We monitored the z=0.158 quasar 3C273 between 2015 and 2019 in the optical (BVrz) and near-infrared (JHK) with the aim to perform dust reverberation mapping. Accounting for host galaxy and accretion disk contributions, we obtained pure dust light curves in JHK. Cross correlations between the V-band and the dust light curves yield an average rest-frame delay for the hot dust of tau_cent ~ 410 days. This is a factor 2 shorter than expected from the the dust ring radius R_x ~ 900 light days reported from interferometric studies. The dust covering factor (CF) is about 8%, much smaller than predicted from the half covering angle of 45 degree found for active galactic nuclei (AGN). We analyse the asymmetric shape of the correlation functions and explore whether an inclined bi-conical bowl-shaped dust torus geometry could bring these findings (tau_cent, R_x and CF) into a consistent picture. The hot varying dust emission originates from the edge of the bowl rim with a small covering angle 40 < theta < 45 degree, and we see only the near side of the bi-conus. Such a dust gloriole with R_x = 900 +/- 200 ld and an inclination i = 12 degree matches the data remarkably well. Comparing the results of 3C273 with literature for less luminous AGN, we find a lag-luminosity relation tau propto L^alpha with alpha between 0.33 and 0.40, flatter than the widely adopted relation with alpha = 0.5. We address several explanations for the new lag - luminosity relation.
The size and structure of the dusty circumnuclear torus in active galactic nuclei (AGN) can be investigated by analyzing the temporal response of the torus's infrared (IR) dust emission to variations in the AGN ultraviolet/optical luminosity. This method, reverberation mapping, is applicable over a wide redshift range, but the IR response is sensitive to several poorly constrained variables relating to the dust distribution and its illumination, complicating the interpretation of measured reverberation lags. We have used an enhanced version of our torus reverberation mapping code (TORMAC) to c…
The obscuring circumnuclear torus of dusty molecular gas is one of the major components of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The torus can be studied by analyzing the time response of its infrared (IR) dust emission to variations in the AGN continuum luminosity, a technique known as reverberation mapping. The IR response is the convolution of the AGN ultraviolet/optical light curve with a transfer function that contains information about the size, geometry, and structure of the torus. Here, we describe a new computer model that simulates the reverberation response of a clumpy torus. Given an input…
We present the results of a dust reverberation survey for 17 nearby Seyfert 1 galaxies, which provides the largest homogeneous data collection for the radius of the innermost dust torus. A delayed response of the K-band light curve after the V-band light curve was found for all targets, and 49 measurements of lag times between the flux variation of the dust emission in the K band and that of the optical continuum emission in the V band were obtained. The lag times strongly correlated with the optical luminosity in the luminosity range of M_V=-16 to -22 mag, and the regression analysis was perf…
Reverberation mapping (RM) is an efficient method to investigate the physical sizes of the broad line region (BLR) and dusty torus in an active galactic nucleus (AGN). The Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer (SPHEREx) mission will provide multi-epoch spectroscopic data at optical and near-infrared wavelengths. These data can be used for RM experiments for bright AGNs. We present results of a feasibility test using SPHEREx data in the SPHEREx deep regions for the torus RM measurements. We investigate the physical properties of bright AGNs …
We probe the dusty environment of the archetypical type-1 AGN in NGC 4151 with comprehensive IR reverberation mapping over several decades, in J ($\sim1.22μ$m), H ($\sim1.63μ$m), K ($\sim2.19μ$m), L ($\sim3.45μ$m) and N-band ($\sim10.6μm$), plus multiple measurements at 20--40 $μ$m. At 1--4$μ$m, the hot dust reverberation signals come from two distinct dust populations at separate radii ($\sim$0.033 pc and $\sim$0.076 pc), with temperatures of $\sim$1500--2500 K and $\sim$900--1000 K, consistent with the expected properties of sublimating graphite and silicate dust grains. The domination of th…
The central engines of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) are powered by accreting supermassive black holes, and while AGNs are known to play an important role in galaxy evolution, the key physical processes occur on scales that are too small to be resolved spatially (aside from a few exceptional cases). Reverberation mapping is a powerful technique that overcomes this limitation by using echoes of light to determine the geometry and kinematics of the central regions. Variable ionizing radiation from close to the black hole drives correlated variability in surrounding gas/dust, but with a time dela…
We present composite broad-line region (BLR) reverberation-mapping lag measurements for \halpha, \hbeta, \HeII\,$\lambda4686$ and \MgII\ for a sample of 144, $z\lesssim 1$ quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping (SDSS-RM) project. Using only the 32-epoch spectroscopic light curves in the first 6-month season of SDSS-RM observations, we compile correlation-function measurements for individual objects and then coadd them to allow the measurement of the average lags for our sample at mean redshifts of $0.4$ (for \halpha) and $\sim 0.65$ (for the other lines). At similar qu…
