In our previous work in Xiao et al. (2019), we suggested that 6 superluminal sources could be gamma-ray candidates, and in fact 5 of them have been confirmed in the fourth Fermi-LAT source catalogue (4FGL). In this work, based on the 4FGL, we report a sample of 229 Fermi detected superluminal sources (FDSs) including 40 new FDSs and 62 non-Fermi detected superluminal sources (non-FDSs). Thus, we believe that all superluminal sources should have $γ$-ray emissions, and superluminal motion could also be a clue to detect $γ$-ray emission from active galactic nuclei (AGN). We present a new approach of Doppler factor estimate through the study of the $γ$-ray luminosity ($L_{\rm γ}$) and of the viewing angle ($ϕ$).
Superluminal motion has been found to occur in many kinds of celestial bodies with the relativistic ejecta, especially for some active galactic nuclei (AGNs), gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and micro-quasars, although these objects are largely different in their lifetimes, sizes and features. We compare the apparent superluminal motions of GRBs with AGNs and different sub-classes of AGNs (e.g., Radio galaxies, BL Lac objects, and Quasars). Particularly, we focus on two low luminosity GRBs, namely 060218 and 170817A, that are ultra-long and short bursts associated with supernova and gravitational wave…
Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have been attracting research attention due to their special observable properties. Specifically, a majority of AGNs are detected by Fermi-LAT missions, but not by Fermi-LAT, which raises the question of whether any differences exist between the two. To answer this issue, we compile a sample of 291 superluminal AGNs (189 FDSs and 102 non-FDSs) from available multi-wavelength radio, optical, and X-ray (or even $γ$-ray) data and Doppler factors and proper motion ($μ$) (or apparent velocity ($β_{\rm{app}}$)); calculated the apparent velocity from their proper motion,…
The direction of the axis of the orbital motion of the merging binary neutron stars in the GW170817 event coincided with that of the apparent superluminal jet, which produced the short hard gamma ray burst (SHB) 170817A, if the local value of the Hubble constant is that provided by standard candle Type Ia supernovae, H_0=73.24 +/- 1.74 km/s Mpc. This value differs by 3 sigma from the cosmic value H_0=67.74 +/- 0.46 km/s Mpc obtained from the cosmic microwave background radiation by Planck assuming the standard Lambda-CDM cosmology. The measured superluminal motion of the jet also allows critic…
The last decade has seen tremendous developments in gamma-ray astronomy with the extragalactic sky becoming highly populated by Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). This brief review highlights some of the progress in AGN research achieved over the years, and discusses exemplary advances in the theory and physics of gamma-ray loud AGNs, including black-hole magnetospheric processes, the physics of pc-scales jets, as well as particle acceleration and high-energy emission in the large-scale jets of AGNs.
Chandra HRC observations are investigated for evidence of proper motion and brightness changes in the X-ray jet of the nearby radio galaxy M87. Using images spanning 5 yr, proper motion is measured in the X-ray knot HST-1, with a superluminal apparent speed of $6.3 \pm 0.4 c$, or $24.1 \pm 1.6\rm\ mas\ yr^{-1}$, and in Knot D, with a speed of $2.4\pm 0.6c$. Upper limits are placed on the speeds of the remaining jet features. The X-ray knot speeds are in excellent agreement with existing measurements in the radio, optical, and ultraviolet. Comparing the X-ray results with images from the Hubble…
Blazars, radio-loud active galactic nuclei with the relativistic jet closely aligned with the line of sight, dominate the extragalactic sky observed at gamma-ray energies, above 100 MeV. We discuss some of the emission properties of these sources, focusing in particular on the "blazar sequence" and the interpretative models of the high-energy emission of BL Lac objects.
