We present a model for third-family quark-lepton unification at the TeV scale featuring a composite Higgs sector. The model is based on a variant of the Pati-Salam model, the so-called 4321 model, consisting of the gauge group $SU(4)\times SU(3)^\prime\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_X$. The spontaneous symmetry breaking to the SM gauge group is triggered dynamically by a QCD-like confining sector. The same strong dynamics also produces the Higgs as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson, connecting the energy scales of both sectors. The model predicts a massive $U_1$ vector leptoquark coupled dominantly to the third generation, recently put forward as a possible solution to the $B$-meson anomalies.
We review several problems of conventional Grand Unification and some new approaches. In particular, we discuss strongly coupled Grand Unified Theories. Standard Model may emerge as a low energy effective theory of composite particles in these models. We construct a realistic model of this kind.
Providing an Ultra-Violet completion valid up to the Planck scale is of paramount importance to validate the composite Higgs paradigm, at par with supersymmetry. We propose the first complete and feasible framework, based on partial unification of a confining hypercolor gauge group, where couplings of the standard model fermions are mediated by both gauge and scalar bosons. We demonstrate our approach by providing an explicit model based on a Techni-Pati-Salam unification, $SU(8)_{\rm PS}\times SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$, able to generate masses for all fermion generations, including neutrinos, vi…
The recent measurements of the solar neutrino mixing angle theta_{sol} and the Cabibbo mixing angle theta_C reveal a surprising relation, theta_{sol}+theta_C ~ pi/4. Interpreting this empirical relation as a support of the quark-lepton unification, we find that the PMNS mixing matrix can be decomposed into a CKM-like matrix and maximal mixing matrices, which can give profound implications on the quark-lepton unification. We explore a possibility to probe the implication of quark-lepton unification by considering the relative sizes of branching ratios for the lepton flavor violating radiative d…
A scenario combining a model of early (TeV) unification of quarks and leptons with the physics of large extra dimensions provides a natural mechanism linking quark and lepton masses at TeV scale. This has been dubbed as early quark-lepton mass unification by one of us (PQH) in one of the two models of early quark-lepton unification, which are consistent with data, namely SU(4)_PS \otimes SU(2)_L \otimes SU(2)_R \otimes SU(2)_H. In particular, it focused on the issue of naturally light Dirac neutrino. The present paper will focus on similar issues in the other model, namely SU(4)_PS \otimes SU(…
We study meson decays mediated by the heavy gauge bosons of the Pati-Salam model of quark-lepton unification. We consider the scenarios in which the tau lepton is associated with the third, second, and first generation of quarks. The most sensitive probes, depending on the scenario, are rare K, pi, and B decays.
We present a model of quark and lepton masses and mixings based on A4 family symmetry, a discrete subgroup of an SO(3) flavour symmetry, together with Pati-Salam unification. It accommodates tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing via constrained sequential dominance with a particularly simple vacuum alignment mechanism emerging through the effective D-term contributions to the scalar potential.
A TeV-scale scenario is constructed in an attempt to understand the relationship between quark and lepton masses. This scenario combines a model of early (TeV) unification of quarks and leptons with the physics of large extra dimensions. It demonstrates a relationship between quark and lepton mass scales at rather ``low'' (TeV) energies which will be dubbed as {\em early quark-lepton mass unification}. It also predicts that the masses of the neutrinos are naturally light and Dirac. There is an interesting correlation between neutrino masses and those of the unconventionally charged fermions wh…
We systematically analyze the correlations between the various leptonic and hadronic flavor violating processes arising in SUSY Grand Unified Theories. Using the GUT-symmetric relations between the soft SUSY breaking parameters, we assess the impact of hadronic and leptonic flavor observables on the SUSY sources of flavor violation.
