Surface tension plays a ubiquitous role in phase transitions including condensation or evaporation of atmospheric liquid droplets. Especially, understanding of interfacial thermodynamics of the critical nucleus of 1 nm scale is important for molecular characterization of the activation energy barrier of nucleation. Here, we investigate surface tension of spherical nanodroplets with both molecular dynamics and density functional theory, and find that surface tension decreases appreciably below 1 nm radius, whose analytic expression is consistently derived from the classic Tolman's equation. In particular, the free energy analysis of nanodroplets shows that the change of surface tension originates dominantly from the configurational energy of interfacial molecules, which is evidenced by the increasingly disrupted hydrogen bond network as the droplet size decreases. Our result can be applied to the interface-related phenomena associated with molecular fluctuations such as biomolecule adsorption at sub-nm scale where the macroscopic thermodynamic quantities are ill-defined.
The sensitive and reliable in-droplet chemical analysis benefits from the enhanced partition of an analyte into the droplets. This work, we will show that chemical reactions in surface nanodroplets can shift the partition of analytes from a highly diluted solution to the droplets. Seven types of organic acids with partition coefficients (LgP) ranging from -0.7 to 1.87 are used as model analytes dissolved in an oil solution that are extracted from the flow into aqueous nanodroplets immobilized on a substrate. The timescale of integrated extraction and reaction in droplets was represented by the…
The compartmentalization of chemical reactions within droplets has advantages in low costs, reduced consumption of reagents and increased throughput. Reactions in small droplets have also been shown to greatly accelerate the rate of many chemical reactions. The accelerated growth rate of nanobubbles from nanodroplet reactions is demonstrated in this work. The gaseous products from the reaction at the nanodroplet surface promoted nucleation of hydrogen nanobubbles within multiple organic liquid nanodroplets. The nanobubbles were confined within the droplets and selectively grew and collapsed at…
Molecular undercoordination shortens and stiffens the H-O bond but lengthens and softens the O:H nonbond simultaneously associated with O 1s energy entrapment and nonbonding electron dual polarization, which dictates behavior of water and ice dominated by undercoordinated molecules, such as droplets, bubbles, defects, skins, etc.
One of the long standing challenges in molecular simulation is the description of interfaces. On the molecular length scale, finite size effects significantly influence the properties of the interface such as its interfacial tension, which can be reliably investigated by molecular dynamics simulation of planar vapor-liquid interfaces. For the Lennard-Jones fluid, finite size effects are examined here by varying the thickness of the liquid slab. It is found that the surface tension and density in the center of the liquid region decreases significantly for thin slabs. The influence of the slab t…
Numerous experiments have demonstrated that many classes of organic reactions exhibit increased reaction rates when performed in heterogeneous water emulsions. Despite enormous practical importance of the observed "on-water" catalytic effect and several mechanistic studies, its microscopic origins remains unclear. In this work, the second generation Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics method is extended to self-consistent charge density-functional based tight-binding in order to study "on-water" catalysis of the Diels-Alder reaction between dimethyl azodicarboxylate and quadricyclane. We find th…
The interactions of a hydrophilic surface with water can significantly influence the characteristics of the liquid water interface. In this manuscript, we explore this influence by studying the molecular structure of liquid water at a disordered surface with tunable surface-water interactions. We combine all-atom molecular dynamics simulations with a mean field model of interfacial hydrogen bonding to analyze the effect of surface-water interactions on the structural and energetic properties of the liquid water interface. We find that the molecular structure of water at a weakly interacting (i…
In this Letter, we present a simple model of aqueous interfacial molecular structure and we use this model to isolate the effects of hydrogen bonding on the dielectric properties of the liquid water-vapor interface. By comparing this model to the results of atomistic simulation we show that the anisotropic distribution of molecular orientations at the interface can be understood by considering the behavior of a single water molecule interacting with the average interfacial density field via an empirical hydrogen bonding potential. We illustrate that the depth dependence of this orientational a…

Fluids adsorbed in 3D wedges are shown to exhibit two types of continuous interfacial unbinding corresponding to critical and tricritical filling respectively. Analytic solution of an effective interfacial model based on the transfer-matrix formalism allows us to obtain the asymptotic probability distribution functions for the interfacial height when criticality and tricriticality are approached. Generalised random walk arguments show that, for systems with short-ranged forces, the critical singularities at these transitions are related to 2D complete and critical wetting with random bond diso…