We study the correlation between the [O III]$λ5007$ and X-ray luminosities of local Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), using a complete, hard X-ray ($>10$ keV) selected sample in the Swift/BAT 9-month catalog. From our optical spectroscopic observations at the South African Astronomical Observatory and the literature, a catalog of [O III]$λ5007$ line flux for all 103 AGNs at Galactic latitudes of $|b|>15^\circ$ is complied. Significant correlations with intrinsic X-ray luminosity ($L_{\rm X}$) are found both for observed ($L_{\rm [O~III]}$) and extinction-corrected ($L_{\rm [O~III]}^{\rm cor}$) lu…
Supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei launch relativistic jets, as indicated by observed superluminal radio blobs. The energy source of these jets is widely discussed in the theoretical framework of Blandford-Znajek process, the electromagnetic energy extraction from rotating black holes (BHs), while formation mechanism of the radio blobs in the electromagnetically-dominated jets has been a long-standing problem. Recent high-resolution magnetohydrodynamic simulations of magnetically arrested disks exhibited magnetic reconnection in a transient magnetically-dominated part of the eq…
The discovery of changing-look active galactic nuclei (CLAGNs) with the significant change of optical broad emission lines (optical CLAGNs) and/or strong variation of line-of-sight column densities (X-ray CLAGNs) challenges the orientation-based AGN unification model. We explore mid-infrared (mid-IR) properties for a sample of 57 optical CLAGNs and 11 X-ray CLAGNs based on the {\it Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer} ({\it WISE}) archive data. We find that Eddington-scaled mid-IR luminosities of both optical and X-ray CLAGNs stay just between low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs) and luminous QSOs. Th…
We study the link between the X-ray emission in radio-quiet AGNs and the accretion rate on the central Supermassive Black Hole using a statistically well-defined and representative sample of 71 type 1 AGNs extracted from the XMM-Newton Bright Serendipitous Survey. We search and quantify the statistical correlations between some fundamental parameters that characterize the X-ray emission, i.e. the X-ray spectral slope, and the X-ray "loudness", and the accretion rate, both absolute and normalized to the Eddington luminosity (Eddington ratio). We parametrize the X-ray loudness using three differ…
The Fermi-LAT satellite has recently discovered a small group of radio galaxies and steep spectrum radio sources: the misaligned AGNs (MAGNs) sample. We present the X-ray analysis of all the sources of this sample (7 FRIs and 3 FRIIs) with a firm GeV association. This study supports the idea that FRIIs host more efficient accretion mechanisms (m_dot >0.1) than FRIs (m_dot <0.003). Furthermore, in objects with high accretion rates the Broad Line Regions appear to be very active zones where, in addition to optical lines, the fluorescence iron Kalpha feature at 6.4 keV is also produced. It seems …
We analysed how the active galactic nucleus (AGN) X-ray primary continuum depends on AGN activity in radio, using the data of RXTE Spectral & Timing Database (Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer) and INTEGRAL (INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory). Our aim is to test the relation between spectral shapes of these AGNs and the prediction of the "spin-paradigm" model of the AGN "central engine". We have found that for the major part of radio-quiet (RQ) AGNs the value of high-energy exponential cut-off in primary spectrum appears to be significantly higher than 100 keV and thus follows the "spi…
Recent radio observations reveal the existence of mini radio lobes in active galaxies with their scales of $\sim 10 {\rm pc}$. The lobes are expected to be filled with shock accelerated electrons and protons. In this work, we examine the photon spectra from the mini lobes, properly taking the hadronic processes into account. We find that the resultant broadband spectra contain the two distinct hadronic bumps in $γ$-ray bands, i.e., the proton synchrotron bump at $\sim$ MeV and the synchrotron bump at $\sim$ GeV due to the secondary electrons/positrons produced via photo-pion cascade. Especiall…
We present the results of an investigation of the X-ray and UV properties of four LINERs observed with Swift, aimed at constructing good S/N and strictly simultaneous UV-X-ray SEDs. In the current paradigm, LINER emission is dominated by geometrically thick, radiatively inefficient radiation flows (RIAFs) as opposed to radiatively efficient, geometrically thin accretion disks thought to power higher luminosity AGNs (Seyferts and QSOs). However, some recent studies have found more similarities than differences between the SEDs of LINERs and those of more luminous AGNs, suggesting that LINERs ar…
