This study is a part of the Cosmicflows-4 project with the aim of measuring the distances of more than ~10,000 spiral galaxies in the local universe up to ~15,000 km/s. New HI linewidth information has come primarily from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA Survey. Photometry of our sample galaxies has been carried out in optical (SDSS u, g, r, i, z) and infrared (WISE W1 and W2) bands. Inclinations have been determined using an online graphical interface accessible to a collaboration of citizen scientists. Galaxy distances are measured based on the correlation between the rotation rate of spirals and their absolute luminosity, known as the Tully-Fisher Relation (TFR). In this study, we present the calibration of the TFR using a subsample of ~600 spirals located in 20 galaxy clusters. Correlations among such observables as color, surface brightness, and relative HI content are explored in an attempt to reduce the scatter about the TFR with the goal of obtaining more accurate distances. A preliminary determination of the Hubble constant from the distances and velocities of the calibrator clusters is H0=76.0+-1.1(stat.)+-2.3(sys.) km/s/Mpc.
This paper involves a data release of the observational campaign: Cosmicflows with Spitzer (CFS). Surface photometry of the 1270 galaxies constituting the survey is presented. An additional ~ 400 galaxies from various other Spitzer surveys are also analyzed. CFS complements the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies, that provides photometry for an additional 2352 galaxies, by extending observations to low galactic latitudes (|b|<30 degrees). Among these galaxies are calibrators, selected in K band, of the Tully-Fisher relation. The addition of new calibrators demonstrate the robustne…
We present the distances of 9792 spiral galaxies lying within 15,000 km/s using the relation between luminosity and rotation rate of spiral galaxies. The sample is dominantly, but not exclusively, drawn from galaxies detected in the course of the ALFALFA HI survey with the Arecibo Telescope. Relations between \hi line widths and luminosity are calibrated at SDSS u, g, r, i, z bands and WISE W1 and W2 bands. By exploiting secondary parameters, particularly color indices, we address discrepancies between measured distances at different wave bands with unprecedented detail. We provide a catalog t…
The interstellar gas in spiral galaxies can constitute a significant fraction of the baryon mass and it has been demonstrated that the sum of stellar and gas components correlates well with the kinematic signature of the total mass content, the widths of HI line profiles. The correlation of baryonic mass with HI line widths is used here to obtain distances for 9984 galaxies extending to ~0.05c. The sample is HI flux limited and a correction is required to account for an HI selection bias. The absolute scale is established by 64 galaxies with known distances from studies of Cepheid variables an…
We explore the use of the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (bTFR) as a new distance indicator. Advances in near-IR imaging and stellar population models, plus precise rotation curves, have reduced the scatter in the bTFR such that distance is the dominant source of uncertainty. Using 50 galaxies with accurate distances from Cepheids or tip magnitude of the red giant branch, we calibrate the bTFR on a scale independent of $H_o$. We then apply this calibrated bTFR to 95 independent galaxies from the SPARC sample, using CosmicFlows-3 velocities, to deduce the local value of $H_o$. We find $H_o$ = 7…
In order to determine what processes govern the assembly history of galaxies with rotating disks, we examine the stellar mass Tully-Fisher relation over a wide range in redshift partitioned according to whether or not galaxies contain a prominent bulge. Using our earlier Keck spectroscopic sample, for which bulge/total parameters are available from analyses of HST images, we find that bulgeless disk galaxies with z > 0.8 present a significant offset from the local Tully-Fisher relation whereas, at all redshifts probed, those with significant bulges fall along the local relation. Our results su…
In this study, we present an update of a compilation of line width measurements of neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) galaxy spectra at 21 cm wavelength. Our All Digital HI (ADHI) catalog consists of the previous release augmented with our new HI observations and an analysis of archival data. This study provides the required HI information to measure the distances of spiral galaxies through the application of the Tully-Fisher (TF) relation. We conducted observations at the Green Bank telescope (GBT) and reprocessed spectra obtained at the Nancay radiotelescope by the Nancay Interstellar Baryons Lega…
