We consider the extrinsic geometry of surfaces in simply isotropic space, a three-dimensional space equipped with a rank 2 metric of index zero. Since the metric is degenerate, a surface normal cannot be unequivocally defined based on metric properties only. To understand the contrast between distinct choices of an isotropic Gauss map, here we study surfaces with a Gauss map whose coordinates are eigenfunctions of the surface Laplace-Beltrami operator. We take into account two choices, the so-called minimal and parabolic normals, and show that when applied to simply isotropic invariant surfaces the condition that the coordinates of the corresponding Gauss map are eigenfunctions leads to planes, certain cylinders, or surfaces with constant isotropic mean curvature. Finally, we also investigate (non-necessarily invariant) surfaces with harmonic Gauss map and show this characterizes constant mean curvature surfaces.
This paper investigates the hanging chain problem in the simply isotropic plane as well as its 2-dimensional analog in the simply isotropic space. The simply isotropic plane and space are two- and three-dimensional geometries equipped with a degenerate metric whose kernel has dimension 1. Although the metric is degenerate, the hanging chain and hanging surface problems are well-posed if we employ the relative arc length and relative area to measure the weight. Here, the concepts of relative arc length and relative area emerge by seeing the simply isotropic geometry as a relative geometry. In a…
We study invariant surfaces generated by one-parameter subgroups of simply and pseudo isotropic rigid motions. Basically, the simply and pseudo isotropic geometries are the study of a three-dimensional space equipped with a rank 2 metric of index zero and one, respectively. We show that the one-parameter subgroups of isotropic rigid motions lead to seven types of invariant surfaces, which then generalizes the study of revolution and helicoidal surfaces in Euclidean and Lorentzian spaces to the context of singular metrics. After computing the two fundamental forms of these surfaces and their Ga…
It is known that minimal surfaces in Euclidean space can be represented in terms of holomorphic functions. For example, we have the well-known Weierstrass representation, where part of the holomorphic data is chosen to be the stereographic projection of the normal of the corresponding surface, and also the Björling representation, where it is prescribed a curve on the surface and the unit normal on this curve. In this work, we are interested in the holomorphic representation of minimal surfaces in simply isotropic space, a three-dimensional space equipped with a rank 2 metric of index zero. Si…
In this work, we are interested in the differential geometry of surfaces in simply isotropic $\mathbb{I}^3$ and pseudo-isotropic $\mathbb{I}_{\mathrm{p}}^3$ spaces, which consists of the study of $\mathbb{R}^3$ equipped with a degenerate metric such as $\mathrm{d}s^2=\mathrm{d}x^2\pm\mathrm{d}y^2$. The investigation is based on previous results in the simply isotropic space [B. Pavković, Glas. Mat. Ser. III $\mathbf{15}$, 149 (1980); Rad JAZU $\mathbf{450}$, 129 (1990)], which point to the possibility of introducing an isotropic Gauss map taking values on a unit sphere of parabolic type and of…
We give a positive answer to the Chavel's conjecture [J. Diff. Geom. 4 (1970), 13-20]: a simply connected rank one normal homogeneous space is symmetric if any pair of conjugate points are isotropic. It implies that all simply connected rank one normal homogeneous space with the property that the isotropy action is variational complete is a rank one symmetric space.
Zero mean curvature surfaces in the simply isotropic 3-space $\mathbb{I}^3$ naturally appear as intermediate geometry between geometry of minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{E}^3$ and that of maximal surfaces in $\mathbb{L}^3$. In this paper, we investigate reflection principles for zero mean curvature surfaces in $\mathbb{I}^3$ as with the above surfaces in $\mathbb{E}^3$ and $\mathbb{L}^3$. In particular, we show a reflection principle for isotropic line segments on such zero mean curvature surfaces in $\mathbb{I}^3$, along which the induced metrics become singular.
In this work, we are interested in the differential geometry of curves in the simply isotropic and pseudo-isotropic 3-spaces, which are examples of Cayley-Klein geometries whose absolute figure is given by a plane at infinity and a degenerate quadric. Motivated by the success of rotation minimizing (RM) frames in Euclidean and Lorentzian geometries, here we show how to build RM frames in isotropic geometries and apply them in the study of isotropic spherical curves. Indeed, through a convenient manipulation of osculating spheres described in terms of RM frames, we show that it is possible to c…
It was shown by Ramanathan \cite{R} that any compact oriented non-simply-connected minimal surface in the three-dimensional round sphere admits at most a finite set of pairwise noncongruent minimal isometric immersions. Here we show that this result extends to isotropic surfaces in spheres of arbitrary dimension. The case of non-compact isotropic surfaces in space forms is also addressed.
In this paper we study the topology of compact manifolds of positive isotropic curvature (PIC). There are many examples of non-simply connected compact manifolds with positive isotropic curvature. We prove that the fundamental group of a compact Riemannian manifold with PIC, of dimension greater than or equal to 5, does not contain a subgroup isomorphic to the fundamental group of a compact Riemann surface. The proof uses stable minimal surface theory.