We introduce a simple model to explain the time-reversed and stretched residuals in gamma-ray burst (GRB) pulse light curves. In this model an impactor wave in an expanding GRB jet accelerates from subluminal to superluminal velocities, or decelerates from superluminal to subluminal velocities. The impactor wave interacts with the surrounding medium to produce Cherenkov and/or other collisional radiation when traveling faster than the speed of light in this medium, and other mechanisms (such as thermalized Compton or synchrotron shock radiation) when traveling slower than the speed of light. T…
We investigated the possibility of acceleration of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) in nearby active galactic nuclei (AGNs) using archival multi-wavelength observational data, and then we constrained their physical conditions, i.e., the luminosity of the synchrotron radiation and the size of the acceleration site. First, we investigated the spatial correlation between the arrival directions of UHECRs and the positions of nearby AGNs in the Fermi third gamma-ray source catalog. We selected 27 AGNs as candidates of accelerators of UHECRs. Then, we evaluated the physical conditions in the a…
Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) have been one of the most widely discussed sources of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). The recent results of Pierre Auger observatory (PAO) have indicated a possible composition change of UHECRs above ~10^{18.5} eV towards heavy nuclei. We show here that if indeed UHECRs are largely heavy nuclei, then nearby radio quiet AGNs can also be viable sources of UHECRs. We derive constraints on the acceleration sites which enable acceleration of UHECRs to 10^{20} eV without suffering losses. We show that the acceleration of UHECRs and the survival of energetic heavy…
We report on the results of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) detection by NuSTAR performed in three extragalactic survey fields (COSMOS, UDS, ECDFS) in three hard bands, namely H1 (8-16 keV), H2 (16-24 keV) and VH (35-55 keV). The aggregated area of the surveys is $\sim 2.7$ deg$^2$. While a large number of sources is detected in the H1 band (72 at the $97\%$ level of reliability), the H2 band directly probing close to the peak of the Cosmic X-ray Background (CXB) returns four significant detections, and two tentative, although not significant, detections are found in the VH band. All the sources…
Gamma Ray AGNs: Estimating Redshifts and Blazar Classification using traditional Neural Networks with smart initialization and self-supervised learning
X-ray evidence for ultra-fast outflows (UFOs) has been recently reported in a number of local AGNs through the detection of blue-shifted Fe XXV/XXVI absorption lines. We present the results of a comprehensive spectral analysis of a large sample of 42 local Seyferts and 5 Broad-Line Radio Galaxies (BLRGs) observed with XMM-Newton and Suzaku. We detect UFOs in >40% of the sources. Their outflow velocities are in the range 0.03-0.3c, with a mean value of ~0.14c. The ionization is high, in the range logxi~3-6 erg s^{-1} cm, and also the associated column densities are large, in the interval ~10^{2…
Changing-look active galactic nuclei (CLAGNs) show the disappearance and reappearance of broad emission lines in a few years, which challenges the orientation-based AGN unification model. We reduce the X-ray data for five well-studied CLAGNs that show a strong change in broad emission lines in the past several decades. We find that the X-ray photon index, $Γ$, and the Eddington-scaled X-ray luminosity, $L_{\rm 2-10 keV}/L_{\rm Edd}$, normally follow negative and positive correlations when the Eddington ratio is lower and higher than a critical value of $\sim 10^{-3}$. We find that the CLAGNs o…
AGNs with hard $γ$-ray emission identified so far are radio-loud. III Zw 2 is a radio intermediate AGN with a relativistic jet. We study its spectral energy distribution (SED) and find that the broad band emissions are dominated by the non-thermal emissions from the jet. We model its SED through a synchrotron + inverse Compton (IC) model. The results show that the IC component of III Zw 2 peaks at a few MeV, and the flux density drops rapidly at higher energy with photon index $Γ\approx3.3$ above 0.1 GeV. The predicted flux is slightly over the sensitivity of $Fermi$/LAT, but it is not include…
We study the link between the X-ray emission in radio-quiet AGNs and the accretion rate on the central Supermassive Black-Hole (SMBH) using a well-defined and statistically complete sample of 70 type1 AGNs extracted from the XMM-Newton Bright Serendipitous survey (XBS). To this end, we search and quantify the statistical correlations between the main parameters that characterize the X-ray emission (i.e. the X-ray spectral slope and the X-ray loudness), and the accretion rate, both absolute and relative to the Eddington limit (Eddington ratio). Here, we summarize and discuss the main statistica…
