We report on a study of a one-dimensional linear photonic lattice hosting, simultaneously, fundamental and dipolar modes at every site. We show how, thanks to the interaction between the different orbital modes, this minimal model exhibits rich transport and topological properties. By varying the detuning coefficient we find a regime where bands become flatter (with reduced transport) and, a second regime, where both bands connect on at a gap-closing transition (with enhanced transport). We detect an asymmetric transport due to the asymmetric inter-mode coupling and a linear energy exchange mechanism between modes. Further analysis show that the bands have a topological transition with a non-trivial Zak phase which leads to the appeareance of edge states in a finite system. Finally, for zero detuning, we found a symmetric condition for coupling constants, where the linear spectrum becomes completely flat, with states fully localized in space occupying only two lattice sites.
From fundamental discovery to practical application, advances in the optical and quantum sciences rely upon precise control of light-matter interactions. Systems of coupled optical cavities are ubiquitous in these efforts, yet design and active modification of the hybridized mode properties remains challenging. In this Letter, we demonstrate the ability to thermally control the degree of hybridization in a heterogeneous photonic molecule composed of a ring resonator strongly coupled to a nanobeam photonic crystal cavity. Combining theory and experiment, we show that the composition of the resu…
We report that nacre (also known as mother-of-pearl), a wondrous nanocomposite found in nature, is a rich photonic nanomaterial allowing the experimental realization of collective excitation and light amplification via coupled states. Localized modes in three-dimensional complex media are typically isolated in frequency and space. However, multiple local resonances can be hybridized in multilayered nanostructures of nacre so that the effective cavity size for efficient disordered resonators is scaled up. Localized modes in hybridized states in nacre are overlapped in frequency with similar sha…
In the presence of crystalline symmetries, second-order topological insulators can be featured by the polarization which is believed identical to the Wannier center. In this Letter, we show that second-order topological insulators are present in the full process of topological phase transition between a pair of degenerate photonic bands resulting from the non-symmorphic glide symmetry in all-dielectric photonic crystals. Due to the coupling (hybridization) of the Wannier functions, the center of the maximally localized Wannier function always locates at the origin, not equal to the addition of…

We present a theoretical study of the effect of an external dc magnetic field in the near-field radiative heat transfer between two one-dimensional magneto-photonic crystals with unit cells comprising a magneto-optical layer made of n-doped InSb and a dielectric layer. We find that in absence of an external field, and depending on the gap size, the radiative heat transfer between these multilayer structures can be larger or smaller than that of the case of two InSb infinite plates. On the other hand, when an external magnetic field is applied, the near-field radiative heat transfer is reduced …
We investigate the physics of photonic band structures of the moiré patterns that emerged when overlapping two uni-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal slabs with mismatched periods. The band structure of our system is a result of the interplay between intra-layer and inter-layer coupling mechanisms, which can be fine-tuned via the distance separating the two layers. We derive an effective Hamiltonian that captures the essential physics of the system and reproduces all numerical simulations of electromagnetic solutions with high accuracy. Most interestingly, \textit{magic distances} corresponding…
We establish experimentally a photonic super-honeycomb lattice (sHCL) by use of a cw-laser writing technique, and thereby demonstrate two distinct flatband line states that manifest as noncontractible-loop-states in an infinite flatband lattice. These localized states (straight and zigzag lines) observed in the sHCL with tailored boundaries cannot be obtained by superposition of conventional compact localized states because they represent a new topological entity in flatband systems. In fact, the zigzag-line states, unique to the sHCL, are in contradistinction with those previously observed in…
The extraordinary electronic properties of Dirac materials, the two-dimensional partners of Weyl semimetals, arise from the linear crossings in their band structure. When the dispersion around the Dirac points is tilted, the emergence of intricate transport phenomena has been predicted, such as modified Klein tunnelling, intrinsic anomalous Hall effects and ferrimagnetism. However, Dirac materials are rare, particularly with tilted Dirac cones. Recently, artificial materials whose building blocks present orbital degrees of freedom have appeared as promising candidates for the engineering of ex…

We report on singular and nonsingular flat bands in a Sierpinski fractal-like photonic lattice. We demonstrate that the the lowest two bands, being isolated and degenerate due to geometrical frustration, are nonsingular and thus can be spanned by a complete set of compact localized states. We experimentally prove these states to propagate diffractionless in the photonic lattice. Our results reveal the interplay between geometrical frustration, degenerate flat bands and compact localized states in a single photonic lattice, and pave the way to photonic spin liquid ground states.
