"Orion fingers" are a system of dozens of bowshocks, with the wings of shocks pointing to a common system of origin, which is centered on a dynamically disintegrating system of several massive stars. The shock heads propagate with velocities of up to 300-400 km/s, but the formation and physical properties of the "bullets" leading the shocks are not known. Here we summarize two possible scenarios for the formation of the "bullets" and the resulting bowshocks ("fingers"). In the first scenario, bullets are self-gravitating, Jupiter-mass objects which were formed rapidly and then ejected during the strong dynamical interactions of massive stars and their disks. This scenario naturally explains the similar timescales for the outflow of bullets and for the dynamical interaction of the massive stars, but has some difficulty explaining the observed high velocities of the bullets. In the second scenario, bullets are formed via hydrodynamic instabilities in a massive, infrared-driven wind, naturally explaining the high velocities and the morphology of outflow, but the bullets are not required to be self-gravitating. The processes that created the Orion fingers are likely not unique to this particular star-forming region and may result in free-floating, high-velocity, core-less planets.
We present near-IR (1.1-2.4 micron) position-position-velocity cubes of the 500-year-old Orion BN/KL explosive outflow with spatial resolution 1" and spectral resolution 86 km/s. We construct integrated intensity maps free of continuum sources of 15 H2 and [Fe II] lines while preserving kinematic information of individual outflow features. Included in the detected H2 lines are the 1-0 S(1) and 1-0 Q(3) transitions, allowing extinction measurements across the outflow. Additionally, we present dereddened flux ratios for over two dozen outflow features to allow for the characterization of the tru…
Orion BN/KL is an example of a poorly understood phenomena in star forming regions involving the close encounter of young stellar objects. The explosive structure, the great variety of molecules observed, the energy involved in the event and the mass of the region suggest a contribution in the {chemical diversity} of the local interstellar medium. Nevertheless, the frequency and duration of other events like this have not been determined. In this paper, we explore a recent analytic model that takes into account the interaction of a clump with its molecular environment. We show that the widespr…
We measure H$_2$ temperatures and column densities across the Orion BN/KL explosive outflow from a set of thirteen near-IR H$_2$ rovibrational emission lines observed with the TripleSpec spectrograph on Apache Point Observatory's 3.5-meter telescope. We find that most of the region is well-characterized by a single temperature (~2000-2500 K), which may be influenced by the limited range of upper energy levels (6000-20,000 K) probed by our data set. The H$_2$ column density maps indicate that warm H$_2$ comprises 10$^{-5}$ - 10$^{-3}$ of the total H$_2$ column density near the center of the out…
Aims. Adaptive optics images are used to test the hypothesis that the explosive BN/KL outflow from the Orion OMC1 cloud core was powered by the dynamical decay of a non-hierarchical system of massive stars. Methods. Narrow-band H2, [Fe II], and broad-band Ks obtained with the Gemini South multi-conjugate adaptive optics (AO) system GeMS and near-infrared imager GSAOI are presented. The images reach resolutions of 0.08 to 0.10", close to the 0.07" diffraction limit of the 8-meter telescope at 2.12 microns. Comparison with previous AO-assisted observations of sub-fields and other ground-based ob…
We report a study of the three-dimensional (3D) outflow structure of a 15$\arcsec$ $\times$ 13$\arcsec$ area around H$_{2}$ peak 1 in Orion KL with slit-scan observations (13 slits) using the Immersion Grating Infrared Spectrograph. The datacubes, with high velocity-resolution ($\sim$ 7.5 {\kms}) provide high contrast imaging within ultra-narrow bands, and enable the detection of the main stream of the previously reported H$_{2}$ outflow fingers. We identified 31 distinct fingers in H$_{2}$ 1$-$0 S(1) $λ$2.122 $\micron$ emission. The line profile at each finger shows multiple-velocity peaks wi…
During their infancy, stars are well known to expel matter violently in the form of well-defined, collimated outflows. A fairly unique exception is found in the Orion BN/KL star-forming region where a poorly collimated and somewhat disordered outflow composed of numerous elongated ``finger-like'' structures was discovered more than 30 years ago. In this letter, we report the discovery in the same region of an even more atypical outflow phenomenon. Using $^{13}$CO(2-1) line observations made with the Submillimeter Array (SMA), we have identified there a 500 to 1,000 years old, expanding, roughl…
