We address a challenging and practical task of labeling questions in speech in real time during telephone calls to emergency medical services in English, which embeds within a broader decision support system for emergency call-takers. We propose a novel multimodal approach to real-time sequence labeling in speech. Our model treats speech and its own textual representation as two separate modalities or views, as it jointly learns from streamed audio and its noisy transcription into text via automatic speech recognition. Our results show significant gains of jointly learning from the two modalities when compared to text or audio only, under adverse noise and limited volume of training data. The results generalize to medical symptoms detection where we observe a similar pattern of improvements with multimodal learning.
This paper presents our novel method to encode word confusion networks, which can represent a rich hypothesis space of automatic speech recognition systems, via recurrent neural networks. We demonstrate the utility of our approach for the task of dialog state tracking in spoken dialog systems that relies on automatic speech recognition output. Encoding confusion networks outperforms encoding the best hypothesis of the automatic speech recognition in a neural system for dialog state tracking on the well-known second Dialog State Tracking Challenge dataset.

Cognitive decline is a sign of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and there is evidence that tracking a person's eye movement, using eye tracking devices, can be used for the automatic identification of early signs of cognitive decline. However, such devices are expensive and may not be easy-to-use for people with cognitive problems. In this paper, we present a new way of capturing similar visual features, by using the speech of people describing the Cookie Theft picture - a common cognitive testing task - to identify regions in the picture prompt that will have caught the speaker's attention and elici…

Recent research shows end-to-end ASR systems can recognize overlapped speech from multiple speakers. However, all published works have assumed no latency constraints during inference, which does not hold for most voice assistant interactions. This work focuses on multi-speaker speech recognition based on a recurrent neural network transducer (RNN-T) that has been shown to provide high recognition accuracy at a low latency online recognition regime. We investigate two approaches to multi-speaker model training of the RNN-T: deterministic output-target assignment and permutation invariant traini…

The Dialog State Tracking Challenge 4 (DSTC 4) proposes several pilot tasks. In this paper, we focus on the spoken language understanding pilot task, which consists of tagging a given utterance with speech acts and semantic slots. We compare different classifiers: the best system obtains 0.52 and 0.67 F1-scores on the test set for speech act recognition for the tourist and the guide respectively, and 0.52 F1-score for semantic tagging for both the guide and the tourist.

Given the recent surge in developments of deep learning, this article provides a review of the state-of-the-art deep learning techniques for audio signal processing. Speech, music, and environmental sound processing are considered side-by-side, in order to point out similarities and differences between the domains, highlighting general methods, problems, key references, and potential for cross-fertilization between areas. The dominant feature representations (in particular, log-mel spectra and raw waveform) and deep learning models are reviewed, including convolutional neural networks, variant…

Acoustic-to-articulatory inversion (AAI) methods estimate articulatory movements from the acoustic speech signal, which can be useful in several tasks such as speech recognition, synthesis, talking heads and language tutoring. Most earlier inversion studies are based on point-tracking articulatory techniques (e.g. EMA or XRMB). The advantage of rtMRI is that it provides dynamic information about the full midsagittal plane of the upper airway, with a high 'relative' spatial resolution. In this work, we estimated midsagittal rtMRI images of the vocal tract for speaker dependent AAI, using MGC-LS…

In this thesis, we propose an artificial auditory system that gives a robot the ability to locate and track sounds, as well as to separate simultaneous sound sources and recognising simultaneous speech. We demonstrate that it is possible to implement these capabilities using an array of microphones, without trying to imitate the human auditory system. The sound source localisation and tracking algorithm uses a steered beamformer to locate sources, which are then tracked using a multi-source particle filter. Separation of simultaneous sound sources is achieved using a variant of the Geometric S…

Target speech extraction, which extracts a single target source in a mixture given clues about the target speaker, has attracted increasing attention. We have recently proposed SpeakerBeam, which exploits an adaptation utterance of the target speaker to extract his/her voice characteristics that are then used to guide a neural network towards extracting speech of that speaker. SpeakerBeam presents a practical alternative to speech separation as it enables tracking speech of a target speaker across utterances, and achieves promising speech extraction performance. However, it sometimes fails whe…

For speech research, ultrasound tongue imaging provides a non-invasive means for visualizing tongue position and movement during articulation. Extracting tongue contours from ultrasound images is a basic step in analyzing ultrasound data but this task often requires non-trivial manual annotation. This study presents an open source tool for fully automatic tracking of tongue contours in ultrasound frames using neural network based methods. We have implemented and systematically compared two convolutional neural networks, U-Net and DenseU-Net, under different conditions. Though both models can p…

One usage of medical ultrasound imaging is to visualize and characterize human tongue shape and motion during a real-time speech to study healthy or impaired speech production. Due to the low-contrast characteristic and noisy nature of ultrasound images, it might require expertise for non-expert users to recognize tongue gestures in applications such as visual training of a second language. Moreover, quantitative analysis of tongue motion needs the tongue dorsum contour to be extracted, tracked, and visualized. Manual tongue contour extraction is a cumbersome, subjective, and error-prone task.…
Prosody is usually defined in terms of the three distinct but interacting domains of pitch, intensity and duration patterning, or, more generally, as phonological and phonetic properties of 'suprasegmentals', speech segments which are larger than consonants and vowels. Rather than taking this approach, the concept of multiple time domains for prosody processing is taken up, and methods of time domain analysis are discussed: annotation mining with timing dispersion measures, time tree induction, oscillator models in phonology and phonetics, and finally the use of the Amplitude Envelope Modulati…
