Many scenarios of physics beyond the Standard Model predict the existence of new gauge singlets, which might be substantially lighter than the weak scale. The experimental constraints on additional scalars with masses in the MeV to GeV range could be significantly weakened if they interact predominantly with leptons rather than quarks. At an $e^+e^-$ collider, such a leptophilic scalar ($ϕ_L$) would be produced predominantly through radiation from a $τ$ lepton. We report herein a search for $e^+e^- \to τ^+τ^- ϕ_L$, $ϕ_L \to \ell^+\ell^-$ ($\ell=e,μ$) using data collected by the BABAR experiment at SLAC. No significant signal is observed, and we set limits on the $ϕ_L$ coupling to leptons in the range 0.04 < m$_{ϕ_L}$ < 7.0 GeV. These bounds significantly improve upon the current constraints, excluding almost entirely the parameter space favored by the observed discrepancy in the muon anomalous magnetic moment below 4 GeV at 90\% confidence level.
We investigate the prospects for detecting light leptophilic dark sectors with a missing-momentum experiment at NA64 running in muon mode. In particular, we consider models in which dark matter connects to the visible sector through a lepton- or muon-specific scalar mediator. These scalars can also account for the $\sim 3.5σ$ discrepancy between the measured and predicted values of $(g-2)_μ$ . We emphasize the complementarity between NA64-$μ$ and other terrestrial and astrophysical probes.
Two-Higgs-Doublet Model of Type-X in the large $\tanβ$ limit becomes leptophilic to allow a light pseudo-scalar $A$ and thus provides an explanation of the muon $g-2$ anomaly. Introducing a singlet scalar dark matter $S$ in this context, one finds that two important dark matter properties, nucleonic scattering and self-annihilation, are featured separately by individual couplings of dark matter to the two Higgs doublets. While one of the two couplings is strongly constrained by direct detection experiments, the other remains free to be adjusted for the relic density mainly through the process …
We propose a new class of $U(1)_{μ-τ}$ gauged model that can explain recent flavor anomalies such as muon $g-2$, $b\to sμ^+ μ^-$, as well as include a scalar dark matter candidate while satisfying all the phenomenological constraints. For this purpose, we add new vectorlike quarks and leptons as well as two inert singlet scalars, one leptophilic and the other leptophobic. In our model $b\to sμ^+ μ^-$ anomalies can be explained by loop induced interactions among the SM and exotic quarks and $Z'$ gauge boson. In our numerical analysis, we show allowed region of our model to be narrow, and it wou…
We discuss the phenomenology of a minimal model for GeV-scale Majorana dark matter (DM) coupled to the standard model lepton sector via a charged scalar singlet. The theoretical framework extends the Standard Model by two $SU(2)_L$ singlets: one charged Higgs boson and a singlet right-handed fermion. The latter plays the role of the DM candidate. We show that there is an anti-correlation between the spin-independent DM-Nucleus scattering cross-section ($σ_{\rm SI}$) and the DM relic density. We suggest a scenario that can be tested in both electron-electron and electron-positron collisions usi…
New gauge symmetries often appear in theories beyond the Standard Model. Here we study a model where lepton number is promoted to a gauge symmetry. Anomaly cancellation requires the introduction of additional leptons, the lightest of which is a natural leptophilic dark matter candidate. We perform a comprehensive study of both collider and dark matter phenomenology. Furthermore we find that the model exhibits a first order lepton number breaking phase transition in large regions of parameter space. The corresponding gravitational wave signal is computed, and its detectability at LISA and other…
Medium-energy electron beam-dump experiments provide an intense sources of secondary muons. These particles can be used to search for muon-coupling light dark scalars that may explain the $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly. We applied this idea to SLAC E137 experiment deriving new exclusion limits and evaluated the expected sensitivity for the planned Jefferson Lab BDX experiment (in case of null result report). The calculation is based on numerical simulations that include a realistic description of secondary muons generation in the dump, dark scalar production, propagation, and decay, and, finally, the decay…
A light leptophilic boson (scalar or pseudoscalar) has been postulated to explain the muon g-2 anomaly and could be a portal to dark matter. Realizing the leptophilic nature of a singlet boson in the framework of the two-Higgs-doublet-Model of type-X, we identify the parameter space viable for the explanation of the updated muon g-2 discrepancy. It is then shown that such a hypothetical particle will be unambiguously ruled out or discovered via the Yukawa process at a lepton collider designed as a Higgs factory.
