Automatic captioning of images is a task that combines the challenges of image analysis and text generation. One important aspect in captioning is the notion of attention: How to decide what to describe and in which order. Inspired by the successes in text analysis and translation, previous work have proposed the \textit{transformer} architecture for image captioning. However, the structure between the \textit{semantic units} in images (usually the detected regions from object detection model) and sentences (each single word) is different. Limited work has been done to adapt the transformer's internal architecture to images. In this work, we introduce the \textbf{\textit{image transformer}}, which consists of a modified encoding transformer and an implicit decoding transformer, motivated by the relative spatial relationship between image regions. Our design widen the original transformer layer's inner architecture to adapt to the structure of images. With only regions feature as inputs, our model achieves new state-of-the-art performance on both MSCOCO offline and online testing benchmarks.

In recent years, transformer structures have been widely applied in image captioning with impressive performance. For good captioning results, the geometry and position relations of different visual objects are often thought of as crucial information. Aiming to further promote image captioning by transformers, this paper proposes an improved Geometry Attention Transformer (GAT) model. In order to further leverage geometric information, two novel geometry-aware architectures are designed respectively for the encoder and decoder in our GAT. Besides, this model includes the two work modules: 1) a…

Image captioning using Encoder-Decoder based approach where CNN is used as the Encoder and sequence generator like RNN as Decoder has proven to be very effective. However, this method has a drawback that is sequence needs to be processed in order. To overcome this drawback some researcher has utilized the Transformer model to generate captions from images using English datasets. However, none of them generated captions in Bengali using the transformer model. As a result, we utilized three different Bengali datasets to generate Bengali captions from images using the Transformer model. Additiona…

In this paper, we consider the image captioning task from a new sequence-to-sequence prediction perspective and propose CaPtion TransformeR (CPTR) which takes the sequentialized raw images as the input to Transformer. Compared to the "CNN+Transformer" design paradigm, our model can model global context at every encoder layer from the beginning and is totally convolution-free. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model and we surpass the conventional "CNN+Transformer" methods on the MSCOCO dataset. Besides, we provide detailed visualizations of the self-attention …
Image captioning is shown to be able to achieve a better performance by using scene graphs to represent the relations of objects in the image. The current captioning encoders generally use a Graph Convolutional Net (GCN) to represent the relation information and merge it with the object region features via concatenation or convolution to get the final input for sentence decoding. However, the GCN-based encoders in the existing methods are less effective for captioning due to two reasons. First, using the image captioning as the objective (i.e., Maximum Likelihood Estimation) rather than a rela…

Current state-of-the-art image captioning models adopt autoregressive decoders, \ie they generate each word by conditioning on previously generated words, which leads to heavy latency during inference. To tackle this issue, non-autoregressive image captioning models have recently been proposed to significantly accelerate the speed of inference by generating all words in parallel. However, these non-autoregressive models inevitably suffer from large generation quality degradation since they remove words dependence excessively. To make a better trade-off between speed and quality, we introduce a…

Dense video captioning aims to generate text descriptions for all events in an untrimmed video. This involves both detecting and describing events. Therefore, all previous methods on dense video captioning tackle this problem by building two models, i.e. an event proposal and a captioning model, for these two sub-problems. The models are either trained separately or in alternation. This prevents direct influence of the language description to the event proposal, which is important for generating accurate descriptions. To address this problem, we propose an end-to-end transformer model for dens…

Image captioning aims to automatically generate a natural language description of a given image, and most state-of-the-art models have adopted an encoder-decoder framework. The framework consists of a convolution neural network (CNN)-based image encoder that extracts region-based visual features from the input image, and an recurrent neural network (RNN)-based caption decoder that generates the output caption words based on the visual features with the attention mechanism. Despite the success of existing studies, current methods only model the co-attention that characterizes the inter-modal in…

Transformer-based architectures have shown great success in image captioning, where object regions are encoded and then attended into the vectorial representations to guide the caption decoding. However, such vectorial representations only contain region-level information without considering the global information reflecting the entire image, which fails to expand the capability of complex multi-modal reasoning in image captioning. In this paper, we introduce a Global Enhanced Transformer (termed GET) to enable the extraction of a more comprehensive global representation, and then adaptively g…

Image Captioning (IC) has achieved astonishing developments by incorporating various techniques into the CNN-RNN encoder-decoder architecture. However, since CNN and RNN do not share the basic network component, such a heterogeneous pipeline is hard to be trained end-to-end where the visual encoder will not learn anything from the caption supervision. This drawback inspires the researchers to develop a homogeneous architecture that facilitates end-to-end training, for which Transformer is the perfect one that has proven its huge potential in both vision and language domains and thus can be use…

Recent research that applies Transformer-based architectures to image captioning has resulted in state-of-the-art image captioning performance, capitalising on the success of Transformers on natural language tasks. We propose "Areas of Attention", a novel attention-based model for automatic image captioning. Our approach models the dependencies between image regions, caption words, and the state of an RNN language model, using three pairwise interactions. In contrast to previous attention-based approaches that associate image regions only to the RNN state, our method allows a direct association between caption words and image regions. During training these associations are inferred from image-level captions, akin to weakly-supervised object detector training. These associations help to improve captioning…

Our experimental study represent the promising performance of our proposed method for image captioning.

Inspired by the human visual system which is driven by not only the task-specific top-down signals but also the visual stimuli, we in this work propose to use both types o…
