We investigate the escape probabilities of the photons near the horizon of the Kerr-Sen black hole. We find that the escape probabilities of the photons are nonzero in the event horizon limit of the extreme Kerr-Sen black hole if the light sources are near the equator. We show that the escape probability of a photon increases with the radial position of the light source. It is also uncovered that the escape probability decreases if the light source with constant radius moves from the equatorial plane to the pole. Besides, we discover that the escape probability of a photon in the Carter frame is always greater than the one in the locally non-rotating frame, except on the pole, where they are equal.
The conjectured magnetized Kerr/CFT correspondence states that the quantum theory of gravity in the near horizon of extreme Kerr black holes immersed by the magnetic field, Near Horizon Extreme Magnetized Kerr black holes, is holographic dual to a two-dimensional chiral conformal field theory. To obtain Near Horizon Extreme Magnetized Kerr geometry, the extreme limit of the magnetized Kerr metric is taken so, $ a=M $ and then continued by transforming the coordinates to have a warped and twisted product of $ \textrm{AdS}_2 \times \textrm{S}^2 $, and also with the Near Horizon Extreme Kerr metr…
It has been shown that extremal Kerr black holes can be used as particle accelerators and arbitrarily high energy may be obtained near the event horizon. We study particle collisions near the event horizon (outer horizon) and Cauchy horizon (inner horizon) of a non-extremal Kerr black hole. Firstly, we provide a general proof showing that particles cannot collide with arbitrarily high energies at the outter horizon. Secondly, we show that ultraenergetic collisions can occur near the inner horizon of a Kerr black hole with any spin parameter $a$.
A central feature of the most elementary rotating black hole (BH) solution in General Relativity is the Kerr bound, which, for vacuum Kerr BHs, can be expressed either in terms of the ADM or the horizon "charges". This bound, however, is not a fundamental properties of General Relativity and stationary, asymptotically flat, regular (on and outside an event horizon) BHs are known to violate the Kerr bound, both in terms of their ADM and horizon quantities. Examples include the recently discovered Kerr BHs with scalar or Proca hair. Here, we point the fact that the Kerr bound in terms of horizon…
We study hidden symmetries, the symmetries associated with the Killing tensors, of the near horizon geometry of odd-dimensional Kerr-AdS-NUT black hole in two limits: generic extremal and extremal vanishing horizon (EVH) limits. Starting from Kerr-AdS-NUT black hole in ellipsoidal coordinates which admits integrable geodesic equations, we obtain the near horizon extremal/EVH geometries and their principal and Killing tensors by taking the near horizon limit. We explicitly demonstrate that geodesic equations are separable and integrable on theses near horizon geometries. We also compute the con…
We numerically explore the structure of quasi-normal (QN) frequencies of the five-dimensional small and large Kerr-anti de Sitter (Kerr-AdS${}_5$) black hole with equal and unequal rotations. Our investigation also covers low and high Hawking temperatures. We then study the stability of the Kerr-AdS${}_5$ black hole and the structure of highly damped QN modes, which would reflect the thermodynamic property of the Kerr-AdS${}_5$ black hole. We find that the highly damped complex QN frequencies of a nearly maximally spinning Kerr-AdS${}_5$ black hole have the periodic separation of the surface g…
We show that the horizon instability of the extremal Kerr black hole is associated with a singular branch point in the Green function at the superradiant bound frequency. We study generic initial data supported away from the horizon and find an enhanced growth rate due to nonaxisymmetric modes. The growth is controlled by the conformal weight of each mode. We speculate on connections to near-extremal black holes and holographic duality.
The electrovac axisymmetric extreme isolated horizon/CFT correspondence is considered. By expansion techniques under the Bondi-like coordinates, it is proved that the near horizon geometry of electrovac axisymmetric extreme isolated horizon is unique. Furthermore, explicit coordinate transformation between the Bondi-like coordinates and the Poincare-type coordinates for the near horizon metric of the extreme Kerr-Newmann spacetime is found. Based on these analyses and the thermodynamics of the isolated horizon, then, the Kerr/CFT correspondence is generalized to nonstationary extreme black hol…
We study a class of limits of the higher-dimensional Kerr-NUT-(A)dS spacetimes where particular roots of metric functions degenerate. Namely, we obtain the Taub-NUT-(A)dS and the extreme near-horizon geometries as two examples of our limiting procedure. The symmetries of the resulting spacetimes are enhanced which is manifested by the presence of supplementary Killing vectors and decomposition of Killing tensors into Killing vectors.
