VV 655, a dwarf irregular galaxy with HI tidal debris, is a companion to the lenticular luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) NGC 4418. NGC 4418 stands out among nearby LIRGs due to its dense central concentration of molecular gas and the dusty, bi-polar structures along its minor axis suggestive of a wind driven by a central starburst and possible nuclear activity. We seek to understand the consequences of the ongoing minor interaction between VV 655 and NGC 4418 for the evolution of the LIRG, including the origin of the gas supply responsible for its unusual nuclear properties. We investigate the structural, kinematic, and chemical properties of VV 655 and NGC 4418 by analyzing archival imaging data and optical spectroscopic observations from the SDSS-III and new spectra from SALT-RSS. We characterize their gas-phase metal abundances and spatially resolved, ionized gas kinematics, and demonstrate that the gas-phase metallicity in NGC 4418 significantly exceeds that in VV 655. No kinematic disturbances in the ionized gas are observed along the minor axis of NGC 4418, but we see evidence for ionized gas outflows from VV 655 that may increase the cross-section for gas stripping in grazing collisions. A faint, asymmetric outer arm is detected in NGC 4418 of the type normally associated with galaxy-galaxy interactions. The simplest model suggests that the minor interaction between VV 655 and NGC 4418 produced the unusual nuclear properties of the LIRG via tidal torquing of the interstellar medium of NGC 4418 rather than through a significant gas transfer event. In addition to inducing a central concentration of gas in NGC 4418, this interaction also produced an enhanced star formation rate and an outer tidal arm in the LIRG. The VV 655-NGC 4418 system offers an example of the potential for minor collisions to alter the evolutionary pathways of giant galaxies.
Mergers of galaxies are an important mode for galaxy evolution because they serve as an efficient trigger of powerful starbursts. However, observational studies of the molecular gas properties during their early stages are scarce. We present interferometric CO(2-1) maps of two luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), NGC 3110 and NGC 232, obtained with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) with ~ 1 kpc resolution. While NGC 3110 is a spiral galaxy interacting with a minor (14:1 stellar mass) companion, NGC 232 is interacting with a similarly sized object. We find that such interactions have likely induced …
We report on a detailed study of the stellar populations and ionized gas properties in the merger LIRG NGC 2623, analysing optical Integral Field Spectroscopy from the CALIFA survey and PMAS LArr, multiwavelength HST imaging, and OSIRIS narrow band H$α$ and [NII]$λ$6584 imaging. The spectra were processed with the STARLIGHT full spectral fitting code, and the results compared with those for two early-stage merger LIRGs (IC 1623 W and NGC 6090), together with CALIFA Sbc/Sc galaxies. We find that NGC 2623 went through two periods of increased star formation (SF), a first and widespread episode, …
The role of major mergers in galaxy evolution is investigated through a detailed characterization of the stellar populations, ionized gas properties, and star formation rates (SFR) in the early-stage merger LIRGs IC 1623 W and NGC 6090, by analysing optical Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) and high resolution HST imaging. The spectra were processed with the Starlight full spectral fitting code, and the emission lines measured in the residual spectra. The results are compared with control non-interacting spiral galaxies from the CALIFA survey. Merger-induced star formation is extended and rece…
We present ALMA and ACA [CI]$^{3}P_{1}-^{3}P_{0}$ ([CI](1-0)) observations of NGC6240, which we combine with ALMA CO(2-1) and IRAM PdBI CO(1-0) data to study the physical properties of the massive molecular (H$_2$) outflow. We discover that the receding and approaching sides of the H$_2$ outflow, aligned east-west, exceed 10 kpc in their total extent. High resolution ($0.24"$) [CI](1-0) line images surprisingly reveal that the outflow emission peaks between the two AGNs, rather than on either of the two, and that it dominates the velocity field in this nuclear region. We combine the [CI](1-0) …
