In magnetism, skyrmions correspond to classical three-dimensional spin textures characterized by a topological invariant that keeps track of the winding of the magnetization in real space, a property that cannot be easily generalized to the quantum case since the orientation of a quantum spin is in general ill-defined. Moreover, as we show, the quantum skyrmion state cannot be directly observed in modern experiments that probe the local magnetization of the system. However, we show that this novel quantum state can still be identified and fully characterized by a special local three-spin correlation function defined on neighbouring lattice sites -- the scalar chirality -- which reduces to the classical topological invariant for large systems, and which is shown to be nearly constant in the quantum skyrmion phase.

Multi-orbital optical lattices have been attracting rapidly growing research interests in the last several years, providing fascinating opportunities for orbital-based quantum simulations. Here, we consider bosonic atoms loaded in the degenerate $p$-orbital bands of a two-dimensional triangular optical lattice. This system is described by a multi-orbital Bose-Hubbard model. We find the confined atoms in this system develop spontaneous orbital polarization, which forms a chiral Skyrmion lattice pattern in a large regime of the phase diagram. This is in contrast to its spin analogue which largel…
Magnetic skyrmions have attracted enormous research interest since their discovery a decade ago. The non-trivial real-space topology of these nano-whirls leads to fundamentally interesting and technologically relevant consequences - the skyrmion Hall effect of the texture and the topological Hall effect of the electrons. Furthermore, it grants skyrmions in a ferromagnetic surrounding great stability even at small sizes, making skyrmions aspirants to become the carriers of information in the future. Still, the utilization of skyrmions in spintronic devices has not been achieved yet, among other…
The motion of a spin excitation across topologically non-trivial magnetic order exhibits a deflection that is analogous to the effect of the Lorentz force on an electrically charged particle in an orbital magnetic field. We used polarized inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the propagation of magnons (i.e., bosonic collective spin excitations) in a lattice of skyrmion tubes in manganese silicide. For wave vectors perpendicular to the skyrmion tubes, the magnon spectra are consistent with the formation of finely spaced emergent Landau levels that are characteristic of the fictitious mag…
Hall effects of electrons can be produced by an external magnetic field, spin orbit-coupling or a topologically non-trivial spin texture. The topological Hall effect (THE) - caused by the latter - is commonly observed in magnetic skyrmion crystals. Here, we show analogies of the THE to the conventional Hall effect (HE), the anomalous Hall effect (AHE), and the spin Hall effect (SHE). In the limit of strong coupling between conduction electron spins and the local magnetic texture the THE can be described by means of a fictitious, 'emergent' magnetic field. In this sense the THE can be mapped on…
We model quantum Hall skyrmions in graphene monolayer at quarter filling by a theory of CP3 fields and study the energy minimizing skyrmions in presence of valley pseudospin anisotropy and Zeeman coupling. We present a diagram of all types of skyrmions in a wide range of the anisotropy parameters. For each type of skyrmion, we visualize it on three Bloch spheres, and present the profiles of its texture on the graphene honeycomb lattice, thus providing references for the STM/STS imaging of spin-pseudospin textures in graphene monolayer in quantum Hall regime. Besides the spin and pseudospin sky…
We present a theory of magnetoelectric magnon-photon coupling in cavities hosting noncentrosymmetric magnets. Analogously to nonreciprocal phenomena in multiferroics, the magnetoelectric coupling is time-reversal and inversion asymmetric. This asymmetry establishes a means for exceptional tunability of magnon-photon coupling, which can be switched on and off by reversing the magnetization direction. Taking the multiferroic skyrmion-host Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ with ultralow magnetic damping as an example, we reveal the electrical activity of skyrmion eigenmodes and propose it for magnon-photon splittin…
Topological order is important in many aspects of condensed matter physics, and has been extended to bosonic systems. In this Letter we report on the nontrivial topology of the magnon bands in two distinct quantum skyrmion crystals appearing in zero external magnetic field. This is revealed by nonzero Chern numbers for some of the bands. As a bosonic analog of the quantum anomalous Hall effect, we show that topological magnons can appear in skyrmion crystals without explicitly breaking time-reversal symmetry with an external magnetic field. By tuning the value of the easy-axis anisotropy at ze…
Inspired by the recent achievements of the strong magnons- and spin textures-photons coupling via dipolar interaction, the coupling between magnons and the local resonances of spin textures through direct exchange interaction is expected but not realized yet. In this work, we demonstrated the coherent coupling between propagating magnons and local skyrmion resonances. Besides the Rabbi coupling gap (RCG) in the frequency field dispersion, a magnonic analog of polariton gap, polaragnonic band gap (PBG), is also observed in the frequency-wavenumber dispersion. The realization of coupling require…
Planar Topological Hall effect (PTHE) is known to arise from in-plane skyrmion tubes with an external magnetic field applied in the plane of the charge current. Here, we propose that the PTHE can robustly appear also from an unexpected source, the conical spin spiral, realizable in a variety of materials. We show that for both in-plane skyrmion tubes and conical spin spirals, the PTHE is two-fold symmetric with respect to the magnetic-field angle, while it is four-fold symmetric for 90$^{\circ}$-rotated domains of conical spin spirals. We predict that the symmetry and magnetic-field response o…
Strongly interacting fermionic systems host a variety of interesting quantum many-body states with exotic excitations. For instance, the interplay of strong interactions and the Pauli exclusion principle can lead to Stoner ferromagnetism, but the fate of this state remains unclear when kinetic terms are added. While in many lattice models the fermions' dispersion results in delocalization and destabilization of the ferromagnet, flat bands can restore strong interaction effects and ferromagnetic correlations. To reveal this interplay, here we propose to study the Hofstadter-Fermi-Hubbard model …

A superposition of spin helices can yield topological spin textures, such as skyrmion and hedgehog lattices. Based on the analogy with the moiré in optics, we study the magnetic and topological properties of such superpositions in a comprehensive way by modulating the interference pattern continuously. We find that the control of the angles between the superposed helices and the net magnetization yields successive topological transitions associated with pair annihilation of hedgehogs and antihedgehogs. Accordingly, emergent electromagnetic fields, magnetic monopoles and antimonopoles, and Dira…
We discuss detection strategies for fractional topological insulators (FTIs) realizing time-reversal invariant analogues of fractional quantum Hall systems in the Laughlin universality class. Focusing on transport measurements, we study the effect of magnetic perturbations on the edge modes. We find that the modes show unexpected robustness against magnetic backscattering for moderate couplings and edge interactions, allowing for various phase transitions signaling the FTI phase. We also describe protocols for extracting the universal integer m characterizing the phase and the edge interaction…