We study Killing horizons and their neighbourhoods in the Kerr-NUT-(anti-)de Sitter and the accelerated Kerr-NUT-(anti-)de Sitter spacetimes. The geometries of the horizons have an irremovable singularity at one of the poles, unless the parameters characterising the spacetimes satisfy the constraint we derive and solve in the current paper. In the Kerr-NUT-de Sitter case, the constraint relates the cosmological constant of spacetime and the horizon area, leaving 3 parameters free. In the accelerated case the acceleration becomes a 4th parameter that allows the cosmological constant to take arb…
Although the circular photon orbit and ISCO for the Kerr black hole remain distinct from each other and from the horizon in the extremal spin limit on a constant Boyer-Lindquist time slice, on a horizon-crossing slice they both coincide with the null generators of the horizon.
The extremal Kerr black hole with the angular momentum J is conjectured to be dual to CFT with central charges c_L=c_R=12J. However, the central charge in the right sector remains to be explicitly derived so far. In order to investigate this issue, we introduce new near horizon limits of (near) extremal Kerr and five-dimensional Myers-Perry black holes. We obtain Virasoro algebras as asymptotic symmetries and calculate the central charges associated with them. One of them is equivalent to that of the previous studies, and the other is non-zero, but still the order of near extremal parameter. R…
We study gravitational perturbations around the near horizon geometry of the (near) extreme Kerr black hole. By considering a consistent truncation for the metric fluctuations, we obtain a solution to the linearized Einstein equations. The dynamics is governed by two master fields which, in the context of the nAdS$_2$/nCFT$_1$ correspondence, are both irrelevant operators of conformal dimension $Δ=2$. These fields control the departure from extremality by breaking the conformal symmetry of the near horizon region. One of the master fields is tied to large diffeomorphisms of the near horizon, w…
Since the Bekenstein's proposal that a black hole has equally spaced area spectrum, the quasinormal modes as the characteristic modes of a black hole have been used in obtaining the horizon area spectrum of the black hole. However, the area spectrum of the Kerr black hole in some previous works was inconsistent with the Bekenstein's proposal. In this paper, we notice that the Kerr black hole has three types of resonance modes which are quasinormal modes (QNM), total transmission modes (TTM), and total reflection modes (TRM). All of these resonances represent highly damped oscillations and only…
We find that the Kerr-(Newman)-AdS$_4$ black hole will be shadowless if its rotation parameter is larger than a critical value and the shadowless-ness may be related to the appearance of the null hypersurface caustics (NHC) both inside the Cauchy horizon and outside the event horizon for the black hole with the rotation parameter beyond the critical value. Our studies also further confirm that whether an ultraspinning black hole is super-entropic or not is unrelated to the existence of the NHC outside the event horizon.
We analyze the constraints of gauge theories on Kerr and Kerr-de Sitter spacetimes, which contain one or more horizons. We find that the constraints are modified on such backgrounds through the presence of additional surface terms at the horizons. As a concrete example, we consider the Maxwell field and find that the Gauss law constraint involves surface corrections at the horizons. These surface contributions correspond to induced surface charges and currents on the horizons, which agree with those found within the membrane paradigm. The modification of the Gauss law constraint also influence…
In this paper we provide the first non-trivial evidence for universality of the entropy formula $4πJ_{0}^{+}J_{0}^{-}$ beyond pure Einstein gravity in 4-dimensions. We consider the Einstein-Maxwell theory in the presence of cosmological constant, then write near horizon metric of the Kerr-Newman (A)dS black hole in the Gaussian null coordinate system. We consider near horizon fall-off conditions for metric and $U(1)$ gauge field. We find asymptotic combined symmetry generator, consists of diffeomorphism and $U(1)$ gauge transformation, so that it preserves fall-off conditions. Consequently, we…
We analyze rigidly rotating Nambu--Goto strings in the Kerr spacetime, particularly focusing on the strings sticking in the horizon. From the regularity on the horizon, we find the condition for sticking in the horizon, which is consistent with the second law of the black hole thermodynamics. Energy extraction through the sticking string from a Kerr black hole occurs. We obtain the maximum value of the luminosity of the energy extraction.
