We point out the connection between the problem of formulating quantum mechanics in phase space and projecting the motion of a quantum mechanical particle onto a particular Landau level. In particular, we show that lowest Landau level wave functions, which are widely used in studies of quantum Hall effect, are actually phase space wave functions in this context. We demonstrate the usefulness of this understanding by analyzing some simple problems, and propose other utilities.
The derivation of the time dependent Schrödinger equation with transversal and longitudinal relaxation, as the quantum mechanical analog of the classical Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation, has been described. Starting from the classical Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation the transition to quantum mechanics has been performed and the corresponding von-Neumann equation deduced. In a second step the time Schrödinger equation has been derived. Analytical proofs and computer simulations show the correctness and applicability of the derived Schrödinger equation.
The Landauer principle asserts that the energy cost of erasure of one bit of information by the action of a thermal reservoir in equilibrium at temperature T is never less than $kTlog 2$. We discuss Landauer's principle for quantum statistical models describing a finite level quantum system S coupled to an infinitely extended thermal reservoir R. Using Araki's perturbation theory of KMS states and the Avron-Elgart adiabatic theorem we prove, under a natural ergodicity assumption on the joint system S+R, that Landauer's bound saturates for adiabatically switched interactions. The recent work of…
Quantum-mechanical analogue of Landau-Lifshitz equation has been derived. It has been established that Landau-Lifshitz equation is fundamental physical equation underlying the dynamics of spectroscopic transitions and transitional phenomena. New phenomenon is predicted: electrical spin wave resonance (ESWR) being to be electrical analogue of magnetic spin wave resonance.
There is an interesting but not so popular quantity called pseudo orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the Landau-level system, besides the well-known canonical and mechanical OAMs. The pseudo OAM can be regarded as a gauge-invariant extension of the canonical OAM, which is formally gauge invariant and reduces to the canonical OAM in a certain gauge. Since both of the pseudo OAM and the mechanical OAM are gauge invariant, it is impossible to judge which of those is superior to the other solely from the gauge principle. However, these two OAMs have totally different physical meanings. The mechanic…
Consider the quantum evolution of a charged particle subjected to a uniform magnetic field and an electric field E(t) that exists for a finite period of time. The electric field can induce intra-Landau level transitions (magnetic translations) that do not change the energy of the particle. It may also induce energy changing inter-Landau level transitions. Our purpose in this paper is two-fold: We first demonstrate that the inter-Landau level transition probability is completely determined by the Fourier component of the electric field corresponding to the cyclotron frequency. Then we point out…
The studies of mechanical resonators in the quantum regime not only provide insight into the fundamental nature of quantum mechanics of massive objects, but also introduce promising platforms for novel hybrid quantum technologies. Here we demonstrate a configurable interaction between a superconducting qubit and many acoustic modes in the quantum regime. Specifically, we show how consecutive Landau-Zener-Stückelberg (LZS) tunneling type of transitions, which take place when a system is tuned through an avoided crossing of the coupled energy levels, interfere in a multimode system. The work pro…
Fidelity mechanics is formalized as a framework to investigate quantum critical phenomena in quantum many-body systems. This is achieved by introducing fidelity temperature to properly quantify quantum fluctuations, which, together with fidelity entropy and fidelity internal energy, constitute three basic state functions in fidelity mechanics, thus enabling us to formulate analogues of the four thermodynamic laws and Landauer's principle at zero temperature. Fidelity flows are defined and may be interpreted as an alternative form of renormalization group flows. Thus, both stable and unstable f…
One intriguing issue in the nucleon spin decomposition problem is the existence of two types of decompositions, which are representably characterized by two different orbital angular momenta (OAMs) of quarks. The one is the manifestly gauge-invariant mechanical OAM, while the other is the so-called gauge-invariant canonical (g.i.c.) OAM, the concept of which was introduced by Chen et al. To get a deep insight into the difference of these two decompositions, it is therefore vitally important to understand the the physical meanings of the above two OAMs correctly. Also to be clarified is the imp…
We formulate the Landau problem in the context of the noncommutative analog of a surface of constant negative curvature, that is $AdS_2$ surface, and obtain the spectrum and contrast the same with the Landau levels one finds in the case of the commutative $AdS_2$ space.
Starting from the quantum theory of identical particles, we show how to define a classical mechanics that retains information about the quantum statistics. We consider two examples of relevance for the quantum Hall effect: identical particles in the lowest Landau level, and vortices in the Chern-Simons Ginzburg-Landau model. In both cases the resulting {\em classical} statistical mechanics is shown to be a nontrivial classical limit of Haldane's exclusion statistics.
We investigate the representations of the solutions to Maxwell's equations based on the combination of hypercomplex function-theoretical methods with quantum mechanical methods. Our approach provides us with a characterization for the solutions to the time-harmonic Maxwell system in terms of series expansions involving spherical harmonics resp. spherical monogenics. Also, a thorough investigation for the series representation of the solutions in terms of eigenfunctions of Landau operators that encode $n-$dimensional spinless electrons is given. This new insight should lead to important investi…
We construct examples of pseudo-bosons in two dimensions arising from the Hamiltonian for the Landau levels. We also prove a no-go result showing that non-linear combinations of bosonic creation and annihilation operators cannot give rise to pseudo-bosons.
