Threshold behavior of the cross sections of ultraperipheral nuclear interactions is studied. Production of $e^+e^-$ and $μ^+μ^-$ pairs as well as $π^0$ and parapositronium is treated. The values of corresponding energy thresholds are presented and the total cross sections of these processes at the newly constructed NICA and FAIR facilities are estimated.
The very strong electromagnetic fields present in ultraperipheral relativistic heavy ion collisions lead to important higher order effects of the electromagnetic interaction. These multiphoton exchange processes are studied using perturbation theory and the sudden or Glauber approximation. In many important cases, the multi-photon amplitudes factorize into independent single-photon amplitudes. These amplitudes have a common impact parameter vector, which induces correlations between the amplitudes. Impact-parameter dependent equivalent-photon spectra for simultaneous excitation are calculated,…
Photoproduction of heavy quarks and exclusive production of vector mesons in ultraperipheral proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions depend significantly on nuclear gluon distributions. In the present study we investigate quantitatively the extent of the applicability of these processes at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in constraining the shadowing component of nuclear gluon modifications.
It is argued that the cross sections of ultraperipheral interactions of heavy nuclei can become comparable in value to those of their ordinary hadronic interactions at high energies. Simple estimates of corresponding "preasymptotic energy thresholds" are provided. The~method of equivalent photons is compared with the perturbative approach. The~situation at NICA/FAIR energies is discussed.
It is advocated that geometry of the interaction region of two heavy nuclei colliding at large impact parameters is important for the relative role of light-by-light scattering and QCD-initiated processes. Exclusive production of resonances is possible by dense electromagnetic fields in the interior space between the nuclei. The cross section of these processes is evaluated and some examples are considered. It is speculated that the exclusive production of $ρ^0$-mesons by two-photon processes forbidden by the Landau-Yang rule may become allowed within strong magnetic fields.
The automated generation of arbitrary exclusive final states produced via photon fusion in ultraperipheral high-energy collisions of protons and/or nuclei is implemented in the MadGraph5_aMC@NLO and HelacOnia Monte Carlo codes. Cross sections are calculated in the equivalent photon approximation using $γ$ fluxes derived from electric dipole and charge form factors, and incorporating hadronic survival probabilities. Multiple examples of $γγ$ cross sections computed with this setup, named gamma-UPC, are presented for proton-proton, proton-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus ultraperipheral collisions (…
We discuss nuclear cross sections for $AA \to AAV$ and $AA \to AAVV$ reactions with one or two vector mesons in the final state. Our analysis is done in the impact parameter space equivalent photon approximation. This approach allows to consider the above processes taking into account distance between colliding nuclei. We consider both ultraperipheral and semi-central collisions. We are a first group which undertook a study of single $J/ψ$ photoproduction for different centrality bins. We show that one can describe new ALICE experimental data by including geometrical effects of collisions in t…
The comparison of photoproduction cross sections for $c\bar{c}$ and b-b(bar) in PbPb and pPb collisions can give sensitivity to nuclear shadowing effects. The photoproduction of vector mesons is even more sensitive to the underlying gluon distributions. In this study we present the cross sections and rapidity dependence of the photoproduction of heavy quarks and exclusive production of vector mesons in ultraperipheral pPb and PbPb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at sqrt(s_NN)=5 TeV and sqrt(s_NN)=2.76$ TeV, respectively. The potentials of using these processes for constraining nuclear …
We discuss $γγ\to ππ$ reactions, starting from the two-pion threshold up to about $\sqrt{s_{γγ}}$ = 6 GeV. We include the dipion continuum due to pion exchange (for $π^+π^-$) and $ρ^\pm$ exchange (for $π^0π^0$) as well as the dipion $σ(600)$, $f_0(980)$ and $f_2(1270)$ s-channel resonances. We discuss also a possible contribution of less pronounced scalar resonances $f_0(1500)$ and $f_0(1710)$ as well as the tensor resonances $f'_2(1525)$, $f_2(1565)$ and $f_2(1950)$. We find that the inclusion of the spin-four $f_4(2050)$ resonant state improves the situation at $\sqrt{s_{γγ}} \approx$ 2 GeV.…
We discuss the physics of large impact parameter interactions at the LHC: ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs). The dominant processes in UPCs are photon-nucleon (nucleus) interactions. The current LHC detector configurations can explore small $x$ hard phenomena with nuclei and nucleons at photon-nucleon center-of-mass energies above 1 TeV, extending the $x$ range of HERA by a factor of ten. In particular, it will be possible to probe diffractive and inclusive parton densities in nuclei using several processes. The interaction of small dipoles with protons and nuclei can be investigated in elasti…
Cross sections are calculated for single and double photon exchange in ultraperipheral Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC. The particle production is simulated with the DPMJET event generator. Large cross sections are found for particle production around mid-rapidity making these processes an important background to hadronic nuclear interactions at both the trigger and analysis levels.
