We construct a 2-equivalence $\mathfrak{CohTheory}^\text{op} \simeq \mathfrak{TypeSpaceFunc}$. Here $\mathfrak{CohTheory}$ is the 2-category of positive theories and $\mathfrak{TypeSpaceFunc}$ is the 2-category of type space functors. We give a precise definition of interpretations for positive logic, which will be the 1-cells in $\mathfrak{CohTheory}$. The 2-cells are definable homomorphisms. The 2-equivalence restricts to a duality of categories, making precise the philosophy that a theory is `the same' as the collection of its type spaces (i.e. its type space functor).
In characterising those functors that arise as type space functors, we find that they are specific instances of (coherent) hyperdoctrines. This connects two different schools of thought on the logical structure of a theory.
The key ingredient, the Deligne completeness theorem, arises from topos theory, where positive theories have been studied under the name of coherent theories.
We prove a strong conceptual completeness theorem (in the sense of Makkai) for the infinitary logic $\mathcal L_{ω_1ω}$: every countable $\mathcal L_{ω_1ω}$-theory can be canonically recovered from its standard Borel groupoid of countable models, up to a suitable syntactical notion of equivalence. This implies that given two theories $(\mathcal L, \mathcal T)$ and $(\mathcal L', \mathcal T')$ (in possibly different languages $\mathcal L, \mathcal L'$), every Borel functor $\mathsf{Mod}(\mathcal L', \mathcal T') \to \mathsf{Mod}(\mathcal L, \mathcal T)$ between the respective groupoids of count…
We introduce the notion of infinitary interpretation of structures. In general, an interpretation between structures induces a continuous homomorphism between their automorphism groups, and furthermore, it induces a functor between the categories of copies of each structure. We show that for the case of infinitary interpretation the reversals are also true: Every Baire-measurable homomorphism between the automorphism groups of two countable structures is induced by an infinitary interpretation, and every Baire-measurable functor between the set of copies of two countable structures is induced …
This paper is an attempt to solve the following problem: given a logic, how to turn it into a paraconsistent one? In other words, given a logic in which \emph{ex falso quodlibet} holds, how to convert it into a logic not satisfying this principle? We use a framework provided by category theory in order to define a category of consequence structures. Then, we propose a functor to transform a logic not able to deal with contradictions into a paraconsistent one. Moreover, we study the case of paraconsistentization of propositional classical logic.
Regular logic can be regarded as the internal language of regular categories, but the logic itself is generally not given a categorical treatment. In this paper, we understand the syntax and proof rules of regular logic in terms of the free regular category $\mathsf{FRg}(\mathrm{T})$ on a set $\mathrm{T}$. From this point of view, regular theories are certain monoidal 2-functors from a suitable 2-category of contexts---the 2-category of relations in $\mathsf{FRg}(\mathrm{T})$---to the 2-category of posets. Such functors assign to each context the set of formulas in that context, ordered by ent…
The Distributional Compositional Categorical (DisCoCat) model is a mathematical framework that provides compositional semantics for meanings of natural language sentences. It consists of a computational procedure for constructing meanings of sentences, given their grammatical structure in terms of compositional type-logic, and given the empirically derived meanings of their words. For the particular case that the meaning of words is modelled within a distributional vector space model, its experimental predictions, derived from real large scale data, have outperformed other empirically validate…
We establish a number of results which say, roughly, that interpretation functors preserve algebraic complexity. First we show that representation embeddings between categories of modules of finite-dimensional algebras induce embeddings of lattices of pp formulas and hence are non-decreasing on Krull-Gabriel dimension and uniserial dimension. A consequence is that the category of modules of any wild finite-dimensional algebra has width $\infty$ and hence, if the algebra is countable, there is a superdecomposable pure-injective representation. It is conjectured that a stronger result is true: t…
In 1933, Gödel introduced a provability interpretation of the propositional intuitionistic logic to establish a formalization for the BHK interpretation. He used the modal system, $\mathbf{S4}$, as a formalization of the intuitive concept of provability and then translated $\mathbf{IPC}$ to $\mathbf{S4}$. His work suggested the problem to find a concrete provability interpretation of the modal logic $\mathbf{S4}$. In this paper, we will try to answer this problem. In fact, we will generalize Solovay's provability interpretation of the modal logic $\mathbf{GL}$ to capture other modal logics suc…
We study the finitary version of the coalgebraic logic introduced by L. Moss. The syntax of this logic, which is introduced uniformly with respect to a coalgebraic type functor, required to preserve weak pullbacks, extends that of classical propositional logic with a so-called coalgebraic cover modality depending on the type functor. Its semantics is defined in terms of a categorically defined relation lifting operation. As the main contributions of our paper we introduce a derivation system, and prove that it provides a sound and complete axiomatization for the collection of coalgebraically v…
A notion of interpretation between arbitrary logics is introduced, and the poset Log of all logics ordered under interpretability is studied. It is shown that in Log infima of arbitrarily large sets exist, but binary suprema in general do not. On the other hand, the existence of suprema of sets of equivalential logics is established. The relations between Log and the lattice of interpretability types of varieties are investigated.