We study the horizon geometry of Kerr black holes (BHs) with scalar synchronised hair, a family of solutions of the Einstein-Klein-Gordon system that continuously connects to vacuum Kerr BHs. We identify the region in parameter space wherein a global isometric embedding in Euclidean 3-space, $\mathbb{E}^3$, is possible for the horizon geometry of the hairy BHs. For the Kerr case, such embedding is possible iff the horizon dimensionless spin $j_H$ (which equals the total dimensionless spin, $j$), the sphericity $\mathfrak{s}$ and the horizon linear velocity $v_H$ are smaller than critical value…
I rederive the Kerr/CFT correspondence without first taking the near-horizon extremal Kerr limit. This method extends easily to nonextremal black holes, for which the temperature and central charge behave poorly at the horizon but the entropy remains finite. A computation yields one-half of the standard Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, with hints that the other half may be related to a conformal field theory at the inner horizon. I then present an alternative approach, based on a stretched Killing horizon, in which the full entropy is obtained and the temperature and central charge remain well-beha…
Assuming that a particle source is at rest in a locally non-rotating frame on the equatorial plane of the Kerr-Sen black hole, we investigate the escape of the massless particle and massive particle from the black hole to spatial infinity. We calculate the escape probabilities of the emitted particles. We find that the angular momentum of the Kerr-Sen black hole boosts the escape probabilities near the horizon of the extreme Kerr-Sen black hole; however the angular momentum of the Kerr-Sen black hole suppresses the escape probabilities near the horizon of the non-extreme Kerr-Sen black hole. W…
We apply the method of Bäcklund transformations to generate a new hierarchy of exact solutions to the vacuum Einstein equations starting from the extreme Kerr near-horizon geometry. Solutions with extreme Kerr near-horizon asymptotics containing an arbitrary number of free parameters are included.
Realistic accretion disk models require a number of ingredients, including viscous fluids, electromagnetic fields and general relativistic corrections. Close to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) the latter can be appreciable and (quasi-)Newtonian approximations become unreliable. This is particularly true for nearly extremal black holes like GRS 1915+105, where the ISCO almost coincides with the black hole horizon. To describe the physics close to the ISCO adequately in a simplified model we approximate the nearly extremal Kerr geometry by the near-horizon extremal Kerr geometry and c…
We determine all infinitesimal transverse deformations of extreme horizons in Einstein-Maxwell theory that preserve axisymmetry. In particular, we show that the general static transverse deformation of the AdS(2) X S(2) near-horizon geometry is a two-parameter family, which contains the known extreme charged, accelerating, static black hole solution held in equilibrium by an external electric or magnetic field (Ernst solution) and a special case of the extreme Kerr-Newman-Melvin solution. More generally, we find a three-parameter family of deformations of the extreme Kerr-Newman horizon, which…
This article explores the characteristics of ergoregion, horizons and circular geodesics around a Kerr-Newman-Kasuya black hole. We investigate the effect of spin and dyonic charge parameters on ergoregion, event horizon and static limit surface of the said black hole. We observed that both electric, as well as magnetic charge parameters, results in decreasing the radii of event horizon and static limit, whereas increasing the area of ergoregion. The obtained results are compared with that acquired from Kerr and Schwarzschild black holes. Moreover, we figured out the photons orbit of circular …
We study the quasi-normal modes of a massless scalar field in a general sub-extreme Kerr back- ground by exploiting the hidden SL(2, R) x SL(2, R) x SO(3) symmetry of the subtracted geometry approximation. This faithfully models the near horizon geometry but locates the black hole in a confining asymptotically conical box analogous to the anti-de-Sitter backgrounds used in string the- ory. There are just two series of modes, given in terms of hypergeometric functions and spherical harmonics, reminiscent of the left-moving and right-moving degrees in string theory: one is over- damped, the othe…