The WALLABY pilot survey has been conducted using the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP). The integrated 21-cm HI line spectra are formed in a very different manner compared to usual single-dish spectra Tully-Fisher measurements. It is thus extremely important to ensure that slight differences (e.g. biases due to missing flux) are quantified and understood in order to maximise the use of the large amount of data becoming available soon. This article is based on four fields for which the data are scientifically interesting by themselves. The pilot data discussed here consist of 614 galaxy spectr…
Through extended integrations using the recently-installed deep depletion CCD on the red arm of the Keck I Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph, we present new measurements of the resolved spectra of 70 morphologically-selected star-forming galaxies with i_AB<24.1 in the redshift range 1<z<1.7. Using the formalism introduced in Paper I of this series and available HST ACS images, we successfully recover rotation curves using the extended emission line distribution of [O II] 3727 A to 2.2 times the disk scale radius for a sample of 42 galaxies. Combining these measures with stellar masses derive…
A recent work (arXiv:2104.14481) has found a statistically significant transition in the Baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR) using low redshift data ($z<0.1$), with the transitions occurring at about 9 and 17 Mpc. Motivated by this finding, we carry out a variant of this analysis by fitting the data to an augmented BTFR, where both the exponent as well as normalization constant vary as a function of distance. We find that both the exponent and normalization constant show only a marginal variation with distance, and are consistent with a constant value, to within $2σ$. We also checked to see …
We measure the Tully-Fisher relations of 14 lenticular galaxies (S0s) and 14 spirals. We use two measures of rotational velocity. One is derived directly from observed spatially-resolved stellar kinematics and the other from the circular velocities of mass models that include a dark halo and whose parameters are constrained by detailed kinematic modelling. Contrary to the naive expectations of theories of S0 formation, we find no significant difference between the Tully-Fisher relations of the two samples when plotted as functions of both brightness and stellar mass.
The space density distribution of galaxies in the absolute magnitude - rotation velocity plane: a volume-complete Tully-Fisher relation from CALIFA stellar kinematics
We investigate a theory of dark matter called wave dark matter, also known as scalar field dark matter (SFDM) and boson star dark matter or Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) dark matter (also see axion dark matter), and its relation to the Tully-Fisher relation. We exhibit two boundary conditions that give rise to Tully-Fisher-like relations for spherically symmetric static wave dark matter halos: (BC1) Fixing a length scale at the outer edge of wave dark matter halos gives rise to a Tully-Fisher-like relation of the form $M/v^4=\text{constant}$. (BC2) Fixing the density of dark matter at the out…
In this paper we combine high resolution N-body simulations with a semi analytical model of galaxy formation to study the effects of a possible Warm Dark Matter (WDM) component on the observable properties of galaxies. We compare three WDM models with a dark matter mass of 0.5, 0.75 and 2.0 keV, with the standard Cold Dark Matter case. For a fixed set of parameters describing the baryonic physics the WDM models predict less galaxies at low (stellar) masses, as expected due to the suppression of power on small scales, while no substantial difference is found at the high mass end. However these …
We study different incarnations of the Tully-Fisher (TF) relation for the Local Volume (LV) galaxies taken from Updated Nearby Galaxy Catalog. The UNGC sample contains 656 galaxies with $W_{50}$ HI-line-width estimates, mostly belonging to low mass dwarfs. Of them, 296 objects have distances measured with accuracy better than 10%. For the sample of 331 LV galaxies having baryonic masses $\log M_{bar} > 5.8 \log M_\odot$ we obtain a relation $\log M_{bar}= 2.49 \log W_{50} + 3.97$ with observed scatter of 0.38 dex. The largest factors affecting the scatter are observational errors in $K$-band m…
We study the HI K-band Tully-Fisher relation and the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation for a sample of 16 early-type galaxies, taken from the ATLAS3D sample, which all have very regular HI disks extending well beyond the optical body (> 5 R_eff). We use the kinematics of these disks to estimate the circular velocity at large radii for these galaxies. We find that the Tully-Fisher relation for our early-type galaxies is offset by about 0.5-0.7 magnitudes from the relation for spiral galaxies. The residuals with respect to the spiral Tully-Fisher relation correlate with estimates of the stellar mas…
We study the gas kinematics traced by the 21-cm emission of a sample of six HI$-$rich low surface brightness galaxies classified as ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs). Using the 3D kinematic modelling code $\mathrm{^{3D}}$Barolo we derive robust circular velocities, revealing a startling feature: HI$-$rich UDGs are clear outliers from the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation, with circular velocities much lower than galaxies with similar baryonic mass. Notably, the baryon fraction of our UDG sample is consistent with the cosmological value: these UDGs are compatible with having no "missing baryons" withi…