SU(5) $\otimes$ SU(5) provides a minimal grand unification scheme for fermions and gauge forces if there are vector-like quarks and leptons in nature. We explore the gauge coupling unification in a non-supersymmetric model of this type, and study its implications for proton decay. The properties of vector-like quarks and intermediate scales that emerge from coupling unification play a central role in suppressing proton decay. We find that in this model, the familiar decay mode $p \to e^+ π^0$ may have a partial lifetime within the reach of currently planned experiments.
We argue that a high precision measurement of the neutrino mixing parameter $θ_{13}$, within a three neutrino seesaw framework can throw important light on the question of whether the quarks and leptons unify into a single matter at high scales. Based on a number of examples, we conclude that a value of $θ_{13} \leq {\frac{Δm^2_{\odot}}{Δm^2_A}}\simeq 0.04$ would require at the minimum a pure leptonic interchange symmetry between $μ$ and $τ$ generations for its natural theoretical understanding and will disfavor a quark-lepton unification type theory such as those based on $SU(4)_c$ or SO(10) …
The alternative $SU(4) \otimes SU(2)_L \otimes SU(2)_R$ gauge model, which allows unification of the quarks and leptons at the TeV scale, is studied in detail. We discuss the implications for nucleon decay, B and K rare meson decays and neutrino masses. We also explain how this model solves the gauge hierarchy problem without using supersymmetry or extra large dimensions.
We study a grand unified SU(5)xSU(5)' model supplemented by D2 parity. The D2 greatly reduces the number of parameters and is important for phenomenology. The model, we present, has various novel and interesting properties. Because of the specific pattern of grand unification symmetry breaking and emerged strong dynamics at low energies, the Standard Model leptons, along with right-handed/sterile neutrinos, come out as composite states. The generation of the charged fermion and neutrino masses are studied within the considered scenario. Moreover, the issues of gauge coupling unification and nu…
We study a coset-space unification model for families based on $E_7/SU(5) \times U(1)^3$. We find that qualitative structure of quark and lepton mass matrices in this model describes very well the observation. We stress, in particular, that the large mixing angle, $\sin^22θ_{ν_μν_τ} \simeq 1$, required for the atmospheric neutrino oscillation reported by the SuperKamiokande collaboration, is naturally obtained, which is a consequence of unparallel family structure in the present coset-space unification.
The early petite unification (PUT) of quarks and leptons at TeV scales with sin^2 theta_W(M^2_Z) used as a constraint, necessitates the introduction of extra quarks and leptons with unconventional electric charges (up to 4/3 for the quarks and 2 for the leptons). This talk, in honor of Paul Frampton's 60th birthday, will be devoted to the motivation and construction of models of early unification and to their implications, including the issues of rare decays and unconventional fermions.
The quark and lepton mass patterns upset their naive unification. In this paper, a new approach to solve this problem is proposed. Model-independently, we find that a successful unification can be achieved. A mechanism is identified by which the large top quark mass renders its third-generation leptonic partner very light. This state is thus identified with the electron. We then provide a generic dynamical implementation of this mechanism, using tree-level exchanges of vector leptons to relate the quark and lepton flavor structures. In a supersymmetric context, this same mechanism splits the s…
In combination with supersymmetry, flavor symmetry may relate quarks with leptons, even in the absence of a grand-unification group. We propose an SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1) model where both supersymmetry and the assumed A4 flavor symmetries are softly broken, reproducing well the observed fermion mass hierarchies and predicting: (i) a relation between down-type quarks and charged lepton masses, and (ii) a correlation between the Cabibbo angle in the quark sector, and the reactor angle characterizing CP violation in neutrino oscillations.
