Collective optical excitations in dipole-coupled nanorings of sub-wavelength spaced quantum emitters exhibit extreme sub-radiance and field confinement facilitating an efficient and low-loss ring-to-ring energy transfer. We show that energy shifts, radiative lifetimes, and emission patterns of excitons and biexcitons in such rings can be tailored via the orientation of the individual dipoles. Tilting the polarization from perpendicular to tangential to the ring dramatically changes the lifetime of the symmetric exciton state from superradiance to subradiance with the radiated field acquiring orbital angular momentum. At a magic tilt angle all excitons are degenerate and the transport fidelity between two rings exhibits a minimum. Further simulations suggest that, for certain parameters, the decay decreases double-exponentially with the emitter's density. Disorder in the rings' structure can even enhance radiative lifetimes. The transport efficiency strongly depends on polarization and size, which we demonstrate by simulating a bio-inspired example of two rings with 9 and 16 dipoles as found in biological light harvesting complexes (LHC). The field distribution in the most superradiant state in a full LHC multi-ring structure shows tight sub-wavelength field confinement in the central ring, while long-lived subradiant states store energy in the outer rings.
We study the application of one nanoring driven by a laser field in different states of polarization in logic circuits. In particular we show that assigning boolean values to different state of the incident laser field and to the emitted signals, we can create logic gates such as OR, XOR and AND. We also show the possibility to make logic circuits such as half-adder and full-adder using one and two nanoring respectively. Using two nanorings we made the Toffoli gate. Finally we use the final angular momentum acquired by the electron to store information and hence show the possibility to use an …
Electronic excitations in metallic nanoparticles in the optical regime that have been of great importance in surface enhanced spectroscopy and emerging applications of molecular plasmonics, due to control and confinement of electromagnetic energy, may also be of potential to control the motion of nanoparticles and molecules. Here, we propose a concept for trapping polarizable particles and molecules using toroidal metallic nanoparticles. Specifically, gold nanorings are investigated for their scattering properties and field distribution to computationally show that the response of these optica…
Irradiating intercalated nanorings by optical vortices ignites a charge flow that emits coherent trains of high harmonic bursts with frequencies and time structures that are controllable by the topological charge of the driving vortex beam. Similar to synchrotron radiation, the polarization of emitted harmonics is also selectable by tuning to the appropriate emission angle with respect to the ring plane. The nonequilibrium orbital magnetic moment triggered in a ring tunnels quantum mechanically to smaller and larger rings leading respectively to high and low-frequency harmonic generation. The …
Self-assembled supramolecular aggregates are excellent candidates for the design of efficient excitation transport devices. Both artificially prepared and natural photosynthetic aggregates in plants and bacteria present an important degree of disorder that is supposed to hinder excitation transport. Besides, molecular excitations couple to nuclear motion affecting excitation transport in a variety of ways. We present an exhaustive study of exciton dynamics in disordered nanorings with long-range interactions under the influence of a phonon bath and take the LH2 system of purple bacteria as a m…
A ring of sub-wavelength spaced dipole-coupled quantum emitters features extraordinary optical properties when compared to a one-dimensional chain or a random collection of emitters. One finds the emergence of extremely subradiant collective eigenmodes similar to an optical resonator, which feature strong 3D sub-wavelength field confinement. Motivated by structures commonly appearing in natural light harvesting complexes, we extend these studies to stacked concentric multi-ring geometries. We predict that double rings allow to engineer significantly darker and better confined collective excita…
The effect of the dipole polarization on the quantum dipole dipole interaction near an Ag nanosphere (ANS) is investigated. A theoretical formalism in terms of classical Green function is developed for the transfer rate and the potential energy of the dipole dipole interaction (DDI) between two polarized dipoles. It is found that a linear transition dipole can couple to a left circularly polarized transition dipole much stronger than to a right circularly polarized transition dipole. This polarization selectivity exists over a wide frequency range and is robust against the variation of the dip…
Lee-Goldburg cross polarization is used in many NMR experiments to determine internuclear distances. Distances calculated from frequency peaks in the dipolar coupled dimension are subject to scale factors. Experimentally determined scale factors can differ significantly from the theoreticalyy useful value described in the literature. In this work, simulations using SPINEVOLUTION explore effects of varying experimental parameters of frequency offset and cross polarization powers on $^{15}$N-H systems. Experimental data is used to corroborate the simulation. The scale factor is shown not only to…
We propose the construction of a set of quantum hydrodynamics equations for the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) where atoms have electric dipole moment (EDM). The contribution of the dipole-dipole interactions (DDI) to the Euler equation is estimated. Quantum equations for the evolution of medium polarization are constructed for the first time. The mathematical method we developed allows studying the effects of interactions on the evolution of polarization. The developed method may be applied to various physical systems in which dynamics is affected by DDI. A problem of elementary excitations i…
Stimulated wave of polarization, triggered by a flip of a single spin, presents a simple model of quantum amplification. Previously, it has been found that such wave can be excited in a 1D Ising chain with nearest-neighbor interactions, irradiated by a weak resonant transverse field. Here we explore models with more realistic Hamiltonians, in particular, with natural dipole-dipole interactions. Results of simulations for 1D spin chains and rings with up to nine spins are presented.