Even in deep X-ray surveys, Compton-thick active galactic nuclei (CT AGNs, ${\rm N_H} \geqslant 1.5~\times~10^{24}~{\rm cm}^{-2}$) are difficult to be identified due to X-ray flux suppression and their complex spectral shape. However, the study of CT AGNs is vital for understanding the rapid growth of black holes and the origin of cosmic X-ray background. In the local universe, the fraction of CT AGNs accounts for 30% of the whole AGN population. We may expect a higher fraction of CT AGNs in deep X-ray surveys, however, only 10% of AGNs have been identified as CT AGNs in the 7 Ms \textit{Chand…
Aims. Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with EUV deficit are suggested to be powered by a MAD surrounding the black hole, where the slope of EUV spectra ($α_{\rm EUV}$) is found to possess a well positive relationship with the jet efficiency. In this work, we investigate the properties of X-ray emission in AGNs with EUV deficit for the first time. Methods. We construct a sample of 15 objects with EUV deficit to analyse their X-ray emission. The X-ray luminosity in 13 objects are newly processed by ourself, while the other 2 sources are gathered from archival data. Results. It is found that the ave…
We started two observing programs with the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) monitoring changes in the flux density and polarization of relativistic jets in gamma-ray bright AGNs simultaneously at 22, 43, 86, 129 GHz. One is a single-dish weekly-observing program in dual polarization with KVN 21-m diameter radio telescopes beginning in 2011 May. The other is a VLBI monthly-observing program with the three-element VLBI network at an angular resolution range of 1.0--9.2 mas beginning in 2012 December. The monitoring observations aim to study correlation of variability in gamma-ray with that in radio flu…
The physical parameters of galaxies and/or AGNs can be derived by fitting their multi-band spectral energy distributions (SEDs). By using CIGALE code, we perform multi-band SED fitting (from ultraviolet to infrared) for 791 X-ray sources (518 AGNs and 273 normal galaxies) in the 7 Ms Chandra Deep Field-south survey (CDFS). We consider the contributions from AGNs and adopt more accurate redshifts than published before. Therefore, more accurate star formation rates (SFRs) and stellar masses (M$_*$) are derived. We classify the 518 AGNs into type-I and type-II based on their optical spectra and t…
AGNs are very powerful galaxies characterized by extremely bright emissions coming out from their central massive black holes. Knowing the redshifts of AGNs provides us with an opportunity to determine their distance to investigate important astrophysical problems such as the evolution of the early stars, their formation along with the structure of early galaxies. The redshift determination is challenging because it requires detailed follow-up of multi-wavelength observations, often involving various astronomical facilities. Here, we employ machine learning algorithms to estimate redshifts fro…
Binary active galactic nuclei (AGNs) provide clues to how gas-rich mergers trigger and fuel AGNs and how supermassive black hole (SMBH) pairs evolve in a gas-rich environment. While significant effort has been invested in their identification, the detailed properties of binary AGNs and their host galaxies are still poorly constrained. In a companion paper, we examined the nature of ionizing sources in the double nuclei of four kpc-scale binary AGNs with redshifts between 0.1~0.2. Here, we present their host galaxy morphology based on F336W (U-band) and F105W (Y-band) images taken by the Wide F…
Blazars are a small fraction of all extragalactic sources but, unlike other objects, they are strong emitters across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Recent data in the microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum have become available to allow for systematic studies of blazars over large cosmological volumes. This frequency band is indeed particularly suited for the selection of blazars since at these frequencies the contamination from radio extended components with steep spectra is no longer present and the emission from the accretion process is negligible. During the first 3 months …
In the first 3.5 years of operations the Fermi LAT detected several sources with daily fluxes brighter than F(E>100MeV) > 10^{-6} ph/cm^2/s, the threshold set by the Fermi Collaboration for issuing an Astronomer Telegram. We focus the attention on these flaring sources, most of which are blazars, known to be extremely variable over the whole electromagnetic spectrum, from radio to gamma-ray energies and we investigate the properties of the selected sample comparing them to the general characteristics of the Fermi catalog sources.
