Electric power grids regularly experience uncertain fluctuations from load demands and renewables, which poses a risk of violating operational limits designed to safeguard the system. In this paper, we consider the robust AC OPF problem that minimizes the generation cost while requiring a certain level of system security in the presence of uncertainty. The robust AC OPF problem requires that the system satisfy operational limits for all uncertainty realizations within a specified uncertainty set. Guaranteeing robustness is particularly challenging due to the non-convex, nonlinear AC power flow equations, which may not always have a solution. In this work, we extend a previously developed convex restriction to a robust convex restriction, which is a convex inner approximation of the non-convex feasible region of the AC OPF problem that accounts for uncertainty in the power injections. We then use the robust convex restriction in an algorithm that obtains robust solutions to AC OPF problems by solving a sequence of convex optimization problems. We demonstrate our algorithm and its ability to control robustness versus operating cost trade-offs using PGLib test cases.
The convex restriction of the power flow feasible sets identifies the convex subset of power injections where the solution for power flow is guaranteed to exist and satisfy the operational constraints. In contrast to convex relaxations, the convex restriction provides a sufficient condition for power flow feasibility and is particularly useful for problems involving uncertainty in the power generation and demand. In this paper, we present a general framework of constructing convex restriction of an algebraic set defined by equality and inequality constraints and apply the framework to power fl…
We consider strongly convex optimization problems with affine-type restrictions. We build dual problem and solve dual problem by Fast Gradient Method. We use primal-dual structure of this method to construct the solution of the primal problem. The paper contain a lot of different tricks that allows to generalize mentioned above results for almost all methods we would like to choose to solve the dual problem.
This paper presents a convex sufficient condition for solving a system of nonlinear equations under parametric changes and proposes a sequential convex optimization method for solving robust optimization problems with nonlinear equality constraints. By bounding the nonlinearity with concave envelopes and using Brouwer's fixed point theorem, the sufficient condition is expressed in terms of closed-form convex inequality constraints. We extend the result to provide a convex sufficient condition for feasibility under bounded uncertainty. Using these conditions, a non-convex optimization problem c…
We present an algorithm for robust model predictive control with consideration of uncertainty and safety constraints. Our framework considers a nonlinear dynamical system subject to disturbances from an unknown but bounded uncertainty set. By viewing the system as a fixed point of an operator acting over trajectories, we propose a convex condition on control actions that guarantee safety against the uncertainty set. The proposed condition guarantees that all realizations of the state trajectories satisfy safety constraints. Our algorithm solves a sequence of convex quadratic constrained optimi…
Nonconvexity induced by the nonlinear AC power flow equations challenges solution algorithms for AC optimal power flow (OPF) problems. While significant research efforts have focused on reliably computing high-quality OPF solutions, it is not always clear that there exists a feasible path to reach the desired operating point. Transitioning between operating points while avoiding constraint violations can be challenging since the feasible space of the OPF problem is nonconvex and potentially disconnected. To address this problem, we propose an algorithm that computes a provably feasible path fr…
The $ε$-subdifferential of convex univariate piecewise linear-quadratic functions can be computed in linear worst-case time complexity as the level-set of a convex function. Using dichotomic search, we show how the computation can be performed in logarithmic worst-case time. Furthermore, a new algorithm to compute the entire graph of the $ε$-subdifferential in linear time is presented. Both algorithms are not limited to convex PLQ functions but are also applicable to any convex piecewise-defined function with little restrictions.
One revisits the standard saddle-point method based on conjugate duality for solving convex minimization problems. Our aim is to reduce or remove unnecessary topological restrictions on the constraint set. Dual equalities and characterizations of the minimizers are obtained with weak or without constraint qualifications. The main idea is to work with intrinsic topologies which reflect some geometry of the objective function. The abstract results of this article are applied in other papers to the Monge-Kantorovich optimal transport problem and the minimization of entropy functionals.
This paper studies robust solutions and semidefinite linear programming (SDP) relaxations of a class of convex polynomial programs in the face of data uncertainty. The class of convex programs, called robust SOS-convex programs, includes robust quadratically constrained convex programs and robust separable convex polynomial programs. It establishes sums of squares polynomial representations characterizing robust solutions and exact SDP-relaxations of robust SOS-convex programs under various commonly used uncertainty sets. In particular, the results show that the polytopic and ellipsoidal uncer…
We describe general heuristics to approximately solve a wide variety of problems with convex objective and decision variables from a nonconvex set. The heuristics, which employ convex relaxations, convex restrictions, local neighbor search methods, and the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), require the solution of a modest number of convex problems, and are meant to apply to general problems, without much tuning. We describe an implementation of these methods in a package called NCVX, as an extension of CVXPY, a Python package for formulating and solving convex optimization pr…
This paper introduces the Runge-Kutta Chebyshev descent method (RKCD) for strongly convex optimisation problems. This new algorithm is based on explicit stabilised integrators for stiff differential equations, a powerful class of numerical schemes that avoid the severe step size restriction faced by standard explicit integrators. For optimising quadratic and strongly convex functions, this paper proves that RKCD nearly achieves the optimal convergence rate of the conjugate gradient algorithm, and the suboptimality of RKCD diminishes as the condition number of the quadratic function worsens. It…
We provide convex necessary and sufficient conditions for the robust stability of linear positively dominated systems. In particular we show that the structured singular value is always equal to its convex upper bound for nonnegative matrices and we use this result to derive necessary and sufficient Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) conditions for robust stability that involve only the system's static gain. We show how this approach can be applied to test the robust stability of the Foschini-Miljanic algorithm for power control in wireless networks in presence of uncertain interference.