The idea of unifying quarks and leptons in a gauge symmetry is very appealing. However, such an unification gives rise to leptoquark type gauge bosons for which current collider limits push their masses well beyond the TeV scale. We present a model in the framework of extra dimensions which breaks such quark-lepton unification symmetry via compactification at the TeV scale. These color triplet leptoquark gauge bosons, as well as the new quarks present in the model, can be produced at the LHC with distinctive final state signatures. These final state signals include high p_T multi-jets and mult…
There is a unique $SU(4) \otimes SU(2)_L \otimes SU(2)_R$ gauge model which allows quarks and leptons to be unified at the TeV scale. It is already known that the neutrino masses arise radiatively in the model and are naturally light. We study the atmospheric, solar and LSND neutrino anomalies within the framework of this model.
In the context of Supersymmetric Grand Unified theories with soft breaking terms arising at the Planck scale, it is generally possible to link flavor changing neutral current and CP violating processes occurring in the leptonic and hadronic sectors. We study the correlation between flavor changing squark and slepton mass insertions in models à la SU(5). We show that the constraints coming from lepton flavor violation exhibit a strong impact on CP-violating B decays.
In the family grand unification models (fGUTs), we propose that gauge U(1)'s beyond the minimal GUT gauge group are family gauge symmetries. For the symmetry $L_μ-L_τ$, i.e. $Q_{2}-Q_{3}$ in our case, to be useful for the LHC anomaly, we discuss an SU(9) fGUT and also present an example in Georgi's SU(11) fGUT.
The WMAP dark matter constraints on b-$τ$ Yukawa Unification in the presence of massive neutrinos is revisited. The predictions for the bottom quark mass are observed to be modified by the large neutrino mixing suggested by the data. This enables Yukawa unification also for large $\tanβ$, and for positive $μ$ that were previously disfavoured. Consequently, the allowed parameter space for neutralino dark matter differs from the MSSM one. We also find that the parameter space being compatible with dark matter also predicts detectable rates for Lepton Flavour Violation at the LHC.
We present a new constraint on a lepton mixing matrix $V$ from lepton-flavor violating (LFV) processes in supersymmetric standard models with massive neutrinos. Here, we assume Yukawa-coupling unification $f_{ν3}\simeq f_{\rm top}$, in which $τ$-neutrino Yukawa coupling $f_{ν3}$ is unified into top-quark Yukawa coupling $f_{\rm top}$ at the unification scale $M_*\simeq 3\times 10^{16}$ GeV. We show that the present experimental bound on $μ\to e γ$ decay already gives a stringent limit on the lepton mixing (typically $V_{13}<0.02$ for $V_{23}=1/\sqrt{2}$). Therefore, many existing neutrino-mass…
The unification of the quark and charged lepton flavor structures is revisited using the tools of Minimal Flavor Violation (MFV). Under that framework, we first identify a unique point in parameter space where flavor universality is maximally violated. Though from the point of view of the usual polynomial MFV expansions, standing close to that point would require unacceptable fine-tunings, it is automatically attained with infinite geometric MFV series. Remarkably, this peculiar point is precisely where the charged lepton Yukawa coupling can be expressed naturally in terms of those of the quar…
We show how an intermediate gauge symmetry breaking scale can be a source of lepton flavor violation and EDM of electron and neutron in SUSY GUTs. The Universal soft supersymmetry breaking operators can be introduced at the GUT scale or above.