We consider the possibility that dark matter (DM) only interacts with the Standard Model leptons, but not quarks at tree level, and analyze the future lepton collider prospects of such leptophilic DM in the monophoton and mono-$Z$ (both leptonic and hadronic) channels. Adopting a model-independent effective field theory framework, we consider all possible dimension-six operators of scalar-pseudoscalar (SP), vector-axial vector (VA), and tensor-axial tensor (TAT) types for a fermionic DM and derive the collider sensitivities on the effective cutoff scale $Λ$ as a function of the DM mass. As a c…
Recent investigations have suggested that the singlet six-quark combination $uuddss$ may be a deeply bound state $S$, called Sexaquark. An essentially stable state $S$ is a potentially excellent Dark Matter candidate. We present the first search for a stable, doubly strange six-quark state in the decays of $Υ(4S) \to Λ\barΛ$. Based on a data sample of $Υ(2S)$ and $Υ(3S)$ decays collected by the BABAR Experiment we report the most recent results and set stringent limits on the existence of such exotic particle.
A recent update from MiniBooNE has strengthened the observed $4.8σ$ excess of $e$-like events. Motivated by this and other notable deviations from standard model predictions, such as the muon $(g-2)$, we propose a solution to low energy anomalies through a dark neutrino sector. The model is renormalizable and can also explain light neutrino masses with an anomaly-free and dark $U(1)^\prime$ gauge symmetry broken at the GeV scale. Large kinetic mixing leads to s-channel production of heavy neutral leptons at $e^+e^-$ colliders, where we point out and explain a $\gtrsim 2σ$ excess observed in th…
We present some recent measurements performed using 514 fb-1 of $e^+e^-$ collisions collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric collider at SLAC. First we present a study of the decay tau -> K K_S nu, we measure the branching fraction B(tau -> K K_S nu), the mass spectrum of the K K_S system and obtain the spectral function. Our results are in agreement with and improve previous measurements. We then report a search for a dark boson A' produced in the reaction e+e- -> gamma A' in invisible final states A' -> chi anti-chi . We find no evidence for such processes and set 90% confi…
Recent Results from BABAR: Dark Matter, Axion-like Particles and Heavy Neutral Leptons, a contribution to the 2023 Electroweak session of the 57th Rencontres de Moriond
Dark showers from strongly interacting dark sectors that confine at the GeV scale can give rise to novel signatures at $e^+e^-$ colliders. In this work, we study the sensitivity of $B$ factory experiments to dark showers produced through an effective interaction arising from a heavy off-shell mediator. We show that a prospective search for displaced vertices from GeV-scale long-lived particles at Belle II can improve the sensitivity to dark showers substantially compared to an existing search at BaBar. We compare the sensitivity of searches for displaced signals to searches for promptly produc…
We scrutinize the XENON1T electron recoil excess in the scalar-singlet-extended dark matter effective field theory. We confront it with various astrophysical and laboratory constraints both in a general setup and in the more specific, recently proposed, variant with leptophilic $Z_2$-odd mediators. The latter also provide mass to the light leptons via suppressed $Z_2$ breaking, a structure that is well fitting with the nature of the observed excess and the discrete symmetry leads to non-standard dark-matter interactions. We find that the excess can be explained by neutrino--electron interactio…
We study the sensitivity of the NO$ν$A near detector to MeV-GeV dark matter while operating symbiotically with the neutrino program. We find that NO$ν$A could explore a large new region of parameter space over the next few years for dark matter masses below 100 MeV, reaching the thermal target for a scalar dark matter particle for some masses. This result represents a significant improvement over existing probes such as Babar, E137, and LSND.