Aims. We present new IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer observations of Arp 220 in HCN, HCO$^{+}$, HN$^{13}$C J=1-0, C$_{2}$H N=1-0, SiO J = 2-1, HNCO J$_{k,k'}$ = 5$_{0,4}$ - 4$_{0,4}$, CH$_{3}$CN(6-5), CS J=2-1 and 5-4 and $^{13}$CO J=1-0 and 2-1 and of NGC 6240 in HCN, HCO$^{+}$ J = 1-0 and C$_{2}$H N = 1-0. In addition, we present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillmeter Array science verification observations of Arp 220 in CS J = 4-3 and CH$_{3}$CN(10-9). Various lines are used to analyse the physical conditions of the molecular gas including the [$^{12}$CO]/[$^{13}$CO] and [$^{12}$CO]/[C$^…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of multiple CO(1-0), $^{13}$CO(1-0), and C$^{18}$O(1-0) lines and 2.9 mm and 1.3 mm continuum emission toward the nearby interacting luminous infrared galaxy NGC 3110, supplemented with similar spatial resolution H$α$, 1.4GHz continuum, and $K$-band data. We estimate the typical CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor of 1.7 $M_{\odot}$ (K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^2$)$^{-1}$ within the disk using LTE-based and dust-based H$_2$ column densities, and measure the 1-kpc scale surface densities of star formation rate ($Σ_{\rm SFR}$), super star clus…
In this work we use seeing-limited SINFONI H- and K-band spectroscopy to analyse the spatially resolved kinematics of the stellar component in the inner r<1-2 kpc of ten nearby (mean z=0.014) LIRGs. We compare the stellar kinematics with those for different gas phases, and analyse the relative effects of using different tracers when estimating dynamical masses. The stellar velocity and velocity dispersion maps are extracted in both near-IR bands by fitting the continuum emission using pPXF while we use the gas kinematics from previous works. We find that the different gas phases have similar k…
We present new high-resolution ALMA (13CO J=1-0 and J= 2-1) and CARMA (12CO and 13CO J=1-0) observations of two Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs): Arp 55 and NGC 2623. The new data are complementary to published and archival Submillimeter Array observations of 12CO J=2-1 and J=3-2. We perform a Bayesian likelihood non-local thermodynamic equilibrium analysis to constrain the molecular gas physical conditions such as temperature, column and volume densities and the [12CO]/[13CO] abundance ratio. For Arp 55, an early/intermediate staged merger, the line measurements are consistent with cold (~1…
Archival WFC3/UVIS imaging of Arp 299 (NGC 3690E + NGC 3690W) is retrieved to investigate the young massive cluster (YMC) population of this ongoing merger. We extract 2182 cluster candidates, including 1323 high confidence photometric sources. Multiband photometry is matched with Yggdrasil models to estimate the age, mass, and extinction of each cluster. A Schechter fit of the truncated cluster mass function results in a characteristic mass ${\rm M_{*} = 1.6 \times 10^6 M_{\odot}}$. Our results confirm that intensely star-forming galaxies such as Arp 299 host more massive clusters than quiesc…
The aim of this study is to constrain the dynamics, structure and feeding of the compact nucleous of NGC4418, and to reveal the nature of the main hidden power source: starburst or AGN. We obtained high spatial resolution observations of NGC4418 at 1.4 and 5 GHz with MERLIN, and at 230 and 270 GHz with the SMA very extended configuration. We use the continuum morphology and flux density to estimate the size of the emitting region, the star formation rate and the dust temperature. Emission lines are used to study the kinematics through position-velocity diagrams. Molecular emission is studied w…
We report the detection of a heavily obscured Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) in the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) NGC 6286, identified in a 17.5 ks NuSTAR observation. The source is in an early merging stage, and was targeted as part of our ongoing NuSTAR campaign observing local luminous and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies in different merger stages. NGC 6286 is clearly detected above 10 keV and, by including the quasi-simultaneous Swift/XRT and archival XMM-Newton and Chandra data, we find that the source is heavily obscured [$N_{\rm\,H}\simeq (0.95-1.32)\times 10^{24}\rm\,cm^{-2}$], with …