There are experimental indications of large flavor mixing between $ν_{μ}$ and $ν_τ$. In the unification models, in which the massless sector includes extra particles beyond the standard model, there possibly appear the mixings between quarks (leptons) and the extra particles. When large mixings occur, lepton flavor mixings can be quite different from quark flavor mixings. By taking the string inspired $SU(6) \times SU(2)_R$ model with global flavor symmetries, we obtain the neutrino flavor mixing $\sin θ_{23} \simeq λ= \sin θ_C$ around the unification scale. It can be expected that due to larg…
Baryogenesis appears to require lepton number violation. This is naturally realized in extensions of the standard model containing right-handed neutrinos. We discuss the generation of a baryon asymmetry by the out-of-equilibrium decay of heavy Majorana neutrinos in these models, without and with supersymmetry. All relevant lepton number violating scattering processes which can inhibit the generation of an asymmetry are taken into account. We assume a similar pattern of mixings and masses for neutrinos and up-type quarks, as suggested by SO(10) unification. This implies that B-L is broken at th…
A recent surge of interest in the {\em early} unification of quarks and leptons, has prompted us to revive a paper \cite{HBB} written twenty two years ago. We provided there a general discussion of quark-lepton unification characterized by the gauge group $G_{S} \otimes G_{W}$ with two couplings $g_S$ and $g_W$ and by the unification mass scales $10\tev-1000\tev$. The constraint from $\sin^2 θ_{W}$ restricts the choices for $G_W$ and our favorite model was chosen to be $SU(4)_{\rm PS}\otimes SU(2)^4$. We review the main results of \cite{HBB}, update the original $SU(4)_{\rm PS}\otimes SU(2)^4$…
We show that the large mixing between $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$ observed by the SuperKamiokande collaboration is a quite natural prediction in a large class of seesaw models. This large mixing is basically due to the unparallel family structure suggested from the observed mass hierarchies in quark and lepton mass matrices. We show that the unparallel family structure is automatically realized in ``coset-space family unification'' model based on $E_7/SU(5) \times U(1)^3$. This model also suggests the small angle MSW solution to the solar neutrino problem.
We study phenomenological predictions in the scenario with the quasi-degenerate relation among neutrino Dirac masses, m_D1 simeq m_D2 < m_D3, assuming the bi-maximal mixing at the grand unification scale in supersymmetric standard models with right-handed neutrinos. A sufficient lepton number asymmetry can be produced for successful leptogenesis. The lepton flavor violating process mu to e gamma can be enhanced due to the Majorana phase, so that it can be detectable at forthcoming experiments. The processes tau to e gamma and tau to mu gamma are suppressed because of the structure of neutrino …
In a recent paper, we pointed out that mixing of the light neutrinos with heavy gauge singlet states could reconcile the Z-pole data from e+e- colliders and the nu_mu (anti-nu_mu) scattering data from the NuTeV experiment at Fermilab. We further noted that the mixing angle required to fit the data is much larger than what would be expected from the conventional seesaw mechanism. In this paper, we show how such mixings can be arranged by a judicious choice of the neutrino mass texture. We also argue that by invoking the unification of the Dirac mass matrix for the up-type quarks and the neutrin…
We study quark and lepton masses and mixings in a double covering of modular $A_4$ flavor symmetry in which we search for common solution of a single modulus $τ$, applying chi-square numerical analysis under the as minimum framework as possible. We have found the common region of $τ$ within $5σ$ interval that is narrow in case of normal hierarchy, but not found in case of inverted hierarchy.
In the dynamical gauge-Higgs unification of electroweak interactions in the Randall-Sundrum warped spacetime the Higgs boson mass is predicted in the range 120 GeV -- 290 GeV, provided that the spacetime structure is determined at the Planck scale. Couplings of quarks and leptons to gauge bosons and their Kaluza-Klein (KK) excited states are determined by the masses of quarks and leptons. All quarks and leptons other than top quarks have very small couplings to the KK excited states of gauge bosons. The universality of weak interactions is slightly broken by magnitudes of $10^{-8}$, $10^{-6}$ …
A grand unified model based on SU(5) and supersymmetry is presented. Pairs of superfields belonging to 15 and 15* representations are newly introduced, while gauge coupling unification is satisfied. Improper mass relations in the minimal model between charged leptons and d-type quarks are corrected. Neutrinos have non-vanishing masses, with large angles for generation mixings of the leptons being compatible with the small angles of the quarks. Constraints from proton decay are relaxed. A new source for lepton number generation in the early universe is provided.
