This paper introduces our solution for the Track2 in AI City Challenge 2020 (AICITY20). The Track2 is a vehicle re-identification (ReID) task with both the real-world data and synthetic data. Our solution is based on a strong baseline with bag of tricks (BoT-BS) proposed in person ReID. At first, we propose a multi-domain learning method to joint the real-world and synthetic data to train the model. Then, we propose the Identity Mining method to automatically generate pseudo labels for a part of the testing data, which is better than the k-means clustering. The tracklet-level re-ranking strategy with weighted features is also used to post-process the results. Finally, with multiple-model ensemble, our method achieves 0.7322 in the mAP score which yields third place in the competition. The codes are available at https://github.com/heshuting555/AICITY2020_DMT_VehicleReID.

In this paper, we propose Hard Person Identity Mining (HPIM) that attempts to refine the hard example mining to improve the exploration efficacy in person re-identification. It is motivated by following observation: the more attributes some people share, the more difficult to separate their identities. Based on this observation, we develop HPIM via a transferred attribute describer, a deep multi-attribute classifier trained from the source noisy person attribute datasets. We encode each image into the attribute probabilistic description in the target person re-ID dataset. Afterwards in the att…
This paper is a technical report to our submission to the ICCV 2021 VIPriors Re-identification Challenge. In order to make full use of the visual inductive priors of the data, we treat the query and gallery images of the same identity as continuous frames in a video sequence. And we propose one novel post-processing strategy for video temporal relationship mining, which not only calculates the distance matrix between query and gallery images, but also the matrix between gallery images. The initial query image is used to retrieve the most similar image from the gallery, then the retrieved image…

Annotating a large-scale image dataset is very tedious, yet necessary for training person re-identification models. To alleviate such a problem, we present an active hard sample mining framework via training an effective re-ID model with the least labeling efforts. Considering that hard samples can provide informative patterns, we first formulate an uncertainty estimation to actively select hard samples to iteratively train a re-ID model from scratch. Then, intra-diversity estimation is designed to reduce the redundant hard samples by maximizing their diversity. Moreover, we propose a computer…
The existing person search methods use the annotated labels of person identities to train deep networks in a supervised manner that requires a huge amount of time and effort for human labeling. In this paper, we first introduce a novel framework of person search that is able to train the network in the absence of the person identity labels, and propose efficient unsupervised clustering methods to substitute the supervision process using annotated person identity labels. Specifically, we propose a hard negative mining scheme based on the uniqueness property that only a single person has the sam…

Vehicle Re-Identification (V-ReID) is a critical task that associates the same vehicle across images from different camera viewpoints. Many works explore attribute clues to enhance V-ReID; however, there is usually a lack of effective interaction between the attribute-related modules and final V-ReID objective. In this work, we propose a new method to efficiently explore discriminative information from vehicle attributes (for instance, color and type). We introduce AttributeNet (ANet) that jointly extracts identity-relevant features and attribute features. We enable the interaction by distilli…
Vehicle re-identification (Re-ID) has become a popular research topic owing to its practicability in intelligent transportation systems. Vehicle Re-ID suffers the numerous challenges caused by drastic variation in illumination, occlusions, background, resolutions, viewing angles, and so on. To address it, this paper formulates a multi-order deep cross-distance learning (\textbf{DCDLearn}) model for vehicle re-identification, where an efficient one-view CycleGAN model is developed to alleviate exhaustive and enumerative cross-camera matching problem in previous works and smooth the domain discr…
Vehicle re-identification (reID) plays an important role in the automatic analysis of the increasing urban surveillance videos, which has become a hot topic in recent years. However, it poses the critical but challenging problem that is caused by various viewpoints of vehicles, diversified illuminations and complicated environments. Till now, most existing vehicle reID approaches focus on learning metrics or ensemble to derive better representation, which are only take identity labels of vehicle into consideration. However, the attributes of vehicle that contain detailed descriptions are benef…

Vehicle re-identification (re-ID) matches images of the same vehicle across different cameras. It is fundamentally challenging because the dramatically different appearance caused by different viewpoints would make the framework fail to match two vehicles of the same identity. Most existing works solved the problem by extracting viewpoint-aware feature via spatial attention mechanism, which, yet, usually suffers from noisy generated attention map or otherwise requires expensive keypoint labels to improve the quality. In this work, we propose Viewpoint-aware Channel-wise Attention Mechanism (VC…
In this paper we tackle the problem of vehicle re-identification in a camera network utilizing triplet embeddings. Re-identification is the problem of matching appearances of objects across different cameras. With the proliferation of surveillance cameras enabling smart and safer cities, there is an ever-increasing need to re-identify vehicles across cameras. Typical challenges arising in smart city scenarios include variations of viewpoints, illumination and self occlusions. Most successful approaches for re-identification involve (deep) learning an embedding space such that the vehicles of s…
The widespread popularization of vehicles has facilitated all people's life during the last decades. However, the emergence of a large number of vehicles poses the critical but challenging problem of vehicle re-identification (reID). Till now, for most vehicle reID algorithms, both the training and testing processes are conducted on the same annotated datasets under supervision. However, even a well-trained model will still cause fateful performance drop due to the severe domain bias between the trained dataset and the real-world scenes. To address this problem, this paper proposes a domain ad…
The crucial problem in vehicle re-identification is to find the same vehicle identity when reviewing this object from cross-view cameras, which sets a higher demand for learning viewpoint-invariant representations. In this paper, we propose to solve this problem from two aspects: constructing robust feature representations and proposing camera-sensitive evaluations. We first propose a novel Heterogeneous Relational Complement Network (HRCN) by incorporating region-specific features and cross-level features as complements for the original high-level output. Considering the distributional differ…

