The interaction between spin and nanomechanical degrees of freedom attracts interest from the viewpoint of basic science and device applications. We study the magnon current induced by the torsional oscillation of ferromagnetic nanomechanical cantilever. We find that a finite Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction emerges by the torsional oscillation, which is described by the spin gauge field, and the DM interaction leads to the detectably-large magnon current with frequency same as that of the torsional oscillation. Our theory paves the way for studying torsional spin-nanomechanical phenomena by using the spin gauge field.
We experimentally studied a strongly coupled magnon-photon system via microwave transmission measurements. An anti-resonance, i.e. the suppression of the microwave transmission, is observed, indicating a relative phase change between the magnon response and the driving microwave field. We show that this anti-resonance feature can be used to interpret the phase evolution of the coupled magnon-microwave system and apply this technique to reveal the phase evolution of magnon dark modes. Our work provides a standard procedure for the phase analysis of strongly coupled systems, enabling the phase c…
Dynamical theory of angle-resolved electron energy loss and gain spectroscopies of phonons and magnons in transmission electron microscopy including multiple scattering effects
Taking all the magnon modes into account, we derive the skyrmion dynamics in response to a weak external drive. A skyrmion has rotational symmetry and the magnon modes can be characterized by an angular momentum. For a weak distortion of a skyrmion, only the magnon modes with an angular momentum $|m|=1$ govern the dynamics of skyrmion topological center. The skyrmion inertia is determined by the magnon modes in the continuum spectrum. For a skyrmion driven by a magnetic field gradient or by a spin transfer torque generated by a current, the dynamical response is practically instantaneous. This…
Ferromagnetic (FM) manganites, a group of likely half-metallic oxides, are of special interest not only because they are a testing ground of the classical doubleexchange interaction mechanism for the colossal magnetoresistance, but also because they exhibit an extraordinary arena of emergent phenomena. These emergent phenomena are related to the complexity associated with strong interplay between charge, spin, orbital, and lattice. In this review, we focus on the use of inelastic neutron scattering to study the spin dynamics, mainly the magnon excitations in this class of FM metallic materials…

Spin and photonic systems are at the heart of modern information devices and emerging quantum technologies. An interplay between electron-hole pairs (excitons) in semiconductors and collective spin excitations (magnons) in magnetic crystals would bridge these heterogeneous systems, leveraging their individual assets in novel interconnected devices. Here, we report the magnon-exciton coupling at the interface between a magnetic thin film and an atomically-thin semiconductor. Our approach allies the long-lived magnons hosted in a film of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) to strongly-bound excitons in a …
We report on optical transmission spectroscopy of the Cr-based frustrated triangular antiferromagnets CuCrO2 and alpha-CaCr2O4, and the spinels CdCr2O4 and ZnCr2O4 in the near-infrared to visible-light frequency range. We explore the possibility to search for spin correlations far above the magnetic ordering temperature and for anomalies in the magnon lifetime in the magnetically ordered state by probing exciton-magnon sidebands of the spin-forbidden crystal-field transitions of the Cr3+ ions (spin S = 3/2). In CuCrO2 and alpha-CaCr2O4 the appearance of fine structures below T_N is assigned to…
We use electrical detection, in combination with microwave transmission, to investigate both resonant and non-resonant magnon-photon coupling at room temperature. Spin pumping in a dynamically coupled magnon-photon system is found to be distinctly different from previous experiments. Characteristic coupling features such as modes anti-crossing, line width evolution, peculiar line shape, and resonance broadening are systematically measured and consistently analyzed by a theoretical model set on the foundation of classical electrodynamic coupling. Our experimental and theoretical approach pave t…
We present results of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) experiments and micromagnetic simulations for a distorted, 2D Kagome artificial spin ice. The distorted structure is created by continuously modulating the 2D primitive lattice translation vectors of a periodic honeycomb lattice, according to an aperiodic Fibonacci sequence used to generate 1D quasicrystals. Experimental data and micromagnetic simulations show the Fibonacci distortion causes broadening and splitting of FMR modes into multiple branches, which accompany the increasing number of segment lengths and orientations that develop with…

The magnetic order, spin dynamics, and crystal structure of the multiferroic Sr0.56Ba0.44MnO3 have been investigated using neutron and x-ray scattering. Ferroelectricity develops at TC=305 K with a polarization of 4.2 microC/cm2 associated with the displacements of the Mn ions, while the Mn4+ spins order below TN = 200 K into a simple G-type commensurate magnetic structure. Below TN the ferroelectric order decreases dramatically demonstrating that the two order parameters are strongly coupled. The ground state spin dynamics are characterized by a spin gap of 4.6(5) meV and the magnon density o…
The dynamical fluorescent microthermal imaging (FMI) experiment has been used to investigate the phonon-magnon interaction in the 1D Heisenberg antiferromagnet La5Ca9Cu24O41. This material shows highly anisotropic heat conductivity due to the efficient magnetic heat transport along the spin ladders in the compound. To extract information on the phonon-magnon interaction we modelled the dynamic heat transport experiment using a two temperature model approach, taking both the crystal as well as the PMMA/EuTTA fluorescent heat imaging layer into account. The simulations are carried out by the fin…

Complex low-temperature ordered states in chiral magnets are typically governed by a competition between multiple magnetic interactions. The chiral-lattice multiferroic Cu2OSeO3 became the first insulating helimagnetic material in which a long-range order of topologically stable spin vortices known as skyrmions was established. Here we employ state-of-the-art inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to comprehend the full three-dimensional spin excitation spectrum of Cu2OSeO3 over a broad range of energies. Distinct types of high- and low-energy dispersive magnon modes separated by an extensive ener…
