By using the first-principles approach, we derive a system of three quantum kinetic equations governing the production and evolution of charged scalar particles by an electric field in an expanding universe. Analyzing the ultraviolet asymptotic behavior of the kinetic functions, we found the divergent parts of the electric current and the energy-momentum tensor of the produced particles and determined the corresponding counterterms. The renormalized system of equations is used to study the generation of electromagnetic fields during and after inflation in the kinetic coupling model $\mathcal{L}_{\rm EM}=-(1/4)f^{2}(ϕ)F_{μν}F^{μν}$ with the Ratra coupling function $f=\exp(βϕ/M_{p})$. It is found that the electric current of created particles is retarded with respect to the electric field. This leads to an oscillatory behavior of both quantities in agreement with the results obtained previously in phenomenological kinetic and hydrodynamical approaches.
We study an extension of quasi-single field model of inflation containing multiple semi-heavy isocurvaton fields using the Schwinger-Keldysh mechanism. We calculate the amplitudes and the shapes of the bispectrum and the trispectrum. We show that the diagrammatic approach associated with the Schwinger-Keldysh mechanism simplifies the analysis considerably compared to standard in-in formalism. This method is helpful to study the spectroscopy of masses and couplings of light and semi-heavy fields during inflation.
We revisit the efficiency of Schwinger mechanism in creating charged pairs during inflation. We consider a minimal setup of inflation in which the inflaton field is a complex scalar field charged under a $U(1)$ gauge field. There is a time dependent conformal coupling which pumps energy from the inflaton field to the gauge field to furnish a nearly constant background electric field energy density to drive the Schwinger mechanism. The coupling between the gauge field and the scalar field induces a time dependent effective mass for the inflaton field. The requirement of a long period of slow-ro…
When the inflaton couples to photons and amplifies electric fields, charged particles produced via the Schwinger effect can dominate the universe after inflation, which is dubbed as the Schwinger preheating. Using the hydrodynamic approach for the Boltzmann equation, we numerically study two cases, the Starobinsky inflation model with the kinetic coupling and the anisotropic inflation model. The Schwinger preheating is not observed in the latter model but occurs for a sufficiently large inflaton-photon coupling in the first model. We analytically address its condition and derive a general attr…
We study the Schwinger effect during inflation and its imprints on the primordial power spectrum and bispectrum. The produced charged particles by Schwinger effect during inflation can leave a unique angular dependence on the primordial spectra.
We study the generation of electromagnetic fields during inflation when the conformal invariance of Maxwell's action is broken by the kinetic coupling $f^{2}(ϕ)F_{μν}F^{μν}$ of the electromagnetic field to the inflaton field $ϕ$. We consider the case where the coupling function $f(ϕ)$ decreases in time during inflation and, as a result, the electric component of the energy density dominates over the magnetic one. The system of equations which governs the joint evolution of the scale factor, inflaton field, and electric energy density is derived. The backreaction occurs when the electric energy…
In the presence of a dilatonic coupling between an inflaton and a $U(1)$ gauge field, a persistent electric field (i.e., an anisotropic inflation) is obtained as a solution of the classical field equations. We introduce charged, massive, and conformally coupled fields into this model and study the pair production of charged particles. The semiclassical approach allows us to evaluate the induced current due to the pair production on the general dilatonic factor and electric field. Solving the field equations with the induced current, we find that the electric field shows a damped oscillation, w…
We study magnetogenesis in axionlike inflation driven by a pseudoscalar field $ϕ$ coupled axially to the electromagnetic (EM) field $(β/M_{p})ϕF_{μν}\tilde{F}^{μν}$ with dimensionless coupling constant $β$. A set of equations for the inflaton field, scale factor, and expectation values of quadratic functions of the EM field is derived. These equations take into account the Schwinger effect and the backreaction of generated EM fields on the Universe expansion. It is found that the backreaction becomes important when the EM energy density reaches the value $ρ_{\rm EM}\sim (\sqrt{2ε}/β)ρ_{\rm inf…
This pedagogical review aims at presenting the fundamental aspects of the theory of inflationary cosmological perturbations of quantum-mechanical origin. The analogy with the well-known Schwinger effect is discussed in detail and a systematic comparison of the two physical phenomena is carried out. In particular, it is demonstrated that the two underlying formalisms differ only up to an irrelevant canonical transformation. Hence, the basic physical mechanisms at play are similar in both cases and can be reduced to the quantization of a parametric oscillator leading to particle creation due to …

Using the kinetic approach, we study the impact of the charged particles dynamics due to the Schwinger effect on the electric field evolution during inflation. As a simple model of the electric field generation, we consider the kinetic coupling of the electromagnetic field to the inflaton via the term $f^{2}(ϕ)F_{μν}F^{μν}$ with the Ratra coupling function $f=\exp(βϕ/M_{p})$. The production of charged particles is taken into account in the Boltzmann kinetic equation through the Schwinger source term. Produced particles are thermalized due to collisions which we model by using the collision int…