We discuss the photoproduction processes of light vector mesons ($ρ$, $ω$, and $ϕ$) from the nucleon near threshold. We first develop a simple model based on meson exchanges which is modified by the nucleon pole terms. We then extend this model to study other physically interesting topics. As examples, we discuss the missing nucleon resonances problem in $ω$ photoproduction and the direct $ϕNN$ coupling constant in $ϕ$ photoproduction. The calculated cross sections are compared with the recent experimental data. Various spin observables are discussed, which may be measured at current photon/el…
We study the semi-inclusive limit of the deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan (DY) processes in soft collinear effective theory. In this regime so-called threshold logarithms must be resummed to render perturbation theory well behaved. Part of this resummation occurs via the Dokshitzer, Gribov, Lipatov, Altarelli, Parisi (DGLAP) equation, which at threshold contains a large logarithm that calls into question the convergence of the anomalous dimension. We demonstrate here that the problematic logarithm is related to rapidity divergences, and by introducing a rapidity regulator can be tamed. …
We present and discuss the theory and phenomenology of the leading twist theory of nuclear shadowing which is based on the combination of the generalization of the Gribov-Glauber theory, QCD factorization theorems, and the HERA QCD analysis of diffraction in lepton-proton deep inelastic scattering (DIS). We apply this technique for the analysis of a wide range of hard processes with nuclei---inclusive DIS on deuterons, medium-range and heavy nuclei, coherent and incoherent diffractive DIS with nuclei, and hard diffraction in proton-nucleus scattering---and make predictions for the effect of nu…
The amplitude of subthreshold phi-meson production is calculated using dominant tree-level diagrams for three-body collisions. It is shown that the production can overwhelmingly be described by two-step processes. The effect of the genuine three-body contribution (i.e. the contribution which cannot be factorized) is discussed. The production rate of phi-mesons is presented for proton induced reactions on carbon.
The threshold region for processes of hadronic and nuclear interactions is very interesting for a theoretical as well as an experimental point of view. In this region one can apply different physical methods, starting from classical current algebra methods - for processes invloving soft pions, through effective Lagrangian approaches - or perturbative chiral symmetry theory (ChPT). The essential simplification of the spin structure of matrix elements for threshold regime results in better understanding of the underlying mechanisms and allows the analysis of polarization phenomena. A dedicated f…
We give reasons for the existence of the NN decoupled dibaryon resonance $d^*_1$(1956). Strong evidence for its presence has first been found in the energy spectrum of coincident photons emitted at $\pm 90^0$ from the $pp \to γγX$ process at 216 MeV measured by the DIB2$γ$ collaboration at JINR. As further experimental indications of the $d^*_1$(1956) existence we present those found in the available photon energy spectra of $npγ$, $pdγ$, and $pAγ$ reactions below the pion threshold. It is noted that serious discrepancies between the $npγ$ and $pdγ$ experimental cross sections and theoretical …
Neutrino (antineutrino) scattering off $^{12}$C is one of various important key reactions for $ν$-process in the nucleosysnthesis of light nuclei. Most of neutrino-nucleus scattering are considered through indirect processes within the energy range from a few to tens of MeV. Target nuclei are excited by incident neutrino (antineutrino) through various transitions, and subsequently decay into other nuclei with emitting particles. But, direct processes are also feasible, in which incident neutrino (antineutrino) strips directly one nucleon from target nuclei. Consequently, direct processes may a…
Electron scattering from the three-nucleon bound state with two- and three-body disintegration is described. The description uses the purely nucleonic charge-dependent CD-Bonn potential and its coupled-channel extension CD-Bonn + $Δ$. Exact solutions of three-particle equations are employed for the initial and final states of the reactions. The current has one-baryon and two-baryon contributions and couples nucleonic with $Δ$-isobar channels. $Δ$-isobar effects on the observables are isolated. The $Δ$-isobar excitation yields an effective three-nucleon force and effective two- and three-nucleo…
Radiative nucleon-deuteron capture and two- and three-body photo disintegration of the three-nucleon bound state are described. The description uses the purely nucleonic charge-dependent CD-Bonn potential and its coupled-channel extension CD Bonn + $Δ$. The $Δ$-isobar excitation yields an effective three-nucleon force and effective two- and three-nucleon currents besides other $Δ$-isobar effects; they are mutually consistent. Exact solutions of three-particle equations are employed for the initial and final states of the reactions. The current has one-baryon and two-baryon contributions and co…