We use the 4Ms CDF-S survey to place direct X-ray constraints on the ubiquity of z~2 heavily obscured AGNs in K<22 BzK galaxies. Forty seven of the 222 BzK galaxies in the central region of the CDF-S are detected at X-ray energies, 11 of which have hard X-ray spectral slopes (Gamma<1) indicating the presence of heavily obscured AGN activity. The other 36 X-ray detected BzK galaxies appear to be relatively unobscured AGNs and starburst galaxies; we use X-ray variability analyses over a rest-frame baseline of ~3 years to further confirm the presence of AGN activity in many of these systems. The …
The Wide Field X-ray Telescope (WFXT) is a proposed mission with a high survey speed, due to the combination of large field of view (FOV) and effective area, i.e. grasp, and sharp PSF across the whole FOV. These characteristics make it suitable to detect a large number of variable and transient X-ray sources during its operating lifetime. Here we present estimates of the WFXT capabilities in the time domain, allowing to study the variability of thousand of AGNs with significant detail, as well as to constrain the rates and properties of hundreds of distant, faint and/or rare objects such as X-…
In this work, we investigated the X-ray emission for a sample of young radio AGNs by combining their data from Chandra/XMM-Newton and at other wavebands. We find strong correlations between the X-ray luminosity $L_{\rm X}$ in 2$-$10 keV and the radio luminosities $L_{\rm R}$ at 5 GHz for VLBI radio-core, VLA radio-core and FIRST component, indicating that both pc- and kpc-scale radio emission strongly correlate with X-ray emission in these sources. We find approximately linear dependence of radio on X-ray luminosity in the sources with radiative efficient accretion flows (i.e., the Eddington r…
Based on a comparison of the SRG/eROSITA catalog of X-ray active stars and the Gaia catalog, a sample of 502 peculiar objects was obtained for which Gaia, on one hand, detects statistically significant values of parallax or proper motion and, on the other hand, registers signs of the non zero source extent in the optical band. In the log ($F_X/F_{\rm opt}$) - (G-RP) color diagram these objects are separated from the balk of X-ray active stars and are located in the region typical for the galaxies with active nuclei. According to the SIMBAD database, about $\sim 50$% of them are confirmed AGNs …
In modeling the X-ray spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), the inclination angle is a parameter that can play an important role in analyzing the X-ray spectra of AGN, but it has never been studied in detail. We present a broadband X-ray spectral analysis of the joint NuSTAR-XMM-Newton observations of 13 sources with [OIII] measured inclinations determined by Fischer et al. 2013. By freezing the inclination angles at the [OIII] measured values when modeling the observations, the spectra are well fitted and the geometrical properties of the obscuring structure of the AGNs are slightly bette…
We explore the connection between different classes of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and the evolution of their host galaxies, by deriving host galaxy properties, clustering, and Eddington ratios of AGNs selected in the radio, X-ray, and infrared. We study a sample of 585 AGNs at 0.25 < z < 0.8 using redshifts from the AGN and Galaxy Evolution Survey (AGES) and data in the radio (WSRT 1.4 GHz), X-rays (Chandra XBootes), and mid-IR (IRAC Shallow Survey). The radio, X-ray, and IR AGN samples show modest overlap, indicating that to the flux limits of the survey, they represent largely distinct cl…
We present a detailed X-ray spectral analysis of 1152 AGNs selected in the Chandra Deep Fields (CDFs), in order to identify highly obscured AGNs ($N_{\rm H} > 10^{23}\ \rm cm^{-2}$). By fitting spectra with physical models, 436 (38%) sources with $L_{\rm X} > 10^{42}\ \rm erg\ s^{-1}$ are confirmed to be highly obscured, including 102 Compton-thick (CT) candidates. We propose a new hardness-ratio measure of the obscuration level which can be used to select highly obscured AGN candidates. The completeness and accuracy of applying this method to our AGNs are 88% and 80%, respectively. The observ…
