We trained a model to automatically transliterate Judeo-Arabic texts into Arabic script, enabling Arabic readers to access those writings. We employ a recurrent neural network (RNN), combined with the connectionist temporal classification (CTC) loss to deal with unequal input/output lengths. This obligates adjustments in the training data to avoid input sequences that are shorter than their corresponding outputs. We also utilize a pretraining stage with a different loss function to improve network converge. Since only a single source of parallel text was available for training, we take advantage of the possibility of generating data synthetically. We train a model that has the capability to memorize words in the output language, and that also utilizes context for distinguishing ambiguities in the transliteration. We obtain an improvement over the baseline 9.5% character error, achieving 2% error with our best configuration. To measure the contribution of context to learning, we also tested word-shuffled data, for which the error rises to 2.5%.

In this paper, we make freely accessible ANETAC our English-Arabic named entity transliteration and classification dataset that we built from freely available parallel translation corpora. The dataset contains 79,924 instances, each instance is a triplet (e, a, c), where e is the English named entity, a is its Arabic transliteration and c is its class that can be either a Person, a Location, or an Organization. The ANETAC dataset is mainly aimed for the researchers that are working on Arabic named entity transliteration, but it can also be used for named entity classification purposes.

A hybrid approach for the transliteration of Algerian Arabizi: A primary study In this paper, we present a hybrid approach for the transliteration of the Algerian Arabizi. We define a set of rules enable us the passage from Arabizi to Arabic. Through these rules, we generate a set of candidates for the transliteration of each Arabizi word into arabic. Then, we extract the best candidate. This approach was evaluated by using three test corpora, and the obtained results show an improvement of the precision score which is equal to 75.11% for the best result. These results allow us to verify that …
Transliteration is a key component of machine translation systems and software internationalization. This paper demonstrates that neural sequence-to-sequence models obtain state of the art or close to state of the art results on existing datasets. In an effort to make machine transliteration accessible, we open source a new Arabic to English transliteration dataset and our trained models.
We analyze some of the fundamental design challenges that impact the development of a multilingual state-of-the-art named entity transliteration system, including curating bilingual named entity datasets and evaluation of multiple transliteration methods. We empirically evaluate the transliteration task using traditional weighted finite state transducer (WFST) approach against two neural approaches: the encoder-decoder recurrent neural network method and the recent, non-sequential Transformer method. In order to improve availability of bilingual named entity transliteration datasets, we releas…
Social media user-generated text is actually the main resource for many NLP tasks. This text however, does not follow the standard rules of writing. Moreover, the use of dialect such as Moroccan Arabic in written communications increases further NLP tasks complexity. A dialect is a verbal language that does not have a standard orthography, which leads users to improvise spelling while writing. Thus, for the same word we can find multiple forms of transliterations. Subsequently, it is mandatory to normalize these different transliterations to one canonical word form. To reach this goal, we have…

The recognition of Arabic Named Entities (NE) is a problem in different domains of Natural Language Processing (NLP) like automatic translation. Indeed, NE translation allows the access to multilingual in-formation. This translation doesn't always lead to expected result especially when NE contains a person name. For this reason and in order to ameliorate translation, we can transliterate some part of NE. In this context, we propose a method that integrates translation and transliteration together. We used the linguis-tic NooJ platform that is based on local grammars and transducers. In this p…
Kurdish is written in different scripts. The two most popular scripts are Latin and Persian-Arabic. However, not all Kurdish readers are familiar with both mentioned scripts that could be resolved by automatic transliterators. So far, the developed tools mostly transliterate Persian-Arabic scripts into Latin. We present a transliterator to transliterate Kurdish texts in Latin into Persian-Arabic script. We also discuss the issues that should be considered in the transliteration process. The tool is a part of Kurdish BLARK, and it is publicly available for non-commercial use

Now a day computer is necessary for human being and it is very useful in many fields like search engine, text processing, short messaging services, voice chatting and text recognition. Since last many years there are many tools and techniques that have been developed to support the writing of language script. Most of the Asian languages like Arabic, Urdu, Persian, Chains and Korean are written in Roman alphabets. Roman alphabets are the most commonly used for transliteration of languages, which have non-Latin scripts. For writing Urdu characters as an input, there are many layouts which are al…

Arabizi is Arabic text that is written using Latin characters. Arabizi is used to present both Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) or Arabic dialects. It is commonly used in informal settings such as social networking sites and is often with mixed with English. In this paper we address the problems of: identifying Arabizi in text and converting it to Arabic characters. We used word and sequence-level features to identify Arabizi that is mixed with English. We achieved an identification accuracy of 98.5%. As for conversion, we used transliteration mining with language modeling to generate equivalent A…

Data annotation is an important but time-consuming and costly procedure. To sort a text into two classes, the very first thing we need is a good annotation guideline, establishing what is required to qualify for each class. In the literature, the difficulties associated with an appropriate data annotation has been underestimated. In this paper, we present a novel approach to automatically construct an annotated sentiment corpus for Algerian dialect (a Maghrebi Arabic dialect). The construction of this corpus is based on an Algerian sentiment lexicon that is also constructed automatically. The …