We present the first experimental demonstration of a new type of bound states in the continuum, namely, compacton-like linear states in flat bands lattices. To this end, photonic Lieb lattices are employed, which exhibit three tight-binding bands, with one being perfectly flat. Our results could be of great importance for fundamental physics as well as for various applications concerning imaging and data transmission.
Flatband photonic lattices, i.e. arrays of waveguides or resonators displaying a flat Bloch band, offer new routes for light trapping and distortion-free imaging. Here it is shown that flatland lattices can show stable and cooperative laser emission when optical gain is supplied to the system, despite the large degree of degeneracy of flatland supermodes. By considering a quasi one-dimensional rhombic lattice of coupled semiconductor microrings, selective pumping of the outer sublattices can induce cooperative lasing in a supermode of the flat band
In this paper, a non-Hermitian two-dimensional photonic crystal flat lens is proposed. The negative refraction of the second band of photonic crystal is utilized to realize super-resolution imaging of the point source. Based on the principles of non-Hermitian systems, a negative imaginary part is introduced into the imaging frequency, in which case the imaging intensity and resolution are improved. The results indicate that the non-Hermitian system provides a new method to improve the imaging performance of the photonic crystal lens.
Understanding the wave transport and localisation is a major goal in the study of lattices of different nature. In general, inhibiting the energy transport on a perfectly periodic and disorder-free system is challenging, however, some specific lattice geometries allow localisation due to the presence of dispersionless (flat) bands in the energy spectrum. Here, we report on the experimental realisation of a quasi-one-dimensional photonic graphene ribbon supporting four flat-bands. We study the dynamics of fundamental and dipolar modes, which are analogous to the s and p orbitals, respectively. …
We investigate the optical properties of a photonic crystal composed of a quasi-one-dimensional flat-band lattice array through finite-difference time-domain simulations. The photonic bands contain flat bands (FBs) at specific frequencies, which correspond to compact localized states as a consequence of destructive interference. The FBs are shown to be nondispersive along the $Γ\rightarrow X$ line, but dispersive along the $Γ\rightarrow Y$ line. The FB localization of light in a single direction only results in a self-collimation of light propagation throughout the photonic crystal at the FB f…
The existence of flat bands is generally thought to be physically possible only for dimensions larger than one. However, by exciting a system with different orthogonal states this condition can be reformulated. In this work, we demonstrate that a one-dimensional binary lattice supports always a trivial flat band, which is formed by isolated single-site vertical dipolar states. These flat band modes correspond to the highest localized modes for any discrete system, without the need of any aditional mechanism like, e.g., disorder or nonlinearity. By fulfilling a specific relation between lattice…
Photonic lattices have emerged as a promising approach to localize light in space, for example, through topologically protected edge states and Aharonov-Bohm caging. They are of particular importance in the study of flat band systems via the associated nondiffracting compact localized states. However, such states typically appear static, thus not allowing adaptive or evolutionary features of light localization. Here we report on the first experimental realization of an oscillating compact localized state (OCLS). We observe an oscillatory intensity beating during propagation in a two-dimensiona…
Flatband systems typically host "compact localized states"(CLS) due to destructive interference and macroscopic degeneracy of Bloch wave functions associated with a dispersionless energy band. Using a photonic Lieb lattice(LL), we show that conventional localized flatband states are inherently incomplete, with the missing modes manifested as extended line states which form non-contractible loops winding around the entire lattice. Experimentally, we develop a continuous-wave laser writing technique to establish a finite-sized photonic LL with specially-tailored boundaries, thereby directly obse…