Most massive stars form in dense clusters where gravitational interactions with other stars may be common. The two nearest forming massive stars, the BN object and Source I, located behind the Orion Nebula, were ejected with velocities of $\sim$29 and $\sim$13 km s$^{-1}$ about 500 years ago by such interactions. This event generated an explosion in the gas. New ALMA observations show in unprecedented detail, a roughly spherically symmetric distribution of over a hundred $^{12}$CO J=2$-$1 streamers with velocities extending from V$_{LSR}$ =$-$150 to +145 km s$^{-1}$. The streamer radial veloci…
The ortho-to-para ratio (OPR) of H$_2$O is thought to be sensitive to the temperature of water formation. The OPR of H$_2$O is thus useful to study the formation mechanism of water. We investigate the OPR of water in the Orion PDR (Photon-dominated region), at the Orion Bar and Orion S positions, using data from {\it Herschel}/HIFI. We detect the ground-state lines of ortho- and para-H$_2$$^{18}$O in the Orion Bar and Orion S and we estimate the column densities using LTE and non-LTE methods. Based on our calculations, the ortho-to-para ratio (OPR) in the Orion Bar is 0.1 $-$ 0.5, which is une…
The Orion Molecular Complex is the nearest site of ongoing high-mass star formation, making it one of the most extensively studied molecular complexes in the Galaxy. We have developed a new technique for mapping the 3D distribution of dust in the Galaxy using Pan-STARRS1 photometry. We isolate the dust at the distance to Orion using this technique, revealing a large (100 pc, 14 degree diameter), previously unrecognized ring of dust, which we term the "Orion dust ring." The ring includes Orion A and B, and is not coincident with current H-alpha features. The circular morphology suggests formati…
Massive stars born in star clusters terminate star cluster formation by ionizing the surrounding gas. This process is considered to be prevalent in young star clusters containing massive stars. The Orion Nebula is an excellent example associated with a forming star cluster including several massive stars (the Orion Nebula Cluster; ONC) and a 2-pc size H{\sc ii} region (ionized bubble) opening toward the observer; however, the other side is still covered with dense molecular gas. Recent astrometric data acquired by the Gaia satellite revealed the stellar kinematics in this region. By comparing …
The new Gaia data release (EDR3) with improved astrometry has opened a new era in studying our Milky Way in fine detail. We use Gaia EDR3 astrometry together with 2MASS and WISE photometry to study two of the most massive molecular clouds in the solar vicinity: Orion A and California. Despite having remarkable similarities in the plane of the sky in terms of shape, size, and extinction, California has an order of magnitude lower star formation efficiency. We use our state-of-the-art dust mapping technique to derive the detailed three-dimensional (3D) structure of the two clouds, taking into ac…
The giant molecular cloud Orion A is the closest massive star-forming region to earth ($d\sim400$ pc). It contains the rich Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) in the North, and low-mass star-forming regions (L1641, L1647) to the South. To get a better understanding of the differences in star formation activity, we perform an analysis of the gas mass distribution and star formation rate across the cloud. We find that the gas is roughly uniformly distributed, while, oddly, the ONC region produced about a factor of ten more stars compared to the rest of the cloud. For a better interpretation of this phen…
To distinguish between the different theories proposed to explain massive star formation, it is crucial to establish the distribution, the extinction, and the density of low-mass stars in massive star-forming regions. We analyzed deep X-ray observations of the Orion massive star-forming region using the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP) catalog. We found that pre-main sequence (PMS) low-mass stars cluster toward the three massive star-forming regions: the Trapezium Cluster (TC), the Orion Hot Core (OHC), and OMC1-S. We derived low-mass stellar densities of 10^{5} stars pc^{-3} in the TC a…
The Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) is an excellent example for understanding the formation of star clusters. Recent studies have shown that ONC has three distinct age populations and anisotropy in velocity dispersions, which are key characteristics for understanding the formation history of the ONC. In this study, we perform a smoothed-particle hydrodynamics/$N$-body simulation of star cluster formation from a turbulent molecular cloud. In this simulation, stellar orbits are integrated using a high-order integrator without gravitational softening; therefore, we can follow the collisional evolution…