We study the Schwinger mechanism for the pair production of fermions in the presence of an arbitrary time-dependent background electric field E(t) by directly evaluating the path integral. We obtain an exact non-perturbative result for the probability of fermion-antifermion pair production per unit time per unit volume per unit transverse momentum (of the fermion or antifermion) from the arbitrary time dependent electric field E(t) via Schwinger mechanism. We find that the exact non-perturbative result is independent of all the time derivatives d^nE(t)/dt^n, where n=1,2,....\infty. This result…
We analytically investigate the Schwinger pair production in the de Sitter background by using {\em the uniform asymptotic approximation method}, and show that the equation of motion in general has two turning points, and the nature of these points could be single, double, real or complex, depending on the choice of the free parameters involved in the theory. Different natures of these points lead to different electric currents. In particular, when $β\equiv m^2/H^2-9/4$ is positive, both turning points are complex, and the electric current due to the Schwinger process is highly suppressed, whe…
We explore the enhancement of an electromagnetic field in an inflationary background with an anti-conductive plasma of scalar particles. The scalar particles are created by Schwinger effect in curved spacetime and backreact to the electromagnetic field. The possibility of a negative conductivity was recently put forward in the context of the renormalization of the Schwinger induced current in de Sitter spacetime. While a negative conductivity enhances the produced magnetic field, we find that it is too weak to seed the observed intergalactic magnetic field today. This results on pair creation …
In a four dimensional inflation theory, a persistent electric field can be established by making the inflaton coupled to the gauge field like a dilaton. We investigate the pair production of scalar particles in the inflaton-driven electric field. In particular, we evaluate the induced current due to the pair production. The presence of the dilatonic coupling ensures the validity of the WKB approximation at the past and the future infinities, without tuning constant parameters. Thus, the semiclassical description is applicable in evaluating the induced current. Solving the field equations with …
We study the time-dependent solitonic gauge fields in scalar QED, in which a charged particle has the energy of reflectionless Pösch-Teller potential with natural quantum numbers. Solving the quantum master equation for quadratic correlation functions, we find the exact pair-production rates as polynomials of inverse square of hyperbolic cosine, which exhibit solitonic characteristics of a finite total pair production per unit volume and a non-oscillatory behavior for the entire period, and an exponentially decaying factor in asymptotic regions. It is shown that the solitonic gauge fields are …
We investigate non-thermal gravitino production after tribrid inflation in supergravity, which is a variant of supersymmetric hybrid inflation where three fields are involved in the inflationary model and where the inflaton field resides in the matter sector of the theory. In contrast to conventional supersymmetric hybrid inflation, where non-thermal gravitino production imposes severe constraints on the inflationary model, we find that the "non-thermal gravitino problem" is generically absent in models of tribrid inflation, mainly due to two effects: (i) With the inflaton in tribrid inflation…
We describe a simple model of chaotic inflation in supergravity where one can easily tune not only the basic cosmological parameters such as n_{s}, r, and f_NL, but also a possible (subdominant) cosmic string contribution to the CMB anisotropy.
In this proceeding we consider a massive charged scalar field in a uniform electric field background in a de~Sitter spacetime (dS). We compute the in-vacuum expectation value of the trace of the energy-momentum tensor for the created Schwinger pairs, and using adiabatic subtraction scheme the trace is regularized. The effect of the Schwinger pair creation on the evolution of the Hubble constant is investigated. We find that the production of the semiclassical pairs leads to a decay of the Hubble constant. Whereas, the production of a light scalar field in the weak electric field regime leads t…

The rate of Schwinger pair production due to an external electric field can be derived heuristically from the uncertainty principle. In the presence of a cosmological constant, it has been argued in the literature that the uncertainty principle receives a correction due to the background curvature, which is known as the "extended uncertainty principle" (EUP). We show that EUP does indeed lead to the correct result for Schwinger pair production rate in anti-de Sitter spacetime (the case for de Sitter spacetime is similar), provided that the EUP correction term is negative (positive for the de S…
We consider vacuum polarization from massless scalar electrodynamics in de Sitter inflation. The theory exhibits a 3+1 dimensional analogue of the Schwinger mechanism in which a photon mass is dynamically generated. The mechanism is generic for light scalar fields that couple minimally to gravity. The non-vanishing of the photon mass during inflation may result in magnetic fields on cosmological scales.
