We introduce Jukebox, a model that generates music with singing in the raw audio domain. We tackle the long context of raw audio using a multi-scale VQ-VAE to compress it to discrete codes, and modeling those using autoregressive Transformers. We show that the combined model at scale can generate high-fidelity and diverse songs with coherence up to multiple minutes. We can condition on artist and genre to steer the musical and vocal style, and on unaligned lyrics to make the singing more controllable. We are releasing thousands of non cherry-picked samples at https://jukebox.openai.com, along with model weights and code at https://github.com/openai/jukebox
In this work, we demonstrate how a publicly available, pre-trained Jukebox model can be adapted for the problem of audio source separation from a single mixed audio channel. Our neural network architecture, which is using transfer learning, is quick to train and the results demonstrate performance comparable to other state-of-the-art approaches that require a lot more compute resources, training data, and time. We provide an open-source code implementation of our architecture (https://github.com/wzaielamri/unmix)

We demonstrate that language models pre-trained on codified (discretely-encoded) music audio learn representations that are useful for downstream MIR tasks. Specifically, we explore representations from Jukebox (Dhariwal et al. 2020): a music generation system containing a language model trained on codified audio from 1M songs. To determine if Jukebox's representations contain useful information for MIR, we use them as input features to train shallow models on several MIR tasks. Relative to representations from conventional MIR models which are pre-trained on tagging, we find that using repres…
Current AI-generated music lacks fundamental principles of good compositional techniques. By narrowing down implementation issues both programmatically and musically, we can create a better understanding of what parameters are necessary for a generated composition nearly indistinguishable from that of a master composer.
A common approach to generating symbolic music using neural networks involves repeated sampling of an autoregressive model until the full output sequence is obtained. While such approaches have shown some promise in generating short sequences of music, this typically has not extended to cases where the final target sequence is significantly longer, for example an entire piece of music. In this work we propose a network trained in an adversarial process to generate entire pieces of solo shakuhachi music, in the form of symbolic notation. The pieces are intended to refer clearly to traditional s…

Generating music has a few notable differences from generating images and videos. First, music is an art of time, necessitating a temporal model. Second, music is usually composed of multiple instruments/tracks with their own temporal dynamics, but collectively they unfold over time interdependently. Lastly, musical notes are often grouped into chords, arpeggios or melodies in polyphonic music, and thereby introducing a chronological ordering of notes is not naturally suitable. In this paper, we propose three models for symbolic multi-track music generation under the framework of generative ad…
Algorithmic music composition is a way of composing musical pieces with minimal to no human intervention. While recurrent neural networks are traditionally applied to many sequence-to-sequence prediction tasks, including successful implementations of music composition, their standard supervised learning approach based on input-to-output mapping leads to a lack of note variety. These models can therefore be seen as potentially unsuitable for tasks such as music generation. Generative adversarial networks learn the generative distribution of data and lead to varied samples. This work implements …

In this paper we present a method for algorithmic melody generation using a generative adversarial network without recurrent components. Music generation has been successfully done using recurrent neural networks, where the model learns sequence information that can help create authentic sounding melodies. Here, we use DC-GAN architecture with dilated convolutions and towers to capture sequential information as spatial image information, and learn long-range dependencies in fixed-length melody forms such as Irish traditional reel.
Deep generative models such as Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) and Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have recently been applied to style and domain transfer for images, and in the case of VAEs, music. GAN-based models employing several generators and some form of cycle consistency loss have been among the most successful for image domain transfer. In this paper we apply such a model to symbolic music and show the feasibility of our approach for music genre transfer. Evaluations using separate genre classifiers show that the style transfer works well. In order to improve the fidelity of th…
Analysing music in the field of machine learning is a very difficult problem with numerous constraints to consider. The nature of audio data, with its very high dimensionality and widely varying scales of structure, is one of the primary reasons why it is so difficult to model. There are many applications of machine learning in music, like the classifying the mood of a piece of music, conditional music generation, or popularity prediction. The goal for this project was to develop a genre-conditional generative model of music based on Mel spectrograms and evaluate its performance by comparing i…

Learning a mapping between two unrelated domains-such as image and audio, without any supervision is a challenging task. In this work, we propose a distance-preserving generative adversarial model to translate images of human faces into an audio domain. The audio domain is defined by a collection of musical note sounds recorded by 10 different instrument families (NSynth \cite{nsynth2017}) and a distance metric where the instrument family class information is incorporated together with a mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) feature. To enforce distance-preservation, a loss term that pen…