The nature of turbulence in molecular clouds is one of the key parameters that control star formation efficiency: compressive motions, as opposed to solenoidal motions, can trigger the collapse of cores, or mark the expansion of Hii regions. We try to observationally derive the fractions of momentum density ($ρv$) contained in the solenoidal and compressive modes of turbulence in the Orion B molecular cloud and relate these fractions to the star formation efficiency in the cloud. The implementation of a statistical method developed by Brunt & Federrath (2014), applied to a $^{13}$CO(J=1-0) dat…
We performed new comprehensive $^{13}$CO($J$=2--1) observations toward NGC 2024, the most active star forming region in Orion B, with an angular resolution of $\sim$100'' obtained with NANTEN2. We found that the associated cloud consists of two independent velocity components. The components are physically connected to the H{\sc ii} region as evidenced by their close correlation with the dark lanes and the emission nebulosity. The two components show complementary distribution with a displacement of $\sim$0.6 pc. Such complementary distribution is typical to colliding clouds discovered in regi…
We present new, wide and deep images in the 1.1 mm continuum and the $^{12}$CO ($J$=1-0) emission toward the northern part of the Orion A Giant Molecular Cloud (Orion-A GMC). The 1.1 mm data were taken with the AzTEC camera mounted on the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE) 10 m telescope in Chile, and the $^{12}$CO ($J$=1-0) data were with the 25 beam receiver (BEARS) on the NRO 45 m telescope in the On-The-Fly (OTF) mode. The present AzTEC observations are the widest $(\timeform{1.D7}$ $\times$ $\timeform{2.D3}$, corresponding to 12 pc $\times$ 17 pc) and the highest-sensitivit…
The Orion Nebula Cluster toward the HII region M42 is the most outstanding young cluster at the smallest distance 410pc among the rich high-mass stellar clusters. By newly analyzing the archival molecular data of the 12CO(J=1-0) emission at 21" resolution, we identified at least three pairs of complementary distributions between two velocity components at 8km/s and 13km/s. We present a hypothesis that the two clouds collided with each other and triggered formation of the high-mass stars, mainly toward two regions including the nearly ten O stars, theta1 Ori and theta2 Ori, in M42 and the B sta…
We present a map of the three-dimensional (3D) distribution of dust in the Orion complex. Orion is the closest site of high-mass star formation, making it an excellent laboratory for studying the interstellar medium and star formation. We use data from the Gaia-TGAS catalogue combined with photometry from 2MASS and WISE to get the distances and extinctions of individual stars in the vicinity of the Orion complex. We adopt the non-parametric method of Rezaei Kh. et al. (2017) to infer the probability distribution function of the dust densities at arbitrary points throughout the region. We map t…
Filaments are a key step on the path that leads from molecular clouds to star formation. However, their characteristics are heavily debated, and the exact processes that lead to their formation and fragmentation into dense cores still remain to be fully understood. We aim at characterising the mass, kinematics, and stability against gravitational collapse of a statistically significant sample of filaments in the Orion B molecular cloud, which is renown for its very low star formation efficiency. We characterise the gas column densities and kinematics over a field of 1.9 deg$^2$, using C$^{18}$…
To distinguish between the different theories proposed to explain massive star formation, it is crucial to establish the distribution, the extinction, and the density of low-mass stars in massive star-forming regions. We analyze deep X-ray observations of the Orion massive star-forming region using the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP) catalog. We studied the stellar distribution as a function of extinction, with cells of 0.03 pc x 0.03 pc, the typical size of protostellar cores. We derived stellar density maps and calculated cluster stellar densities. We found that low-mass stars cluster…
We analyzed the NANTEN2 13CO (J=2-1 and 1-0) datasets in NGC 2024. We found that the cloud consists of two velocity components, whereas the cloud shows mostly single-peaked CO profiles. The two components are physically connected to the HII region as evidenced by their close correlation with the dark lanes and the emission nebulosity. The two components show complementary distribution with a displacement of 0.4 pc. Such complementary distribution is typical to colliding clouds discovered in regions of high-mass star formation. We hypothesize that cloud-cloud collision between the two component…