We consider particle production in $1+1$ dimensional thermal Anti-de Sitter space under the influence of a constant electric field. The vacuum-persistence amplitude is given by a non-relativistic tunnelling instanton once we interpret the system as being governed by an "equivalent" non-relativistic Schrödinger equation. Working in the WKB approximation, we calculate the tunnelling rate in anti de Sitter space at finite temperature and observe that the particle production rate is enhanced. Additionally, it is observed that there is a critical temperature beyond which the production rate is affe…
Spontaneous pair production from background fields or spacetimes is one of the most prominent phenomena predicted by quantum field theory. The Schwinger mechanism of production of charged pairs by a strong electric field and the Hawking radiation of all species of particles from a black hole are the consequence of nonperturbative quantum effects. In this review article, the vacuum structure and pair production is reviewed in the in-out formalism, which provides a consistent framework for quantum field theory in the sense that the complex action explains not only the vacuum persistence but also…
We introduce a canonical method for pair production by electromagnetic fields. The canonical method in the space-dependent gauge provides pair-production rate even for inhomogeneous fields. Further, the instanton action including all corrections leads to an accurate formula for the pair-production rate. We discuss various aspects of the canonical method and clarify terminology for pair production. We study pair production by charged black holes first by finding states of the field equation that describe pair production and then by applying the canonical method.
We consider a model of inflation which has recently been proposed in the literature and where inflation is induced by corrections to the energy density coming from the non-commutativity of spacetime. We show that the very rapid inflationary expansion typical of this model is responsible for a burst of particle production which ends inflation and leads to a radiation-dominated phase. We analytically estimate the energy density of these particles and we confront the results with more precise numerical calculations. We estimate the number of inflationary e-folds before the back-reaction of the ra…
We introduce inflationary models where the inflaton features a field dependent non-minimal derivative coupling to the Einstein tensor, that we name GNMDC. This Horndeski term gives new and distinguishable inflationary predictions in a framework that ameliorates possible problems related with gradient instabilities during the reheating stage. We examine the inflationary phenomenology using power law monomial and exponential potentials. We further elaborate on the implications of the inflaton-modulated GNMDC and construct GNMDC terms that can amplify the power spectrum of primordial perturbation…

We discuss quantum electrodynamics emerging in the vacua with anisotropic scaling. Systems with anisotropic scaling were suggested by Horava in relation to the quantum theory of gravity. In such vacua the space and time are not equivalent, and moreover they obey different scaling laws, called the anisotropic scaling. Such anisotropic scaling takes place for fermions in bilayer graphene, where if one neglects the trigonal warping effects the massless Dirac fermions have quadratic dispersion. This results in the anisotropic quantum electrodynamics, in which electric and magnetic fields obey diff…
This paper presents the derivation of Schwinger's gauge invariant result of $Im \cal{L}_{eff}$ upto one loop approximation, for particle production in an uniform electric field through the method of complex trajectory WKB approximation (CWKB). The CWKB proposed by one of the author's \cite{bis:ijtp} looks upon particle production as due to the motion of a particle in complex space-time plane, thereby requiring tunneling paths both in space and time. Recently \cite{srini:iucaa,srini1:iucaa} there have been some efforts to calculate the reflection and transmission co-efficients for particle prod…
We discuss several aspects of particle production in: (a) time dependent electric field and (b) expanding Friedmann background. In the first part of the paper, we provide an algebraic mapping between the differential equations describing these two phenomena. This mapping allows a direct comparison between (a) and (b) and we highlight several interesting features of both cases using this approach. We determine the form of the (equivalent) electric field corresponding to different Friedmann spacetimes and discover, for example, a time-dependent electric field which, in a specific limit, leads to…
In this work we study the effects of the electromagnetic coupling in natural inflation in a systematic manner using the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism. The corresponding influence functional is evaluated to one-loop level. It can be interpreted as due to a single stochastic force. The equation of motion of the inflaton field is therefore given in the form of a Langevin equation. Lastly, the two-point and the three-point correlation functions of the inflaton field are worked out. They are related to the power spectrum and the nongaussianity of the inflaton field, respectively.
Particle production from vacuum fluctuations during inflation is briefly revisited. The moduli problem occurring with light particles produced at the end of inflation is addressed, namely the fact that some results are in disagreement with nucleosynthesis constrains. A universal solution to this problem is found which leads to reasonable reheating temperatures in all cases. It invokes the assumption that, immediately after inflation, the moduli evolve like non-relativistic matter. The assumption is justified in the context of massive chaotic inflation were, at the end of inflation, the univers…
The particle production in a de Sitter space provides an interesting model to understand the curvature effect on Schwinger pair production by a constant electric field or Schwinger mechanism on the de Sitter radiation. For that purpose, we employ the recently introduced complex analysis method, in which the quantum evolution in the complex time explains the pair production via the geometric transition amplitude and gives the pair-production rate as the contour integral. We compare the result by the contour integral with that of the phase-integral method.
We have tested some simple $Λ$CDM (the same test is also valid for quintessence) inflation models, imposing that they match with the recent observational data provided by the BICEP and Planck's team and leading to a reheating temperature, which is obtained via gravitational particle production after inflation, supporting the nucleosynthesis success.
The notion of inflation (past or present) in standard cosmological models is shown to be a consequence of a sufficiently high second law entropy production from the internal heating of the universal expansion. The longitudinal viscous internal heating of matter requires neither ``inflaton'' fields nor ``quintessence'' fields which in theory may induce a cosmological term into the Einstein equations. The purely thermodynamic principles required to understand inflation within the context of the standard general relativity equations will be discussed in detail.