A model for electroweak unification of quarks and leptons, in a gauge group $SU_{C}(3)\times SU(4)\times U_{X}(1)$ is constructed. The model requires, three generations of quarks and leptons which are replicas (mirror) of the standard quarks and leptons. The gauge group $SU(4)\times U_{X}(1)$ is broken in such a way so as to reproduce standard model and to generate heavy masses for the vector bosons ($W^{\pm}_{R_μ}$, $Z^{\prime}_μ$,$Z^{\prime\prime}_μ$), the leptoquarks and mirror fermions. It is shown lower limit on mass scale of mirror fermions is $m_{E}\geq\frac{m_{Z}}{2}$, $E^{-}$ being th…
The evolution of Standard Model gauge couplings is studied in a non-supersymmetric scenario in which the hierarchy problem is resolved by Higgs compositeness above the weak scale. It is argued that massiveness of the top quark combined with precision tests of the bottom quark imply that the right-handed top must also be composite. If, further, the Standard Model gauge symmetry is embedded into a simple subgroup of the unbroken composite-sector flavor symmetry, then precision coupling unification is shown to occur at~10^{15} GeV, to a degree comparable to supersymmetric unification.
In a recent paper, we showed that tree level up-down unification of fermion Yukawa couplings is a natural consequence of a large class of supersymmetric models. They can lead to viable quark masses and mixings for moderately large values of $\tanβ$ with interesting and testable predictions for CP violation in the hadronic sector. In this letter, we extend our discussion to the leptonic sector focusing on one particular class of these models, the supersymmetric left-right model with the seesaw mechanism for neutrino masses. We show that fitting the solar and the atmospheric neutrino data consid…
We show how the neutrino mixing angles and oscillation phase can be predicted from tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing, corrected by charged lepton mixing angles which are related to quark mixing angles via quark-lepton unification. The tri-bimaximal neutrino mixing can naturally originate from the see-saw mechanism via constrained sequential dominance (CSD), where CSD can result from the vacuum alignment of a non-Abelian family symmetry such as SO(3). We construct a realistic model of quark and lepton masses and mixings based on SO(3) family symmetry with quark-lepton unification based on the Pati-…
An origin of flavor mixings in quark and lepton sectors is still a mystery, and a structure of the flavor mixings in lepton sector seems completely different from that of quark sector. In this letter, we point out that the flavor mixing angles in quark and lepton sectors could be unified at a high energy scale, when neutrinos are degenerate. It means that a minimal flavor violation at a high energy scale can induce a rich variety of flavor mixings in quark and lepton sectors at a low energy scale through quantum corrections.
We explain the imbalance of the flavor mixing angles between the quark and the lepton sectors in the context of the SU(5) GUT with the see-saw mechanism. The quark masses and the CKM matrix elements are obtained by using, respectively, the Fritzsch and Branco - Silva-Marcos form for the up- and down-quark Yukawa matrices (y^u and y^d) at the GUT scale. The charged-lepton Yukawa matrix (y^e) is the transpose of y^d, modified by the Georgi-Jarlskog factor. We show that the neutrino masses and mixing angles suggested by the recent solar and atmospheric neutrinos are then obtained from a simple te…
We discuss various aspects of the early petite unification (PUT) of quarks and leptons based on the gauge group G_PUT=SU(4)_PS x SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x SU(2)_H. This unification takes place at the scale M= O(1-2 TeV) and gives the correct value of sin^2 theta_W(M_Z^2) without the violation of the upper bound on the K_L -> mu e rate and the limits on FCNC processes. These properties require the existence of three new generations of unconventional quarks and leptons with charges up to 4/3 (for quarks) and 2 (for leptons) and masses O(250 GeV) in addition to the standard three generations of quarks …
We point out unique relations between the decay widths for leptoquarks and Higgs bosons that can be used to test the unification of quarks and leptons at the TeV scale. We discuss the main predictions of the minimal theory for quark-lepton unification and show how the different decays for leptoquarks and Higgses are related by the symmetry of the theory.
