The duality between the type IIB superstring theory in an $AdS_5 \times S^5$ background with $N$ units of five-form flux and ${\cal N} =4$ super Yang--Mills theory with a $U(N)$ gauge group has been studied extensively. My version of the construction of the superstring world-sheet action is reviewed here. This paper is dedicated to Michael Duff on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

We consider the open superstring action in the AdS$_4 \times \mathbf{CP}^3$ background and investigate the suitable boundary conditions for the open superstring describing the 1/2-BPS D-branes by imposing the $κ$-symmetry of the action. This results in the classification of 1/2-BPS D-branes from covariant open superstring. It is shown that the 1/2-BPS D-brane configurations are restricted considerably by the Kähler structure on $\mathbf{CP}^3$. We just consider D-branes without worldvolume fluxes.

In this paper, we construct physical vertex operators corresponding to on-shell fluctuations around the AdS_5 x S^5 background. The structure of these AdS_5 x S^5 vertex operators closely resembles the structure of the massless vertex operators in a flat background.
In this work we propose a systematic way to compute the logarithmic divergences of composite operators in the pure spinor description of the $AdS_5\times S^5$ superstring. The computations of these divergences can be summarized in terms of a dilatation operator acting on the local operators. We check our results with some important composite operators of the formalism.

The classical spectral curve for the worldsheet theory of the AdS_5 x S^5 lambda superstring is constructed. The lambda string is interpreted as a regularized, non-abelian T dual of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring with respect to full PSU(2,2|4) symmetry. The form of the curve is identified as the semi-classical limit of a set of Bethe ansatz equations for an XXZ type spin chain for the supergroup PSU(2,2|4) in contrast to the string in AdS_5 x S^5 which is XXX type.

The super 0-brane and GS superstring actions on AdS$_2 \times S^2$ background with 2-form flux are constructed by supercoset approach. We find the super 0-brane action contains two parameters which are interpreted as the electric and magnetic charges of the super 0-brane. The obtained super 0-brane action describes the BPS saturated dyonic superparticle moving on AdS$_2 \times S^2$ background. The WZ action contains the required coupling with 2-form flux. We discuss the relation between the recently derived bound state S-matrices for the AdS5 x S5 superstring and Yangian symmetry. We will study the relation between this Yangian symmetry and the Bethe ansatz. In particular we can use it to derive the Bethe equations for bound states.

As a test of the consistency of the approach, we use the background field method to verify the absence of central charge at the second order in the expansion and to show the one-loop finiteness of the effective action.