We show how the hypothesis that galaxy discs conform to self-similar dynamics leads to an objective identification, in the data, of an annular region of the optical disc which is such that, corresponding to the classical Tully-Fisher scaling law defined on the exterior annular boundary, there is a similar scaling law defined on the interior annular boundary. This result is confirmed at the level of statistical certainty over several large ORC samples. Furthermore, the same analysis provides insight into the uncertainties associated with the best way of defining Vmax, the rotation velocity used…
We investigate a theory of dark matter called wave dark matter, also known as scalar field dark matter (SFDM) and boson star dark matter or Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) dark matter, in spherical symmetry and its relation to the Tully-Fisher relation. We show that fixing the oscillation frequency of wave dark matter near the edge of dark galactic halos implies a Tully-Fisher-like relation for those halos. We then describe how this boundary condition, which is roughly equivalent to fixing the half-length of the exponentially decaying tail of each galactic halo mass profile, may yield testable …
We present the final distance measurements for the 2MASS Tully-Fisher (2MTF) survey. The final 2MTF catalogue contains 2,062 nearby spiral galaxies in the CMB frame velocity range of 600 km s$^{-1}$ $< cz < 10,000$ km s$^{-1}$ with a mean velocity of 4,805 km s$^{-1}$. The main update in this release is the replacement of some archival HI data with newer ALFALFA data. Using the 2MTF template relation, we calculate the distances and peculiar velocities of all 2MTF galaxies. The mean uncertainties of the linear distance measurements are around 22\% in all three infrared bands. 2MTF measurements …
If dark matter is dissipative then the distribution of dark matter within galactic halos can be governed by dissipation, heating and hydrostatic equilibrium. Previous work has shown that a specific model, in the framework of mirror dark matter, can explain several empirical galactic scaling relations. It is shown here that this dynamical halo model implies a quasi-isothermal dark matter density, $ρ(r) = ρ_0 r_0^2/(r^2 + r_0^2)$, where the core radius, $r_0$, scales with disk scale length, $r_D$, via $r_0/{\rm kpc} = 1.4\left(r_D/{\rm kpc}\right)$. Additionally, the product $ρ_0 r_0$ is roughly…
We present spatially-resolved HI kinematics of 32 spiral galaxies which have Cepheid or/and Tip of the Red Giant Branch distances, and define a calibrator sample for the Tully-Fisher relation. The interferometric HI data for this sample were collected from available archives and supplemented with new GMRT observations. This paper describes an uniform analysis of the HI kinematics of this inhomogeneous data set. Our main result is an atlas for our calibrator sample that presents global HI profiles, integrated HI column-density maps, HI surface density profiles and, most importantly, detailed ki…
Most rotationally-supported galaxies strictly follow the Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation (BFTR) linking circular velocity with baryon content. This firmly established empirical relationship is currently thought to have origins in either modified gravity or dark matter halo effects. In this work, we construct a physically-based version of the BFTR founded on known scaling relations, disk dynamics (acceleration, jerk and snap) that also reveals the foundational elements responsible for this phenomenology. We employ the Milky Way galaxy as an exemplar to quantitatively compare the two leading theo…
We construct a multiparametric Tully-Fisher (TF) relation for a large sample of edge-on galaxies from the Revised Flat Galaxy Catalog using HI data from the EDD database and parameters from the EGIS catalog. We incorporate a variety of additional parameters including structural parameters of edge-on galaxies in different bandpasses. Besides the rotation curve maximum, only the HI-to-optical luminosity ratio and optical colours play a statistically significant role in the multiparametric TF relation. We are able to decrease the standard deviation of the multiparametric TF relation down to 0.32 …
We explore the Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation in the Local Group. Rotationally supported Local Group galaxies adhere precisely to the relation defined by more distant galaxies. For pressure supported dwarf galaxies, we determine the scaling factor $β_c$ that relates their observed velocity dispersion to the equivalent circular velocity of rotationally supported galaxies of the same mass such that $V_o = β_c σ_*$. For a typical mass-to-light ratio $Υ_* = 2\;\mathrm{M}_{\odot}/\mathrm{L}_{\odot}$ in the $V$-band, we find that $β_c = 2$. More generally, $\log β_c = 0.25 \log Υ_* +0.226$. This pro…
