The conventional characterization of periodically driven systems usually necessitates the time-domain information beyond Floquet bands, hence lacking universal and direct schemes of measuring Floquet topological invariants. Here we propose a unified theory based on quantum quenches to characterize generic $d$-dimensional ($d$D) Floquet topological phases, in which the topological invariants are constructed with only minimal information of the static Floquet bands. For a $d$D phase which is initially static and trivial, we introduce the quench dynamics by suddenly turning on the periodic driving, and show that the quench dynamics exhibits emergent topological patterns in ($d-1$)D momentum subspaces where Floquet bands cross, from which the Floquet topological invariants are directly obtained. This prediction provides a simple and unified characterization, in which one can not only extract the number of conventional and anomalous Floquet boundary modes, but also identify the topologically protected singularities in the phase bands. The applications are illustrated with 1D and 2D models which are readily accessible in cold atom experiments. Our study opens a new framework for the characterization of Floquet topological phases.
Ultracold atomic gases in two dimensions tuned close to a p-wave Feshbach resonance were expected to exhibit topological superfluidity, but these were found to be experimentally unstable. We show that one can induce a topological Floquet superfluid if weakly interacting atoms are brought suddenly close ("quenched") to such a resonance, in the time before the instability kicks in. The resulting superfluid possesses Majorana edge modes, yet differs from a conventional Floquet system as it is not driven externally. Instead, the periodic modulation is self-generated by the dynamics.
We investigate radio-frequency (rf) spectroscopy, metal-to-superconductor tunneling, and ARPES as probes of isolated out-of-equilibrium quantum systems, and examine the crucial role played by the nonequilibrium distribution function. As an example, we focus on the induced topological time-periodic (Floquet) phase in a 2D $p+ip$ superfluid, following an instantaneous quench of the coupling strength. The post-quench Cooper pairs occupy a linear combination of "ground" and "excited" Floquet states, with coefficients determined by the distribution function. While the Floquet bandstructure exhibits…
Topological phases with a widely tunable number of edge modes have been extensively studied as a typical class of exotic states of matter with potentially important applications. Although several models have been shown to support such phases, they are not easy to realize in solid-state systems due to the complexity of various intervening factors. Inspired by the realization of synthetic spin-orbit coupling in a cold-atom system [Z. Wu {\it et al.}, Science \textbf{354}, 83 (2016)], we propose a periodic quenching scheme to realize large-topological-number phases with multiple edge modes in opt…
We propose to uncover the topology of a pseudo-Hermitian Chern insulator by quantum quench dynamics. The Bloch Hamiltonian of the pseudo-Hermitian Chern insulator is defined in the basis of the q-deformed Pauli matrices, which are related to the representation of the deformed algebras. We show the bulk-surface duality of the pseudo-Hermitian phases, then further build a concrete relation between the static band topology and quench dynamics, in terms of the time-averaged spin textures. The results are also generalized into a fully nonequilibrium case where the postquench evolution is governed b…
Dynamical kicking systems possess rich topological structures. In this work, we study Floquet states of matter in a non-Hermitian extension of double kicked rotor model. Under the on-resonance condition, we find various non-Hermitian Floquet topological phases, with each being characterized by a pair of topological winding numbers. A generalized mean chiral displacement is introduced to detect these winding numbers dynamically in two symmetric time frames. Furthermore, by mapping the system to a periodically quenched lattice model, we obtain the topological edge states and unravel the bulk-edg…
Periodic driving has emerged as a powerful experimental tool to engineer physical properties of isolated, synthetic quantum systems. However, due to the lack of energy conservation and heating effects, non-trivial (e.g., topological) many-body states in periodically driven (Floquet) systems are generally metastable. Therefore it is necessary to find strategies for preparing long-lived many-body states in Floquet systems. We develop a theoretical framework for describing the dynamical preparation of states in Floquet systems by a slow turn-on of the drive. We find that the dynamics of the syste…
We explore the physics of a Chern insulator subjected to a two step Floquet drive. We analytically obtain the phase diagram and show that the system can exhibit different topological phases characterized by presence and chirality of edge-modes in the two bulk gaps of the Floquet quasienergy spectrum, around $0$ and $π$. We find that the phase of the system depends on the mean but not on the amplitude of the drive. The bulk topological invariants characterizing the phases can be extracted by mapping the unitary evolution within a time period to an energetically trivial but topologically non-tri…
We report Floquet band engineering of long-range transport and direct imaging of Floquet-Bloch bands in an amplitude-modulated optical lattice. In one variety of Floquet-Bloch band we observe tunable rapid long-range high-fidelity transport of a Bose condensate across thousands of lattice sites. Quenching into an opposite-parity Floquet-hybridized band allows Wannier-Stark localization to be controllably turned on and off using modulation. A central result of this work is the use of transport dynamics to demonstrate direct imaging of a Floquet-Bloch band structure. These results demonstrate th…
We experimentally realized a time-periodically modulated 1D lattice for ultracold atoms featuring a pair of linear bands, each associated with a Floquet winding number: a topological invariant. These bands are spin-momentum locked and almost perfectly linear everywhere in the Brillouin zone (BZ), making this system a near-ideal realization of the 1D Dirac Hamiltonian. We characterized the Floquet winding number using a form of quantum state tomography, covering the BZ and following the micromotion through one Floquet period. Lastly, we altered the modulation timing to lift the topological prot…