We consider force-free magnetospheres around the extreme Kerr black hole. In this case there is no known exact analytic solution to force free electrodynamics which is stationary, axisymmetric and magnetically-dominated. However, any stationary, axisymmetric and regular force-free magnetosphere in extreme Kerr black hole approaches the same attractor solution in the near-horizon extreme Kerr (NHEK) limit with null electromagnetic field. We show that by moving away from the attractor solution in the NHEK region, one finds magnetically-dominated solutions in the extreme Kerr black hole with fini…
It was recently discovered that Killing horizons in the generic Kerr-NUT-(anti) de Sitter spacetimes are projectively singular, i.e. their spaces of the null generators have singular geometry. Only if the cosmological constant takes the special value determined by the Kerr and NUT parameters, and the radius of the horizon, then the corresponding horizon does not suffer that problem. In the current paper, the projectively non-singular horizons are investigated. They are found to be cosmological and non-extremal. Every projectively non-singular horizon can be used to define a global completion o…
An atom falling freely into a Kerr black hole in a Boulware-like vacuum is shown to emit radiation with a Planck spectrum at the Hawking temperature. For a cloud of falling atoms with random initial times, the radiation is thermal. The existence of this radiation is due to the acceleration of the vacuum field modes with respect to the falling atom. Its properties can be traced to the dominant role of conformal quantum mechanics (CQM) in the neighborhood of the event horizon. We display this effect for a scalar field, though the acceleration radiation has a universal conformal behavior that is …
We investigate the structure of the gravitational field generated by a massless particle moving on the horizon of an arbitrary (stationary) black hole. This is done by employing the generalized Kerr-Schild class where we take the null generators of the horizon as the geodetic null vector-field and a scalar function which is concentrated on the horizon.
We use Heun type solutions given in \cite{Suzuki} for the radial Teukolsky equation, written in the background metric of the Kerr-Newman-de Sitter geometry, to calculate the quasinormal frequencies for polynomial solutions and the reflection coefficient for waves coming from the de Sitter horizon and reflected at the outer horizon of the black hole.
Melvin-Kerr black hole represents a generalization of the Kerr black hole to the case of a non-vanishing external magnetic field via the Harrison transformation. Conformal mechanics related to the near horizon limit of such a black hole configuration is studied and its unique N=2 supersymmetric extension is constructed.
By utilizing the ultraspinning limit we generate a new class of extremal vanishing horizon (EVH) black holes in odd dimensions ($d\geq5$). Starting from the general multi-spinning Kerr-AdS metrics, we show the EVH limit commutes with the ultraspinning limit, in which the resulting solutions possess a non-compact but finite area manifold for all $(t,r\neq r_+)=const.$ slices. We also demonstrate the near horizon geometries of obtained ultraspinning EVH solutions contain an AdS$_3$ throats, where it would be a BTZ black hole in the near EVH cases. The commutativity of the ultraspinning and near …
We formulate conditions on the geometry of a non-expanding horizon $Δ$ which are sufficient for the space-time metric to coincide on $Δ$ with the Kerr metric. We introduce an invariant which can be used as a measure of how different the geometry of a given non-expanding horizon is from the geometry of the Kerr horizon. Directly, our results concern the space-time metric at $\IH$ at the zeroth and the first orders. Combained with the results of Ashtekar, Beetle and Lewandowski, our conditions can be used to compare the space-time geometry at the non-expanding horizon with that of Kerr to every …
Analytical solutions to force-free electrodynamics around black holes are fundamental for building simple models of accretion disk and jet dynamics. We present a (nonexhaustive) classification of complex highest-weight solutions to the force-free equations in the near-horizon region of the extremal Kerr black hole. Several classes of real magnetically dominated or null solutions, either axisymmetric or nonaxisymmetric, are described which admit finite energy and angular momentum with respect to the asymptotically flat observer. Subtleties related to the velocity of light surface in the near-ho…
We describe a finite-difference method for locating apparent horizons and illustrate its capabilities on boosted Kerr and Schwarzschild black holes. Our model spacetime is given by the Kerr-Schild metric. We apply a Lorentz boost to this spacetime metric and then carry out a 3+1 decomposition. The result is a slicing of Kerr/Schwarzschild in which the black hole is propagated and Lorentz contracted. We show that our method can locate distorted apparent horizons efficiently and accurately.