Flat band systems are usually associated to compact localized states (CLSs) resulting from the macroscopic degeneracy of eigenstates at the flat band energy. In case of singular flat bands, these conventional localized flat band states have been found to be incomplete leading to the existence of so-called noncontractible loop states (NLSs) with nontrivial real space topology. Here, we experimentally and analytically demonstrate that a 2D photonic borophene lattice can host NLSs without a CLS counterpart because of a band that is flat only along high-symmetry lines and dispersive along others. …
We demonstrate that a flat-band state in a quasi-one-dimensional rhombic lattice is robust in the presence of external drivings along the lattice axis. The lattice was formed by periodic arrays of evanescently coupled optical waveguides, and the external drivings were realized by modulating the paths of the waveguides. We excited a superposition of flat-band eigenmodes at the input and observed that this state does not diffract in the presence of static as well as high-frequency sinusoidal drivings. This robust localization is due to destructive interference of the analogous wavefunction and i…
In recent years, novel two-dimensional materials such as graphene, bismuthene and transition-metal dichalcogenides have attracted considerable interest due to their unique physical properties. A range of physical effects can be transferred to the realms of photonics by creating artificial photonic lattices emulating these two-dimensional materials. Here, exciton-polaritons in semiconductor microcavities offer an exciting opportunity to study a part-light, part-matter quantum fluid of light in a complex lattice potential. In this paper, we study exciton-polaritons in a two-dimensional Lieb latt…
We experimentally demonstrate the photonic realization of a dispersionless flat-band in a quasi-one-dimensional photonic lattice fabricated by ultrafast laser inscription. In the nearest neighbor tight binding approximation, the lattice supports two dispersive and a non-dispersive (flat) band. We experimentally excite superpositions of flat-band eigen modes at the input of the photonic lattice and show the diffractionless propagation of the input states due to their infinite effective mass. In the future, the use of photonic rhombic lattices, together with the successful implementation of a sy…
We show experimentally how a non-diffracting state can be excited in a photonic Lieb lattice. This lattice supports three energy bands, including a perfectly flat middle band, which corresponds to an infinite effective mass with zero dispersion. We show that a suitable optical input state can be prepared so as to only excite the flat band. We analyse, both experimentally and theoretically, the evolution of such photonic flat-band states, and show their remarkable robustness, even in the presence of disorder.
We experimentally study a Stub photonic lattice and excite their localized linear states originated from an isolated Flat Band at the center of the linear spectrum. By exciting these modes in different regions of the lattice, we observe that they do not diffract across the system and remain well trapped after propagating along the crystal. By using their wave nature, we are able to combine -- in phase and out of phase -- two neighbor states into a coherent superposition. These observations allow us to propose a novel setup for performing three different all-optical logical operations such as O…
We analyze the transport of light in the bulk and at the edge of photonic Lieb lattices, whose unique feature is the existence of a flat band representing stationary states in the middle of the band structure that can form localized bulk states. We find that transport in bulk Lieb lattices is significantly affected by the particular excitation site within the unit cell, due to overlap with the flat band states. Additionally, we demonstrate the existence of new edge states in anisotropic Lieb lattices. These states arise due to a virtual defect at the lattice edges and are not described by the …
Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in circularly symmetric optical microresonators exhibit integer quantized angular momentum numbers due to the boundary condition imposed by the geometry. Here, we show that incorporating a photonic crystal pattern in an integrated microring can result in WGMs with fractional optical angular momentum. By choosing the photonic crystal periodicity to open a photonic bandgap with a band-edge momentum lying between that of two WGMs of the unperturbed ring, we observe hybridized WGMs with half-integer quantized angular momentum numbers ($m \in \mathbb{Z}$ + 1/2). More…