The nearby, luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) NGC 7469 hosts a Seyfert nucleus with a circumnuclear star-forming ring and is thus the ideal local laboratory for investigating the starburst--AGN connection in detail. We present integral-field observations of the central 1.3 kpc region in NGC 7469 obtained with the JWST Mid-InfraRed Instrument. Molecular and ionized gas distributions and kinematics at a resolution of {\sim}100 pc over the 4.9 - 7.6μm region are examined to study gas dynamics influenced by the central AGN. The low-ionization [Fe II] λ5.34μm and [Ar II] λ6.99μm lines are bright on t…
We present an integral field spectroscopic study of two nearby Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) that exhibit evidence of widespread shock excitation induced by ongoing merger activity, IC 1623 and NGC 3256. We show the importance of carefully separating excitation due to shocks vs. excitation by HII regions and the usefulness of IFU data in interpreting the complex processes in LIRGs. Our analysis focuses primarily on the emission line gas which is extensive in both systems and is a result of the abundant ongoing star formation as well as widespread LINER-like excitation from shocks. We use …
We present an integral field spectroscopic study of radiative shocks in 27 nearby ultraluminous and luminous infrared galaxies (U/LIRGs) from the Great Observatory All-sky LIRG Survey, a subset of the Revised Bright Galaxy Sample. Our analysis of the resolved spectroscopic data from the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) focuses on determining the detailed properties of the emission line gas, including a careful treatment of multi- component emission line profiles. The resulting information obtained from the spectral fits are used to map the kinematics of the gas, sources of ionizing radiation an…
We present an integral field spectroscopic study of the Luminous Infrared Galaxy (LIRG) NGC 7130, a known starburst-AGN composite galaxy. We employ standard emission line ratio diagnostics and maps of velocity dispersion and velocity field to investigate how the dominant ionising sources change as a function of radius. From the signatures of both star formation and AGN activity we show that NGC 7130 is a remarkably clean case of starburst-AGN mixing. We find a smooth transition from AGN dominated emission in the centre to pure star forming activity further out, from which we can estimate the r…
We present ALMA Cycle-0 observations of the CO (6-5) line emission and of the 435um dust continuum emission in the central kpc of NGC 1614, a local luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) at a distance of 67.8 Mpc (1 arcsec = 329 pc). The CO emission is well resolved by the ALMA beam (0".26 x 0".20) into a circum-nuclear ring, with an integrated flux of f_{CO(6-5)} = 898 (+-153) Jy km/s, which is 63(+-12)% of the total CO(6-5) flux measured by Herschel. The molecular ring, located between 100pc < r < 350pc from the nucleus, looks clumpy and includes seven unresolved (or marginally resolved) knots with…
The merger remnant NGC 34 is a local luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) hosting a nuclear starburst and a hard X-ray source associated with a putative, obscured Seyfert~2 nucleus. In this work, we use adaptive optics assisted near infrared (NIR) integral field unit observations of this galaxy to map the distribution and kinematics of the ionized and molecular gas in its inner $\mathrm{1.2\,kpc \times 1.2\,kpc}$, with a spatial resolution of 70~pc. The molecular and ionized gas kinematics is consistent with a disc with projected major axis along a mean PA~=~$\mathrm{-9^{\circ}.2 \pm 0^{\circ}.9}$.…
We used the SPIRE/FTS instrument aboard the Herschel Space Observatory (HSO) to obtain the Spectral Line Energy Distributions (SLEDs) of CO from J=4-3 to J=13-12 of Arp 193 and NGC 6240, two classical merger/starbursts selected from our molecular line survey of local Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs: L_{IR}>=10^{11} L_{sol}). The high-J CO SLEDs are then combined with ground-based low-J CO, {13}CO, HCN, HCO+, CS line data and used to probe the thermal and dynamical states of their large molecular gas reservoirs. We find the two CO SLEDs strongly diverging from J=4-3 onwards, with NGC6240 havi…
The classification of galaxy mergers and isolated disks is key for understanding the relative importance of galaxy interactions and secular evolution during the assembly of galaxies. The kinematic properties of galaxies as traced by emission lines have been used to suggest the existence of a significant population of high-z star-forming galaxies consistent with isolated rotating disks. However, recent studies have cautioned that post-coalescence mergers may also display disk-like kinematics. To further investigate the robustness of merger/disk classifications based on kinematic properties, we …