The classical Landau-Lifshitz equation has been derived from quantum mechanics. Starting point is the assumption of a non-Hermitian Hamilton operator to take the energy dissipation into account. The corresponding quantum mechanical time dependent Schrödinger, Liouville and Heisenberg equation have been described and the similarities and differences between classical and quantum mechanical spin dynamics have been discussed. Furthermore, a time dependent Schrödinger equation corresponding to the classical Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation and two ways to include temperature into the quantum mecha…
Developing an earlier proposal (Ne'eman, Damnjanovic, etc), we show herein that there is a Landau continuous phase transition from the exact quantum dynamics to the effectively classical one, occurring via spontaneous superposition breaking (effective hiding), as a special case of the corresponding general formalism (Bernstein). Critical values of the order parameters for this transition are determined by Heisenberg's indeterminacy relations, change continuously, and are in excellent agreement with the recent and remarkable experiments with Bose condensation. It is also shown that such a phase…
Coupled nanomechanical resonators have recently attracted much attention for both fundamental studies in physics and broad applications in high-precession detection or sensing. By studying the Landau-Zener transitions and Rabi oscillation of two coupled resonators, it has been shown that such a two-mode system acts as a classical two-level system bearing the analog to a quantum mechanical two-level one. Here we construct a Stückelberg interferometer with two coupled cantilevers by driving the system through the avoided crossing twice. By measuring the non-adiabatic phase acquired at the Landau…
The aim of this work is to describe the Landau levels transitions of Bloch electrons in doped graphene with an arbitrary time dependent magnetic field in the long wavelength approximation. In particular, transitions from the m Landau level to the m + 1 and m + 2 Landau levels are studied using time-dependent perturbation theory. Time intervals are computed in which transition probabilities tend to zero at low order in the coupling constant. In particular, Landau level transitions are studied in the case of Bloch electrons travelling in the direction of the applied magnetic force and the result…
We study the Landau levels in curved graphene sheets by measuring the discrete energy spectrum in the presence of a magnetic field. We observe that in rippled graphene sheets, the Landau energy levels satisfy the same square root dependence on the energy quantum number as in flat sheets, $E_n \sim \sqrt{n}$. Though, we find that the Landau levels in curved sheets are shifted towards lower energies by an amount proportional to the average spatial deformation of the sheet. Our findings are relevant for the quantum Hall effect in curved graphene sheets, which is directly related to Landau quantiz…
Basic ideas about noncommuting coordinates are summarized, and then coordinate noncommutativity, as it arises in the Landau problem, is investigated. I review a quantum solution to the Landau problem, and evaluate the coordinate commutator in a truncated state space of Landau levels. Restriction to the lowest Landau level reproduces the well known commutator of planar coordinates. Inclusion of a finite number of Landau levels yields a matrix generalization.
The Berry phases for coherent states and squeezed coherent states of Landau levels are calculated. Coherent states of Landau levels are interpreted as a result of a magnetic flux moved adiabatically from infinity to a finite place on the plane. The Abelian Berry phase for coherent states of Landau levels is an analog of the Aharonov- Bohm effect. Moreover, the non-Abelian Berry phase is calculated for the adiabatic evolution of the magnetic field B.
We have recently found that the gravitational field of a static spherical mass removes the Landau degeneracy of the energy levels of a particle moving around the mass inside a magnetic field by splitting the energy of the Landau orbitals. In this paper we present the second part of our investigation of the effect of gravity on Landau levels. We examine the effect of the gravitational fields created by an infinitely long massive cylinder and a rotating spherical mass. In both cases, we show that the degeneracy is again removed thanks to the splitting of the particle's orbitals. The first case w…
It is well established that the Hilbert space for charged particles in a plane subject to a uniform magnetic field can be described by two mutually commuting ladder algebras. We propose a similar formalism for Landau level quantization involving two mutually commuting SU(2) algebras.
In this letter we study the quantum dyamics of a neutral particle in the presence of an external magnetic field. We demonstrate in a specific field-dipole configuration that we have a quantization similar to the Landau Levels. We investigate this quantization motivated by the recent analysis of Landau-Aharonov-Casher(LAC) quantization of Ericsson and Sjöqvist[Phys Rev. A {\bf 65} 013607 (2001)]. The energy eigenfuction and eigenvalues are obtained.
We consider the level-crossing problem in a three-level system with non-linearly time-varying Hamiltonian (time-dependence $t^{-3}$). We study the validity of the so-called independent crossing approximation in the Landau-Zener model by making comparison with results obtained numerically in density matrix approach. We also demonstrate the failure of the so-called "nearest zero" approximation of the Landau-Zener level-crossing probability integral.