We use the isometric embedding of the spatial horizon of fast rotating Kerr black hole in a hyperbolic space to compute the quasi-local mass of the horizon for any value of the spin parameter $j=J/m^2$. The mass is monotonically decreasing from twice the ADM mass at $j=0$ to $1.76569m$ at $j=\sqrt{3}/2$. It then monotonicaly increases to a maximum around $j=0.99907$, and finally decreases to $2.01966m$ for $j=1$ which corresponds to the extreme Kerr black hole.
In the previous work we give a microscopic explanation of the entropy for the BTZ black hole and four-dimensional Kerr black hole based on the massless scalar field theory on the horizon. An essential input is the central charges of those black holes. In this paper, we calculate the central charges for Kerr black holes and Kerr-AdS black holes in diverse dimensions by rewriting the entropy formula in a suggesting way. Then we also give the statistical explanation for the entropy of those black holes based on the scalar field on the horizon which similar to 4D kerr black hole.
The quantum tunneling radiation of fermions with arbitrary spin at the event horizon of Kerr-de Sitter black hole is accurately modified by using the dispersion relation proposed in the study of string theory and quantum gravitational theory. The derived tunneling rate and temperature at the black hole horizons are analyzed and studied.
We analyze the near horizon symmetry of the extremal Kerr black hole within the framework of Poincaré gauge theory (PG) for two important limiting cases: Riemannian and teleparallel solution. We show that the algebra of canonical generators is realized by Virasoro algebra, with central charge which depends on the black hole horizon radius . The conformal entropy of the black hole is obtained via Cardy formula.
Local condition that imply the no-hair property of black holes are completed. The conditions take the form of constraints on the geometry of the 2-dimensional crossover surface of black hole horizon. They imply also the axial symmetry without the rigidity theorem. This is the new result contained in this letter. The family of the solutions to our constraints is 2-dimensional and can be parametrized by the area and angular momentum. The constraints are induced by our assumption that the horizon is of the Petrov type D. Our result applies to all the bifurcated Killing horizons: inner/outer black…
New coordinates are given which describe non-degenerate Kerr black holes in dual-null foliations based on the outer (or inner) horizons, generalizing the Kruskal form for Schwarzschild black holes. The construction involves an area radius for the transverse surfaces and a generalization of the Regge-Wheeler radial function, both functions of the original radial coordinate only.