We present reverberation mapping results for the MgII 2800 A broad emission line in a sample of 193 quasars at 0.35<z<1.7 with photometric and spectroscopic monitoring observations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping project during 2014 - 2017. We find significant time lags between the MgII and continuum lightcurves for 57 quasars and define a "gold sample" of 24 quasars with the most reliable lag measurements. We estimate false-positive rates for each lag that range from 1-24%, with an average false-positive rate of 11% for the full sample and 8% for the gold sample. There…
We have recently initiated the first spectroscopic dust reverberation programme on active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the near-infrared. Spectroscopy enables measurement of dust properties, such as flux, temperature and covering factor, with higher precision than photometry. In particular, it enables measurement of both luminosity-based dust radii and dust response times. Here we report results from a one-year campaign on NGC 5548. The hot dust responds to changes in the irradiating flux with a lag time of ~70 light-days, similar to what was previously found in photometric reverberation campaigns…
High cadence, high quality observations of active galactic nuclei (AGN) clearly show continuum variations with lags, relative to the shortest observed variable UV continuum, that increase with wavelength ("lag spectra"). These have been attributed to the irradiation and heating of the central accretion disk by the central X-ray emitting corona. An alternative explanation, connecting the observed lag-spectra to line and continuum emission from gas in the broad line region (BLR), has also been proposed. In this paper I show the clear spectral signature of the time-dependent diffuse gas emission …
We investigate the effects of extended multi-year light curves (9-year photometry and 5-year spectroscopy) on the detection of time lags between the continuum variability and broad-line response of quasars at z>~1.5, and compare with the results using 4-year photometry+spectroscopy presented in a companion paper. We demonstrate the benefits of the extended light curves in three cases: (1) lags that are too long to be detected by the shorter-duration data but can be detected with the extended data; (2) lags that are recovered by the extended light curves but missed in the shorter-duration data …
We broadly explore the effects of systematic errors on reverberation mapping lag uncertainty estimates from {\tt JAVELIN} and the interpolated cross-correlation function (ICCF) method. We focus on simulated lightcurves from random realizations of the lightcurves of five intensively monitored AGNs. Both methods generally work well even in the presence of systematic errors, although {\tt JAVELIN} generally provides better error estimates. Poorly estimated lightcurve uncertainties have less effect on the ICCF method because, unlike {\tt JAVELIN}, it does not explicitly assume Gaussian statistics.…
We present reverberation-mapping lags and black-hole mass measurements using the CIV 1549 broad emission line from a sample of 349 quasars monitored as a part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping Project. Our data span four years of spectroscopic and photometric monitoring for a total baseline of 1300 days. We report significant time delays between the continuum and the CIV 1549 emission line in 52 quasars, with an estimated false-positive detection rate of 10%. Our analysis of marginal lag measurements indicates that there are on the order of 100 additional lags that should b…
Using robotic telescopes of the Universitatssternwarte Bochum near Cerro Armazones in Chile, we monitored the z=0.0377 Seyfert 1 galaxy WPVS48 (2MASX J09594263-3112581) in the optical (B and R) and near-infrared (NIR, J and Ks) with a cadence of two days. The light curves show unprecedented variability details. The NIR variation features of WPVS48 are consistent with the corresponding optical variations, but the features appear sharper in the NIR than in the optical, suggesting that the optical photons undergo multiple scatterings. The J and Ks emission, tracing the hot (1600 K) dust echo, lag…
We investigate the performance of different methodologies that measure the time lag between broad-line and continuum variations in reverberation mapping data using simulated light curves that probe a range of cadence, time baseline, and signal-to-noise ratio in the flux measurements. We compare three widely-adopted lag measuring methods: the Interpolated Cross-Correlation Function (ICCF), the z-transformed Discrete Correlation Function (ZDCF) and the MCMC code JAVELIN, for mock data with qualities typical of multi-object spectroscopic reverberation mapping (MOS-RM) surveys that simultaneously …
The nearby dwarf spiral galaxy NGC 4395 contains a broad-lined active galactic nucleus (AGN) of exceptionally low luminosity powered by accretion onto a central black hole of very low mass ($\sim10^4-10^5$ M$_\odot$). In order to constrain the size of the optical continuum emission region through reverberation mapping, we carried out high-cadence photometric monitoring of NGC 4395 in the $griz$ filter bands on two consecutive nights in 2022 April using the four-channel MuSCAT3 camera on the Faulkes Telescope North at Haleakalā Observatory. Correlated variability across the $griz$ bands is clea…
