, iron nuclei, electrons and gamma quanta, in the range of energies 1-20 PeV for three zenith angles 0, 20 and 30 degrees. A parameterization of Cherenkov light LDF was performed for that simulated curves using Lorentzian function. The comparison between the obtained results for LDF of Cherenkov light with that measured with Yakutsk EAS array g…
We study high-energy neutrino production in inner jets of radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN), taking into account effects of external photon fields and the blazar sequence. We show that the resulting diffuse neutrino intensity is dominated by quasar-hosted blazars, in particular, flat spectrum radio quasars, and that PeV-EeV neutrino production due to photohadronic interactions with broadline and dust radiation is unavoidable if the AGN inner jets are ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray (UHECR) sources. Their neutrino spectrum has a cutoff feature around PeV energies since target photons are due …
We report on measurements of the all-particle cosmic ray energy spectrum and composition in the PeV to EeV energy range using three years of data from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. The IceTop detector measures cosmic ray induced air showers on the surface of the ice, from which the energy spectrum of cosmic rays is determined by making additional assumptions about the mass composition. A separate measurement is performed when IceTop data are analyzed in coincidence with the high-energy muon energy loss information from the deep in-ice IceCube detector. In this measurement, both the spectru…
UHECR mystery survived first Auger claims of AGN connection within a GZK (100 Mpc size) Universe. Last 2010 UHECR maps and compositions do show a much lower correlation with AGN SuperGalactic maps and with protons (the two main ingredient of that claim). The three main AUGER results that survived are: an embarrassing absence of Virgo cluster UHECR, somehow an expected signal; a steady presence of Cen-A clustering and a remarkable signature of nuclei (not nucleon) composition. We claim that the He-like lightest nuclei may solve most of the puzzle: He UHECR cannot arrive from Virgo because light…
In nuclei of starburst galaxies, the combination of an enhanced rate of supernova explosions and a high gas density suggests that cosmic rays can be efficiently produced, and that most of them lose their energy before escaping these regions, resulting in a large flux of secondary products, including neutrinos. Although the flux inferred from an individual starburst region is expected to be well below the sensitivity of current neutrino telescopes, such sources may provide a substantial contribution to the diffuse neutrino flux measured by IceCube. Here we compute the gamma-ray and neutrino flu…
We propose an interpretation of the two neutrino initiated cascade events with PeV energies observed by IceCube: Ultra-high energy cosmic ray protons (or Fe nuclei) scatter on CMB photons through the Delta-resonance (the Berezinsky-Zatsepin process) yielding charged pions and neutrons. The neutron decays give electron-antineutrinos which undergo neutrino oscillations to populate all antineutrino flavors, but the electron-antineutrino flux remains dominant. At 6.3 PeV electron-antineutrino energy their annihilation on electrons in the IceCube detector is enhanced by the Glashow resonance (the W…
The interaction of high energy cosmic rays with the Earth's atmosphere produces extensive air showers of secondary particles with a large muon component. By exploiting the sensitivity of neutrino telescopes to high energy muons, it is possible to use these detectors for precision cosmic ray studies. The high rate of cosmic-ray muon events provides a high-statistics data sample that can be used to look for anisotropy in the arrival directions of the parent particles at the per-mille level. This paper reports on the observation of anisotropy in the cosmic ray data collected with the IceCube neut…
We study the survival of ultrahigh energy nuclei injected in clusters of galaxies, as well as their secondary neutrino and photon emissions, using a complete numerical propagation method and a realistic modeling of the magnetic, baryonic and photonic backgrounds. It is found that the survival of heavy nuclei highly depends on the injection position and on the profile of the magnetic field. Taking into account the limited lifetime of the central source could also lead in some cases to the detection of a cosmic ray afterglow, temporally decorrelated from neutrino and gamma ray emissions. We calc…
The photo-disintegration of cosmic ray nuclei by starlight leads to the production of secondary antineutrinos. We have assumed that the flux of the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray nuclei near the Galactic plane region is the same as that observed near the earth and calculated the antineutrino flux produced from their photo-disintegration. The IceCube detector has measured the neutrino/antineutrino flux in the TeV-PeV energy range. Our calculated secondary antineutrino flux in the energy range of 10-100 TeV is found to be much less compared to the flux detected by the IceCube collaboration. The upp…