We show that one can explain the neutral and charged anomalies in B-meson decays in the minimal theory for quark-lepton unification. The implications for flavor violating processes are discussed in detail. Strikingly, experimental observations suggest that the unification of quarks and leptons could be realized below the ${\cal O}(10^2)$ TeV scale.
There is a unique $\hbox{SU(4)}\otimes\hbox{SU(2)}_L \otimes \hbox{SU(2)}_R$ gauge model which allows quarks and leptons to be unified at the TeV scale -- thereby making the model testable and avoiding the gauge hierarchy problem. In its minimal form, this model could quite naturally accommodate simultaneous solutions to the solar and LSND neutrino oscillation data. The atmospheric neutrino anomaly can be easily accommodated by mirror-symmetrising the minimal model. The model also contains three right-handed neutrinos, with masses in the range 1 keV to $\sim$ 1 GeV. We investigate the implicat…
We study the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model predicted in the minimal theory for quark-lepton unification that can describe physics at the low scale. We discuss the relations among the different decay widths of the new Higgs bosons and study their phenomenology at the Large Hadron Collider. As a result of matter unification, this theory predicts a correlation between the decay widths of the heavy Higgs bosons into tau leptons and bottom quarks. We point out how to probe this theory using these relations and discuss the relevant flavor constraints.
We make a systematic theoretical analysis of the masses and their variation with energy by solving the renormalization group equation (RGE) in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The unification fermion masses of around 115 GeV at GeV scale has been derived by Deo and Maharana. Here we undertake the unfinished but the important task of calculating the masses and their running. The unification mass and group theoretic constants for the model are known. The top mass and its descent is studied very carefully. We find that the Ramond,Roberts and Ross value of the Wolfenstein paramete…
In the light of the gathering evidence for $ν_μ-ν_τ$ neutrino oscillations, coming in particular from the Super-Kamiokande data on atmospheric neutrinos, we re-analyze the unification of gauge and Yukawa couplings within the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM). Guided by a range of different grand-unified models, we stress the relevance of large mixing in the lepton sector for the question of bottom-tau Yukawa coupling unification. We also discuss the dependence of the favoured value of $\tanβ$ on the characteristics of the high-energy quark and lepton mass matrices. …
We present an SU(12) unification model with three light chiral families, avoiding any external flavor symmetries. The hierarchy of quark and lepton masses and mixings is explained by higher dimensional Yukawa interactions involving Higgs bosons that contain SU(5) singlet fields with VEVs about 50 times smaller than the SU(12) unification scale. The presented model has been analyzed in detail and found to be in very good agreement with the observed quark and lepton masses and mixings.
In this talk, I will present the status of lepton flavor physics in composite Higgs models with partial compositeness in the light of recent data in the lepton sector. I will consider anarchic flavor setups, scenarios with flavor symmetries, and minimal incarnations of the see-saw mechanism that naturally predict non-negligible lepton compositeness. The focus will be on lepton flavor violating processes, dipole moments, and on probes of lepton flavor universality, all providing stringent tests of partial compositeness. The expected size of effects in the different approaches to lepton flavor a…
Motivated by the prospects for an improved test of lepton universality in K -> l νdecays by the NA62 experiment at CERN, we study predictions for the possible lepton non-universality in K -> l νdecays in supersymmetric models. Violations of μ-e universality in this process may originate from mixing effects in the right-handed slepton sector, providing a unique window into this aspect of supersymmetric flavour physics in the large-\tanβregion. Minimal unification scenarios with universal soft supersymmetry-breaking terms at the GUT scale would predict negligible violation of lepton universality…
The two dominant processes of lepton flavor violation, mu to 3e and mu to e conversion in atomic nuclei caused by neutral KK gauge boson exchanges at tree level, are studied in the context of five dimensional gauge-Higgs unification scenario. The key point of the flavor violation is a fact that the bulk masses and the brane ones cannot be simultaneously diagonalized. We estimate the branching ratio of each processes and obtain the lower bound of compactification scale around weak scale from the current experimental data. We discuss the reasons why the final result is not so severe although the…
We study the lepton sector of composite Higgs models with partial compositeness. The standard anarchic scenario is in conflict with the absence of observable charged lepton flavor violation. This tension can be completely solved in MFV scenarios that require either left-handed or right-handed SM leptons to be equally composite. Constraints on this scenario are weak and the composite lepton partners could be as light as few hundreds GeVs with interesting LHC signatures. The contribution to the muon (g-2) in theories where the Higgs is a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson is also discussed.
