Radar and lidar, provided by two different range sensors, each has pros and cons of various perception tasks on mobile robots or autonomous driving. In this paper, a Monte Carlo system is used to localize the robot with a rotating radar sensor on 2D lidar maps. We first train a conditional generative adversarial network to transfer raw radar data to lidar data, and achieve reliable radar points from generator. Then an efficient radar odometry is included in the Monte Carlo system. Combining the initial guess from odometry, a measurement model is proposed to match the radar data and prior lidar maps for final 2D positioning. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed localization framework on the public multi-session dataset. The experimental results show that our system can achieve high accuracy for long-term localization in outdoor scenes.

Radar shows great potential for autonomous driving by accomplishing long-range sensing under diverse weather conditions. But radar is also a particularly challenging sensing modality due to the radar noises. Recent works have made enormous progress in classifying free and occupied spaces in radar images by leveraging lidar label supervision. However, there are still several unsolved issues. Firstly, the sensing distance of the results is limited by the sensing range of lidar. Secondly, the performance of the results is degenerated by lidar due to the physical sensing discrepancies between the …
Robust perception is an essential component to enable long-term operation of mobile robots. It depends on failure resilience through reliable sensor data and preprocessing, as well as failure awareness through introspection, for example the ability to self-assess localization performance. This paper presents CorAl: a principled, intuitive, and generalizable method to measure the quality of alignment between pairs of point clouds, which learns to detect alignment errors in a self-supervised manner. CorAl compares the differential entropy in the point clouds separately with the entropy in their …

Localization in the environment is an essential navigational capability for animals and mobile robots. In the indoor environment, the global localization problem remains challenging to be perfectly solved with probabilistic methods. However, animals are able to instinctively localize themselves with much less effort. Therefore, it is intriguing and promising to seek biological inspiration from animals. In this paper, we present a biologically-inspired global localization system using a LiDAR sensor that utilizes a hippocampal model and a landmark-based re-localization approach. The experiment …
Robust and accurate, map-based localization is crucial for autonomous mobile systems. In this paper, we exploit range images generated from 3D LiDAR scans to address the problem of localizing mobile robots or autonomous cars in a map of a large-scale outdoor environment represented by a triangular mesh. We use the Poisson surface reconstruction to generate the mesh-based map representation. Based on the range images generated from the current LiDAR scan and the synthetic rendered views from the mesh-based map, we propose a new observation model and integrate it into a Monte Carlo localization …
In this work we propose an alternative formulation to the problem of ground reflectivity grid based localization involving laser scanned data from multiple LIDARs mounted on autonomous vehicles. The driving idea of our localization formulation is an alternative edge reflectivity grid representation which is invariant to laser source, angle of incidence, range and robot surveying motion. Such property eliminates the need of the post-factory reflectivity calibration whose time requirements are infeasible in mass produced robots/vehicles. Our experiments demonstrate that we can achieve better per…

In this paper we present The Oxford Radar RobotCar Dataset, a new dataset for researching scene understanding using Millimetre-Wave FMCW scanning radar data. The target application is autonomous vehicles where this modality is robust to environmental conditions such as fog, rain, snow, or lens flare, which typically challenge other sensor modalities such as vision and LIDAR. The data were gathered in January 2019 over thirty-two traversals of a central Oxford route spanning a total of 280km of urban driving. It encompasses a variety of weather, traffic, and lighting conditions. This 4.7TB data…
Through constant improvements in recent years radar sensors have become a viable alternative to lidar as the main distancing sensor of an autonomous vehicle. Although robust and with the possibility to directly measure the radial velocity, it brings it's own set of challenges, for which existing algorithms need to be adapted. One core algorithm of a perception system is dynamic occupancy grid mapping, which has traditionally relied on lidar. In this paper we present a dual-weight particle filter as an extension for a Bayesian occupancy grid mapping framework to allow to operate it with radar a…
Localization is a crucial capability for mobile robots and autonomous cars. In this paper, we address learning an observation model for Monte-Carlo localization using 3D LiDAR data. We propose a novel, neural network-based observation model that computes the expected overlap of two 3D LiDAR scans. The model predicts the overlap and yaw angle offset between the current sensor reading and virtual frames generated from a pre-built map. We integrate this observation model into a Monte-Carlo localization framework and tested it on urban datasets collected with a car in different seasons. The experi…

