Citation sentimet analysis is one of the little studied tasks for scientometric analysis. For citation analysis, we developed eight datasets comprising citation sentences, which are manually annotated by us into three sentiment polarities viz. positive, negative, and neutral. Among eight datasets, three were developed by considering the whole context of citations. Furthermore, we proposed an ensembled feature engineering method comprising word embeddings obtained for texts, parts-of-speech tags, and dependency relationships together. Ensembled features were considered as input to deep learning based approaches for citation sentiment classification, which is in turn compared with Bag-of-Words approach. Experimental results demonstrate that deep learning is useful for higher number of samples, whereas support vector machine is the winner for smaller number of samples. Moreover, context-based samples are proved to be more effective than context-less samples for citation sentiment analysis.

Whenever human beings interact with each other, they exchange or express opinions, emotions, and sentiments. These opinions can be expressed in text, speech or images. Analysis of these sentiments is one of the popular research areas of present day researchers. Sentiment analysis, also known as opinion mining tries to identify or classify these sentiments or opinions into two broad categories - positive and negative. In recent years, the scientific community has taken a lot of interest in analyzing sentiment in textual data available in various social media platforms. Much work has been done o…

Citation sentiment analysis is an important task in scientific paper analysis. Existing machine learning techniques for citation sentiment analysis are focusing on labor-intensive feature engineering, which requires large annotated corpus. As an automatic feature extraction tool, word2vec has been successfully applied to sentiment analysis of short texts. In this work, I conducted empirical research with the question: how well does word2vec work on the sentiment analysis of citations? The proposed method constructed sentence vectors (sent2vec) by averaging the word embeddings, which were learn…

Citations play a vital role in understanding the impact of scientific literature. Generally, citations are analyzed quantitatively whereas qualitative analysis of citations can reveal deeper insights into the impact of a scientific artifact in the community. Therefore, citation impact analysis (which includes sentiment and intent classification) enables us to quantify the quality of the citations which can eventually assist us in the estimation of ranking and impact. The contribution of this paper is two-fold. First, we benchmark the well-known language models like BERT and ALBERT along with s…

With the rapid growth in the number of scientific publications, year after year, it is becoming increasingly difficult to identify quality authoritative work on a single topic. Though there is an availability of scientometric measures which promise to offer a solution to this problem, these measures are mostly quantitative and rely, for instance, only on the number of times an article is cited. With this approach, it becomes irrelevant if an article is cited 10 times in a positive, negative or neutral way. In this context, it is quite important to study the qualitative aspect of a citation to …

At the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous countries worldwide sought to mobilize vaccination campaigns in an attempt to curb the spread and number of deaths caused by the virus. One avenue in which information regarding COVID vaccinations is propagated is that of scientific articles, which provide a certain level of credibility regarding this. Hence, this increases the probability that people who view these articles would get vaccinated if the articles convey a positive message on vaccinations and conversely decreases the probability of vaccinations if the articles convey a negative messa…

Mining financial text documents and understanding the sentiments of individual investors, institutions and markets is an important and challenging problem in the literature. Current approaches to mine sentiments from financial texts largely rely on domain specific dictionaries. However, dictionary based methods often fail to accurately predict the polarity of financial texts. This paper aims to improve the state-of-the-art and introduces a novel sentiment analysis approach that employs the concept of financial and non-financial performance indicators. It presents an association rule mining bas…
Metrics for measuring the citation sentiment changes were introduced. Citation sentiment changes can be observed from global citation sentiment sequences (GCSSs). With respect to a cited paper, the citation sentiment sequences were analysed across a collection of citing papers ordered by the published time. For analysing GCSSs, Eddy Dissipation Rate (EDR) was adopted, with the hypothesis that the GCSSs pattern differences can be spotted by EDR based method. Preliminary evidence showed that EDR based method holds the potential for analysing a publication's impact in a time series fashion.

This paper presents a corpus annotated for the task of direct-speech extraction in Croatian. The paper focuses on the annotation of the quotation, co-reference resolution, and sentiment annotation in SETimes news corpus in Croatian and on the analysis of its language-specific differences compared to English. From this, a list of the phenomena that require special attention when performing these annotations is derived. The generated corpus with quotation features annotations can be used for multiple tasks in the field of Natural Language Processing.