In this work, we investigate the molecular gas and star formation properties in the barred spiral galaxy NGC 6946 using multiple molecular lines and star formation tracers. High-resolution image (100 pc) of $^{13}$CO (1-0) is created by single dish NRO45 and interferometer CARMA for the inner 2 kpc disk, which includes the central region (nuclear ring and bar) and the offset ridges of the primary bar. Single dish HCN (1-0) observations were also made to constrain the amount of dense gas. Physical properties of molecular gas are inferred by (1) the Large Velocity Gradient (LVG) calculations usi…
We present results of a photometric study into the cluster population of NGC 1566, a nearby grand design spiral galaxy, sampled out to a Galactocentric radius of $\approx 5.5$ kpc. The shape of the mass-limited age distribution shows negligible variation with radial distance from the centre of the galaxy, and demonstrates three separate sections, with a steep beginning, flat middle and steep end. The luminosity function can be approximated by a power law at lower luminosities with evidence of a truncation at higher luminosity. The power law section of the luminosity function of the galaxy is b…
Both observations and cosmological simulations have recently shown that there is a large scatter in the number of satellites of Milky Way (MW)-like galaxies. In this study, we investigate the relation between the satellite number and galaxy group assembly history, using the $r-$band magnitude gap ($Δm_{12}$) between the first and the second brightest galaxy as an indicator. From 20 deg$^2$ of Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program Wide layer, we identify 17 dwarf satellite candidates around NGC 4437, a spiral galaxy with about one-fourth of the MW stellar mass. We estimate their distances …
We present the discovery and follow-up observations of two CCSNe that occurred in the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG), NGC3256. The first, SN2018ec, was discovered using the ESO HAWK-I/GRAAL adaptive optics seeing enhancer, and was classified as a Type Ic with a host galaxy extinction of $A_V=2.1^{+0.3}_{-0.1}$ mag. The second, AT2018cux, was discovered during the course of follow-up observations of SN2018ec, and is consistent with a sub-luminous Type IIP classification with an $A_V=2.1 \pm 0.4$ mag of host extinction. A third CCSN, PSNJ10275082-4354034 in NGC3256, has previously been reported…
We announce a new facility in the spectral code CLOUDY that enables tracking the evolution of a cooling parcel of gas with time. For gas cooling from temperatures relevant to galaxy clusters, earlier calculations estimated the [Fe XIV] λ5303 / [Fe X] λ6375 luminosity ratio, a critical diagnostic of a cooling plasma, to slightly less than unity. By contrast, our calculations predict a ratio ~3. We revisit recent optical coronal line observations along the X-ray cool arc around NGC 4696 by Canning et al. (2011), which detected [Fe X] λ6375, but not [Fe XIV] λ5303. We show that these observations…
Observed chemical (anti)correlations in proton-capture elements among globular cluster stars are presently recognized as the signature of self-enrichment from now extinct, previous generations of stars. This defines the multiple population scenario. Since fluorine is also affected by proton captures, determining its abundance in globular clusters provides new and complementary clues regarding the nature of these previous generations, and supplies strong observational constraints to the chemical enrichment timescales. In this paper we present our results on near-infrared CRIRES spectroscopic ob…
We present ALMA Cycle-0 observations of the CO (6-5) line emission (rest-frame frequency = 691.473 GHz) and of the 435$μm$ dust continuum emission in the nuclear region of NGC 34, a local luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) at a distance of 84 Mpc (1" = 407 pc) which contains a Seyfert 2 active galactic nucleus (AGN) and a nuclear starburst. The CO emission is well resolved by the ALMA beam ($\rm 0."26\times 0."23$), with an integrated flux of $\rm f_{CO~(6-5)} = 1004\; (\pm 151) \; Jy\; km\; s^{-1}$. Both the morphology and kinematics of the CO (6-5) emission are rather regular, consistent with a…