Radar presents a promising alternative to lidar and vision in autonomous vehicle applications, able to detect objects at long range under a variety of weather conditions. However, distinguishing between occupied and free space from raw radar power returns is challenging due to complex interactions between sensor noise and occlusion. To counter this we propose to learn an Inverse Sensor Model (ISM) converting a raw radar scan to a grid map of occupancy probabilities using a deep neural network. Our network is self-supervised using partial occupancy labels generated by lidar, allowing a robot to…

Research on localization and perception for Autonomous Driving is mainly focused on camera and LiDAR datasets, rarely on radar data. Manually labeling sparse radar point clouds is challenging. For a dataset generation, we propose the cross sensor Radar Artifact Labeling Framework (RALF). Automatically generated labels for automotive radar data help to cure radar shortcomings like artifacts for the application of artificial intelligence. RALF provides plausibility labels for radar raw detections, distinguishing between artifacts and targets. The optical evaluation backbone consists of a general…

This paper presents a localization technique using aerial imagery maps and LIDAR based ground reflectivity for autonomous vehicles in urban environments. Traditional localization techniques using LIDAR reflectivity rely on high definition reflectivity maps generated from a mapping vehicle. The cost and effort required to maintain such prior maps are generally very high because it requires a fleet of expensive mapping vehicles. In this work we propose a localization technique where the vehicle localizes using aerial/satellite imagery, eradicating the need to develop and maintain complex high-de…

Highly automated driving functions currently often rely on a-priori knowledge from maps for planning and prediction in complex scenarios like cities. This makes map-relative localization an essential skill. In this paper, we address the problem of localization with automotive-grade radars, using a real-time graph-based SLAM approach. The system uses landmarks and odometry information as an abstraction layer. This way, besides radars, all kind of different sensor modalities including cameras and lidars can contribute. A single, semantic landmark map is used and maintained for all sensors. We im…
Vehicle localization in highway tunnels is a challenging issue for autonomous vehicle navigation. Since GPS signals from satellites cannot be received inside a highway tunnel, map-aided localization is essential. However, the environment around the tunnel is composed mostly of an elliptical wall. Thereby, the unique feature points for map matching are few unlike the case outdoors. As a result, it is a very difficult condition to perform vehicle navigation in the tunnel with existing map-aided localization. In this paper, we propose tunnel facility-based precise vehicle localization in highway …
Place recognition is critical for both offline mapping and online localization. However, current single-sensor based place recognition still remains challenging in adverse conditions. In this paper, a heterogeneous measurements based framework is proposed for long-term place recognition, which retrieves the query radar scans from the existing lidar maps. To achieve this, a deep neural network is built with joint training in the learning stage, and then in the testing stage, shared embeddings of radar and lidar are extracted for heterogeneous place recognition. To validate the effectiveness of …
- Both Lidars and Radars are sensors for obstacle detection. While Lidars are very accurate on obstacles positions and less accurate on their velocities, Radars are more precise on obstacles velocities and less precise on their positions. Sensor fusion between Lidar and Radar aims at improving obstacle detection using advantages of the two sensors. The present paper proposes a real-time Lidar/Radar data fusion algorithm for obstacle detection and tracking based on the global nearest neighbour standard filter (GNN). This algorithm is implemented and embedded in an automative vehicle as a compon…

We present a heterogeneous localization framework for solving radar global localization and pose tracking on pre-built lidar maps. To bridge the gap of sensing modalities, deep neural networks are constructed to create shared embedding space for radar scans and lidar maps. Herein learned feature embeddings are supportive for similarity measurement, thus improving map retrieval and data matching respectively. In RobotCar and MulRan datasets, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework with the comparison to Scan Context and RaLL. In addition, the proposed pose tracking pipeline i…