The TRACER cosmic-ray detector, first flown on long-duration balloon (LDB) in 2003 for observations of the major primary cosmic-ray nuclei from oxygen (Z=8) to iron (Z=26), has been upgraded to also measure the energies of the lighter nuclei, including the secondary species boron (Z=5). The instrument was used in another LDB flight in 2006. The properties and performance of the modified detector system are described, and the analysis of the data from the 2006 flight is discussed. The energy spectra of the primary nuclei carbon (Z=6), oxygen, and iron over the range from 1 GeV amu$^{-1}$ to 2 T…
We demonstrate that supernova remnant (SNR) shocks embedded within massive star clusters can reproduce both the cosmic-ray proton and all-particle spectra measured in the vicinity of the Earth up to hundreds of peta-electronvolts (PeV). We model two classes of massive star clusters. The first population are "loose clusters" which do not power a collective wind termination shock. SNR shocks then expand in a low-density and weakly magnetised medium, and this population mainly contributes up to the "knee" of the CR spectrum around 1 PeV. The second population are young compact clusters, which are…
Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory(LHAASO) is a composite cosmic ray observatory consisting of three detector arrays: kilometer square array (KM2A) which includes the electromagnetic detector array and muon detector array, water Cherenkov detector array (WCDA) and wide field of view Cherenkov telescope array (WFCTA). One of the main scientific objectives of LHAASO is to precisely measure the cosmic rays energy spectrum of individual components from 1014 eV to 1018 eV. The hybrid observation will be employed by LHAASO experiment, in which the lateral and longitudinal distributions of th…
We discuss the possibility that the PeV neutrinos recently observed by IceCube are produced by the interactions of extragalactic cosmic rays during their propagation through the radiation backgrounds. We show that the fluxes resulting from the decays of neutrons produced in the interactions of cosmic ray protons with the CMB background are suppressed ($E_ν^2$d$Φ_ν/$d$E< 10^{-10}$ GeV/cm$^2$ s sr), with those resulting from the decays of pions produced in the interactions with the UV/optical/IR backgrounds being the dominant ones at PeV energies. The anti-neutrino fluxes produced by the decay o…

Spectra of Cosmic Rays (CRs), particularly their features, may hold essential information about astroparticle and fundamental physics. Realizing that both $4$ PeV CR knee and electron's TeV break have nearly identical Lorentz factor, i.e. $γ\sim 10^6$, we propose that both CR nuclei and electron experience a threshold interaction with unknown light particle $\rm X$, widespread in the diffusive halo. The interaction occurs only when the Lorentz factor of CRs is larger than $10^6$. Via this process, the energy spectrum of each component has deformation above the threshold Lorentz factor, so both…
IceTop, the surface array of IceCube, measures air showers from cosmic rays within the energy range of 1 PeV to a few EeV and a zenith angle range of up to $\approx$ 36$^\circ$. This detector array can also measure air showers arriving at larger zenith angles at energies above 20 PeV. Air showers from lighter primaries arriving at the array will produce fewer muons when compared to heavier cosmic-ray primaries. A discrimination of these muons from the electromagnetic component in the shower can therefore allow a measurement of the primary mass. A study to discriminate muons using Monte-Carlo a…
Nonmonotonic change with energy of the mean logarithmic mass of cosmic rays in the knee region: the mechanism of formation of this feature and sources of particles
The final results of processing the data from the balloon-born experiment ATIC-2 (Antarctica, 2002-2003) for the energy spectra of protons and He, C, O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe nuclei, the spectrum of all particles, and the mean logarithm of atomic weight of primary cosmic rays as a function of energy are presented. The final results are based on improvement of the methods used earlier, in particular, considerably increased resolution of the charge spectrum. The preliminary conclusions on the significant difference in the spectra of protons and helium nuclei (the proton spectrum is steeper) and the…
Observations of TeV--PeV-energy cosmic neutrinos by the IceCube observatory have suggested that extragalactic cosmic-ray sources should have an optical depth greater than $\sim$0.01 and contribute to more than 10\% of the observed bulk of cosmic rays at 10 PeV. If the spectrum of cosmic rays from these extragalactic sources extends well beyond 1 EeV, the neutrino flux indicates that extragalactic cosmic-ray protons are dominant in the observed total cosmic-ray flux at 1 EeV. Among known powerful astronomical objects, including gamma-ray bursters (GRBs), only flat-spectrum radio quasars could (…