We present results from a fifteen-month campaign of high-cadence (~ 3 days) mid-infrared Spitzer and optical (B and V ) monitoring of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 6418, with the objective of determining the characteristic size of the dusty torus in this active galactic nucleus (AGN). We find that the 3.6 $μ$m and 4.5 $μ$m flux variations lag behind those of the optical continuum by $37.2^{+2.4}_{-2.2}$ days and $47.1^{+3.1}_{-3.1}$ days, respectively. We report a cross-correlation time lag between the 4.5 $μ$m and 3.6 $μ$m flux of $13.9^{+0.5}_{-0.1}$ days. The lags indicate that the dust emitting…
We present accretion-disk structure measurements from continuum lags in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping (SDSS-RM) project. Lags are measured using the \texttt{JAVELIN} software from the first-year SDSS-RM $g$ and $i$ photometry, resulting in well-defined lags for 95 quasars, 33 of which have lag SNR $>$ 2$σ$. We also estimate lags using the \texttt{ICCF} software and find consistent results, though with larger uncertainties. Accretion-disk structure is fit using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach, parameterizing the measured continuum lags as a function of disk size normali…
Reverberation mapping measurements have been used to constrain the relationship between the size of the broad-line region and luminosity of active galactic nuclei (AGN). This $R-L$ relation is used to estimate single-epoch virial black hole masses, and has been proposed for use to standardise AGN to determine cosmological distances. We present reverberation measurements made with H$β$ from the six-year Australian Dark Energy Survey (OzDES) Reverberation Mapping Program. We successfully recover reverberation lags for eight AGN at $0.12<z< 0.71$, probing higher redshifts than the bulk of H$β$ me…
Accurate methods for reverberation mapping using photometry are highly sought after since they are inherently less resource intensive than spectroscopic techniques. However, the effectiveness of photometric reverberation mapping for estimating black hole masses is sparsely investigated at redshifts higher than $z\approx0.04$. Furthermore, photometric methods frequently assume a Damped Random Walk (DRW) model, which may not be universally applicable. We perform photometric reverberation mapping using the Javelin photometric DRW model for the QSO SDSSJ144645.44+625304.0 at z=0.351 and estimate t…
X-ray reverberation is a powerful technique which maps out the structure of the inner regions of accretion disks around black holes using the echoes of the coronal emission reflected by the disk. While the theory of X-ray reverberation has been developed almost exclusively for standard thin disks, recently reverberation lags have been observed from likely super-Eddington accretion sources such as the jetted tidal disruption event Swift J1644+57. In this paper, we extend X-ray reverberation studies into the super-Eddington accretion regime, focusing on investigating the lags in the Fe Kα line r…
We propose a method for the flux calibration of reverberation mapping spectra based on accurate measurement of [O III] $λ5007$ emission by spectral fitting. The method can achieve better accuracy than the traditional method of van Groningen & Wanders (1992), allowing reverberation mapping measurements for object with variability amplitudes as low as $\sim$ 5%. As a demonstration, we reanalyze the data of the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG--6-30-15 taken from the 2008 campaign of the Lick AGN Monitoring Project, which previously failed to obtain a time lag for this weakly variable object owing to a relat…

We present the accretion disk size estimates for a sample of 19 active galactic nuclei (AGN) using the optical $g$, $r$, and $i$ band light curves obtained from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) survey. All the AGN have reliable supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass estimates based on previous reverberation mapping measurements. The multi-band light curves are cross-correlated, and the reverberation lag is estimated using the Interpolated Cross-Correlation Function (ICCF) method and the Bayesian method using the {\sc javelin} code. As expected from the disk reprocessing arguments, the $g-r$ ba…
Reverberation mapping is a robust method to measure the masses of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) outside of the local Universe. Measurements of the radius -- luminosity ($R-L$) relation using the Mg II emission line are critical for determining these masses near the peak of quasar activity at $z \approx 1 - 2$, and for calibrating secondary mass estimators based on Mg II that can be applied to large samples with only single-epoch spectroscopy. We present the first nine Mg II lags from our five-year Australian Dark Energy Survey (OzDES) reverberation mapping program, which substantially impro…