We estimate the stellar masses of disk galaxies with two independent methods: a photometrically self-consistent color$-$mass-to-light ratio relation (CMLR) from population synthesis models, and the Baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR) calibrated by gas rich galaxies. These two methods give consistent results. The CMLR correctly converts distinct Tully-Fisher relations in different bands into the same BTFR. The BTFR is consistent with $M_b \propto V_f^4$ over nearly six decades in mass, with no hint of a change in slope over that range. The intrinsic scatter in the BTFR is negligible, implying…
We present a novel 2D flux density model for observed HI emission lines combined with a Bayesian stacking technique to measure the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation below the nominal detection threshold. We simulate a galaxy catalogue, which includes HI lines described either with Gaussian or busy function profiles, and HI data cubes with a range of noise and survey areas similar to the MeerKAT International Giga-Hertz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration (MIGHTEE) survey. With prior knowledge of redshifts, stellar masses and inclinations of spiral galaxies, we find that our model can reconstruct the…
In recent work, Lelli et al. (2016) argue that the tightness of the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR) of the SPARC galaxy sample, and the weakness of the correlation of its residuals with effective radius, pose challenges to LCDM cosmology. In this Letter we calculate the statistical significance of these results in the framework of halo abundance matching, which imposes a canonical galaxy-halo connection. Taking full account of sample variance among SPARC-like realisations of the parent halo population, we find the scatter in the predicted BTFR to be 3.6 sigma too high, but the correlatio…
The relation between early type galaxy size, surface brightness and velocity dispersion, "the fundamental plane", has long been understood as resulting from equilibrium in their largely pressure supported stellar dynamics. The dissipation and feedback involved in reaching such an equilibrium through merger formation of these galaxies over cosmic time can be responsible for the orientation of the plane. We see a correlation between surface brightness enhancement and youth in the 6dF Galaxy Survey. Correlations of this `tilt' with stellar mass, age, concentration, shape and metallicity now point…
In this paper we investigate the statistical properties of the Tully-Fisher relation for a sample of 32 galaxies with measured distances from the Cepheid period-luminosity relation and/or TRGB stars. We take advantage of panchromatic photometry in 12 bands (from FUV to 4.5 $μ$m) and of spatially resolved HI kinematics. We use these data together with three kinematic measures ($W^{i}_{50}$, $V_{max}$ and $V_{flat}$) extracted from the global HI profiles or HI rotation curves, so as to construct 36 correlations allowing us to select the one with the least scatter. We introduce a tightness parame…
The Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation (BTFR) links baryonic mass of rotationally supported galaxies to their flat disk velocities. A popular form of the BTFR linked to MOND is based on an empirically determined characteristic acceleration, a0 that serves as the constant of proportionality. In this work, we propose an alternative, parametric form of the BTFR employing individual galactic properties from the SPARC galaxy database. Based on this data we find that a precise mass-velocity correlation is possible taking into account galactic disk radius and two dynamical related properties; mass discre…
If advanced extraterrestrial civilizations choose to construct vast numbers of Dyson spheres to harvest radiation energy, this could affect the characteristics of their host galaxies. Potential signatures of such astroengineering projects include reduced optical luminosity, boosted infrared luminosity and morphological anomalies. Here, we apply a technique pioneered by Annis (1999) to search for Kardashev type III civilizations in disk galaxies, based on the predicted offset of these galaxies from the optical Tully-Fisher relation. By analyzing a sample of 1359 disk galaxies, we are able to se…
Nearby isolated galaxies ($z\sim 0$), are considered immerse within a thermal bath at 2.73 K. However the dwarf galaxies orbiting these galaxies are also subject to additional radiation from their hosts, so they are within a thermal bath slightly warmer. We claim that this thermal effect can explain several properties of the dwarf galaxies, such as their rotation curves, their radial acceleration relations (RAR) and why the velocity-mass dependence at the faint end of the Tully Fisher Relation (TFR) is steeper for these galaxies. In the Debye Gravitational Theory (DGT), the galaxies properties…
