Face reading is the most intuitive aspect of emotion recognition. Unfortunately, digital analysis of facial expression requires digitally recording personal faces. As emotional analysis is particularly required in a more poised scenario, capturing faces becomes a gross violation of privacy. In this paper, we use the concept of compressive analysis to conceptualise a system which compressively acquires faces in order to ascertain unusable reconstruction, while allowing for acceptable (and adjustable) accuracy in inference.
The datasets of face recognition contain an enormous number of identities and instances. However, conventional methods have difficulty in reflecting the entire distribution of the datasets because a mini-batch of small size contains only a small portion of all identities. To overcome this difficulty, we propose a novel method called BroadFace, which is a learning process to consider a massive set of identities, comprehensively. In BroadFace, a linear classifier learns optimal decision boundaries among identities from a large number of embedding vectors accumulated over past iterations. By refe…

Machine learning has been used to recognize emotions in faces, typically by looking for 8 different emotional states (neutral, happy, sad, surprise, fear, disgust, anger and contempt). We consider two approaches: feature recognition based on facial landmarks and deep learning on all pixels; each produced 58% overall accuracy. However, they produced different results on different images and thus we propose a new meta-classifier combining these approaches. It produces far better results with 77% accuracy
Human activity detection from digital videos presents many challenges to the computer vision and image processing communities. Recently, many methods have been developed to detect human activities with varying degree of success. Yet, the general human activity detection problem remains very challenging, especially when the methods need to work 'in the wild' (e.g., without having precise control over the imaging geometry). The thesis explores phase-based solutions for (i) detecting faces, (ii) back of the heads, (iii) joint detection of faces and back of the heads, and (iv) whether the head is …

Recently, there has been numerous breakthroughs in face hallucination tasks. However, the task remains rather challenging in videos in comparison to the images due to inherent consistency issues. The presence of extra temporal dimension in video face hallucination makes it non-trivial to learn the facial motion through out the sequence. In order to learn these fine spatio-temporal motion details, we propose a novel cross-modal audio-visual Video Face Hallucination Generative Adversarial Network (VFH-GAN). The architecture exploits the semantic correlation of between the movement of the facial …

Recent advances in deep learning have heightened interest among researchers in the field of visual speech recognition (VSR). Currently, most existing methods equate VSR with automatic lip reading, which attempts to recognise speech by analysing lip motion. However, human experience and psychological studies suggest that we do not always fix our gaze at each other's lips during a face-to-face conversation, but rather scan the whole face repetitively. This inspires us to revisit a fundamental yet somehow overlooked problem: can VSR models benefit from reading extraoral facial regions, i.e. beyon…
Lip reading is used to understand or interpret speech without hearing it, a technique especially mastered by people with hearing difficulties. The ability to lip read enables a person with a hearing impairment to communicate with others and to engage in social activities, which otherwise would be difficult. Recent advances in the fields of computer vision, pattern recognition, and signal processing has led to a growing interest in automating this challenging task of lip reading. Indeed, automating the human ability to lip read, a process referred to as visual speech recognition, could open the…
Recognizing human affect and emotions is a problem that has a wide range of applications within both academia and industry. Affect and emotion recognition within computer vision primarily relies on images of faces. With the prevalence of portable devices (e.g. smart phones and/or smart glasses),acquiring user facial images requires focus, time, and precision. While existing systems work great for full frontal faces, they tend to not work so well with partial faces like those of the operator of the device when under use. Due to this, we propose a methodology in which we can accurately infer the…

Facial emotion recognition is an essential and important aspect of the field of human-machine interaction. Past research on facial emotion recognition focuses on the laboratory environment. However, it faces many challenges in real-world conditions, i.e., illumination changes, large pose variations and partial or full occlusions. Those challenges lead to different face areas with different degrees of sharpness and completeness. Inspired by this fact, we focus on the authenticity of predictions generated by different <emotion, region> pairs. For example, if only the mouth areas are available an…
There is little prior work on quantifying the relationships between facial expressions and emotionality in American Sign Language. In this final report, we provide two methods for studying these relationships through probability and prediction. Using a large corpus of natural signing manually annotated with facial features paired with lexical emotion datasets, we find that there exist many relationships between emotionality and the face, and that a simple classifier can predict what someone is saying in terms of broad emotional categories only by looking at the face.

Several works have developed end-to-end pipelines for generating lip-synced talking faces with various real-world applications, such as teaching and language translation in videos. However, these prior works fail to create realistic-looking videos since they focus little on people's expressions and emotions. Moreover, these methods' effectiveness largely depends on the faces in the training dataset, which means they may not perform well on unseen faces. To mitigate this, we build a talking face generation framework conditioned on a categorical emotion to generate videos with appropriate expres…

In this paper, we present a sparsity-aware deep network for automatic 4D facial expression recognition (FER). Given 4D data, we first propose a novel augmentation method to combat the data limitation problem for deep learning. This is achieved by projecting the input data into RGB and depth map images and then iteratively performing randomized channel concatenation. Encoded in the given 3D landmarks, we also introduce an effective way to capture the facial muscle movements from three orthogonal plans (TOP), the TOP-landmarks over multi-views. Importantly, we then present a sparsity-aware deep …

Talking face generation, also known as speech-to-lip generation, reconstructs facial motions concerning lips given coherent speech input. The previous studies revealed the importance of lip-speech synchronization and visual quality. Despite much progress, they hardly focus on the content of lip movements i.e., the visual intelligibility of the spoken words, which is an important aspect of generation quality. To address the problem, we propose using a lip-reading expert to improve the intelligibility of the generated lip regions by penalizing the incorrect generation results. Moreover, to compe…

3D face reconstruction algorithms from images and videos are applied to many fields, from plastic surgery to the entertainment sector, thanks to their advantageous features. However, when looking at forensic applications, 3D face reconstruction must observe strict requirements that still make unclear its possible role in bringing evidence to a lawsuit. Shedding some light on this matter is the goal of the present survey, where we start by clarifying the relation between forensic applications and biometrics. To our knowledge, no previous work adopted this relation to make the point on the state…

Face anti-spoofing (FAS) plays a critical role in securing face recognition systems from different presentation attacks. Previous works leverage auxiliary pixel-level supervision and domain generalization approaches to address unseen spoof types. However, the local characteristics of image captures, i.e., capturing devices and presenting materials, are ignored in existing works and we argue that such information is required for networks to discriminate between live and spoof images. In this work, we propose PatchNet which reformulates face anti-spoofing as a fine-grained patch-type recognition…

Face recognition (FR) systems have demonstrated outstanding verification performance, suggesting suitability for real-world applications ranging from photo tagging in social media to automated border control (ABC). In an advanced FR system with deep learning-based architecture, however, promoting the recognition efficiency alone is not sufficient, and the system should also withstand potential kinds of attacks designed to target its proficiency. Recent studies show that (deep) FR systems exhibit an intriguing vulnerability to imperceptible or perceptible but natural-looking adversarial input i…
Face recognition approaches often rely on equal image resolution for verifying faces on two images. However, in practical applications, those image resolutions are usually not in the same range due to different image capture mechanisms or sources. In this work, we first analyze the impact of image resolutions on face verification performance with a state-of-the-art face recognition model. For images synthetically reduced to $5\,\times\,5$ px resolution, the verification performance drops from $99.23\%$ increasingly down to almost $55\%$. Especially for cross-resolution image pairs (one high- a…