Multiwavelength variability studies of active galactic nuclei (AGN) can be used to probe their inner regions which are not directly resolvable. Dust reverberation mapping (DRM) estimates the size of the dust emitting region by measuring the delays between the infrared (IR) response to variability in the optical light curves. We measure DRM lags of Zw229-015 between optical ground-based and Kepler light curves and concurrent IR Spitzer 3.6 and 4.5 $μ$m light curves from 2010-2015, finding an overall mean rest-frame lag of 18.3 $\pm$ 4.5 days. Each combination of optical and IR light curve retur…
In recent years, continuum reverberation mapping involving high cadence UV/optical monitoring campaigns of nearby Active Galactic Nuclei has been used to infer the size of their accretion disks. One of the main results from these campaigns has been that in many cases the accretion disks appear too large, by a factor of 2 - 3, compared to standard models. Part of this may be due to diffuse continuum emission from the broad line region (BLR), which is indicated by excess lags around the Balmer jump. Standard cross correlation lag analysis techniques are usually used to just recover the peak or c…

We present the variability and time lag measurements of PG 0934+013 based on a photometric and spectroscopic monitoring campaign over a two year period. We obtained 46 epochs of data from the spectroscopic campaign, which was carried out using the Southern African Large Telescope with $\sim$1 week cadence over two sets of 4 month-long observing period, while we obtained 80 epochs of \textit{B}-band imaging data using a few 1-m class telescopes. Due to the seven month gap between the two observing periods, we separately measured the time lags of broad emission lines including H$β$, by comparing…
The dust reverberation mapping is one of powerful methods to investigate the structure of the dusty tori in AGNs, and it has been performed on more than a hundred type 1 AGNs. However, no clear results have been reported on type 2 AGNs because their strong optical-UV extinction completely hides their accretion disc emission. Here we focus on an X-ray-bright type 2 AGN, NGC 2110, and utilize 2-20 keV X-ray variation monitored by MAXI to trace disc emission, instead of optical-UV variation. Comparing it with light curves in the WISE infrared (IR) W1 band ($λ= 3.4$ $μ$m) and W2 band ($λ= 4.6$ $μ$…
We present Reverberation Mapping results after monitoring a sample of 17 high-z, high-luminosity quasars for more than 10 years using photometric and spectroscopic capabilities. Continuum and line emission flux variability is observed in all quasars. Using cross-correlation analysis we successfully determine lags between the variations in the continuum and broad emission lines for several sources. Here we present a highlight of our results and the determined radius--luminosity relations for Ly_alpha and CIV.
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping Project: Investigation of Continuum Lag Dependence on Broad-Line Contamination and Quasar Properties
The Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4593 was monitored spectroscopically with the Hubble Space Telescope as part of a reverberation mapping campaign that also included Swift, Kepler and ground-based photometric monitoring. During 2016 July 12 - August 6, we obtained 26 spectra across a nearly continuous wavelength range of ~1150 - 10,000A. These were combined with Swift data to produce a UV/optical "lag spectrum", which shows the interband lag relative to the Swift UVW2 band as a function of wavelength. The broad shape of the lag spectrum appears to follow the $τ\propto λ^{4/3}$ relation seen previously …
Supermassive Black Holes with High Accretion Rates in Active Galactic Nuclei. XIV. Long-Duration High-Cadence Reverberation Mapping Results for 11 PG Quasars
Contemporary reverberation mapping campaigns are employing wide-area photometric data and high-multiplex spectroscopy to efficiently monitor hundreds of active galactic nuclei (AGN). However, the interaction of the window function(s) imposed by the observation cadence with the reverberation lag and AGN variability time scales (intrinsic to each source over a range of luminosities) impact our ability to recover these fundamental physical properties. Time dilation effects due to the sample source redshift distribution introduces added complexity. We present comprehensive analysis of the implicat…

Reverberation mapping (RM) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) has been used over the past three decades to determine AGN broad-line region (BLR) sizes and central black-hole masses, and their relations with the AGN's luminosity. Until recently the sample of objects with RM data was limited to low-luminosity AGNs ($L_{\rm opt} \lesssim 10^{46}$ ergs s$^{-1}$) and low redshifts ($z \lesssim 0.5$). Here we present results from a reverberation-mapping project of some of the most luminous and highest redshift quasars that have been mapped to date. The study is based on almost twenty years of photomet…
We present Reverberation Mapping (RM) results for 17 high-redshift, high-luminosity quasars with good quality R-band and emission line light curves. We are able to measure statistically significant lags for Ly_alpha (11 objects), SiIV (5 objects), CIV (11 objects), and CIII] (2 objects). Using our results and previous lag determinations taken from the literature, we present an updated CIV radius--luminosity relation and provide for the first time radius--luminosity relations for Ly_alpha, SiIV and CIII]. While in all cases the slope of the correlations are statistically significant, the zero p…