We study the Bonnet problem for surfaces in 4-dimensional space forms, where two isometric surfaces have the same mean curvature if there exists a parallel vector bundle isometry between their normal bundles that preserves the mean curvature vector fields. We deal with the moduli space of congruence classes of isometric surfaces with the same mean curvature, and with properties inherited on a surface by its structure. The study of this problem led us to a new conformally invariant property, called isotropic isothermicity, that coincides with the usual concept of isothermicity for surfaces lyin…
In this article, we give the integrability conditions for the existence of an isometric immersion from an orientable simply connected surface having prescribed Gauss map and positive extrinsic curvature into some unimodular Lie groups. In particular, we discuss the case when the Lie group is the euclidean unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$ and establish a correspondence between simply connected surfaces having extrinsic curvature $K$, $K$ different from 0 and -1, immersed in $\mathbb{S}^3$ with simply connected surfaces having non-vanishing extrinsic curvature immersed in the euclidean space $\mathbb{…
We classify translation surfaces in isotropic geometry with arbitrary constant isotropic Gaussian and mean curvature under the condition that at least one of translating curves lies in a plane.
In this paper, we study factorable surfaces in a 3-dimensional isotropic space. We classify such surfaces with constant isotropic Gaussian (K) and mean curvature (H). We provide a non-existence result related with the surfaces satisfying H/K=const. Several examples are also illustrated.
We classify simply-connected, complete Willmore surfaces with vanishing Gaussian curvature. We also study the Willmore cones and give a classification. As an application, we give a Bernstein-type theorem.
In this paper, we study the rotational surfaces in the isotropic 3-space I^3. satisfying Weingarten conditions in terms of the relative curvature K (analogue of the Gaussian curvature) and the isotropic mean curvature H. In particular, we classify such surfaces of linear Weingarten type in I^3.
In this study, we deal with the local structure of curves and surfaces immersed in a pseudo-isotropic space I_{p}^{3} that is a particular Cayley-Klein space. We provide the formulas of curvature, torsion and Frenet trihedron in order for spacelike and timelike curves. The causal character of all admissible surfaces in I_{p}^{3} has to be timelike or lightlike up to its absolute. We introduce the formulas of Gaussian and mean curvature for timelike surfaces in I_{p}^{3}. As applications, we describe the surfaces of revolution which are the orbits of a plane curve under a hyperbolic rotation wi…
The isotropic 3-space I^3 which is one of the Cayley--Klein spaces is obtained from the Euclidean space by substituting the usual Euclidean distance with the isotropic distance. In the present paper, we give several classifications on the surfaces in I^3 with the constant relative curvature (analogue of the Gaussian curvature) and the constant isotropic mean curvature. In particular, we classify the helicoidal surfaces in I^3 with constant curvature and analyze some special curves on these.
In this paper, we extend the notion of affine translation surfaces introduced by Liu and Yu (Proc. Japan Acad. Ser. A Math. Sci. 89, 111--113, 2013) in a Euclidean space R^{3} to higher dimensional ambient spaces. We provide that an affine translation hypersurface of constant Gauss-Kronocker curvature K_{0} in R^{n+1} is a cylinder, i.e. K_{0}=0. As further applications we describe such hypersurfaces in the isotropic spaces satisfying certain conditions on the isotropic curvatures and the Laplacian.
There exist four non-equivalent types of the translation hypersurfaces in the 4-dimensional isotropic space $\mathbb{I}^{4}$ generated by translating the curves lying in perpendicular $k-$planes $\left(k=2,3\right)$, due to its absolute figure. In arbitrary dimensional case; constant Gauss-Kronecker and mean curvature translation hypersurfaces of type 1, i.e. the hypersurfaces whose the translating curves lie in perpendicular isotropic $2- $planes, were investigated by the same authors in \cite{AO}. The present study concerns such hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{I}^{4}$ of other three types.
In this paper, we study the problem of finding the affine factorable surfaces in a 3-dimensional isotropic space with prescribed Gaussian (K) and mean (H) curvature. Because the absolute figure two different types of these surfaces appear by permutation of coordinates. We firstly classify the affine factorable surfaces of type 1 with K,H constants. Afterwards, we provide the affine factorable surfaces of type 2 with K=const. and H=0. In addition, in a particular case, the affine factorable surfaces of type 2 with H=const. were obtained.
In this paper, we show the existence of real-analytic stationary Navier-Stokes flows with isotropic streamlines in all latitudes in some simply-connected flow region on a rotating round sphere. We also exclude the possibility of having a Poiseuille's flow profile to be one of these stationary Navier-Stokes flows with isotropic streamlines. When the sphere is replaced by a 2-dimensional hyperbolic space, we also give the analog existence result for stationary parallel laminar Navier-Stokes flows along a circular-arc boundary portion of some compact obstacle in the 2-D hyperbolic space. The exis…
We classify simply-connected homogeneous ($D+1$)-dimensional spacetimes for kinematical and aristotelian Lie groups with $D$-dimensional space isotropy for all $D\geq 0$. Besides well-known spacetimes like Minkowski and (anti) de Sitter we find several new classes of geometries, some of which exist only for $D=1,2$. These geometries share the same amount of symmetry (spatial rotations, boosts and spatio-temporal translations) as the maximally symmetric spacetimes, but unlike them they do not necessarily admit an invariant metric. We determine the possible limits between the spacetimes and inte…
Simply-connected homogeneous spacetimes for kinematical and aristotelian Lie algebras (with space isotropy) have recently been classified in all dimensions. In this paper, we continue the study of these "maximally symmetric" spacetimes by investigating their local geometry. For each such spacetime and relative to exponential coordinates, we calculate the (infinitesimal) action of the kinematical symmetries, paying particular attention to the action of the boosts, showing in almost all cases that they act with generic non-compact orbits. We also calculate the soldering form, the associated viel…