(abridged) A scenario for the formation of multiple co-eval populations separated in age by about 1 Myr in very young clusters (VYCs, ages less than 10 Myr) and with masses in the range 600-20000 Msun is outlined. It rests upon a converging inflow of molecular gas building up a first population of pre-main sequence stars. The associated just-formed O stars ionise the inflow and suppress star formation in the embedded cluster. However, they typically eject each other out of the embedded cluster within 10^6 yr, that is before the molecular cloud filament can be ionised entirely. The inflow of mo…
A key parameter to the description of all star formation processes is the density structure of the gas. In this letter, we make use of probability distribution functions (PDFs) of Herschel column density maps of Orion B, Aquila, and Polaris, obtained with the Herschel Gould Belt survey (HGBS). We aim to understand which physical processes influence the PDF shape, and with which signatures. The PDFs of Orion B (Aquila) show a lognormal distribution for low column densities until Av 3 (6), and a power-law tail for high column densities, consistent with a rho r^-2 profile for the equivalent spher…
We introduce new analysis methods for studying the star cluster formation processes in Orion A, especially examining the scenario of a cloud-cloud collision. We utilize the CARMA-NRO Orion survey $^{13}$CO (1-0) data to compare molecular gas to the properties of YSOs from the SDSS III IN-SYNC survey. We show that the increase of $v_{\rm 13CO} - v_{\rm YSO}$ and $Σ$ scatter of older YSOs can be signals of cloud-cloud collision. SOFIA-upGREAT 158$μ$m [CII] archival data toward the northern part of Orion A are also compared to the $^{13}$CO data to test whether the position and velocity offsets b…
The Radcliffe Wave is a $\sim3$ kpc long coherent gas structure containing most of the star-forming complexes near the Sun. In this Letter we aim to find a Galactic context for the Radcliffe Wave by looking into a possible relationship between the gas structure and the Orion (Local) Arm. We use catalogs of massive stars and young open clusters based on \textit{Gaia} EDR3 astrometry, in conjunction with kiloparsec-scale 3D dust maps, to investigate the Galactic \textit{XY} spatial distributions of gas and young stars. We find a quasi-parallel offset between the luminous blue stars and the Radcl…

Strong winds and ultraviolet (UV) radiation from O-type stars disrupt and ionize their molecular core birthplaces, sweeping up material into parsec-size shells. Owing to dissociation by starlight, the thinnest shells are expected to host low molecular abundances and therefore little star formation. Here, we expand previous maps taken with the IRAM 30m telescope and present square-degree 12CO and 13CO (J=2-1) maps of the wind-driven "Veil bubble'' that surrounds the Trapezium cluster and its natal Orion molecular core (OMC). Although widespread and extended CO emission is largely absent from th…
We study the structure and kinematics of nine 0.1 pc-scale cores in Orion with the IRAM 30-m telescope and at higher resolution eight of the cores with CARMA, using CS(2-1) as the main tracer. The single-dish moment zero maps of the starless cores show single structures with central column densities ranging from 7 to 42 times 10^23 cm^-2 and LTE masses from 20 solar masses to 154 solar masses. However, at the higher CARMA resolution (5 arcsec), all of the cores except one fragment into 3 - 5 components. The number of fragments is small compared to that found in some turbulent fragmentation mod…
The Orion molecular cloud complex harbours the nearest GMCs and site of high-mass star formation. Its YSO populations are thoroughly characterized. The region is therefore a prime target for the study of star formation. Here, we verify the performance of the SuperCAM 64 pixel heterodyne array on APEX. We give a descriptive overview of a set of wide-field CO(3-2) spectral cubes obtained towards the Orion GMC complex, aimed at characterizing the dynamics and structure of the extended molecular gas in diverse regions of the clouds, ranging from very active sites of clustered star formation in Ori…
A unique filament is identified in the {\it Herschel} maps of the Orion A giant molecular cloud. The filament, which, we name the Stick, is ruler-straight and at an early evolutionary stage. Transverse position-velocity diagrams show two velocity components closing in on the Stick. The filament shows consecutive rings/forks in C$^{18}$O(1-0) channel maps, which is reminiscent of structures generated by magnetic reconnection. We propose that the Stick formed via collision-induced magnetic reconnection (CMR). We use the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) code Athena++ to simulate the collision between t…
Understanding the initial properties of star-forming material and how they affect the star formation process is key. From an observational point of view, the feedback from young high-mass stars on future star formation properties is still poorly constrained. In the framework of the IRAM 30m ORION-B large program, we obtained observations of the translucent and moderately dense gas, which we used to analyze the kinematics over a field of 5 deg^2 around the filamentary structures. We used the ROHSA algorithm to decompose and de-noise the C18O(1-0) and 13CO(1-0) signals by taking the spatial cohe…