We investigate a generic dynamical theory to characterize topological quantum phases by quantum quenches, and study the emergent topology of quantum dynamics when the quenches start from a deep or shallow trivial phase to topological regimes. Two dynamical schemes are examined: One is to characterize topological phases via quantum dynamics induced by a single quench along an arbitrary axis, and the other applies a sequence of quenches with respect to all (pseudo)spin axes. These two schemes are both built on the so-called dynamical bulk-surface correspondence, which shows that the $d$-dimensio…
Topological states of matter in non-Hermitian systems have attracted a lot of attention due to their intriguing dynamical and transport properties. In this study, we propose a periodically driven non-Hermitian lattice model in one-dimension, which features rich Floquet topological phases. The topological phase diagram of the model is derived analytically. Each of its non-Hermitian Floquet topological phases is characterized by a pair of integer winding numbers, counting the number of real 0- and π-quasienergy edge states at the boundaries of the lattice. Non-Hermiticity induced Floquet topolog…
The classification of topological Floquet systems with time-periodic Hamiltonians transcends that of static systems. For example, spinless fermions in periodically driven two-dimensional lattices are not completely characterized by the Chern numbers of the quasienergy bands, but rather by a set of winding numbers associated with the quasienergy gaps. We propose a scheme for measuring these winding numbers in a system of fermionic cold atoms in a periodically driven optical lattice efficiently and directly. It is based on the construction of a one-parameter family of experimentally feasible dri…
We propose a realistic scheme to construct anomalous Floquet Chern topological insulators using spin-1/2 particles carrying out a discrete-time quantum walk in a two-dimensional lattice. By Floquet engineering the quantum-walk protocol, an Aharonov-Bohm geometric phase is imprinted onto closed-loop paths in the lattice, thus realizing an abelian gauge field---the analog of a magnetic flux threading a two-dimensional electron gas. We show that in the strong field regime, when the flux per plaquette is a sizable fraction of the flux quantum, magnetic quantum walks give rise to nearly flat energy…
We present a brief overview of the phases and dynamics of ultracold bosons in an optical lattice in the presence of a tilt. We begin with a brief summary of the possible experimental setup for generating the tilt. This is followed by a discussion of the effective low-energy model for these systems and its equilibrium phases. We also chart the relation of this model to the recently studied system of ultracold Rydberg atoms. Next, we discuss the non-equilibrium dynamics of this model for quench, ramp and periodic protocols with emphasis on the periodic drive which can be understood in terms of a…
Semimetals exhibiting nodal lines or nodal surfaces represent a novel class of topological states of matter. While conventional Weyl semimetals exhibit momentum-space Dirac monopoles, these more exotic semimetals can feature unusual topological defects that are analogous to extended monopoles. In this work, we describe a scheme by which nodal rings and nodal spheres can be realized in synthetic quantum matter through well-defined periodic-driving protocols. As a central result of our work, we characterize these nodal defects through the quantum metric, which is a gauge-invariant quantity assoc…
We investigate a mechanism to transiently stabilize topological phenomena in long-lived quasi-steady states of isolated quantum many-body systems driven at low frequencies. We obtain an analytical bound for the lifetime of the quasi-steady states which is exponentially large in the inverse driving frequency. Within this lifetime, the quasi-steady state is characterized by maximum entropy subject to the constraint of fixed number of particles in the system's Floquet-Bloch bands. In such a state, all the non-universal properties of these bands are washed out, hence only the topological propertie…
We study the slow crossing of non-equilibrium quantum phase transitions in periodically-driven systems. We explicitly consider a spin chain with a uniform time-dependent magnetic field and focus on the Floquet state that is adiabatically connected to the ground state of the static model. We find that this {\it Floquet ground state} undergoes a series of quantum phase transitions characterized by a non-trivial topology. To dinamically probe these transitions, we propose to start with a large driving frequency and slowly decrease it as a function of time. Combining analytical and numerical metho…
The spin-orbit coupled degenerate Fermi gas provides a totally new platform to realize topological superfluids and related topological excitations. Previous studies have mainly focused on the properties of the ground state. Here we consider a two-dimensional Fermi gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling subject to a perpendicular Zeeman field. For this system, we have found that its ground state topological structure is captured by the spin texture, which is readily measurable in experiments. We show that, when the Zeeman field is suddenly quenched, dynamical topological phases can be realized. Mo…
Time crystals, a phase showing spontaneous breaking of time-translation symmetry, has been an intriguing subject for systems far away from equilibrium. Recent experiments found such a phase both in the presence and absence of localization, while in theories localization by disorder is usually assumed a priori. In this work, we point out that time crystals can generally exist in systems without disorder. A series of clean quasi-one-dimensional models under Floquet driving are proposed to demonstrate this unexpected result in principle. Robust time crystalline orders are found in the strongly in…
We study the quench dynamics of a topological $p$-wave superfluid with two competing order parameters, $Δ_\pm(t)$. When the system is prepared in the $p+ip$ ground state and the interaction strength is quenched, only $Δ_+(t)$ is nonzero. However, we show that fluctuations in the initial conditions result in the growth of $Δ_-(t)$ and chaotic oscillations of both order parameters. We term this behavior phase III'. In addition, there are two other types of late time dynamics -- phase I where both order parameters decay to zero and phase II where $Δ_+(t)$ asymptotes to a nonzero constant while $Δ…
