Vehicle re-identification aims to obtain the same vehicles from vehicle images. This is challenging but essential for analyzing and predicting traffic flow in the city. Although deep learning methods have achieved enormous progress for this task, their large data requirement is a critical shortcoming. Therefore, we propose a synthetic-to-real domain adaptation network (StRDAN) framework, which can be trained with inexpensive large-scale synthetic and real data to improve performance. The StRDAN training method combines domain adaptation and semi-supervised learning methods and their associated losses. StRDAN offers significant improvement over the baseline model, which can only be trained using real data, for VeRi and CityFlow-ReID datasets, achieving 3.1% and 12.9% improved mean average precision, respectively.

Monitoring vehicle flows in cities is crucial to improve the urban environment and quality of life of citizens. Images are the best sensing modality to perceive and assess the flow of vehicles in large areas. Current technologies for vehicle counting in images hinge on large quantities of annotated data, preventing their scalability to city-scale as new cameras are added to the system. This is a recurrent problem when dealing with physical systems and a key research area in Machine Learning and AI. We propose and discuss a new methodology to design image-based vehicle density estimators with f…

Part segmentations provide a rich and detailed part-level description of objects. However, their annotation requires an enormous amount of work, which makes it difficult to apply standard deep learning methods. In this paper, we propose the idea of learning part segmentation through unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) from synthetic data. We first introduce UDA-Part, a comprehensive part segmentation dataset for vehicles that can serve as an adequate benchmark for UDA (https://qliu24.github.io/udapart). In UDA-Part, we label parts on 3D CAD models which enables us to generate a large set of a…
Annotating objects with 3D bounding boxes in LiDAR pointclouds is a costly human driven process in an autonomous driving perception system. In this paper, we present a method to semi-automatically annotate real-world pointclouds collected by deployment vehicles using simulated data. We train a 3D object detector model on labeled simulated data from CARLA jointly with real world pointclouds from our target vehicle. The supervised object detection loss is augmented with a CORAL loss term to reduce the distance between labeled simulated and unlabeled real pointcloud feature representations. The g…
In this work we introduce a new problem named Intelligent Speed Adaptation from Appearance (ISA$^2$). Technically, the goal of an ISA$^2$ model is to predict for a given image of a driving scenario the proper speed of the vehicle. Note this problem is different from predicting the actual speed of the vehicle. It defines a novel regression problem where the appearance information has to be directly mapped to get a prediction for the speed at which the vehicle should go, taking into account the traffic situation. First, we release a novel dataset for the new problem, where multiple driving video…

Self-driving cars must detect other vehicles and pedestrians in 3D to plan safe routes and avoid collisions. State-of-the-art 3D object detectors, based on deep learning, have shown promising accuracy but are prone to over-fit to domain idiosyncrasies, making them fail in new environments -- a serious problem if autonomous vehicles are meant to operate freely. In this paper, we propose a novel learning approach that drastically reduces this gap by fine-tuning the detector on pseudo-labels in the target domain, which our method generates while the vehicle is parked, based on replays of previous…

Scalable systems for automated driving have to reliably cope with an open-world setting. This means, the perception systems are exposed to drastic domain shifts, like changes in weather conditions, time-dependent aspects, or geographic regions. Covering all domains with annotated data is impossible because of the endless variations of domains and the time-consuming and expensive annotation process. Furthermore, fast development cycles of the system additionally introduce hardware changes, such as sensor types and vehicle setups, and the required knowledge transfer from simulation. To enable sc…

The human's brain perceives the environment by utilizing different sensory channels and develop a view-invariant representation model. Keeping in this context, different exteroceptive sensors are deployed on the autonomous vehicle for perceiving the environment. The most common exteroceptive sensors are camera, Lidar and radar for autonomous vehicle's perception. Despite being these sen…

Scene understanding is a pivotal task for autonomous vehicles to safely navigate in the environment. Recent advances in deep learning enable accurate semantic reconstruction of the surroundings from LiDAR data. However, these models encounter a large domain gap while deploying them on vehicles equipped with different LiDAR setups which drastically decreases their performance. Fine-tuning the model for every new setup is infeasible due to the expensive and cumbersome process of recording and manually labeling new data. Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) techniques are thus essential to fill t…

Adapting to a continuously evolving environment is a safety-critical challenge inevitably faced by all autonomous driving systems. Existing image and video driving datasets, however, fall short of capturing the mutable nature of the real world. In this paper, we introduce the largest multi-task synthetic dataset for autonomous driving, SHIFT. It presents discrete and continuous shifts in cloudiness, rain and fog intensity, time of day, and vehicle and pedestrian density. Featuring a comprehensive sensor suite and annotations for several mainstream perception tasks, SHIFT allows investigating t…

This paper uses a graphic engine to simulate a large amount of training data with free annotations. Between synthetic and real data, there is a two-level domain gap, i.e., content level and appearance level. While the latter has been widely studied, we focus on reducing the content gap in attributes like illumination and viewpoint. To reduce the problem complexity, we choose a smaller and more controllable application, vehicle re-identification (re-ID). We introduce a large-scale synthetic dataset VehicleX. Created in Unity, it contains 1,362 vehicles of various 3D models with fully editable a…

Three-dimensional (3D) object recognition is crucial for intelligent autonomous agents such as autonomous vehicles and robots alike to operate effectively in unstructured environments. Most state-of-art approaches rely on relatively dense point clouds and performance drops significantly for sparse point clouds. Unsupervised domain adaption allows to minimise the discrepancy between dense and sparse point clouds with minimal unlabelled sparse point clouds, thereby saving additional sparse data collection, annotation and retraining costs. In this work, we propose a novel method for point cloud b…

Vehicle re-identification (reID) aims at identifying vehicles across different non-overlapping cameras views. The existing methods heavily relied on well-labeled datasets for ideal performance, which inevitably causes fateful drop due to the severe domain bias between the training domain and the real-world scenes; worse still, these approaches required full annotations, which is labor-consuming. To tackle these challenges, we propose a novel progressive adaptation learning method for vehicle reID, named PAL, which infers from the abundant data without annotations. The proposed method significantly improved AP score by over 5%, which shows effectivity of our method for object det…

Our method initially extracts features from vehicle images and stores them in a dictionary. Thereafter, based on the dictionary, t…
The performance of object detection methods based on LiDAR information is heavily impacted by the availability of training data, usually limited to certain laser devices. As a result, the use of synthetic data is becoming popular when training neural network models, as both sensor specifications and driving scenarios can be generated ad-hoc. However, bridging the gap between virtual and real environments is still an open challenge, as current simulators cannot completely mimic real LiDAR operation. To tackle this issue, domain adaptation strategies are usually applied, obtaining remarkable res…