Young star clusters (YSCs) with resolved stellar populations are well suited for studying star-cluster formation. In most cases, the (pre-main-sequence) stellar populations found in the YSCs are coeval with an intrinsic age spread of up to 1Myr. Such observations can be understood as the YSCs having formed in one burst, which star formation was truncated by stellar feedback. The recent discovery that the colour-magnitude diagram of the Orion Nebula Clusters (ONC) contains three well defined age-separated populations appears to shatter this model. The implication is that the ONC formed in three…
The abundances of interstellar CH+ and SH+ are not well understood as their most likely formation channels are highly endothermic. Using data from Herschel, we study the formation of CH+ and SH+ in a typical high UV-illumination photon-dominated region (PDR), the Orion Bar. Herschel/HIFI provides velocity-resolved data of CH+ 1-0 and 2-1 and three hyperfine transitions of SH+. Herschel/PACS provides information on the excitation and spatial distribution of CH+ (up to J=6-5). The widths of the CH+ 2-1 and 1-0 transitions are of ~5 km/s, significantly broader than the typical width of dense gas …
We compare the structure of star-forming molecular clouds in different regions of Orion A to determine how the column density probability distribution function (N-PDF) varies with environmental conditions such as the fraction of young protostars. A correlation between the N-PDF slope and Class 0 protostar fraction has been previously observed in a low-mass star-formation region (Perseus) by Sadavoy; here we test if a similar correlation is observed in a high-mass star-forming region. We use Herschel data to derive a column density map of Orion A. We use the Herschel Orion Protostar Survey cata…

Young massive stars in the center of crowded star clusters are expected to undergo close dynamical encounters that could lead to energetic, explosive events. However, there has so far never been clear observational evidence of such a remarkable phenomenon. We here report new interferometric observations made with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) that indicate the well known enigmatic wide-angle outflow located in the Orion BN/KL star-forming region to have been produced by such a violent explosion during the disruption of a massive young stellar system, and that this was caused by a close dynamic…
The relative abundances of singly-deuterated methanol isotopologues, [CH$_{2}$DOH]/[CH$_{3}$OD], in star-forming regions deviate from the statistically expected ratio of 3. In Orion KL, the nearest high-mass star-forming region to Earth, the singly-deuterated methanol ratio is about 1, and the cause for this observation has been explored through theory for nearly three decades. We present high-angular resolution observations of Orion KL using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array to map small-scale changes in CH$_{3}$OD column density across the nebula, which provide a new avenue to…
The abundance of CH+ and OH and excitation are predicted to be enhanced by the presence of vibrationally excited H2 or hot gas (~500-1000 K) in PDRs with high incident FUV radiation field. The excitation may also originate in dense gas (>10^5 cm-3) followed by nonreactive collisions. Previous observations suggest that the CH+ and OH correlate with dense and warm gas, and formation pumping contributes to CH+ excitation. We examine the spatial distribution of the CH+ and OH emission in the Orion Bar to establish their physical origin and main formation and excitation mechanisms. We present spati…
This paper continues our study of the foreground population to the Orion molecular clouds. The goal is to characterize the foreground population north of NGC 1981 and to investigate the star formation history in the large Orion star-forming region. We focus on a region covering about 25 square degrees, centered on the $ε$ Orionis supergiant (HD 37128, B0\,Ia) and covering the Orion Belt asterism. We used a combination of optical (SDSS) and near-infrared (2MASS) data, informed by X-ray (\textit{XMM-Newton}) and mid-infrared (WISE) data, to construct a suite of color-color and color-magnitude di…
We have investigated the formation and kinematics of sub-mm continuum cores in the Orion A molecular cloud. A comparison between sub-mm continuum and near infrared extinction shows a continuum core detection threshold of $A_V\sim$ 5-10 mag. The threshold is similar to the star formation extinction threshold of $A_V\sim$ 7 mag proposed by recent work, suggesting a universal star formation extinction threshold among clouds within 500 pc to the Sun. A comparison between the Orion A cloud and a massive infrared dark cloud G28.37+0.07 indicates that Orion A produces more dense gas within the extinc…