It has been shown recently that deep convolutional generative adversarial networks (GANs) can learn to generate music in the form of piano-rolls, which represent music by binary-valued time-pitch matrices. However, existing models can only generate real-valued piano-rolls and require further post-processing, such as hard thresholding (HT) or Bernoulli sampling (BS), to obtain the final binary-valued results. In this paper, we study whether we can have a convolutional GAN model that directly creates binary-valued piano-rolls by using binary neurons. Specifically, we propose to append to the gen…

FusionGAN is a novel genre fusion framework for music generation that integrates the strengths of generative adversarial networks and dual learning. In particular, the proposed method offers a dual learning extension that can effectively integrate the styles of the given domains. To efficiently quantify the difference among diverse domains and avoid the vanishing gradient issue, FusionGAN provides a Wasserstein based metric to approximate the distance between the target domain and the existing domains. Adopting the Wasserstein distance, a new domain is created by combining the patterns of the …
Removing reverb from reverberant music is a necessary technique to clean up audio for downstream music manipulations. Reverberation of music contains two categories, natural reverb, and artificial reverb. Artificial reverb has a wider diversity than natural reverb due to its various parameter setups and reverberation types. However, recent supervised dereverberation methods may fail because they rely on sufficiently diverse and numerous pairs of reverberant observations and retrieved data for training in order to be generalizable to unseen observations during inference. To resolve these proble…
The field of Automatic Music Generation has seen significant progress thanks to the advent of Deep Learning. However, most of these results have been produced by unconditional models, which lack the ability to interact with their users, not allowing them to guide the generative process in meaningful and practical ways. Moreover, synthesizing music that remains coherent across longer timescales while still capturing the local aspects that make it sound ``realistic'' or ``human-like'' is still challenging. This is due to the large computational requirements needed to work with long sequences of …
Improving controllability or the ability to manipulate one or more attributes of the generated data has become a topic of interest in the context of deep generative models of music. Recent attempts in this direction have relied on learning disentangled representations from data such that the underlying factors of variation are well separated. In this paper, we focus on the relationship between disentanglement and controllability by conducting a systematic study using different supervised disentanglement learning algorithms based on the Variational Auto-Encoder (VAE) architecture. Our experimen…
Recent improvements in generative adversarial network (GAN) training techniques prove that progressively training a GAN drastically stabilizes the training and improves the quality of outputs produced. Adding layers after the previous ones have converged has proven to help in better overall convergence and stability of the model as well as reducing the training time by a sufficient amount. Thus we use this training technique to train the model progressively in the time and pitch domain i.e. starting from a very small time value and pitch range we gradually expand the matrix sizes until the end…

Research on automatic music generation has seen great progress due to the development of deep neural networks. However, the generation of multi-instrument music of arbitrary genres still remains a challenge. Existing research either works on lead sheets or multi-track piano-rolls found in MIDIs, but both musical notations have their limits. In this work, we propose a new task called lead sheet arrangement to avoid such limits. A new recurrent convolutional generative model for the task is proposed, along with three new symbolic-domain harmonic features to facilitate learning from unpaired lead…
"Art is the lie that enables us to realize the truth." - Pablo Picasso. For centuries, humans have dedicated themselves to producing arts to convey their imagination. The advancement in technology and deep learning in particular, has caught the attention of many researchers trying to investigate whether art generation is possible by computers and algorithms. Using generative adversarial networks (GANs), applications such as synthesizing photorealistic human faces and creating captions automatically from images were realized. This survey takes a comprehensive look at the recent works using GANs…

Most existing neural network models for music generation explore how to generate music bars, then directly splice the music bars into a song. However, these methods do not explore the relationship between the bars, and the connected song as a whole has no musical form structure and sense of musical direction. To address this issue, we propose a Multi-model Multi-task Hierarchical Conditional VAE-GAN (Variational Autoencoder-Generative adversarial networks) networks, named MIDI-Sandwich, which combines musical knowledge, such as musical form, tonic, and melodic motion. The MIDI-Sandwich has two…

Our goal is to be able to build a generative model from a deep neural network architecture to try to create music that has both harmony and melody and is passable as music composed by humans. Previous work in music generation has mainly been focused on creating a single melody. More recent work on polyphonic music modeling, centered around time series probability density estimation, has met some partial success. In particular, there has been a lot of work based off of Recurrent Neural Networks combined with Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RNN-RBM) and other similar recurrent energy based models…