We perform a systematic survey of active galactic nucleus (AGN) continuum lags using $\sim$3 day cadence $gri$-band light curves from the Zwicky Transient Facility. We select a sample of 94 type 1 AGN at $z<0.8$ with significant and consistent inter-band lags based on the interpolated cross-correlation function method and the Bayesian method JAVELIN. Within the framework of the lamp-post reprocessing model, our findings are: 1) The continuum emission (CE) sizes inferred from the data are larger than the disk sizes predicted by the standard thin disk model; 2) For a subset of the sample, the CE…
Despite many decades of study, the kinematics of the broad-line region of 3C~273 are still poorly understood. We report a new, high signal-to-noise, reverberation mapping campaign carried out from November 2008 to March 2018 that allows the determination of time lags between emission lines and the variable continuum with high precision. The time lag of variations in H$β$ relative to those of the 5100 Angstrom continuum is $146.8_{-12.1}^{+8.3}$ days in the rest frame, which agrees very well with the Paschen-$α$ region measured by the GRAVITY at The Very Large Telescope Interferometer. The time…
A class of methods for measuring time delays between astronomical time series is introduced in the context of quasar reverberation mapping, which is based on measures of randomness or complexity of the data. Several distinct statistical estimators are considered that do not rely on polynomial interpolations of the light curves nor on their stochastic modeling, and do not require binning in correlation space. Methods based on von Neumann's mean-square successive-difference estimator are found to be superior to those using other estimators. An optimized von Neumann scheme is formulated, which be…
Two years' worth of u-, g-, r-, i-, and z-band optical light curves were obtained for the massive type 1 quasar PG 2308+098 at z=0.433 using the 1.05-m Kiso Schmidt telescope/Kiso Wide Field Camera, and inter-band time lags of the light curves were measured. Wavelength-dependent continuum reverberation lag signals of several tens of days relative to the u-band were detected at g-, r-, i-, and z-bands, where the longer wavelength bands showed larger lags. From the wavelength-dependent lags, and assuming the standard disk temperature radial profile $T \propto R_{\rm disk}^{-3/4}$ and an X-ray/fa…
By applying different statistically robust methods, we analyze the time-lag between the continuum and ionized line-emission (Mg II line) light curves for the distant bright quasar CTS C$30.10$ (redshift $z \sim 0.9$). The data were obtained by the 10-meter SALT telescope in South Africa. In detail, we demonstrate the application of several methods using interpolated cross-correlation function (ICCF), discrete correlation function (DCF), z-transformed discrete correlation function (zDCF), von Neumann estimator, and the JAVELIN code package. In particular, we discuss the uncertainties of these m…

We present the results of a dust-reverberation survey of quasars at redshifts z<0.6. We found a delayed response of the K-band flux variation after the optical flux variation in 25 out of 31 targets, and obtained the lag time between them for 22 targets. Combined with the results for nearby Seyfert galaxies, we provide the largest homogeneous collection of K-band dust-reverberation data for 36 type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). This doubles the sample and includes the most distant AGN and the largest lag so far measured. We estimated the optical luminosity of the AGN component of each targe…
At the Universitaetssternwarte Bochum near Cerro Armazones we have monitored the Seyfert-1 galaxy 3C 120 between September 2014 and March 2015 in BVRI and a narrow band filter covering the redshifted H alpha line; in addition we obtained a single con-temporary spectrum with FAST at Mt. Hopkins. Compared to earlier epochs 3C 120 is about a factor of three brighter, allowing us to study the shape of the broad line region (BLR) and the dust torus in a high luminosity phase. The analysis of the light curves yields that the dust echo is rather sharp and symmetric in contrast to the more complex bro…
Several active galactic nuclei show correlated variations in the ultraviolet/optical range, with time delays increasing at longer wavelengths. Thermal reprocessing of the X-rays illuminating the accretion disk has been proposed as a viable explanation. In this scenario, the variable X-ray flux irradiating the accretion disk is partially reflected in X-rays, and partially absorbed, thermalized and re-emitted with some delay by the accretion disk at longer wavelengths. We investigate this scenario assuming an X-ray point-like source illuminating a standard Novikov-Thorne accretion disk, around a…
We investigate the correlation between infrared (JHKL) and optical (B) fluxes of the variable nucleus of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 using partially published data for the last 6 years (2008-2013.). Here we are using the same data as in Oknyansky et al. (2014), but include also optical (B) data from Guo et al. We find that the lag of flux in all the infrared bands is the same, 40 +- 6 days, to within the measurement accuracy. Variability in the J and K bands is not quite simultaneous, perhaps due to the differing contributions of the accretion disk in these bands. The lag found for the K band …