We present the results of a systematic, broadband X-ray spectral analysis of nearby active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with the X-ray clumpy torus model (XCLUMPY; Tanimoto et al. 2019). By adding 16 AGNs newly analyzed in this paper, we study total 28 AGNs including unabsorbed and absorbed AGNs taken from Ichikawa et al. (2015) and García-Bernete et al. (2019). This is the largest sample whose X-ray and infrared spectra are analyzed by the clumpy torus models XCLUMPY and CLUMPY (Nenkova et al. 2008), respectively. The relation between the Eddington ratio and the torus covering factor determined fro…
We present a systematic X-ray and multiwavelength study of a sample of 47 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with reverberation-mapping measurements. This sample includes 21 super-Eddington accreting AGNs and 26 sub-Eddington accreting AGNs. Using high-state observations with simultaneous X-ray and UV/optical measurements, we investigate whether super-Eddington accreting AGNs exhibit different accretion disk-corona connections compared to sub-Eddington accreting AGNs. We find tight correlations between the X-ray-to-UV/optical spectral slope parameter ($α_{\rm OX}$) and the monochromatic luminosity …
Soft X-ray emission (0.5--2.0 keV) plays a pivotal role in regulating the optical and UV emission in the AGNs. We collected a sample of 1811 AGNs from the SDSS database and obtained various parameters of Balmer lines, optical continuum, MgII line \& UV continuum and studied their dependencies on soft X-ray luminosity. Based on the linear regression analysis, we found that FWHM$_{\text{MgII}}$ $\propto$ FWHM$_{\text{H}β}^{0.554}$ suggesting that UV emission is arising from a region relatively outside the broad line region (BLR) associated to the H$β$ emission and found a strong correlation betw…
X-ray polarimetry can potentially constrain the unknown geometrical shape of AGN coronae. We present simulations of the X-ray polarization signal expected from AGN coronae, assuming three different geometries, namely slab, spherical and conical. We use the fully relativistic Monte-Carlo Comptonization code monk to compute the X-ray polarization degree and angle. We explore different coronal parameters such as shape, size, location and optical depth. Different coronal geometries give a significantly different X-ray polarization signal. A slab corona yields a high polarization degree, up to 14% …
The dusty torus plays a vital role in unifying active galactic nuclei (AGNs). However, the physical structure of the torus remains largely unclear. Here we present a systematical investigation of the torus mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopic feature, i.e., the 9.7 um silicate line, of $175$ AGNs selected from the Swift/BAT Spectroscopic Survey (BASS). Our sample is constructed to ensure that each of the $175$ AGNs has Spizter/IRS MIR, optical, and X-ray spectroscopic coverage. Therefore, we can simultaneously measure the silicate strength, optical emission lines, and X-ray properties (e.g., the c…
We report on the VLBI follow-up observations using the Japanese VLBI Network (JVN) array at 22 GHz for the largest X-ray flare of TeV blazar Mrk 421 that occurred in mid-February, 2010. The total of five epochs of observations were performed at intervals of about 20 days between March 7 and May 31, 2010. No new-born component associated with the flare was seen directly in the total intensity images obtained by our multi-epoch VLBI observations. However, one jet component located at ~1 mas north-west from the core was able to be identified, and its proper motion can be measured as -1.66+/-0.46 …