In this paper, we introduce a new class of nonsmooth convex functions called SOS-convex semialgebraic functions extending the recently proposed notion of SOS-convex polynomials. This class of nonsmooth convex functions covers many common nonsmooth functions arising in the applications such as the Euclidean norm, the maximum eigenvalue function and the least squares functions with $\ell_1$-regularization or elastic net regularization used in statistics and compressed sensing. We show that, under commonly used strict feasibility conditions, the optimal value and an optimal solution of SOS-convex…
This paper considers a class of generalized convex games where each player is associated with a convex objective function, a convex inequality constraint and a convex constraint set. The players aim to compute a Nash equilibrium through communicating with neighboring players. The particular challenge we consider is that the component functions are unknown a priori to associated players. We study two distributed computation algorithms and analyze their convergence properties in the presence of data transmission delays and dynamic changes of network topologies. The algorithm performance is verif…
The robust truss topology optimization against the uncertain static external load can be formulated as mixed-integer semidefinite programming. Although a global optimal solution can be computed with a branch-and-bound method, it is very time-consuming. This paper presents an alternative formulation, semidefinite programming with complementarity constraints, and proposes an efficient heuristic. The proposed method is based upon the convex-concave procedure for DC (difference-of-convex) programming. It is shown that the method can often find a practically reasonable truss design within the compu…
We investigate robust optimization problems defined for maximizing convex functions. For finite uncertainty set, we develop a geometric branch-and-bound algorithmic approach to solve this problem. The geometric branch-and-bound algorithm performs sequential piecewise-linear approximations of the convex objective, and solves linear programs to determine lower and upper bounds of nodes specified by the active linear pieces. Finite convergence of the algorithm to an $ε-$optimal solution is proved. Numerical results are used to discuss the performance of the developed algorithm. The algorithm deve…
In this paper, probabilistic guarantees for constraint sampling of multistage robust convex optimization problems are derived. The dynamic nature of these problems is tackled via the so-called scenario-with-certificates approach. This allows to avoid the conservative use of explicit parametrizations through decision rules, and provides a significant reduction of the sample complexity to satisfy a given level of reliability. An explicit bound on the probability of violation is also given. Numerical results dealing with a multistage inventory management problem show the efficacy of the proposed …
We address the problem of designing optimal linear time-invariant (LTI) sparse controllers for LTI systems, which corresponds to minimizing a norm of the closed-loop system subject to sparsity constraints on the controller structure. This problem is NP-hard in general and motivates the development of tractable approximations. We characterize a class of convex restrictions based on a new notion of Sparsity Invariance (SI). The underlying idea of SI is to design sparsity patterns for transfer matrices Y(s) and X(s) such that any corresponding controller K(s)=Y(s)X(s)^-1 exhibits the desired spar…
We are interested in the optimization of convex domains under a PDE constraint. Due to the difficulties of approximating convex domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$, the restriction to rotationally symmetric domains is used to reduce shape optimization problems to a two-dimensional setting. For the optimization of an eigenvalue arising in a problem of optimal insulation, the existence of an optimal domain is proven. An algorithm is proposed that can be applied to general shape optimization problems under the geometric constraints of convexity and rotational symmetry. The approximated optimal domains for …
For the two sixth-order polynomials $a(s)$ and $b(s),$ Hurwitz stability of their convex combination is necessary and sufficient for the existence of a polynomial $c(s)$ such that $c(s)/a(s)$ and $c(s)/b(s)$ are both strictly positive real. Our reasoning method is constructive, and is insightful and helpful in solving the general robust strictly positive real synthesis problem.
We present a general method, based on conjugate duality, for solving a convex minimization problem without assuming unnecessary topological restrictions on the constraint set. It leads to dual equalities and characterizations of the minimizers without constraint qualification. As an example of application, the Monge-Kantorovich optimal transport problem is solved in great detail. In particular, the optimal transport plans are characterized without restriction. This characterization improves the already existing literature on the subject.
In this paper a class of robust two-stage combinatorial optimization problems is discussed. It is assumed that the uncertain second stage costs are specified in the form of a convex uncertainty set, in particular polyhedral or ellipsoidal ones. It is shown that the robust two-stage versions of basic network and selection problems are NP-hard, even in a very restrictive cases. Some exact and approximation algorithms for the general problem are constructed. Polynomial and approximation algorithms for the robust two-stage versions of basic problems, such as the selection and shortest path problem…
The H2 guaranteed cost decentralized control problem is investigated in this work. More specifically, on the basis of an appropriate H2 re-formulation that we put in place, the optimal control problem in the presence of parameter uncertainties is then suitably characterized by convex restriction and solved in parameter space. It is shown that a set of stabilizing decentralized controller gains for the uncertain system is parameterized in a convex set through appropriate convex restriction, and then an approximated conic optimization problem is constructed. This facilitates the use of the symme…
We consider a distributionally robust formulation of stochastic optimization problems arising in statistical learning, where robustness is with respect to uncertainty in the underlying data distribution. Our formulation builds on risk-averse optimization techniques and the theory of coherent risk measures. It uses semi-deviation risk for quantifying uncertainty, allowing us to compute solutions that are robust against perturbations in the population data distribution. We consider a large family of loss functions that can be non-convex and non-smooth and develop an efficient stochastic subgradi…

Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are a class of nonlinear dynamical systems often used to model sequence-to-sequence maps. RNNs have excellent expressive power but lack the stability or robustness guarantees that are necessary for many applications. In this paper, we formulate convex sets of RNNs with stability and robustness guarantees. The guarantees are derived using incremental quadratic constraints and can ensure global exponential stability of all solutions, and bounds on incremental $ \ell_2 $ gain (the Lipschitz constant of the learned sequence-to-sequence mapping). Using an implicit m…