We examine the Einstein equation coupled to the Klein-Gordon equation for a complex-valued scalar field. These two equations together are known as the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system. In the low-field, non-relativistic limit, the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system reduces to the Poisson-Schrödinger system. We describe the simplest solutions of these systems in spherical symmetry, the spherically symmetric static states, and some scaling properties they obey. We also describe some approximate analytic solutions for these states. The EKG system underlies a theory of wave dark matter, also known as scalar…
There is a large observational scatter toward low velocities in the stellar mass Tully-Fisher relation if disturbed and compact objects are included. However, this scatter can be eliminated if one replaces rotation velocity with $\rm S_{\rm 0.5}$, a quantity that includes a velocity dispersion term added in quadrature with the rotation velocity. In this work we use a large suite of hydrodynamic N-body galaxy merger simulations to explore a possible mechanism for creating the observed relations. Using mock observations of the simulations, we test for the presence of observational effects and ex…
GalICS 2.0 is a new semianalytic code to model the formation and evolution of galaxies in a cosmological context. N-body simulations based on a Planck cosmology are used to construct halo merger trees, track subhaloes, compute spins and measure concentrations. The accretion of gas onto galaxies and the morphological evolution of galaxies are modelled with prescriptions derived from hydrodynamic simulations. Star formation and stellar feedback are described with phenomenological models (as in other semianalytic codes). GalICS 2.0 computes rotation speeds from the gravitational potential of the …
We construct mass models of 28 S0-Sb galaxies. The models have an axisymmetric stellar component and a NFW dark halo and are constrained by observed Ks-band photometry and stellar kinematics. The median dark halo virial mass is 10^12.8 Msun, and the median dark/total mass fraction is 20% within a sphere of radius r_1/2, the intrinsic half-light radius, and 50% within R_25. We compare the Tully-Fisher relations of the spirals and S0s in the sample and find that S0s are 0.5 mag fainter than spirals at Ks-band and 0.2 dex less massive for a given rotational velocity. We use this result to rule ou…
In a LCDM cosmology, the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR) is expected to show significant intrinsic scatter resulting from the mass-concentration relation of dark matter halos and the baryonic-to-halo mass ratio. We study the BTFR using a sample of 118 disc galaxies (spirals and irregulars) with data of the highest quality: extended HI rotation curves (tracing the outer velocity) and Spitzer photometry at 3.6 $μ$m (tracing the stellar mass). Assuming that the stellar mass-to-light ratio (M*/L) is nearly constant at 3.6 $μ$m, we find that the scatter, slope, and normalization of the BTFR s…
High-accuracy HI profiles and linewidths are presented for inclined ($(b/a)^o < 0.5$) spiral galaxies in the southern Zone of Avoidance (ZOA). These galaxies define a sample for use in the determinations of peculiar velocities using the near-infrared Tully-Fisher (TF) relation. The sample is based on the 394 HI-selected galaxies from the Parkes HI Zone of Avoidance survey (HIZOA). Follow-up narrow-band Parkes HI observations were obtained in 2010 and 2015 for 290 galaxies, while for the further 104 galaxies, sufficiently high signal-to-noise spectra were available from the original HIZOA data.…
We study the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFR) at z=0 using 153 galaxies from the SPARC sample. We consider different definitions of the characteristic velocity from HI and H-alpha rotation curves, as well as HI line-widths from single-dish observations. We reach the following results: (1) The tightest BTFR is given by the mean velocity along the flat part of the rotation curve. The orthogonal intrinsic scatter is extremely small (6%) and the best-fit slope is 3.85+/-0.09, but systematic uncertainties may drive the slope from 3.5 to 4.0. Other velocity definitions lead to BTFRs with system…
We study the stellar mass Tully-Fisher relation (TFR, stellar mass versus rotation velocity) for a morphologically blind selection of emission line galaxies in the field at redshifts 0.1 $<$ z $<$ 0.375. Kinematics ($σ_g$, V$_{rot}$) are measured from emission lines in Keck/DEIMOS spectra and quantitative morphology is measured from V- and I-band Hubble images. We find a transition stellar mass in the TFR, $\log$ M$_*$ = 9.5 M$_{\odot}$. Above this mass, nearly all galaxies are rotation-dominated, on average more morphologically disk-like according to quantitative morphology, and lie on a rela…
We present SAMI-HI, a survey of the atomic hydrogen content of 296 galaxies with integral field spectroscopy available from the SAMI Galaxy Survey. The sample spans nearly 4 dex in stellar mass ($M_\star = 10^{7.4}-10^{11.1}~ \rm M_\odot$), redshift $z<0.06$, and includes new Arecibo observations of 153 galaxies, for which we release catalogues and HI spectra. We use these data to compare the rotational velocities obtained from optical and radio observations and to show how systematic differences affect the slope and scatter of the stellar-mass and baryonic Tully-Fisher relations. Specifically…