We present new measurements of the evolution of the X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) of unabsorbed and absorbed Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) out to z~5. We construct samples containing 2957 sources detected at hard (2-7 keV) X-ray energies and 4351 sources detected at soft (0.5-2 keV) energies from a compilation of Chandra surveys supplemented by wide-area surveys from ASCA} and ROSAT. We consider the hard and soft X-ray samples separately and find that the XLF based on either (initially neglecting absorption effects) is best described by a new flexible model parametrization where the break …
The scaling relations between the black hole (BH) mass and soft lag properties for both active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and BH X-ray binaries (BHXRBs) suggest the same underlying physical mechanism at work in accreting BH systems spanning a broad range of mass. However, the low-mass end of AGNs has never been explored in detail. In this work, we extend the existing scaling relations to lower-mass AGNs, which serve as anchors between the normal-mass AGNs and BHXRBs. For this purpose, we construct a sample of low-mass AGNs ($M_{\rm BH}<3\times 10^{6} M_{\rm \odot}$) from the XMM-Newton archive and…
Many theoretical models require powerful active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to suppress star formation in distant galaxies and reproduce the observed properties of today's massive galaxies. A recent study based on Herschel-SPIRE submillimetre observations claimed to provide direct support for this picture, reporting a significant decrease in the mean star-formation rates (SFRs) of the most luminous AGNs (Lx>10^44 erg/s) at z=1-3 in the Chandra Deep Field-North (CDF-N). In this letter we extend these results using Herschel-SPIRE 250um data in the COSMOS and CDF-S fields to achieve an order of magnit…
The origin of the extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGRB) radiation has been a mystery in astrophysics for a long time. Recently the Fermi gamma-ray satellite (Fermi) has revealed that ~22% of the unresolved EGRB would be explained by blazars, which are one population of beamed active galactic nuclei (AGNs). The remaining ~78% of the unresolved EGRB is still unknown. We estimate the contribution of gamma-ray loud radio galaxies, which are misaligned radio loud AGNs recently detected by Fermi, to EGRB using the radio luminosity function of radio-loud AGNs with the correlation between the radi…
The dust reverberation mapping is one of powerful methods to investigate the structure of the dusty tori in AGNs, and it has been performed on more than a hundred type 1 AGNs. However, no clear results have been reported on type 2 AGNs because their strong optical-UV extinction completely hides their accretion disc emission. Here we focus on an X-ray-bright type 2 AGN, NGC 2110, and utilize 2-20 keV X-ray variation monitored by MAXI to trace disc emission, instead of optical-UV variation. Comparing it with light curves in the WISE infrared (IR) W1 band ($λ= 3.4$ $μ$m) and W2 band ($λ= 4.6$ $μ$…
We investigate the X-ray variability characteristics of hard X-ray selected AGNs (based on Swift/BAT data) in the soft X-ray band using the RXTE/ASM data. The uncertainties involved in the individual dwell measurements of ASM are critically examined and a method is developed to combine a large number of dwells with appropriate error propagation to derive long duration flux measurements (greater than 10 days). We also provide a general prescription to estimate the errors in variability derived from rms values from unequally spaced data. Though the derived variability for individual sources are …
Radio AGN feedback in X-ray cool cores has been proposed as a crucial ingredient in the evolution of baryonic structures. However, it has long been known that strong radio AGNs also exist in "noncool core" clusters, which brings up the question whether an X-ray cool core is always required for radio feedback. We present a systematic analysis of 152 groups and clusters to show that every BCG with a strong radio AGN has an X-ray cool core. Those strong radio AGNs in the center of the "noncool core" systems identified before are in fact associated with small X-ray cool cores with typical radii of…
