We review classical results on holographic entanglement entropy utilizing the Hamilton-Jacobi approach. Possibility of using the entanglement entropy as a probe of confinement is shortly discussed in the context of lattice data.
We study the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of effective mechanical actions associated with holographic renormalization group flows when the field theory is put on the sphere and mass terms are turned on. Although the system is supersymmetric and it is described by a superpotential, Hamilton's characteristic function is not readily given by the superpotential when the boundary of AdS is curved. We propose a method to construct the solution as a series expansion in scalar field degrees of freedom. The coefficients are functions of the warp factor to be determined by a differential equation one obt…
A systematic procedure for performing holographic renormalization, which makes use of the Hamilton-Jacobi method, is proposed and applied to a bulk theory of gravity interacting with a scalar field and a U(1) gauge field in the Stueckelberg formalism. We describe how the power divergences are obtained as solutions of a set of "descent equations" stemming from the radial Hamiltonian constraint of the theory. In addition, we isolate the logarithmic divergences, which are closely related to anomalies. The method allows to determine also the exact one-point functions of the dual field theory. Usin…
In AdS/CFT corresponding, the UV divergence of generating functional on the field theory can be removed as the IR divergence in the gravity. This geometric process is well known as holographic renormalization. The standard method of holographic renormalization is based on the Fefferman-Graham expansion, which is strict and universal but technically cumbersome. To improve the technique, different methods have been proposed. Here we develop an alternative approach to holographic renormalization based on the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of gravity. Compared to previous approaches, its distinguishi…
The Hamilton-Jacobi method in holography has produced important results both at a renormalization group (RG) fixed point and away from it. In this paper we use the Hamilton-Jacobi method to compute the holographic trace anomaly for four- and six-dimensional boundary conformal field theories (CFTs), assuming higher-derivative gravity and interactions of scalar fields in the bulk. The scalar field contributions to the anomaly appear in CFTs with exactly marginal operators. Moving away from the fixed point, we show that the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism provides a deep connection between the holograp…
We review holographic renormalization for non-conformal branes using the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism. We provide the tools required for the computation of the holographic dictionary, while we present some marginally new technical results regarding holographic renormalization for $Dp$-branes, $p<5$, for Einstein-Maxwell theory coupled to a dilaton. The computations are based on a recursive algorithm by Papadimitriou, that solves the radial Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the asymptotic boundary of the bulk. This paper is a short version of the Master thesis of the author written in 2014 at the Instit…
The minimal area for surfaces whose border are rectangular and circular loops are calculated using the Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) equation. This amounts to solve the HJ equation for the value of the minimal area, without calculating the shape of the corresponding surface. This is done for bulk geometries that are asymptotically AdS. For the rectangular countour, the HJ equation, which is separable, can be solved exactly. For the circular countour an expansion in powers of the radius is implemented. The HJ approach naturally leads to a regularization which consists in locating the countour away from …
Recently, a practical approach to holographic renormalization has been developed based on the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation. Using a simple Einstein-scalar theory, we clarify that this approach does not conflict with the Hamiltonian constraint as it seems. Then we apply it to the holographic renormalization of massive gravity. We assume that the shift vector is falling off fast enough asymptotically. We derive the counterterms up to the boundary dimension d=4. Interestingly, we find that the conformal anomaly can even occur in odd dimensions, which is different from the Einstein gravity. We chec…
The equivalence of the chain method and Hamilton-Jacobi formalism is demonstrated. The stabilization algorithm of Hamilton-Jacobi formalism is clariffied and two examples are presented in details.
We revisit the subject of holographic renormalization for asymptotically AdS spacetimes. For many applications of holography, one has to handle the divergences associated with the on-shell gravitational action. The brute force approach uses the Fefferman-Graham (FG) expansion near the AdS boundary to identify the divergences, but subsequent reversal of the expansion is needed to construct the infinite counterterms. While in principle straightforward, the method is cumbersome and application/reversal of FG is formally unsatisfactory. Various authors have proposed an alternative method based on …
The nontrivial transformation of the phase space path integral measure under certain discretized analogues of canonical transformations is computed. This Jacobian is used to derive a quantum analogue of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the generating function of a canonical transformation that maps any quantum system to a system with a vanishing Hamiltonian. A formal perturbative solution of the quantum Hamilton-Jacobi equation is given.
The Hamilton-Jacobi formalism was applied to quantize the front-form Schwinger model. The importance of the surface term is discussed in detail. The BRST-anti-BRST symmetry was analyzed within Hamilton-Jacobi formalism.
Systems invariant under the reparametrization of time were treated as constrained systems within Hamilton-Jacobi formalism. After imposing the integrability conditions the time-dependent Schrödinger equation was obtained. Three examples are investigated in details.