In order to understand the nature and dynamics of interfacial water molecules on the surface of complex systems, large scale molecular dynamics simulations of an aqueous micelle of cesium perfluorooctanoate surfactant molecules have been carried out. The lifetime and the intermolecular vibrational frequencies of the hydrogen bonds that the water molecules form with the polar headgroups of the surfactants, are calculated. Our earlier classification of the interfacial water molecules, based on structural and energetic considerations, into bound and free type is further validated by their dynamic…
Biocompatible microencapsulation is of widespread interest for the targeted delivery of active species in fields such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and agro-chemistry. Capsules obtained by the self-assembly of polymers at interfaces enable the combination of responsiveness to stimuli, biocompatibility and scaled up production. Here, we present a one-step method to produce in situ membranes at oil-water interfaces, based on the hydrogen bond complexation of polymers between H-bond acceptor and donor in the oil and aqueous phases, respectively. This robust process is realized through different m…
We study the irreversible aggregation of films of patchy spherical colloids with directional and selective interactions. We report a crossover of the interfacial roughening from the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) to the KPZ with quenched disorder (KPZQ) universality class when the difference between the strong and weak bonds is sufficiently large. We calculate the critical exponents and identify the crossover between the two regimes.
In fibrous paper materials, an exposure to a variation in moisture content causes changes in the geometrical and mechanical properties. Such changes are strongly affected by the inter-fibre bonds, which are responsible for the transfer of the hygro-mechanical response from one fibre to its neighbours in the network, resulting in sheet-scale deformation. Most models developed in literature assume perfect bonding between fibres. In the 3D reality, there is some flexibility in the bond region, even for the perfectly bonded fibres, because of the possibility of deformation gradients through the fi…
Adhesion between two bodies is a key parameter in wear processes. At the macroscale, strong adhesive bonds are known to lead to high wear rates, as observed in clean metal-on-metal contact. Reducing the strength of the interfacial adhesion is then desirable, and techniques such as lubrication and surface passivation are employed to this end. Still, little is known about the influence of adhesion on the microscopic processes of wear. In particular, the effects of interfacial adhesion on the wear particle size and on the surface roughness evolution are not clear, and are therefore addressed here…
In this work, we studied the wetting behavior of impinged and stagnant supercooled water nanodroplet at the atomistic scale using molecular dynamics simulations. We show that water droplet represents a retraction behavior from surface groove nanostructure after indicating maximum penetration. There is a threshold for the value of impinging velocity, v*, below which penetration is not observed which depends on size of the surface roughness. This indicates grooves smaller than a certain size can stop water from penetration, considering v~0.5M in practical situations, which is such a useful infor…
In this paper we use molecular dynamics (MD) to answer a classical question: how does the surface tension on a liquid/gas interface appear? After defining surface tension from the first principles and performing several consistency checks, we perform a dynamic experiment with a single simple liquid nanodroplet. At time zero, we remove all molecules of the interfacial layer, creating a fresh bare interface with the bulk arrangement of molecules. After that the system evolves towards equilibrium, and the expected surface tension is re-established. We found that the system relaxation consists of …
We report vibrational sum frequency generation spectra from supported lipid bilayers in which the OH and the CH stretching signals are probed at different salt concentrations. Atomistic simulations show a negligible impact of salt on the OH stretching spectra, indicating the observed SFG intensity changes are due to chi(3) and potential dependent contributions. These are further analyzed in the contact of exact-zero reference states. Further experiments and simulations identify specific hydrogen bonding interactions between interfacial water molecules at the PC head group of the zwitterionic D…
The mechanism of cold- and pressure-denaturation are matter of debate. Some models propose that when denaturation occurs more hydrogen bonds between the molecules of hydration water are formed. Other models identify the cause in the density fluctuations of surface water, or the destabilization of hydrophobic contacts because of the displacement of water molecules inside the protein, as proposed for high pressures. However, it is clear that water plays a fundamental role in the process. Here, we review some models that have been proposed to give insight into this problem. Next we describe a coa…