The deep learning community has witnessed an exponentially growing interest in self-supervised learning (SSL). However, it still remains unexplored how to build a framework for learning useful representations of raw music waveforms in a self-supervised manner. In this work, we design Music2Vec, a framework exploring different SSL algorithmic components and tricks for music audio recordings. Our model achieves comparable results to the state-of-the-art (SOTA) music SSL model Jukebox, despite being significantly smaller with less than 2% of parameters of the latter. The model will be released on…
We showcase an unsupervised method that repurposes deep models trained for music generation and music tagging for audio source separation, without any retraining. An audio generation model is conditioned on an input mixture, producing a latent encoding of the audio used to generate audio. This generated audio is fed to a pretrained music tagger that creates source labels. The cross-entropy loss between the tag distribution for the generated audio and a predefined distribution for an isolated source is used to guide gradient ascent in the (unchanging) latent space of the generative model. This …
Despite the central role that melody plays in music perception, it remains an open challenge in music information retrieval to reliably detect the notes of the melody present in an arbitrary music recording. A key challenge in melody transcription is building methods which can handle broad audio containing any number of instrument ensembles and musical styles - existing strategies work well for some melody instruments or styles but not all. To confront this challenge, we leverage representations from Jukebox (Dhariwal et al. 2020), a generative model of broad music audio, thereby improving per…
Existing automatic music generation approaches that feature deep learning can be broadly classified into two types: raw audio models and symbolic models. Symbolic models, which train and generate at the note level, are currently the more prevalent approach; these models can capture long-range dependencies of melodic structure, but fail to grasp the nuances and richness of raw audio generations. Raw audio models, such as DeepMind's WaveNet, train directly on sampled audio waveforms, allowing them to produce realistic-sounding, albeit unstructured music. In this paper, we propose an automatic mu…

Deep learning has rapidly become the state-of-the-art approach for music generation. However, training a deep model typically requires a large training set, which is often not available for specific musical styles. In this paper, we present augmentative generation (Aug-Gen), a method of dataset augmentation for any music generation system trained on a resource-constrained domain. The key intuition of this method is that the training data for a generative system can be augmented by examples the system produces during the course of training, provided these examples are of sufficiently high quali…

Sound modelling is the process of developing algorithms that generate sound under parametric control. There are a few distinct approaches that have been developed historically including modelling the physics of sound production and propagation, assembling signal generating and processing elements to capture acoustic features, and manipulating collections of recorded audio samples. While each of these approaches has been able to achieve high-quality synthesis and interaction for specific applications, they are all labour-intensive and each comes with its own challenges for designing arbitrary c…

To train a machine learning model is necessary to take numerous decisions about many options for each process involved, in the field of sequence generation and more specifically of music composition, the nature of the problem helps to narrow the options but at the same time, some other options appear for specific challenges. This paper takes the framework proposed in a previous research that did not consider rhythm to make a series of design decisions, then, rhythm support is added to evaluate the performance of two RNN memory cells in the creation of monophonic music. This paper proposes a framework which is able to generate a sequence of three-dimensional human dance poses for a given music. The proposed framework consists of three components: a music feature encoder, a pose generator, and a music genre classifier. We focus on integrating these components for generating a realistic 3D human dancing move from music, which can be applied to artificial agents and humanoid robots. The trained dance pose generator, which is a generative autoregressive model, is able to synthesize a dance sequence longer than 5,000 pose frames. Experimental results of generated …
Despite phenomenal progress in recent years, state-of-the-art music separation systems produce source estimates with significant perceptual shortcomings, such as adding extraneous noise or removing harmonics. We propose a post-processing model (the Make it Sound Good (MSG) post-processor) to enhance the output of music source separation systems. We apply our post-processing model to state-of-the-art waveform-based and spectrogram-based music source separators, including a separator unseen by MSG during training. Our analysis of the errors produced by source separators shows that waveform model…

We propose an application of sequence generative adversarial networks (SeqGAN), which are generative adversarial networks for discrete sequence generation, for creating polyphonic musical sequences. Instead of a monophonic melody generation suggested in the original work, we present an efficient representation of a polyphony MIDI file that simultaneously captures chords and melodies with dynamic timings. The proposed method condenses duration, octaves, and keys of both melodies and chords into a single word vector representation, and recurrent neural networks learn to predict distributions of …