We present new theories of dynamical SUSY breaking in which the strong interactions that break SUSY also give rise to composite quarks and leptons with naturally small Yukawa couplings. In these models, SUSY breaking is communicated directly to the composite fields without ``messenger'' interactions. The compositeness scale can be anywhere between 10 TeV and the Planck scale. These models can naturally solve the supersymmetric flavor problem, and generically predict sfermion mass unification independent from gauge unification.
In this paper, we consider a lopsided flavor texture compatible with thermal leptogenesis in partially composite Pati--Salam unification. The Davidson--Ibarra bound $M_{νR1} \gtrsim 10^9$ GeV for the successful thermal leptogenesis can be recast to the Froggatt--Nielsen (FN) charge of the lopsided texture. We found the FN charge $n_{\nu1}$ of the lightest right-handed neutrino $ν_{R1}$ can not be larger than a upper bound, $n_{\nu1} \lesssim 4.5$. From the viewpoint of unification, the FN charges of the neutrinos $n_{νi}$ should be the same to that of other SM fermions. Then, two cases $n_{νi}…
We present a class of supersymmetric models with complete generations of composite quarks and leptons using recent non-perturbative results for the low energy dynamics of supersymmetric QCD. In these models, the quarks arise as composite "mesons" and the leptons emerge as composite "baryons." The quark and lepton flavor symmetries are linked at the preon level. Baryon number violation is automatically suppressed by accidental symmetries. We give some speculations on how this model might be made realistic.
After some general remarks about SU_L(4) electroweak unification, the model is extended to SU_L(4)xU_X(1) to accomodate fractionally charged quarks. The unification scale is expected to be in TeV region. A right-handed Majorana neutrino along with known lepton are put in the fundamental representation of SU_L(4) with Y_X=0. The see-saw mechanism for neutrino masses and flavor mixing in neutrino sector is a natural feature of the model. The lepton number violating processes can occure through dilepton gauge bosons contained in the model.
Unified theories based on an extended left-right symmetric group, $SU(4) \times SU(2)^4$, are constructed in five dimensions. The compactification scale is assumed to be only a loop factor above the weak scale, so that the weak mixing angle is predicted to be close to its tree level value of 0.239. Boundary conditions in the 5th dimension break $SU(4) \to SU(3) \times U(1)_{B-L}$, removing powerful constraints from $K_L \to μe$ while allowing a reliable calculation of the leading logarithm corrections to $\sin^2 θ$. The compactification scale is expected in the 1--5 TeV region, depending on ho…
We show that a special type of colliding 7-brane configuration of a codimension-two singularity realizes not only a six-dimensional spectrum with exactly the same quantum numbers as that of the three-generation E7/(SU(5) x U(1)^3) coset family unification model, but also the three sets of nonchiral singlet pairs with precisely the correct U(1) charges needed for explaining the Yukawa hierarchies and large lepton-flavor mixings in a well-known seesaw scenario.
We investigate the possibility that quarks and leptons are unified at a low energy scale much smaller than the grand unified scale. A simple theory for quark-lepton unification based on the gauge group SU(4)_C X SU(2)_L X U(1)_R is proposed. This theory predicts the existence of scalar leptoquarks which could be produced at the Large Hadron Collider. In order to have light neutrinos without fine tuning, their masses are generated through the inverse see-saw mechanism.