The 180-day Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping campaign on NGC 5548 discovered an anomalous period, the broad-line region (BLR) holiday, in which the emission lines decorrelated from the continuum variations. This is important since the correlation between the continuum-flux variations and the emission-line response is the basic assumption for black hole (BH) mass determinations through reverberation mapping. During the BLR holiday, the high-ionization intrinsic absorption lines also decorrelated from the continuum as a result of variable covering factor of the line of sight (LO…
The galaxy NGC 4418 contains one of the most compact obscured nuclei within a luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) in the nearby Universe. This nucleus contains a rich molecular gas environment and an unusually high ratio of infrared to radio luminosity (q-factor). The compact nucleus is powered by either a compact starburst or an active galactic nucleus (AGN). The aim of this study is to constrain the nature of the nuclear region (starburst or AGN) within NGC 4418 via very-high-resolution radio imaging. Archival data from radio observations using the EVN and MERLIN interferometers are imaged. Size…
NGC 2146, a nearby luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG), presents evidence for outflows along the disk minor axis in all gas phases (ionized, neutral atomic and molecular). We present an analysis of the multi-phase starburst driven superwind in the central 5 kpc as traced in spatially resolved spectral line observations, using far-IR Herschel PACS spectroscopy, to probe the effects on the atomic and ionized gas, and optical integral field spectroscopy to examine the ionized gas through diagnostic line ratios. We observe an increased ~250 km/s velocity dispersion in the [OI] 63 micron, [OIII] 88 mic…

We present a method to derive the dynamical mass of face-on galaxy disks using their neutral hydrogen (HI) velocity dispersion. We have applied the method to nearby, gas rich galaxies that have extended HI gas disks and have low inclinations. The galaxy sample includes 4 large disk galaxies; NGC628, NGC6496, NGC3184, NGC4214 and 3 dwarf galaxies DDO46, DDO63 and DDO187. We have used archival data from the THINGS and LITTLE THINGS surveys to derive the HI gas distributions and SPITZER mid-infrared images to determine the stellar disk mass distributions. We examine the disk dynamical and baryoni…
Observations that span a broad range of wavelengths are used to examine asymmetries in the disk of the nearby late-type spiral galaxy NGC 247. The northern spiral arm is over-luminous at all wavelengths when compared with other parts of the galaxy at similar galactocentric radii, while the density of very luminous red stars in the void that is immediately south of this arm matches that in other parts of the disk at the same galactocentric radius. Two bubbles with spatial extents of many kpc are identified in the disk, and many of the young stars in the southern disk of NGC 247 are located in t…
Extended main-sequence turnoffs apparent in most young and intermediate-age clusters (younger than ~2 Gyr) are known features caused by fast rotating early-type (earlier than F-type) stars. Late-type stars are not fast rotators because their initial angular momenta have been quickly dispersed due to magnetic braking. However, the mass limit below which stars have been magnetically braked has not been well constrained by observation. In this paper, we present an analysis of the eMSTO of NGC 6819, an open cluster of an intermediate-age (~2.5 Gyr), believed to be comparable to the lifetime of sta…
NGC 4258 is a critical galaxy for establishing the extragalactic distance scale and estimating the Hubble constant (Ho). Water masers in the nucleus of the galaxy orbit about its supermassive black hole, and very long baseline interferometric observations of their positions, velocities, and accelerations can be modeled to give a geometric estimate of the angular-diameter distance to the galaxy. We have improved the technique to obtain model parameter values, reducing both statistical and systematic uncertainties compared to previous analyses. We find the distance to NGC 4258 to be 7.576 +/- 0.…
The recently claimed discovery of an ultra-diffuse galaxy lacking dark matter has important implications for alternate theories to dark matter as well as models of galaxy formation within the $Λ$CDM context. In this letter, we present a deep Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) search for atomic hydrogen in this ultra-diffuse galaxy, NGC1052-DF2. We report a non-detection of the HI21cm transition from the galaxy and place a stringent upper-limit on the HI mass of the galaxy - $M_{HI} < 3.15 \times 10^6 \ ({ΔV}/20 \ \textrm{km/s})^{1/2} \ M_\odot \ (3σ)$. This makes NGC1052-DF2 an extremely g…