Galaxies covering several orders of magnitude in stellar mass and a variety of Hubble types have been shown to follow the "Radial Acceleration Relation" (RAR), a relationship between $g_{\rm obs}$, the observed circular acceleration of the galaxy, and $g_{\rm bar}$, the acceleration due to the total baryonic mass of the galaxy. For accelerations above $10^{10}~{\rm m \, s}^{-2}$, $g_{\rm obs}$ traces $g_{\rm bar}$, asymptoting to the 1:1 line. Below this scale, there is a break in the relation such that $\rm g_{\rm obs} \sim g_{\rm bar}^{1/2}$. We show that the RAR slope, scatter and the accel…
We present stellar population models to calculate the mass-to-light ratio ($Υ_*$) based on galaxy's colors ranging from $GALEX$ FUV to Spitzer IRAC1 at 3.6$μ$m. We present a new composite bulge+disk $Υ_*$ model that considers the varying contribution from bulges and disks based on their optical and near-IR colors. Using these colors, we build plausible star formation histories and chemical enrichment scenarios based on the star formation rate-stellar mass and mass-metallicity correlations for star-forming galaxies. The most accurate prescription is to use the actual colors for the bulge and di…
In 2016 McGaugh, Lelli and Schombert established a universal Radial Acceleration Relation for centripetal accelerations in spiral galaxies. Their work showed a strong correlation between observed centripetal accelerations and those predicted by luminous Newtonian matter alone. Through the use of the fitting function that they introduced, mass discrepancies in spiral galaxies can be constrained in a uniform manner that is completely determined by the baryons in the galaxies. Here we present a new empirical plot of the observed centripetal accelerations and the luminous Newtonian expectations, w…
We use KMOS Deep Survey (KDS) galaxies, combined with results from a range of spectroscopic studies in the literature, to investigate the evolution of the stellar-mass Tully-Fisher relation since z ~ 4. We determine the slope and normalisation of the local rotation-velocity -- stellar-mass (Vc - $M_{\star}$) relationship using a reference sample of local spiral galaxies; thereafter we fix the slope, and focus on the evolution of velocity normalisation with redshift. The rotation-dominated KDS galaxies at z ~ 3.5 have rotation velocities ~ -0.1 dex lower than local reference galaxies at fixed s…
We investigate the Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation (BTFR) in the $(100\,h^{-1}{\rm Mpc})^3$ Simba hydrodynamical galaxy formation simulation together with a higher-resolution $(25\,h^{-1}{\rm Mpc})^3$ Simba run, for over $10,000$ disk-dominated, HI-rich galaxies. We generate simulated galaxy rotation curves from the mass distribution, which we show yields similar results to using the gas rotational velocities. From this we measure the galaxy rotation velocity $V_{\rm circ}$ using four metrics: $V_{\rm max}, V_{\rm flat}, V_{2R_e},$ and $V_{\rm polyex}$. We compare the predicted BTFR to the SPAR…
In this paper we carry out a preliminary study of the dependence of the Tully-Fisher Relation (TFR) with the width and intensity level of the absolute magnitude interval of a limited sample of 2411 galaxies taken from Mathewson \& Ford (1996). The galaxies in this sample do not differ significantly in morphological type, and are distributed over an $\sim11$-magnitude interval ($-24.4 < I < -13.0$). We take as directives the papers by Nigoche-Netro et al. (2008, 2009, 2010) in which they study the dependence of the Kormendy (KR), the Fundamental Plane (FPR) and the Faber-Jackson Relations (FJR)…
We present Tully-Fisher distances for 24 AGN host galaxies with black hole mass ($M_\textrm{BH}$) measurements from reverberation mapping, as well as the first calibration of the $V-$band Tully-Fisher relation. Combining our measurements of HI 21cm emission with $HST$ and ground-based optical and near-infrared images allows multiple distance measurements for 19 galaxies and single measurements for the remaining 5. Separation of the nucleus from its host galaxy via surface brightness decomposition yields galaxy-only luminosities, thus allowing measurements of the distance moduli free of contami…
We compare an observed Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relation (BTFR) from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) and HI-MaNGA surveys to a simulated BTFR from the cosmological magnetohydrodynamical simulation IllustrisTNG. To do so, we calibrate the BTFR of the local universe using 377 galaxies from the MaNGA and HI-MaNGA surveys, and perform mock 21 cm observations of matching galaxies from IllustrisTNG. The mock observations are used to ensure that the comparison with the observed galaxies is fair since it has identical measurement algorithms, observational limitations, bias…