Based on the 850 $μ$m dust continuum data from SCUBA-2 at James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT), we compare overall properties of Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) in the $λ$ Orionis cloud to those of PGCCs in the Orion A and B clouds. The Orion A and B clouds are well known active star-forming regions, while the $λ$ Orionis cloud has a different environment as a consequence of the interaction with a prominent OB association and a giant Hii region. PGCCs in the $λ$ Orionis cloud have higher dust temperatures ($Td=16.13\pm0.15$ K) and lower values of dust emissivity spectral index ($ β=1.65\pm…
Protoplanetary disk surveys by the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) are now probing a range of environmental conditions, from low-mass star-forming regions like Lupus to massive OB clusters like $σ$ Orionis. Here we conduct an ALMA survey of protoplanetary disks in $λ$ Orionis, a ~5 Myr old OB cluster in Orion, with dust mass sensitivities comparable to the surveys of nearby regions (~0.4 $M_\oplus$). We assess how massive OB stars impact planet formation, in particular from the supernova that may have occurred ~1 Myr ago in the core of $λ$ Orionis; studying these effects i…
Using the NANTEN2 Observatory, we carried out a molecular line study of high-mass star forming regions with reflection nebulae, NGC 2068 and NGC 2071, in Orion in the 13CO(J=2-1) transition. The 13CO distribution shows that there are two velocity components at 9.0 and 10.5 km/s . The blue-shifted component is in the northeast associated with NGC 2071, whereas the red-shifted component is in the southwest associated with NGC 2068. The total intensity distribution of the two clouds shows a gap of ~1 pc, suggesting that they are detached at present. A detailed spatial comparison indicates that th…
We explore scenarios for the dynamical ejection of stars BN and x from source I in the Kleinmann-Low nebula of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC), which is important for being the closest region of massive star formation. This ejection would cause source I to become a close binary or a merger product of two stars. We thus consider binary-binary encounters as the mechanism to produce this event. By running a large suite of $N$-body simulations, we find that it is nearly impossible to match the observations when using the commonly adopted masses for the participants, especially a source I mass of $7…
The [CII] $158\,μ\mathrm{m}$ fine-structure line is one of the dominant coolants of the neutral interstellar medium. It is hence one of the brightest far-infrared emission lines and can be observed not only in star-forming regions throughout the Galaxy, but also in the diffuse interstellar medium and in distant galaxies. [CII] line emission has been suggested to be a powerful tracer of star-formation. We aim to understand the origin of [CII] emission and its relation to other tracers of interstellar gas and dust. This includes a study of the heating efficiency of interstellar gas as traced by …
Massive stars have a strong impact on their local environments. However, how stellar feedback regulates star formation is still under debate. In this context, we studied the chemical properties of 80 dense cores in the Orion molecular cloud complex composed of the Orion A (39 cores), B (26 cores), and lambda Orionis (15 cores) clouds using multiple molecular line data taken with the Korean Very Long Baseline Interferometry Network (KVN) 21-m telescopes. The lambda Orionis cloud has an H ii bubble surrounding the O-type star lambda Ori, and hence it is exposed to the ultraviolet (UV) radiation …
We study whether polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be a weighty source of small hydrocarbons in photo-dissociation regions (PDRs). We modeled the evolution of 20 specific PAH molecules in terms of dehydrogenation and destruction of the carbon skeleton under the physical conditions of two well-studied PDRs, the Orion Bar and the Horsehead nebula which represent prototypical examples of PDRs irradiated by "high" and "low" ultraviolet radiation field. PAHs are described as microcanonical systems. The acetylene molecule is considered as the main carbonaceous fragment of the PAH dissociat…
The prevalence of substructures in $\sim1-10$ Myr old protoplanetary disks, which are often linked to planet formation, has raised the question of how early such features form, and as a corollary, how early planet formation begins. Here we present observations of seven protostellar disks (aged $\sim0.1-1$ Myr) from the VLA/ALMA Nascent Disk and Multiplicity Survey of Orion Protostars (VANDAM: Orion) that show clear substructures, thereby demonstrating that these features can form early in the lifetimes of disks. We use simple analytic models as well as detailed radiative transfer modeling to c…