The Gödel translation provides an embedding of the intuitionistic logic $\mathsf{IPC}$ into the modal logic $\mathsf{Grz}$, which then embeds into the modal logic $\mathsf{GL}$ via the splitting translation. Combined with Solovay's theorem that $\mathsf{GL}$ is the modal logic of the provability predicate of Peano Arithmetic $\mathsf{PA}$, both $\mathsf{IPC}$ and $\mathsf{Grz}$ admit arithmetical interpretations. When attempting to 'lift' these results to the monadic extensions $\mathsf{MIPC}$, $\mathsf{MGrz}$, and $\mathsf{MGL}$ of these logics, the same techniques no longer work. Following a…
In this paper we consider transfinite provability logics where for each ordinal in some recursive well-order we have a corresponding modal provability operator. The modality [xi] will be interpreted as "provable in ACA_0 together with at most xi nested applications of the omega rule". We show how to formalize this in in second order number theory. Next we prove both soundness and completeness under this interpretation. We conclude by showing how one can lower the base theory ACA_0 to theories below RCA_0.
The usual modelling of the syllogisms of the Organon by a calculus of classes does not include relations. Aristotle may however have envisioned them in the first two books as the category of relatives, where he allowed them to compose with themselves. Composition is the main operation in combinatory logic, which therefore offers itself for a new kind of modelling. The resulting calculus includes also composition of predicates by logical connectives.
The BHK interpretation interprets propositional statements as descriptions of the world of proofs; a world which is hierarchical in nature. It consists of different layers of the concept of proof; the proofs, the proofs about proofs and so on. To describe this hierarchical world, one approach is the Russellian approach in which we use a typed language to reflect this hierarchical nature in the syntax level. In this case, since the connective responsible for this hierarchical behavior is implication, we will use a typed language equipped with a hierarchy of implications, $\{\rightarrow_n\}_{n=0…
We describe a general construction of finiteness spaces which subsumes the interpretations of all positive connectors of linear logic. We then show how to apply this construction to prove the existence of least fixpoints for particular functors in the category of finiteness spaces: these include the functors involved in a relational interpretation of lazy recursive algebraic datatypes along the lines of the coherence semantics of system T.
Intuitionistic epistemic logic introduces an epistemic operator, which reflects the intended BHK semantics of intuitionism, to intuitionistic logic. The fundamental assumption concerning intuitionistic knowledge and belief is that it is the product of verification. The BHK interpretation of intuitionistic logic has a precise formulation in the Logic of Proofs and its arithmetical semantics. We show here that this interpretation can be extended to the notion of verification upon which intuitionistic knowledge is based, thereby providing the systems of intuitionistic epistemic logic extended by …
This paper aims to give an epistemic interpretation to the tensor disjunction in dependence logic, through a rather surprising connection to the so-called weak disjunction in Medvedev's early work on intermediate logic under the Brouwer-Heyting-Kolmogorov (BHK)-interpretation. We expose this connection in the setting of inquisitive logic with tensor disjunction discussed by Ciardelli and Barbero (2019}, but from an epistemic perspective. More specifically, we translate the propositional formulae of inquisitive logic with tensor into modal formulae in a powerful epistemic language of "knowing h…
We present a calculus providing a Curry-Howard correspondence to classical logic represented in the sequent calculus with explicit structural rules, namely weakening and contraction. These structural rules introduce explicit erasure and duplication of terms, respectively. We present a type system for which we prove the type-preservation under reduction. A mutual relation with classical calculus featuring implicit structural rules has been studied in detail. From this analysis we derive strong normalisation property.
We give the logical description of a new kind of quantum measurement that is a reversible operation performed by an hypothetical insider observer, or, which is the same, a quantum measurement made in a quantum space background, like the fuzzy sphere. The result is that the non-contradiction and the excluded middle principles are both invalidated, leading to a paraconsistent, symmetric logic. Our conjecture is that, in this setting, one can develop the adequate logic of quantum computing. The role of standard quantum logic is then confined to describe the projective measurement scheme.