We experimentally investigate $σ^+$-$σ^-$ polarization gradient cooling~(PGC) of a single $^{87}$Rb atom in a tightly focused dipole trap and show that the cooling limit strongly depends on the polarization of the trapping field. For optimized cooling light power, the temperature of the atom reaches~$10.4(6)\,μ$K in a linearly polarized trap, approximately five times lower than in a circularly polarized trap. The inhibition of PGC is qualitatively explained by the fictitious magnetic fields induced by the trapping field. We further demonstrate that switching the trap polarization from linear t…
In this report, the polarization properties of the photoluminescence emitted by single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond are investigated using resonant excitation at cryogenic temperature. We first underline that the two excited-state orbital branches are associated with two orthogonal transition dipoles. Using selective excitation of one dipole, we then show that the photoluminescence is partially unpolarized owing to fast relaxation between the two orbitals induced by the thermal bath. This result might be important in the context of the realization of indistinguishable single …
Optical trapping of selected species of radioactive atoms has great potential in precision measurements for testing fundamental physics such as EDM, PNC and parity violating beta-decay asymmetry correlation coefficients. We report trapping of 10^4 radioactive ^{82}Rb atoms (t_{1/2}=75 s) with a trap lifetime of ~55 seconds in an optical dipole trap. Transfer efficiency from the magneto-optical trap was ~14%. We further report the evidence of spontaneous spin polarization of the atoms in optical dipole trap loading. This advancement is an important step towards a new generation of precision J-b…
We propose a two-dimensional model for a multilayer stack of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates formed by a strong optical lattice. We derive effective intra- and interlayer dipole-dipole interaction potentials and provide simple analytical approximations for a given number of lattice sites at arbitrary polarization. We find that the interlayer dipole-dipole interaction changes the transverse aspect ratio of the ground state in the central layers depending on its polarization and the number of lattice sites. The changing aspect ratio should be observable in time of flight images. Furthermore, w…

Point-defects in wide bandgap semiconductors are promising candidates for future applications that necessitate quantum light sources. Recently, defect-based single photon sources have been observed in ZnO that are very bright and remain photoactive from 4.5 K to room temperature. Despite several investigations, the structure and electronic states of these emitters remain unknown. In this work, we establish a procedure to distinguish a Z dipole from an XY dipole when studying quantum emitters that are randomly oriented. Our cryogenic and room temperature polarization measurements collectively e…
Tightly focused optical dipole traps induce vector light shifts ("fictitious magnetic fields") which complicate their use for single-atom trapping and manipulation. The problem can be mitigated by adding a larger, real magnetic field, but this solution is not always applicable; in particular, it precludes fast switching to a field-free configuration. Here we show that this issue can be addressed elegantly by deliberately adding a small elliptical polarization component to the dipole beam. In our experiments with single $^{87}$Rb atoms in a chopped trap, we observe improvements up to a factor 1…
In this work, we construct a polarization-mediated magic-intensity (MI) optical dipole trap (ODT) array, in which the detrimental effects of light shifts on the mixed-species qubits are efficiently mitigated so that the coherence times of the mixed-species qubits are both substantially enhanced and balanced for the first time. This mixed-species magic trapping technique relies on the tunability of the coefficient of the third-order cross term and ground state hyperpolarizability, which are inherently dependent on the degree of circular polarization of the trap laser. Experimentally, polarizati…
We demonstrate dynamical nuclear spin polarization in the absence of an external magnetic field, by resonant circularly polarized optical excitation of a single electron or hole charged quantum dot. Optical pumping of the electron spin induces an effective inhomogeneous magnetic (Knight) field that determines the direction along which nuclear spins could polarize and enables nuclear-spin cooling by suppressing depolarization induced by nuclear dipole-dipole interactions. Our observations suggest a new mechanism for spin-polarization where spin exchange with an electron reservoir plays a crucia…
We characterize the anisotropic differential ac-Stark shift for the Dy $626$ nm intercombination transition, induced in a far-detuned $1070$ nm optical dipole trap, and observe the existence of a "magic polarization" for which the polarizabilities of the ground and excited states are equal. From our measurements we extract both the scalar and tensorial components of the dynamic dipole polarizability for the excited state, $α_E^\text{s} = 188 (12)\,α_\text{0}$ and $α_E^\text{t} = 34 (12)\,α_\text{0}$, respectively, where $α_\text{0}$ is the atomic unit for the electric polarizability. We also p…
We experimentally observe the dipole scattering of a nanoparticle using a high numerical aperture (NA) imaging system. The optically levitated nanoparticle provides an environment free of particle-substrate interaction. We illuminate the silica nanoparticle in vacuum with a 532 nm laser beam orthogonally to the propagation direction of the 1064 nm trapping laser beam strongly focused by the same high NA objective used to collect the scattering, which results in a dark background and high signal-noise ratio. The dipole orientations of the nanoparticle induced by the linear polarization of the i…
We present an experimental study of the collective dipole oscillation of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a harmonic trap. Dynamics of the center-of-mass dipole oscillation is studied in a broad parameter region, as a function of spin-orbit coupling parameters as well as oscillation amplitude. Anharmonic properties beyond effective-mass approximation are revealed, such as amplitude-dependent frequency and finite oscillation frequency at place with divergent effective mass. These anharmonic behaviors agree quantitatively with variational wave-function calculations. Moreover, we …