The low-frequency sky may reveal some of the secrets yet to be discovered and until recently, molecules had never been detected within interstellar clouds at frequencies below 700MHz (Lovas, 2003) . Following the pilot survey towards the Galactic Centre at 103--133MHz with the Murchison Widefield Array (Tremblay, 2017), we surveyed 400 degree squared centered on the Orion KL nebula from 99--170MHz. Orion is a nearby region of active star formation and known to be a chemically rich environment. In this paper, we present tentative detections of nitric oxide and its isotopologues, singularly deut…
We use the $\mathit{Gaia}$ DR2 distances of about 700 mid-infrared selected young stellar objects in the benchmark giant molecular cloud Orion A to infer its 3D shape and orientation. We find that Orion A is not the fairly straight filamentary cloud that we see in (2D) projection, but instead a cometary-like cloud oriented toward the Galactic plane, with two distinct components: a denser and enhanced star-forming (bent) Head, and a lower density and star-formation quieter $\sim$75 pc long Tail. The true extent of Orion A is not the projected $\sim$40 pc but $\sim$90 pc, making it by far the la…
One model for the origin of typical galactic star clusters such as the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) is that they form via the rapid, efficient collapse of a bound gas clump within a larger, gravitationally-unbound giant molecular cloud. However, simulations in support of this scenario have thus far have not included the radiation feedback produced by the stars; radiative simulations have been limited to significantly smaller or lower density regions. Here we use the ORION adaptive mesh refinement code to conduct the first ever radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of the global collapse scenario fo…
We study evolution of hydrogenated amorphous carbon (HAC) grains under harsh UV radiation in photo-dissociation regions (PDRs) near young massive stars. Our aim is to evaluate the impact of the HAC grains on formation of observed small hydrocarbons: C$_2$H, C$_2$H$_2$, C$_3$H$^+$, C$_3$H, C$_3$H$_2$, C$_4$H, in PDRs. We developed a microscopic model of the HAC grains based on available experimental results. The model includes processes of photo- and thermodesorption, accretion of hydrogen and carbon atoms and subsequent formation of carbonaceous mantle on dust surface. H$_2$, CH$_4$, C$_2$H$_2…
The Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) is the most massive region of active star formation within a kpc of the Sun. Using Gaia DR3 parallaxes and proper motions, we examine the bulk motions of stars radially and tangentially relative to the cluster center. We find an age gradient with distance to the stars in the ONC, from 385 pc for the oldest stars, to 395 pc for the younger stars, indicating that the star forming front is propagating into the cloud. We find an organized signature of rotation of the central cluster, but it is present only in stars younger than 2 Myr. We also observe a net infall of …
We report ALMA and VLA continuum observations that potentially identify the four youngest protostars in the Orion Molecular Clouds taken as part of the Orion VANDAM program. These are distinguished by bright, extended, irregular emission at 0.87 mm and 8 mm and are optically thick at 0.87 mm. These structures are distinct from the disk or point-like morphologies seen toward the other Orion protostars. The 0.87 mm emission implies temperatures of 41-170 K, requiring internal heating. The bright 8 mm emission implies masses of 0.5 to 1.2 M_sun assuming standard dust opacity models. One source ha…
We analyze age distributions of two nearby rich stellar clusters, the NGC 2024 (Flame Nebula) and Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) in the Orion molecular cloud complex. Our analysis is based on samples from the MYStIX survey and a new estimator of pre-main sequence (PMS) stellar ages, AgeJX, derived from X-ray and near-infrared photometric data. To overcome the problem of uncertain individual ages and large spreads of age distributions for entire clusters, we compute median ages and their confidence intervals of stellar samples within annular subregions of the clusters. We find core-halo age gradien…
The formation of hydrides by gas-phase reactions between H2 and a heavy element atom is a very selective process. Reactions with ground-state neutral carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur atoms are very endoergic and have high energy barriers because the H2 molecule has to be fragmented before a hydride bond is formed. In cold interstellar clouds, these barriers exclude the formation of CH, OH, NH, and SH radicals through hydrogen abstraction reactions. Here we study a very energetically unfavorable process, the reaction of N(4S) atoms with H2 molecules. We calculated the reaction rate coeffici…