Let M be a transitive model of set theory. There is a canonical interpretation functor between the category of regular Hausdorff, continuous open images of Cech-complete spaces of M and the same category in V, preserving many concepts of topology, functional analysis, and dynamics. The functor can be further canonically extended to the category of Borel subspaces. This greatly simplifies and extends similar results of Fremlin.
Turing progressions arise by iteratedly adding consistency statements to a base theory. Different notions of consistency give rise to different Turing progressions. In this paper we present a logic that generates exactly all relations that hold between these different Turing progressions given a particular set of natural consistency notions. Thus, the presented logic is proven to arithmetically sound and complete for a natural interpretation, named the \emph{Formalized Turing progressions} (FTP) interpretation.
We examine the relationship between Dependence Logic and game logics. A variant of Dynamic Game Logic, called Transition Logic, is developed, and we show that its relationship with Dependence Logic is comparable to the one between First-Order Logic and Dynamic Game Logic discussed by van Benthem. This suggests a new perspective on the interpretation of Dependence Logic formulas, in terms of assertions about reachability in games of im- perfect information against Nature. We then capitalize on this intuition by developing expressively equivalent variants of Dependence Logic in which this interp…
Provability logic concerns the study of modality $\Box$ as provability in formal systems such as Peano arithmetic. Natural, albeit quite surprising, topological interpretation of provability logic has been found in the 1970's by Harold Simmons and Leo Esakia. They have observed that the dual $\Diamond$ modality, corresponding to consistency in the context of formal arithmetic, has all the basic properties of the topological derivative operator acting on a scattered space. The topic has become a long-term project for the Georgian school of logic led by Esakia, with occasional contributions from…
While belief functions may be seen formally as a generalization of probabilistic distributions, the question of the interactions between belief functions and probability is still an issue in practice. This question is difficult, since the contexts of use of these theory are notably different and the semantics behind these theories are not exactly the same. A prominent issue is increasingly regarded by the community, that is the management of the conflicting information. Recent works have introduced new rules for handling the conflict redistribution while combining belief functions. The notion …
We prove two completeness results, one for the extension of dependence logic by a monotone generalized quantifier Q with weak interpretation, weak in the meaning that the interpretation of Q varies with the structures. The second result considers the extension of dependence logic where Q is interpreted as "there exists uncountable many." Both of the axiomatizations are shown to be sound and complete for FO(Q) consequences.
Based on the Sheaf Logic approach to set theoretic forcing, a hierarchy of Quantum Variable Sets is constructed which generalizes and simplifies the analogous construction developed by Takeuti on boolean valued models of set theory. Over this model two alternative proofs of Takeuti's correspondence, between self adjoint operators and the real numbers of the model, are given. This approach results to be more constructive showing a direct relation with the Gelfand representation theorem, revealing also the importance of these results with respect to the interpretation of Quantum Mechanics in clo…
The common-sense view of reality is expressed logically in Boolean subset logic (each element is either definitely in or not in a subset, i.e., either definitely has or does not have a property). But quantum mechanics does not agree with this "properties all the way down" picture of micro-reality. Are there other coherent alternative views of reality? A logic of partitions, dual to the Boolean logic of subsets (partitions are dual to subsets), was recently developed along with a logical version of information theory. In view of the subset-partition duality, partition logic is the alternative t…
In this paper, we shall show that the following translation $I^M$ from the propositional fragment $\bf L_1$ of Leśniewski's ontology to modal logic $\bf KTB$ is sound: for any formula $ϕ$ and $ψ$ of $\bf L_1$, it is defined as \smallskip (M1) $I^M(ϕ\vee ψ)$ = $I^M(ϕ) \vee I^M(ψ),$ (M2) $I^M(\neg ϕ)$ = $\neg I^M(ϕ),$ (M3) $I^M(εab)$ = $\Diamond p_a \supset p_a . \wedge . \Box p_a \supset \Box p_b . \wedge . \Diamond p_b \supset p_a,$ \smallskip \noindent where $p_a$ and $p_b$ are propositional variables corresponding to the name variables $a$ and $b$, respectively. In the last section, we shall…
In this paper, we present an alternative interpretation of propositional inquisitive logic as an epistemic logic of knowing how. In our setting, an inquisitive logic formula $α$ being supported by a state is formalized as "knowing how to resolve $α$" (more colloquially, "knowing how $α$ is true") holds on the S5 epistemic model corresponding to the state. Based on this epistemic interpretation, we use a dynamic epistemic logic with both know-how and know-that operators to capture the epistemic information behind the innocent-looking connectives in inquisitive logic. We show that the set of val…