We report two new classes of face-centered photonic square lattices with flat bands which we call the Lieb-I and the Lieb-II lattices. There are 5 and 7 sites in the corresponding unit cells of the simplest Lieb-I and Lieb-II lattices, respectively. The number of flat bands $m$ in the new Lieb lattices is related to the number of sites $N$ in the unit cell by $m=(N-1)/2$. Physical properties of the lattices with even and odd number of flat bands are different. We also consider localization of light in such Lieb lattices. If the input beam excites the flat-band mode, it will not diffract during…
Noncontractible loop states (NLSs) are recently realized topological entity in flatband lattices, arising typically from band touching at a point where a flat band intersects one or more dispersive bands. There exists also band touching across a plane, where one flat band overlaps another all over the Brillouin zone without crossing a dispersive band. Such isolated plane-touching flat bands remain largely unexplored. For example, what are the topological features associated with such flatband degeneracy? Here, we demonstrate for the first time to our knowledge nontrivial NLSs and robust bounda…
Twisted two-dimensional bi-layers offer exquisite control on the electronic bandstructure through the interlayer rotation and coupling, enabling magic-angle flat-band superconductivity and moiré excitons. Here, we demonstrate how analogous principles, combined with large anisotropy, enable extreme control and manipulation of the photonic dispersion of phonon polaritons (PhPs) in van der Waals (vdW) bi-layers. We experimentally observe tunable topological transitions from open (hyperbolic) to closed (elliptic) dispersion contours in twisted bi-layered α-MoO3 at photonic magic angles, induced by…
The principal use of photonic crystals is to engineer the photonic density of states, which controls light-matter coupling. We theoretically show that strained 2D photonic crystals can generate artificial electromagnetic fields and highly degenerate Landau levels. Since photonic crystals are not described by tight-binding, we employ a multiscale expansion of the full wave equation. Using numerical simulations, we observe dispersive Landau levels which we show can be flattened by engineering a pseudoelectric field. Artificial fields yield a design principle for aperiodic nanophotonic systems.
We design an efficient coupler to transmit light from a strip waveguide into the flatband slow mode of a photonic crystal waveguide with ring-shaped holes. The coupler is a section of a photonic crystal waveguide with a higher group velocity, obtained by different ring dimensions. We demonstrate coupling efficiency in excess of 95% over the 8 nm wavelength range where the photonic crystal waveguide exhibits a quasi constant group velocity vg = c/37. An analysis based on the small Fabry-Pérot resonances in the simulated transmission spectra is introduced and used for studying the effect of the …

In this paper, we explore the spectral properties of the moving hollow-core photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs). We find that frequency combs could be generated in the hollow cores of the moving PCWs. Besides, amplitudes of the sidebands in the generated frequency combs are strongly dependent on the spatial field distribution of the core-guided modes of stationary PCWs. Particularly, we find that introduction of the periodic point defects to the innermost rows of the PCW hollow core would significantly modify the spatial field distributions of the guided modes, leading to appearance of the tigh…

Besides, the proposed photonic crystal fiber (PCF) exhibits a high birefringence of $1.886\times10^{-2}$ at the wavelength of $1550 nm$. Furthermore, the nonlinearity, single modeness, effective area etc.…
Engineering the dispersion of light in a metasurface allows for controlling the light-matter interaction strength between light confined in the metasurface and materials placed within its near-field. Specifically, engineering a flatband dispersion increases the photonic density of states thereby enhancing the light-matter interaction. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a metasurface with a flat dispersion at visible wavelengths. We designed and fabricated a suspended one-dimensional gallium phosphide metasurface and measured the photonic band structure via energy-momentum spectroscopy, observ…
We demonstrate a photonic analog of twisted bilayer graphene that has ultra-flat photonic bands and exhibits extreme slow light behavior. Our twisted bilayer photonic device, which has an operating wavelength in C-band of the telecom window, uses two crystalline silicon photonic crystal slabs separated by a methyl methacrylate tunneling layer. We numerically determine the magic angle using a finite-element method and the corresponding photonic band structure, which exhibits a flat band over the entire Brillouin zone. This flat band causes the group velocity to approach zero and introduces ligh…