High-dispersion spectra in the Li 6708 Angstrom region have been obtained and analyzed in the old, metal-deficient cluster, NGC 2243. From Hydra spectra for 29 astrometric and radial-velocity members, we derive rotational velocities, as well as [Fe/H], [Ca/H], [Si/H], and [Ni/H] based on 17, 1, 1, and 3 lines, respectively. Using ROBOSPECT, an automatic equivalent width measurement program, we derive [Fe/H] = -0.54 +/- 0.11 (MAD), for an internal precision for the cluster [Fe/H] below 0.03 dex. Given the more restricted line set, comparable values for [Ca/H], [Si/H], and [Ni/H] are -0.48 +/- 0…
We present deep HI observations of the moderately inclined spiral galaxy, NGC 2997. The goal of these observations was to search for HI clouds in the vicinity of NGC 2997 analogous to the high velocity clouds of the Milky Way and gain insight into their origins. We find evidence for the presence of a galactic fountain as well as the accretion of intragalactic material, however we do not identify any large clouds of HI far from the disk of the galaxy. NGC 2997 has a thick, lagging HI disk that is modeled with a vertical velocity gradient of 18-31 km/s/kpc. Anomalous velocity HI clouds with mass…
We report the identification of extended tidal debris potentially associated with the globular cluster NGC 3201, using the RAVE catalogue. We find the debris stars are located at a distance range of 1-7 kpc based on the forthcoming RAVE distance estimates. The derived space velocities and integrals of motion show interesting connections to NGC 3201, modulo uncertainties in the proper motions. Three stars, which are among the 4 most likely candidates for NGC 3201 tidal debris, are separated by 80 degrees on the sky yet are well matched by the 12 Gyr, [Fe/H] = -1.5 isochrone appropriate for the …
Gyrochronology allows the derivation of ages for cool main sequence stars based on their observed rotation periods and masses, or a suitable proxy thereof. It is increasingly well-explored for FGK stars, but requires further measurements for older ages and K-M-type stars. We study the nearby, 3 Gyr-old open cluster Ruprecht 147 to compare it with the previously-studied, but far more distant, NGC 6819 cluster, and especially to measure cooler stars than was previously possible there. We constructed an inclusive list of 102 cluster members from prior work, including Gaia DR2, and for which light…
Charge exchange emission is known to provide a key diagnostic to the interface between hot and cold matter in many astrophysical environments. Most of the recent charge exchange studies focus on its emission in the X-ray band, but few on the UV part, although the latter can also provide a powerful probe of the charge exchange process. An atomic calculation, as well as an application to observed data, are presented to explore and describe the potential use of the UV data for the study of cosmic charge exchange. Using the newest charge exchange model in the SPEX code v3.03, we re-analyze an arch…

We present X-ray (Chandra), radio (EVLA and EVN), and archival optical data of the triple-merging system in NGC3341. Our panchromatic analysis confirms the presence of a Seyfert 2 AGN in NGC3341B, one of the secondary dwarf companions. On the other hand, the nucleus of the primary galaxy, consistent with a star-forming region of a few solar masses per year, and NGC3341C are very unlikely to host an AGN. We therefore suggest that NGC3341 is an exceptional example of an AGN triggered in the satellite galaxy of a minor-merging system. The existence of such a system can have important implications…
We present optical emission-line spectra for outlying HII regions in the extended neutral gas disk surrounding the blue compact dwarf galaxy NGC 2915. Using a combination of strong-line R23 and direct oxygen abundance measurements, we report a flat, possibly increasing, metallicity gradient out to 1.2 times the Holmberg radius. We find the outer-disk of NGC 2915 to be enriched to a metallicity of 0.4 Z_solar. An analysis of the metal yields shows that the outer disk of NGC 2915 is overabundant for its gas fraction, while the central star-foming core is similarly under-abundant for its gas frac…