Metafluid dynamics was investigated within Hamilton-Jacobi formalism and the existence of the hidden gauge symmetry was analyzed. The obtained results are in agreement with those of Faddeev-Jackiw approach.
We derive a general expression for obtaining Holographic subregion complexity for asymptotically $AdS$ spacetimes, pertubatively around pure $AdS$ using a variational technique. An essential step in finding subregion complexity is to identify the bulk minimal surface of the entangling subregion. Our method therefore heavily relies on solutions of an inhomogeneous version of Jacobi equation, used to study deformations of the entangling surface for perturbations of the bulk metric. Using this method we have obtained the change in complexity for a strip and a circular disk like subsystem for \emp…
Simple derivation of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for bosonic strings and p-branes is given. The motion of classical strings and p-branes is described by two and p+1 local fields, respectively. A variety of local field equations which reduce to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the classical limit are given. They are essentially nonlinear, having no linear term.
We connect Quantum Hamilton-Jacobi Theory with supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSYQM). We show that the shape invariance, which is an integrability condition of SUSYQM, translates into fractional linear relations among the quantum momentum functions.
We generalize the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation for higher order singular systems and obtain the equations of motion as total differential equations. To do this we first study the constraint structure present in such systems.
The O(3) non-linear sigma model is investigated using multi Hamilton-Jacobi formalism. The integrability conditions are investigated and the results are in agreement with those obtained by Dirac's method. By choosing an adequate extension of phase space we describe the transformed system by a set of three Hamilton-Jacobi equations and calculate the corresponding action.
In this paper we develop a fractional Hamilton-Jacobi formulation for discrete systems in terms of fractional Caputo derivatives. The fractional action function is obtained and the solutions of the equations of motion are recovered. An example is studied in details.
The non-abelian Chern-Simons field interacting with $N$ component complex field is treated as a constrained system using the Hamilton-Jacobi approach. The reduced phase space Hamiltonian density is obtained without introducing Lagrange multipliers and with out any additional gauge fixing condition. The quantization of this system is also discussed.
In this paper, constrained Hamiltonian systems with linear velocities are investigated by using the Hamilton-Jacobi method. We shall consider the integrablity conditions on the equations of motion and the action function as well in order to obtain the path integral quantization of singular Lagrangians with linear velocities.
In this paper, we study singular systems with complete sets of involutive constraints. The aim is to establish, within the Hamilton-Jacobi theory, the relationship between the Frobenius' theorem, the infinitesimal canonical transformations generated by constraints in involution with the Poisson brackets, and the lagrangian point (gauge) transformations of physical systems.
We discuss a general procedure for arriving at the Hamilton-Jacobi equation of second-class constrained systems, and illustrate it in terms of a number of examples by explicitely obtaining the respective Hamilton principal function, and verifying that it leads to the correct solution to the Euler-Lagrange equations.
The change in Holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) for small fluctuations about pure anti De Sitter (AdS) is obtained by a perturbative expansion of the area functional in terms of the change in the bulk metric and the embedded extremal surface. However, it is known that change in the embedding appears in second order or higher. It was shown that these changes in the embedding can be calculated in the $2+1$ dimensional case by solving a generalized geodesic deviation equation. We generalize this result to arbitrary dimensions by deriving an inhomogeneous form of the Jacobi equation for minim…
In holographic inflation, the $4D$ cosmological dynamics is postulated to be dual to the renormalization group flow of a $3D$ Euclidean conformal field theory with marginally relevant operators. The scalar potential of the $4D$ theory ---in which inflation is realized--- is highly constrained, with use of the Hamilton--Jacobi equations. In multi-field holographic realizations of inflation, fields additional to the inflaton cannot display underdamped oscillations (that is, their wavefunctions contain no oscillatory phases independent of the momenta). We show that this result is exact, independe…
Using Hamilton-Jacobi formalism we investigated the massive Yang-Mills theory on both extended and reduced phase-space. The integrability conditions were discussed and the actions were calculated.
We apply the long-wavelength approximation to the low energy effective string action in the context of Hamilton-Jacobi theory. The Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the effective string action is explicitly invariant under scale factor duality. We present the leading order, general solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. The Hamilton-Jacobi approach yields a solution consistent with the Lagrange formalism. The momentum constraints take an elegant, simple form. Furthermore this general solution reduces to the quasi-isotropic one, if the evolution of the gravitational field is neglected. Duality tr…
Quadratic Lagrangians are introduced adding surface terms to a free particle Lagrangian. Geodesic equations are used in the context of the Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of constrained sysytem. Manifold structure induced by the quadratic Lagrangian is investigated.