Can the analysis of the semantics of words used in the text of a scientific paper predict its future impact measured by citations? This study details examples of automated text classification that achieved 80% success rate in distinguishing between highly-cited and little-cited articles. Automated intelligent systems allow the identification of promising works that could become influential in the scientific community. The problems of quantifying the meaning of texts and representation of human language have been clear since the inception of Natural Language Processing. This paper presents a no…
We propose a summarization approach for scientific articles which takes advantage of citation-context and the document discourse model. While citations have been previously used in generating scientific summaries, they lack the related context from the referenced article and therefore do not accurately reflect the article's content. Our method overcomes the problem of inconsistency between the citation summary and the article's content by providing context for each citation. We also leverage the inherent scientific article's discourse for producing better summaries. We show that our proposed m…
Citation function and citation sentiment are two essential aspects of citation content analysis (CCA), which are useful for influence analysis, the recommendation of scientific publications. However, existing studies are mostly traditional machine learning methods, although deep learning techniques have also been explored, the improvement of the performance seems not significant due to insufficient training data, which brings difficulties to applications. In this paper, we propose to fine-tune pre-trained contextual embeddings ULMFiT, BERT, and XLNet for the task. Experiments on three public d…

Multidisciplinary cooperation is now common in research since social issues inevitably involve multiple disciplines. In research articles, reference information, especially citation content, is an important representation of communication among different disciplines. Analyzing the distribution characteristics of references from different disciplines in research articles is basic to detecting the sources of referred information and identifying contributions of different disciplines. This work takes articles in PLoS as the data and characterizes the references from different disciplines based on…

Recently introduced transformer-based article encoders (TAEs) designed to produce similar vector representations for mutually related scientific articles have demonstrated strong performance on benchmark datasets for scientific article recommendation. However, the existing benchmark datasets are predominantly focused on single domains and, in some cases, contain easy negatives in small candidate pools. Evaluating representations on such benchmarks might obscure the realistic performance of TAEs in setups with thousands of articles in candidate pools. In this work, we evaluate TAEs on large ben…

Quickly moving to a new area of research is painful for researchers due to the vast amount of scientific literature in each field of study. One possible way to overcome this problem is to summarize a scientific topic. In this paper, we propose a model of summarizing a single article, which can be further used to summarize an entire topic. Our model is based on analyzing others' viewpoint of the target article's contributions and the study of its citation summary network using a clustering approach.

\emph{Verifiability} is one of the core editing principles in Wikipedia, editors being encouraged to provide citations for the added content. For a Wikipedia article, determining the \emph{citation span} of a citation, i.e. what content is covered by a citation, is important as it helps decide for which content citations are still missing. We are the first to address the problem of determining the \emph{citation span} in Wikipedia articles. We approach this problem by classifying which textual fragments in an article are covered by a citation. We propose a sequence classification approach wher…
In this paper, we study the importance of context in predicting the citation worthiness of sentences in scholarly articles. We formulate this problem as a sequence labeling task solved using a hierarchical BiLSTM model. We contribute a new benchmark dataset containing over two million sentences and their corresponding labels. We preserve the sentence order in this dataset and perform document-level train/test splits, which importantly allows incorporating contextual information in the modeling process. We evaluate the proposed approach on three benchmark datasets. Our results quantify the bene…
Scientific article summarization is challenging: large, annotated corpora are not available, and the summary should ideally include the article's impacts on research community. This paper provides novel solutions to these two challenges. We 1) develop and release the first large-scale manually-annotated corpus for scientific papers (on computational linguistics) by enabling faster annotation, and 2) propose summarization methods that integrate the authors' original highlights (abstract) and the article's actual impacts on the community (citations), to create comprehensive, hybrid summaries. We…

Extensive research on target-dependent sentiment classification (TSC) has led to strong classification performances in domains where authors tend to explicitly express sentiment about specific entities or topics, such as in reviews or on social media. We investigate TSC in news articles, a much less researched domain, despite the importance of news as an essential information source in individual and societal decision making. This article introduces NewsTSC, a manually annotated dataset to explore TSC on news articles. Investigating characteristics of sentiment in news and contrasting them to …
In web era, since technology has revolutionized mankind life, plenty of data and information are published on the Internet each day. For instance, news agencies publish news on their websites all over the world. These raw data could be an important resource for knowledge extraction. These shared data contain emotions (i.e., positive, neutral or negative) toward various topics; therefore, sentimental content extraction could be a beneficial task in many aspects. Extracting the sentiment of news illustrates highly valuable information about the events over a period of time, the viewpoint of a me…

This paper describes our work on developing a new business sentiment index using daily newspaper articles. We adopt a recurrent neural network (RNN) with Gated Recurrent Units to predict the business sentiment of a given text. An RNN is initially trained on Economy Watchers Survey and then fine-tuned on news texts for domain adaptation. Also, a one-class support vector machine is applied to filter out texts deemed irrelevant to business sentiment. Moreover, we propose a simple approach to temporally analyzing how much and when any given factor influences the predicted business sentiment. The v…