The Ashtekar and Ashtekar-Barbero connection variable formulations of Kerr isolated horizons are derived. Using a regular Kinnersley tetrad in horizon-penetrating Kruskal-Szekeres-like coordinates, the spin coefficients of Kerr geometry are determined by solving the first Maurer-Cartan equation of structure. Isolated horizon conditions are imposed on the tetrad and the spin coefficients. A transformation into an orthonormal tetrad frame that is fixed in the time gauge is applied and explicit calculations of the spin connection, the Ashtekar and Ashtekar-Barbero connections, and the correspondi…
We examine several aspects of black hole horizon physics using the Melvin-Kerr-Newman (MKN) family of spacetimes. Roughly speaking these are black holes immersed in a distorting background magnetic field and unlike the standard Kerr-Newman (KN) family they are not asymptotically flat. As exact solutions with horizons that can be highly distorted relative to KN, they provide a good testbed for ideas about and theorems constraining black hole horizons. We explicitly show that MKN horizons with fixed magnetic field parameter may be uniquely specified by their area, charge and angular momentum and…
Force-Free Electrodynamics for black holes in Anti de Sitter is considered. We present new, energy extracting solutions of Force-Free Electrodynamics in Anti de Sitter - Near Horizon Extremal Kerr and Super-Entropic Near Horizon Extremal Kerr geometries. The relevant equations of motion are derived from an action for force-free plasma surrounding spinning black holes with generic asymptotics. We consider the energy flux of electrodynamic fields in rotating frames to argue that the correct measure for energy extraction is the energy flux measured by a rotating observer in the near horizon regio…
We analyze asymptotic symmetries on the Killing horizon of the four-dimensional Kerr--Newman black hole. We first derive the asymptotic Killing vectors on the Killing horizon, which describe the asymptotic symmetries, and find that the general form of these asymptotic Killing vectors is the universal one possessed by arbitrary Killing horizons. We then construct the phase space associated with the asymptotic symmetries. It is shown that the phase space of an extreme black hole either has the size comparable with a non-extreme black hole, or is small enough to exclude degeneracy, depending on w…
We provide an invariant characterization of the physical properties of the Kerr spacetime. We introduce two dimensionless invariants, constructed out of some known curvature invariants, that act as detectors for the event horizon and ergosurface of the Kerr black hole. We also show that the mass and angular momentum can be extracted from local measurements of the curvature invariants, which in the weak field limit could be used to approximate the total angular momentum and mass of a system of merging black holes. Finally, we introduce a dimensionless invariant that gives a local measure of the…
Based on various string theoretic constructions, and various string-inspired generalizations thereof, there have been repeated suggestions that the areas of black hole event horizons might be quantized in a quite specific manner, in terms of linear combinations of square roots of positive integers. It is important to realise that there are significant physical constraints on such integer-based proposals when one (somewhat speculatively) attempts to extend them outside their original extremal and supersymmetric framework. Specifically, in their most natural and direct physical interpretations, …
We study force-free magnetospheres in the Blandford-Znajek process from rapidly rotating black holes by adopting the near-horizon geometry of near-extreme Kerr black holes (near-NHEK). It is shown that the Znajek regularity condition on the horizon can be directly derived from the resulting stream equation. In terms of the condition, we split the full stream equation into two separate equations. Approximate solutions around the rotation axis are derived. They are found to be consistent with previous solutions obtained in the asymptotic region. The solutions indicate energy and angular-momentum…
We first calculate equations of motion for particles in the Kerr-Sen-de Sitter black hole spacetime. Then in the eikonal regime, we analytically obtain the quasi-normal resonant modes of massless neutral scalar field perturbation and find its imaginary part to be characterized by the surface gravity of the near-extremal Kerr-Sen-de Sitter black hole with Cauchy horizon approaching the event horizon. We further show that the Penrose strong cosmic censorship conjecture is thus respected in this spacetime with dilaton scalar field and axion pseudoscalar field.
We present an elementary evaluation of the surface areas of the event horizon and stationary limit surface for an uncharged Kerr black hole. The latter appears not to have been previously given in the literature, and permits us to suggest new geometrical / physical interpretations of these areas.
The theory of isolated horizon provides a quasi-local framework to study the spacetime geometry in the neighbourhood of the horizon of a black hole in equilibrium without any reference to structures far away from the horizon. While the geometric properties of the Kerr-(A)dS and more general algebraically special solutions have drawn substantial interest recently in the isolated horizon formalism, their horizon metrics have never been written down explicitly in the adapted Bondi-like coordinate system. Following the approach by Krishnan and assuming that the horizon symmetry extends to certain …
We show that the study of hidden conformal symmetry that associates to the Kerr/CFT correspondence can also apply to the cosmological horizon in Kerr-Newman-Taub-NUT-de Sitter spacetime. This symmetry allows one to employ some two dimensional conformal field theory methods to understand the properties of the cosmological horizon. The entropy can be understood by using the Cardy formula, and the equation for scattering process in the near region has an agreement with the one obtained from a two point function in two dimensional conformal field theory. We also show that pair production can occur…