We demonstrate the separability of the Hamilton-Jacobi and scalar field equations in general higher dimensional Kerr-NUT-AdS spacetimes. No restriction on the parameters characterizing these metrics is imposed.
The Hamilton-Jacobi formalism of constrained systems is used to study superstring. That obtained the equations of motion for a singular system as total differential equations in many variables. These equations of motion are in exact agreement with those equations obtained using Dirac's method. Moreover, the Hamilton-Jacobi quantization of a constrained system is discussed. Quantization of the relativistic local free field with a linear velocity of dimension D containing second-class constraints is studied. The set of Hamilton-Jacobi partial differential equations and the path integral of these…
In this work we study the theory of linearized gravity via the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism. We make a brief review of this theory and its Lagrangian description, as well as a review of the Hamilton-Jacobi approach for singular systems. Then we apply this formalism to analyze the constraint structure of the linearized gravity in instant and front-form dynamics.
Jacobi fields of classical solutions of a Hamiltonian mechanical system are quantized in the framework of vertical-extended Hamiltonian formalism. Quantum Jacobi fields characterize quantum transitions between classical solutions.
In this work we present a formal generalization of the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism, recently developed for singular systems, to include the case of Lagrangians containing variables which are elements of Berezin algebra. We derive the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for such systems, analizing the singular case in order to obtain the equations of motion as total differential equations and study the integrability conditions for such equations. An example is solved using both Hamilton-Jacobi and Dirac's Hamiltonian formalisms and the results are compared.
The covariant Hamilton-Jacobi formulation of Maxwell's equations is derived from the first-order (Palatini-like) Lagrangian using the analysis of constraints within the De~Donder-Weyl covariant Hamiltonian formalism and the corresponding polysymplectic reduction.
We develop the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism for Podolsky's electromagnetic theory on the null-plane. The main goal is to build the complete set of Hamiltonian generators of the system, as well as to study the canonical and gauge transformations of the theory.
A proposal for the Hamilton-Jacobi theory in the context of the covariant formulation of Hamiltonian systems is done. The current approach consists in applying Dirac's method to the corresponding action which implies the inclusion of second-class constraints in the formalism which are handled using the procedure of Rothe and Scholtz recently reported. The current method is applied to the nonrelativistic two-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator employing the various symplectic structures for this dynamical system recently reported.
By using the Hamilton-Jacobi [$HJ$] framework the higher-order Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory is analyzed. The complete set of $HJ$ Hamiltonians and a generalized $HJ$ differential are reported, from which all symmetries of the theory are identified. In addition, we complete our study by performing the higher order Gitman-Lyakhovich-Tyutin [$GLT$] framework and compare the results of both formalisms.
Following the analysis we have presented in a previous paper (that we refer to as [I]), we describe a Noether theorem related to symmetries, with the associated reduction procedures, for classical dynamics within the Lagrangian and the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism.
The Hamilton-Jacobi analysis of three dimensional gravity defined in terms of Ashtekar-like variables is performed. We report a detailed analysis where the complete set of Hamilton-Jacobi constraints, the characteristic equations and the gauge transformations of the theory are found. We find from integrability conditions on the Hamilton-Jacobi Hamiltonians that the theory is reduced to a $BF$ field theory defined only in terms of self-dual (or anti-self-dual) variables; we identify the dynamical variables and the counting of physical degrees of freedom is performed. In addition, we compare our…
We extend the geometric Hamilton-Jacobi formalism for hamiltonian mechanics to higher order field theories with regular lagrangian density. We also investigate the dependence of the formalism on the lagrangian density in the class of those yelding the same Euler-Lagrange equations.
For higher derivative theories, using the approach of Caratheodory's equivalent Lagrangian, we show that there exist novel formulations of Hamilton-Jacobi equations, which are different from the formulations derived from Hamilton's canonical approach. The quantum mechanical correspondences of these novel Hamilton-Jacobi equations lead to nonlinear quantum mechanics, which seem being able to avoid the unbounded negative energy problem in the quantum mechanics of higher derivative theories.
The Hamilton--Jacobi formalism generalized to 2--dimensional field theories according to Lepage's canonical framework is applied to several covariant real scalar fields, e.g. massless and massive Klein--Gordon, Sine--Gordon, Liouville and $ϕ^4$ theories. For simplicity we use the Hamilton--Jacobi equation of DeDonder and Weyl. Unlike mechanics we have to impose certain integrability conditions on the velocity fields to guarantee the transversality relations between Hamilton--Jacobi wave fronts and the corresponding families of extremals embedded therein. Bäcklund Transformations play a crucial…