We present a novel mechanism of electroweak baryogenesis where \textit{CP} violation occurs in a dark sector, comprised of standard model gauge singlets, thereby evading the strong electric dipole moment constraints. In this framework, the background of time-like component of a new gauge boson $Z^\prime_μ$, generated at electroweak temperatures, drives the electroweak sphaleron processes to create the required baryon asymmetry. We first discuss the crucial ingredients for this mechanism to work, and then show that all of them can be elegantly embedded in ultraviolet completions with spontaneou…
Constraints on selected mediator-based dark matter models and a scalar dark energy model using up to $37~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ $\sqrt s = 13$ TeV $pp$ collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2015-2016 are summarised in this paper. The results of experimental searches in a variety of final states are interpreted in terms of a set of spin-1 and spin-0 single-mediator dark matter simplified models and a second set of models involving an extended Higgs sector plus an additional vector or pseudo-scalar mediator. The searches considered in this paper constrain spin-1 leptophobic…
We study a generic leptophilic $U(1)_X$ extension of the standard model with a light gauge boson. The $U(1)_X$ charge assignments for the leptons are guided by lepton universality violating (LUV) observables in semileptonic $b \to s\ell\ell$ decays, muon anomalous magnetic moment and the origin of leptonic masses and mixing. Anomaly cancellation conditions require the addition of new chiral fermions in the model, one of which acts as a dark matter (DM) candidate when it is stabilised by an additional $\mathcal{Z}_2$ symmetry. From our analysis, we show two different possible models with simila…
Recent investigations have suggested that the six-quark combination uuddss could be a deeply bound state (S) that has eluded detection so far, and a potential dark matter candidate. We report the first search for a stable, doubly strange six-quark state in Upsilon -> S anti-Lambda anti-Lambda decays based on a sample of 90 million Upsilon(2S) and 110 million Upsilon(3S) decays collected by the BABAR experiment. No signal is observed, and 90% confidence level limits on the combined Upsilon(2S,3S) -> S anti-Lambda anti-Lambda branching fraction in the range (1.2-1.4)x10^-7 are derived for m_S < …
We explore the generation of the baryon asymmetry in an extension of the Standard Model where the lepton number is promoted to a $U(1)_\ell$ gauge symmetry with an associated $Z^\prime$ gauge boson. This is based on a novel electroweak baryogenesis mechanism first proposed by us in Ref. \cite{Carena:2018cjh}. Extra fermionic degrees of freedom - including a fermionic dark matter $χ$ - are introduced in the dark sector for anomaly cancellation. Lepton number is spontaneously broken at high scale and the effective theory, containing the Standard Model, the $Z^\prime$, the fermionic dark matter, …
Right-handed neutrinos with MeV to GeV mass are very promising candidates for dark matter (DM). Not only can they solve the missing satellite puzzle, the cusp-core problem of inner DM density profiles, and the too-big-to fail problem, {\it i.e.} that the unobserved satellites are too big to not have visible stars, but they can also account for the Standard Model (SM) neutrino masses at one loop. We perform a comprehensive study of the right-handed neutrino parameter space and impose the correct observed relic density and SM neutrino mass differences and mixings. We find that the DM masses are …
Many dark matter models generically predict invisible and displaced signatures at Belle II, but even striking events may be missed by the currently implemented search programme because of inefficient trigger algorithms. Of particular interest are final states with a single photon accompanied by missing energy and a displaced pair of electrons, muons, or hadrons. We argue that a displaced vertex trigger will be essential to achieve optimal sensitivity at Belle II. To illustrate this point, we study a simple but well-motivated model of thermal inelastic dark matter in which this signature natura…
Collider searches for dark sectors, new particles interacting only feebly with ordinary matter, have largely focused on identifying signatures of new mediators, leaving much of dark sector structures unexplored. In particular, the existence of dark matter bound states (darkonia) remains to be investigated. This possibility could arise in a simple model in which a dark photon ($A'$) is light enough to generate an attractive force between dark fermions. We report herein a search for a $J^{PC}= 1^{--}$ darkonium state, the $Υ_D$, produced in the reaction $e^+e^- \rightarrow γΥ_D, Υ_D \rightarrow …