Face de-identification algorithms have been developed in response to the prevalent use of public video recordings and surveillance cameras. Here, we evaluated the success of identity masking in the context of monitoring drivers as they actively operate a motor vehicle. We studied the effectiveness of eight de-identification algorithms using human perceivers and a state-of-the-art deep convolutional neural network (CNN). We used a standard face recognition experiment in which human subjects studied high-resolution (studio-style) images to learn driver identities. Subjects were tested subsequent…

The key challenge of unsupervised vehicle re-identification (Re-ID) is learning discriminative features from unlabelled vehicle images. Numerous methods using domain adaptation have achieved outstanding performance, but those methods still need a labelled dataset as a source domain. This paper addresses an unsupervised vehicle Re-ID method, which no need any types of a labelled dataset, through a Self-supervised Metric Learning (SSML) based on a feature dictionary. Our method initially extracts features from vehicle images and stores them in a dictionary. Thereafter, based on the dictionary, t…

License plate detection is the first and essential step of the license plate recognition system and is still challenging in real applications, such as on-road scenarios. In particular, small-sized and oblique license plates, mainly caused by the distant and mobile camera, are difficult to detect. In this work, we propose a novel and applicable method for degraded license plate detection via vehicle-plate relation mining, which localizes the license plate in a coarse-to-fine scheme. First, we propose to estimate the local region around the license plate by using the relationships between the ve…

Recent successes of deep learning-based recognition rely on maintaining the content related to the main-task label. However, how to explicitly dispel the noisy signals for better generalization in a controllable manner remains an open issue. For instance, various factors such as identity-specific attributes, pose, illumination and expression affect the appearance of face images. Disentangling the identity-specific factors is potentially beneficial for facial expression recognition (FER). This chapter systematically summarize the detrimental factors as task-relevant/irrelevant semantic variatio…
Intra-camera supervision (ICS) for person re-identification (Re-ID) assumes that identity labels are independently annotated within each camera view and no inter-camera identity association is labeled. It is a new setting proposed recently to reduce the burden of annotation while expect to maintain desirable Re-ID performance. However, the lack of inter-camera labels makes the ICS Re-ID problem much more challenging than the fully supervised counterpart. By investigating the characteristics of ICS, this paper proposes camera-specific non-parametric classifiers, together with a hybrid mining qu…

Cameras mounted on Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) are increasingly used for recreational photography. However, aerial photographs of public places often contain faces of bystanders thus leading to a perceived or actual violation of privacy. To address this issue, we propose to pseudo-randomly modify the appearance of face regions in the images using a privacy filter that prevents a human or a face recogniser from inferring the identities of people. The filter, which is applied only when the resolution is high enough for a face to be recognisable, adaptively distorts the face appearance as a func…

Recently, vehicle re-identification methods based on deep learning constitute remarkable achievement. However, this achievement requires large-scale and well-annotated datasets. In constructing the dataset, assigning globally available identities (Ids) to vehicles captured from a great number of cameras is labour-intensive, because it needs to consider their subtle appearance differences or viewpoint variations. In this paper, we propose camera-tracklet-aware contrastive learning (CTACL) using the multi-camera tracklet information without vehicle identity labels. The proposed CTACL divides an …

Vehicle re-identification (Re-ID) is urgently demanded to alleviate thepressure caused by the increasingly onerous task of urban traffic management. Multiple challenges hamper the applications of vision-based vehicle Re-ID methods: (1) The appearances of different vehicles of the same brand/model are often similar; However, (2) the appearances of the same vehicle differ significantly from different viewpoints. Previous methods mainly use manually annotated multi-attribute datasets to assist the network in getting detailed cues and in inferencing multi-view to improve the vehicle Re-ID performa…
In traffic engineering, vehicle detectors are trained on limited datasets resulting in poor accuracy when deployed in real world applications. Annotating large-scale high quality datasets is challenging. Typically, these datasets have limited diversity; they do not reflect the real-world operating environment. There is a need for a large-scale, cloud based positive and negative mining (PNM) process and a large-scale learning and evaluation system for the application of traffic event detection. The proposed positive and negative mining process addresses the quality of crowd sourced ground truth…

Vehicle re-identification (reID) is to identify a target vehicle in different cameras with non-overlapping views. When deploy the well-trained model to a new dataset directly, there is a severe performance drop because of differences among datasets named domain bias. To address this problem, this paper proposes an domain adaptation framework which contains an image-to-image translation network named vehicle transfer generative adversarial network (VTGAN) and an attention-based feature learning network (ATTNet). VTGAN could make images from the source domain (well-labeled) have the style of tar…

Identifying user's identity is a key problem in many data mining applications, such as product recommendation, customized content delivery and criminal identification. Given a set of accounts from the same or different social network platforms, user identification attempts to identify all accounts belonging to the same person. A commonly used solution is to build the relationship among different accounts by exploring their collective patterns, e.g., user profile, writing style, similar comments. However, this kind of method doesn't work well in many practical scenarios, since the information p…

Continued improvements in deep learning architectures have steadily advanced the overall performance of 3D object detectors to levels on par with humans for certain tasks and datasets, where the overall performance is mostly driven by common examples. However, even the best performing models suffer from the most naive mistakes when it comes to rare examples that do not appear frequently in the training data, such as vehicles with irregular geometries. Most studies in the long-tail literature focus on class-imbalanced classification problems with known imbalanced label counts per class, but the…
